Yearly Archives: 2019

Let's not lie to ourselves here, every single one of us will bawl our eyes out during the last season of HBO's iconic fantasy show, Game of Thrones.

How could we not? Any character who has survived up until now gets a medal, to be fair, and our favourites could die at any second.

The visual effects, the romance, the betrayals, the wars, THE DRAMA. *swoons* Kit Harington, Jon Snow himself, recently spoke to GQ Australia, where he revealed how difficult the final season was to film.

It made Harington cry more than once, but according to the protagonist and infamous member of the Night's Watch, the show "seemed to be designed to break us." Same here, Kit, same here.

"Everyone was broken at the end. I don't know if we were crying because we were sad it was ending or if we were crying because it was so f–king tiring," he divulged to GQ Australia.

"We were sleep deprived. It was like it was designed to make you think, ‘Right, I'm f–king sick of this'," he added. We'd crave our beds too.

"I remember everyone walking around towards the end going, ‘I've had enough now. I love this, it's been the best thing in my life, I'll miss it one day—but I'm done.'"

Co-creator of the show David Benioff explained that the lengthy delay between seasons is because of how monstrous a job it is to get the episodes made, especially with the immense visual effects.

"The final season's taking a long time because it's the biggest thing we've ever done," Benioff said backstage at this years Emmys.

"It was nearly a full year in Belfast either prepping it or actually shooting it. I think when people see it, they're going to understand why it took so long. The last season is far beyond what we've ever attempted before."

Richard Pepler, head of HBO, commented he's seen rough cuts of every episode of the final season. Lucky b*astard.

"It's a spectacle. The guys have done six movies. The reaction I had while watching them was, ‘I'm watching a movie,'" Plepler told Variety at a Golden Globes party.

"Benioff and D.B. Weiss knew the bar was high. They've exceeded the bar. I've watched them twice without any CGI and I'm in awe. Everybody's in for an extraordinary treat of storytelling and of magical, magical production."

Details are still pretty (Ned) Stark, however we do know that the BIGGEST Game of Thrones battle ever will take place, and allegiances are shaky AF as the White Walkers march onwards.

The final season is set to debut in April 2019, and Harington can't wait to release it;

"And that weight is off my shoulders. It's done now. I can be proud of it. We've got eight seasons, and they can sit on a bookshelf at home 'til the end of time," he said.

If you haven't seen Birdbox yet on Netflix, you may want to hop on that bandwagon, if only for the sake of these STUNNING make-up inspired lewks.

Sandra Bullock's massively successful horror thriller has the internet and streaming world absolutely hooked, not to mention competing in dangerous blindfold challenges.

We were graciously bequeathed with glorious memes at first, but now it's time for beauty to take over.

That's right, Birdbox beauty has begun and we are LIVING for it.

A real-life blindfold could come in useful in a nightclub…

Boy meets girl. Girl looks flawless and wigs are snatched. Boy needs blindfold to recuperate from seeing such staggering beauty up close. It's a realistic scenario, don't you think?

Why not give the trend a go and choose your favourite Bird Box concept for your next make-up regime, we guarantee you'll look incredible even while rowing a boat.

Scarlett Johansson has faced more than her fair share of sexist tirades against her as the highest paid woman in Hollywood.

The Avengers actress has previously experienced unsolicited nudes of her leaking online, and is now speaking out against the onslaught of deepfake pornography featuring her face generated onto the bodies of porn stars.

'Deepfake' (a 'deep learning' and 'fake' portmaneau) is a form of artificial intelligence human image synthesis technique. It can combine and superimpose images and videos to create fake footage of a person which never actually happened.

This means that deepfake has led to an onslaught of pornography featuring famous celebrity fames generated onto porn star's bodies, and it's essentially unregulated according to the Washington Post.

 A hacker was sent to prison for 12 years in 2012 following a leak of nude images of Johansson and other A-List celebrities such as Jennifer Lawrence.

When it comes to deepfakes, arrests can be irrepressibly difficult to make. AI-generated videos of the star's face on porn star's bodies have plagued the actress, and she has chosen to speak out;

"I think it’s a useless pursuit, legally, mostly because the internet is a vast wormhole of darkness that eats itself,” she tells the Washington Post.

She implies that the time has come for her to give up her relentless pursuit, due to the impossibility of the technology itself. Tracking down the culprits within and outside of the US is a tedious task.

“The internet is just another place where sex sells and vulnerable people are preyed upon,” she says, in a weary tone.

"Every country has their own legalese regarding the right to your own image, so while you may be able to take down sites in the U.S. that are using your face, the same rules might not apply in Germany," she comments, in exasperation.

"Even if you copyright pictures with your image that belong to you, the same copyright laws don’t apply overseas. I have sadly been down this road many, many times."

