Imagine a man in a tux at a black-tie event. He has the looks and style that grabs everyone’s attention, only to pose and reveal a canvas-strap wristwatch. Not to say that the canvas strap watches are inferior, but they are just not appropriate for the outfit.

Matching your watch to an outfit can be quite simple for a fashion savvy person, but it can be challenging for those who lack basic knowledge. Matching your watch with an outfit is actually a form of art.  We are currently obsessed with the official Olivia Burton watch range which you can wear with style.

The choice of watch you choose is a reflection of your personality, your style, and your tastes. Some may argue that matching your watch with your outfit depends on the band or strap, but a person who understands fashion will tell you that it’s more than that.

Many other factors come into play when choosing the right watch-outfit combinations. Below are a few guidelines to help you understand what goes with what.

Match Your Watch to the Formality of Your Outfit

Watches and outfits have levels of formality. A general rule of thumb when matching your watch with your outfit is to match the formality of your timepiece with the formality of your outfit. Let me explain further how you do that.

  1. Black Tie, White Tie

Traditionally, people were not supposed to wear a watch to a black-tie event. However, today you can wear a simple, classic dress watch. You don’t need to look flashy and extravagant on a black tie or white tie occasion, so a dress watch will do just fine.

Dress watches come in a wide range of styles and colours, but one with minimally embellished face and black leather band will be acceptable even to conservative observers.

  1. Business Formal

Business formal dresses are worn every day and are more versatile regarding what you can wear them with. Here you have a wide choice, but you don’t want to appear frivolous when at a meeting or business deal.

Dress watches are a perfect choice, especially if you’re wearing a dark suit. Dive watches are also an option as they are formal while still maintaining their functionality.

  1. Business Casual

This is the outfit that you wear everyday as you go to work such as a non-formal necktie optional business suit. Here we are talking about khakis, button-down shirts, sports coats, denim, leather shoes, etc.

The outfit is best complemented with a pilot watch, a high-end chronograph, or even a field watch. However, almost every type of watch can blend well with your casual business outfit.

  1. Casual Outfits

This is where your most casual clothes fall, including your jeans, polo shirts, and tees. All watch types, except the dress watch, will be perfect.

Dive watches, sports watches, pilot watches, and smartwatches can easily be matched with casual outfits. If you’re going to get involved in physical activity, the more rugged military watches would be ideal.

A note on military watches: Just like pilot watches and dive watches, military watches are not worn solely by officers, but rather can be worn by anyone.

They are quite classic and high-tech, and ideal for outdoor activities. To learn more about them, you can check out this list, and you might just fall in love with one.

  1. Sportswear

There are only a handful of watches you can wear while you engage in sports. However, this also depends on the kind of sport you’re participating in. If you’re only engaging in sports for recreational purposes, a field watch, dive watch, chronograph, and smartwatch can do. Just ensure that the watch is light and comfortable.

Match Your Watch Strap to the Formality of Your Outfit

Once you’ve decided on the type of watch that will match best with your outfit, you should go a step further to pair in terms of the material of the watch strap.

Leather bands are considered more formal than metal bands, and black is more formal than brown. Gold and silver metal bands are also appropriate for the most formal of events and can be ideal for dressy occasions.

Metal Complements Metal

The metal case of the watch and the metal bands should complement other metal accessories you’re wearing such as cufflinks, belt buckle, and shoe buckle. A gold watch can be worn with a gold belt buckle.

Leather Complements Leather

When wearing a leather strap watch, you should use your shoes as a reference. Match your belt to your shoes and then match your watch with both.

A brown leather band should be worn with a brown belt and brown shoes while a black band should go with a black belt and black shoes.

Metal Bands Match Better With Certain Colours of Clothes and Shoes

When a watch has a metal band, you can wear it with black or brown shoes. However, certain band colours work better with certain colours of clothes and shoes.

Gold watches are ideal for clothes and shoes in brown, tans, and beige tones while silver goes best with black, blue, and grey.

Conclusion

Wearing your watch to complement your outfit can be challenging but fun. People can often judge your sense of style by the small accessories you wear.

Therefore, while you may have a favourite watch in your collection, it’s important to match your watch to your outfit appropriately.

On November 29th, Deborah Ross of The Times wrote what can only be described as a SCATHING article about influencers which began like this;

"I have a dream. It is not a big dream. I am not Martin Luther King. I only do dreams on a small scale, so it is a small-scale dream and my small-scale dream is this: might there be any way we could do a find and replace on the word “influencer” so it is replaced by “detestable freeloader” wherever it appears? So we all know what, in fact, we are dealing with."

Yikes. To add to the drama-fest, YouTuber and Blogosphere's Influencer of the Year 2018 Melanie Murphy has responded.

We have to say, Murphy makes some noteworthy points;

Starting off her 13-minute YouTube video with a cool "Okay Deborah, calm down", she proceeds to explain the hypocrisy behind Ross' points with a level of clarity which is hard to deny.

Ross essentially slated influencers in her article, describing them as 'detestable freeloaders', essentially people who deserve to be hated because they receive complimentary items and give nothing in return.

Murphy responds by issuing the point that the media in general is funded by advertising and marketing, for example, on the bottom of Ross' article had a sponsored post, without which the article possibly would never have been read.

Promotion and marketing absolutely surrounds us, from celebrities such as David Beckham for Adidas, Beyoncé for Pepsi, Justin Timberlake for McDonalds, Jessica Simpson for WeightWatchers, Brad Pitt for whatever cologne he's feeling that day, Julia Roberts for Lancôme, Hannah Witton for PlayStation, Holly Willoughby for Marks & Spencer etc etc.

It's inescapable. However, just because they receive free objects doesn't mean that they give nothing in return.

The issue which Murphy takes with Ross' article is the sheer hypocrisy as well as the generalisations which she makes. She places every influencer in the same category, when many of them promote noble causes such as LGBT+ charities and organisations, cruelty-free and paraben-free beauty products, health foods, nutrition, sexual health organisations, disability and accessibility rights, chronic pain activists, and more.

Jameela Jamil's i_Weigh movement has become hugely successful, and empowers people to weigh themselves on their overall worth as a person rather than their body mass index. Jamil suffered from an eating disorder for years, and now uses promotion and Instagram to create a unified group of people who value and respect themselves. She also is a major campaigner for banning airbrushing.

Melanie Murphy claims that every successful creative has the support of brands behind them, and receive freebies. Many of them self-fund their projects, and use the money for other causes, others simply give away any freebies which they receive.

Murphy also points out that just because they gain complimentary products does not mean that those people aren't extremely hardworking. Many influencers balance their life online with their family and a side-job.

"95% of what I show, what I wear, I pay for myself," she claims. Through advertising and word of mouth, companies can use influencers for their branding, but this doesn't undermine the level of thought which goes into choosing which brands to work with.

Murphy works with Always pads to talk openly about periods, Barclays, who sponsor Pride, a show which explores bisexuality, PicMonkey, Wella for hair dyes which work against allergies, Holland and Barrett for cruelty-free health and nutrition products.

Numerous influencers and their agents are hugely picky about who they work with, the brands must make sense for the influencers for them to collaborate with them.

"I'm always so bloody proud of my paid-for content, always. The money these brands pay me enables me to write a novel and work on more artsy things like short films which I invest in myself but don't get money back."

According to the Youtuber, the media wouldn't survive without branding and advertisements. From YouTube ads to websites, podcasts, radio, television, newspapers and magazines, advertising is saturated in our industry.

For Deborah Ross to call followers of influencers 'morons' is entirely unfair, from Melanie's point of view;

"Under-researched drivel such as this which contributes to the negative rhetoric that surrounds bloggers and influencers, thousands of hard-working people. Some of which juggle a family or another job."

Many believe for Ross to declare that influencers have done nothing to merit this lifestyle is flawed and reductive, Murphy herself demonstrates a great engagement because of how she chooses brands to work with;

"I never try sneak anything in, I'm never shady. I am lucky and I'm very grateful, I don't swan around."

Lastly, Murphy places emphasis on the fact that YouTube is a community which supports one another, they collaborate and shout each other out and lift each other up. In the journalism industry, there is minimal collaboration and no support between competing publications;

"You sit and write and you get aid to do that, there was a time where people would scoff at your job and say that that's not a real job. We actually support each other. You're not going to see The Times supporting an article from another publication."

It's International Day of Disabled Persons. This year's theme is “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusion and equality.” I think about this every day. Empowerment, inclusion, equality. It's in every story I tell. In every adventure I have. Every relationship I am in has navigated it to some extent. The other day I was talking to a friend who said, "I don't even see you as disabled, you just sit a lot for someone so active.” "I think I know what you mean, but I am disabled, it's not bad to me to be seen as disabled. When people say that, it's like they're saying, in order to accept you, I have to separate you from this thing I have a problem with.

She describes the loneliness which perpetuates society, and how YouTube can be used as escapism, or for self-help, for comedy, entertainment, advice or even just to connect;

"A lot of people are lonely and it's a beautiful thing to be able to connect with people through words through a lens. Families are smaller, the Church has collapsed, community has gone to shit. I feel like through my monthly blogs I encourage people to connect with their real-life friends and family"

As Murphy points out, building a following of thousands or millions doesn't just happen for no reason.

'Detestable freeloaders' aren't just empty vessels of advertisers; they're entertainers, they're singers, actors, writers, comedians, models, creatives, editors, lighting experts, agents and so much more.