"The fact is that trying to protect yourself from the internet and its depravity is basically a lost cause, for the most part." Anyone is vulnerable to exploitative attacks such as these when it comes to the power of the web.

She suggests that the black hole of the internet is so depraved, "it's only a matter of time" before any individual will be targeted.

A number of internet giants have taken steps to police fake AI pornography, and porn in general on their sites, such as Reddit and Tumblr.

However, PornHub had claimed to have taken down and "banned" deepfakes ten months ago, yet there are still videos uploaded of Scarlett Johansson today.

Seems fruitless, and disturbing.

We certainly hope steps will be taken to regulate technology such as this in the future, the dangers of deepfakes are countless; between hoaxes, fake terrorism videos, false threats and identity theft/impersonation for pornography, its a dark, deep web out there.

Chris Rock has claimed that the current state of comedy has made it next to impossible to say anything "offensive and funny" anymore due to backlash.

While on presenting duties the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, he was presenting Bo Burnham with the Best First Film prize and joked;

"If it was five years ago, I could say something really offensive and funny right now, but I can’t do that anymore, so… hey!“

Hart controversially rejected the chance to apologise, after the Academy said they would be open to his return after doing so.

He then appeared on Ellen DeGeneres' day-time TV show, where she called for him to reconsider hosting the gig, but the job remains unfilled.

The LGBT+ are asking Hart to learn from the situation and act as an ally, rather than turn away from the problem.

Sarah Silverman was then criticised by Nick Cannon for old tweets containing homophobic slurs which Cannon claims she never faced consequences for.

Cannon believed it was a race issue, where black male comedians were facing different playing fields than their white, or female, counterparts.

A number of LGBT+ comedians rushed to Silverman's defence, claiming she had changed her actions and gracefully apologised, unlike Hart.

Chris Rock hosted the Oscars himself in 2005 and 2016, but said: “Steve Martin should host the Oscars! Because I’m not doing it, goddammit! You’re not getting me.”

The last time the Academy led the ceremony without a host was in 1989, so who knows what could happen this year?

One thing's for sure, Chris Rock has no intention on taking up the gig.

Women's bodies are complex, to say the least. Half the time we aren't sure what the hell is going on with them, but men are doubly confused.

This lady decided to tweet an image of skin-coloured nipple covers to see the level of knowledge which male brains could handle, and it essentially broke them.

Twitter user @cxffeinated cheekily wrote; "Since men know everything. What are these?" and the responses were absolutely GAS.

The guesses which came in were so pure, so absurd, and so… wrong.

The silicone nipple covers were mistaken for things such as petri dishes from laboratories, wax melts in 'Caribbean Peach' flavour, and even FROG EGGS. (We died at that one)

It has definitely proven that men do not, in fact, know everything.

Her boyfriend wanted to know the scientific scale, but he wasn't any closer to guessing correctly. Try again, lad.

Another wanted to ask if the nipple covers were actually a puncture repair kit.

Yes, that's a serious tweet. The poor fella is clueless;

Some estimates were over-confident, some were highly unsure of themselves, and others were just plain baffled.

R&B singer R Kelly is now facing a criminal investigation over allegations of sexual assault, rape, abuse and paedophilia after the airing of explosive documentary Surviving R Kelly.

The six-hour docu-series premiered on Lifetime and shocked its audience with its graphic and emotionally harrowing stories from dozens of accusers.

On-camera interviews with women who claim to have been held captive in incredibly abusive situations with Kelly provided upsetting testimonies, and now an investigation will officially take place.

TMZ reports that Georgia investigators received hundreds of calls once the episodes started airing in the US on January 3, and they are still aiming to speak with accusers.

The district attorney's office has yet to publicly comment on its investigation, but in Illinois, State Attorney Kim Foxx urged members of the public to come forward with relevant information.

Despite this, she stopped short of opening up her own criminal investigation, but said in a press conference that; "Listening to survivors and giving survivors a platform to tell their stories was heartbreaking,"

She also told reporters that she was "sickened" as both as a mother and as a prosecutor by the sexual abuse allegations made.

Kelly's manager has shockingly been accused of threatening the parents of Jocylen Savage, one of the alleged predator's abuse victims, in an attempt to dissuade them from appearing in the documentary.

Timothy Savage told an officer the day the series aired that Don Russell, the R&B singer's manager, texted him to say it would be best for his family if the documentary never aired.

Savage claimed himself and his wife were both involved with Lifetime's harrowing series.

Surviving R Kelly was created by feminist author and filmmaker dream hampton, and also includes celebrity appearances from John Legend and Chance the Rapper, who said collaborating with the Ignition singer was a "mistake."

Chance came under fire for admitting that he didn't listen to the women's testimony or value their stories "because they are black women".

A BBC Three documentary about the singer is also available to stream now. R Kelly has strenuously denied 30 years of abuse allegations made against him, including those made in the latest miniseries.