Do you agree?

It's the body positive movie we have been waiting a lifetime for.

If you've seen Netflix's adaptation to Julie Murphy’s novel, Dumplin', you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

Starring Jennifer Aniston and Danielle Macdonald, it's a refreshing take on self-acceptance, beauty pageants and how the plus-size community are portrayed in the film industry.

Coming from a former fat girl, i.e. me, the movie didn't shy away from the very real stigma people face every day.

It's clear that the author and those who wrote the script had an insight into the real struggles plus-sized people face.

When the girls face this stigma, instead of running home and gorging on chocolate like most movies portray 'sad,' 'lonely' fat women, Danielle, who plays Willowdean Dickson, fights back.

In one scene, when a bully makes fun of another girl, Willowdean goes for the glory shot and punches him in the nuts, another clip shows her eye-rolling to slagging shouts of teens towards herself and co-star, Millie (played by Maddie Baillio).

Instead of playing the victim and the sad, fat girl, they portray young women leading a body revolution, and the film rightly shows those who bully the girls as total assholes.

Another perception they tackle in the movie is when an absolute ride of a fella asks Willowdean out.

Bo Larson is the hottie that works with our leading lady and is utterly taken by the teen.

After an ole snog on their first date, it was Willowdean, not Bo who needed some time to reflect.

Bo didn't go out with her for a bet, no fat jokes were made or any attempts of trying to make her turn from an "ugly duckling" into a swan – he liked her for her.

In fact, we saw a very real admission from Willowdean about how guys like him didn't go for girls like her – and he totally called horsesh*t on it.

He confessed that he thought she was beautiful and she is.

The film shows how despite society's best efforts to make us conform to a certain look to feel beautiful, that there are leaders out there who want you to embrace you for you and feel empowered as the sexy ladies we are.

No shame, no excuses, just love for the skin you're in.

The movie follows four teenage girls who take on a pageant competition – they're all very different in shape, size and style and they want to redefine the look of a beauty queen.

One of our fave part of Dumplin' is that it shows a number of different plus-sized women and drag queens totally owning their identity.

Instead of just one fat girl, there are plenty of plus-size role models – her aunt and friend, Millie.

The role models in the film extend their knowledge of self-acceptance and give the young women buckets of inspiration to go up on stage and take it over.

The women all go on very unique paths in the film, and it shows that plus-sized women are diverse and they have multiple voices on screen – they aren't cast as the 'fat friend'.

Dumplin' creates a positive body narrative through their journey and doesn't force the characters to lose weight in order to be confident.

They project the message that confidence is achieved through finding your inner-self and letting it shine – no diet plan or killer exercise regime required.

It shows that you can be fat and happy, which is the reality for millions of people around the world.

We applaud everyone involved in its creation and we hope this is the way forward for the portrayal of plus-sized women.

If you haven't seen the film, please do.

Interesting.

He said, ''They’ve had a row, she’s got a bit emotional and I think she has whacked that [message] up and immediately regretted it.''

He continued, ''You know what women are like I’m just saying she got a little bit irate, screaming and shouting, the ultimate way to punish him maybe. I don’t know what was going on but I can tell you now, they’re sweet.''

He added that they had, ''a little argument as we all do, we all have tear ups.''

Dani might have deleted her break-up post but it all seems a bit of a mess to us – clear it up for us guys, will you? Cheers.

Another day, another totally ridiculous rental ad.

Taking full advantage of the housing crisis and people's desperation, you can now rent this beautiful mattress* for €350 a month.

Don't worry about a bed, you won't be having one of those.

Oh and cosy up – because you'll also be sharing this space.

You have the choice of two sleeping arrangements and the stained walls, lucky enough for you, are included in the price.

The advert reads that you'll need "350 euro in advance one month rent, plus 350 euro advance deposit, which is refundable in the future with minimum four weeks in advance notice period required by the either side to get returned of yours one month 350 euro advance deposit, if any party have any time any other plan in the future"  – is that confusing enough for you?

This bargain property will give you a month's electricity and Internet bills included in the 350 euro per month.

But hang on, it gets even better: if two people want to share the double bed, get ready to pay 500 euro per person…which includes those pesky bills.

You'll be living with two people who are in their 30s and enjoy cooking, cleaning (could have fooled me), cinema, movies and weekend nights out.

This is prime property in Clontarf and the kitchen comes with a "shakes machine" and an "electric cattle" – I'm sure there's a mistranslation here but come on.

And anyone who lists a hob and an oven as an amenity – seriously raises an eyebrow.

But I think in this case, their pictures of the house is case and point.

The government has a lot to answer for when people are subjected to rental conditions like this.

We can't judge the people who put up the ad though – since they are also subjected to the horrendous housing crisis we are all living in.

EDIT: This listing has since been removed.

Rupert Grint has spoken about his net worth, and it's fair to say we're more than a bit jealous.

The former Ron Weasley was interviewed by The Radio Timesand his funds happened to come up in the conversation.

Naturally, everyone has something to say about it, seeing as his worth in 2016 was estimated to be a whopping €50 million, less than half of Daniel Radcliffe's estimated worth.

He told the publication that he tries not to pay much attention to his financial needs, but says he is "comfortable". Well for some isn't it?

Figures seem to go way over his head, based on these quotes;

"I actually don't know how much I have. I couldn't even really guess."

"It doesn't really motivate me too much. It makes you comfortable, that's the good thing about it, I think. I'm glad it's there but I'm not really that focused on it."

We'd be running around Brown Thomas spending an absolute fortune on nonsensical items which we totally don't need… but each to their own, I guess?

The actor has taken on roles since Harry Potter wrapped up in 2011, starring in Sick Note on Sky One, and the Snatch reboot.

He will also star in The BBC production of Agatha Christie's The ABC Murders alongside John Malkovich as Hercule Poirot.

Mr Weasley's down-to-earth spending habits appear to parallel with Harry and Hermione's.

Daniel Radcliffe told the Belfast Telegraph back in 2016 that he pretty much leaves his $100 million fortune alone.

"I'm very grateful for it, because having money means you don't have to worry about it, which is a very lovely freedom to have. It also gives me immense freedom, career-wise," he said.

The first thing he did in 2011 after hanging up his cloak and wand was get his tonsils removed;

"It was too much recovery time and there was the fear that it would change my voice."

Well Rupert, no one can say that you're not a normal lad. Too normal, in fact.

Jennifer Aniston has had her fair share of headlines over her lengthy career in TV and movies.

But now, on the cusp of hitting her milestone 50th birthday, she says that she is perfectly content with how her life is – and her career is certainly going from strength to strength.

She sat down with ELLE magazine to open about her life, love and how she's won't let her age get in the way of having a family.

The public's fascination with her

The media have been obsessed with Jennifer since her days of Friends – when is she getting married? Is she pregnant? When will she get pregnant?

She believes that using marriage and children as the ultimate marker of female happiness is a way to disempower successful women.

She says, ''What quantifies happiness in someone’s life isn’t the ideal that was created in the ’50s. It’s not like you hear that narrative about any men.”

She added, ''Why do we want a happy ending? How about just a happy existence? A happy process? We’re all in process constantly.''

Womanhood

Jennifer is keen to make sure that women know that they have other options – that being a wife and mother aren't the only ones.

She said, ''We live in a society that messages women: By this age, you should be married; by this age, you should have children. That’s a fairy tale. That’s the mould we’re slowly trying to break out of.''

How has the media's response to her not having kids affected her?

She said, ''It’s such a shallow lens that people look through. It’s the only place to point a finger at me as though it’s my damage – like it’s some sort of a scarlet letter on me that I haven’t yet procreated, or maybe won’t ever procreate.”

Is a family something she wants?

She said,  "Who knows what the future holds in terms of a child and a partnership – how that child comes in…or doesn't? And now with science and miracles, we can do things at different times than we used to be able to."

Her marriages

The actor has been married twice – to Brad Pitt from 2000 to 2005, and Justin Thereoux from 2015 to 2017.

She believes that her unions have been successful.

She said, ''When they came to an end, it was a choice that was made because we chose to be happy, and sometimes happiness didn't exist within that arrangement anymore."

Sure, there were bumps, and not every moment felt fantastic, obviously, but at the end of it, this is our one life and I would not stay in a situation out of fear. Fear of being alone. Fear of not being able to survive. To stay in a marriage based on fear feels like you’re doing your one life a disservice.

Social Media

Jennifer is not a fan of social media – and for good reason.

She said, ''The one thing I have is maintaining this little circle of sanctity that’s my own.''

She added, ''If I’m sitting here posting something about my dogs or I’m Boomeranging my coffee mug in the morning, that’s just giving away one more piece of something that is mine."

Her relationship with her mum

Jen was famously estranged from her mum, former model Nancy Dow, for years.

She opens up about their strained relationship, which began when she was a kid and her mother was focused on Jennifer's physical appearance.

Jennifer said, ''It wasn't her fault, it's just the things she would teach me…It didn't instil a lot of security about how I felt about my physical appearance."

She continued, ''I think she was just holding on and doing the best she could, struggling financially and dealing with a husband who was no longer there. Being a single mom in the ’80s I’m sure was pretty crappy.”

We're sure 2019 will be another stellar year for Jennifer – and that she will continue to live her life according to her own rules.
