What does it mean to be an ‘empowered woman’ in 2019?

The phrase ‘empowered woman’ is intrinsically loaded with underlying meaning and misunderstood perceptions. When many of us hear the phrase, most people envision a sexually-promiscuous woman who refuses to have children and most likely drinks scotch.

Arguably, its meaning has dramatically changed in the last year, ever since actress Alyssa Milano’s ‘Me Too’ tweet went viral.

2018 has not been the easiest of times for Irish women.

Watching the news everyday has been a tortuous experience, with violence against women splashed across every publication, the media raining debilitating double standards upon anyone remotely famous and the paparazzi splashing unflattering female body images across the internet.

Two massively painful rape trials have illuminated the imperative need for changes in the Irish law regarding sexual violence and assault, and the horrific way in which women are treated and cross-examined in the courtroom.

The Repeal movement was draining for everyone involved, the right to bodily autonomy is still undeniably under threat.

It’s worth noting that standards are changing all around us, lines are being drawn, boundaries are being set. Finally, I might add.

Women are always hyper-aware of the need for self-protection, especially when it comes to sex and dating.

We’ve all held our keys in between our knuckles as we walk down a dimly-lit road at night, we’ve all experienced unwanted attention on nights out, and we’ve all worried about what we wear, and the negative consequences our clothes could potentially bring.

Standards of relationships are changing in conjunction, as women entering the dating world have new questions which they are asking of potential lovers.

This also stands for workplace relationships, women are fighting back against pay inequality and sexism which are prevalent even in first-world countries such as Ireland and the UK.

Watching Little Mix and Ariana Grande fight back against Piers Morgan's recent sexist comments has been such a breath of fresh air.

The #MeToo and TimesUp movements have been eye-opening experiences for men, women and intersex people worldwide, with every facet of society examining its own behaviour with a new lens.

Unlike most men, women are expected to be looking for love around every corner.

During our teens and 20s, being single is depicted as a hugely empowering, freeing experience, yet a shadow dawns on the eve of our 30th birthdays: the misogynistic view that our biological clocks are ticking, and where on earth is our husband?

I have learnt many things from relationships, mainly that learning who you are can often only become a reality when you face tough aspects of life alone.

This is not true for everyone, of course, but many women in this day and age have to shrug off countless societal pressures and notions which are veiled in misogyny and shame.

Female empowerment in this article can only be relevant to my personal experiences, women are extremely complex beings and each feels empowered in totally different ways.

For women with disabilities, of different ages, gender binaries, classes and ethnicities, feeling good about ourselves comes in all shapes and forms.

Sex is power, #MeToo has taught me that. I cannot speak for other women, especially those in the LGBT+ community, but as a heterosexual woman, I have also learned many other hard lessons about the need to empower myself and have control over my body and mind.

Women are not therapists, we cannot be expected to handle the emotional baggage of other people.

We have enough of our own. Watching Ariana get blamed for Mac Miller's death is a primary example of the degradation placed on people for leaving toxic relationships.

Ariana Grande has entered ultimate female empowerment mode, sporting a friendship ring instead of her recent engagement rock, and regularly posting images of classic film stars and female icon moments on her Instagram account.

Her new music video will be a tribute to classic movies with female leads such as 13 Going On 30, Mean Girls, Bring It On and Legally Blonde.

Thank u, next; Ari’s latest phenomenally successful single, pays homage to her past loves before declaring that her relationship with herself is now a priority.

Reports claim that her ex-fiancé, Pete Davidson, did not support her sufficiently following the death of Mac Miller, her former love.

Ariana explained how toxic her relationship with Miller was; she endured the pain of watching someone they love struggle through addiction but realised that it was expected of her to ‘fix’ his pain, to mother him through his issues.

Her realisation that she could not carry out this burden was imperative.

When Davidson joked about swapping Grande’s birth control pills on Saturday Night Live, the reaction was mixed.

Many wondered why controversy erupted over the comment, yet many reflected on the notion of literally trapping a woman into staying with you through pregnancy, a huge emotional and physical ordeal for women.

Realise that we are not defined by our relationship status, and to have a relationship with yourself can be an incredibly growth experience.

Letting go of the pressure to always have an ‘other half’ can be freeing in itself. Don’t underestimate the value of your friendships, especially female ones.

SEX is empowering:

Learning what you like (this applies to anyone with a sexual partner- in a relationship or not) is CRUCIAL.

Women have always been expected to satisfy men in terms of sex, the language was never granted to us regarding how to communicate our desires, and how to find pleasure.

Consent in this country has always been a murky topic, hidden under the surface.

A post shared by rupi kaur (@rupikaur_) on

I never heard the word mentioned until I went to college, and by the time I learnt the word’s true meaning, I had already had unconsensual experiences without truly understanding them at all.

Educating ourselves about consent, and only having relationships with those who truly respect us and our bodies can be incredibly empowering.

Learn how to say no, be selfish.

Women cannot be expected to please everyone, all the time. Often we have to work incredibly hard, in our employment or relationships, to get the achievements we deserve.

Learning to put yourself first can be a massive way of respecting our own mental health and practicing self-love and acceptance.

Ask yourself, what do YOU want, instead of what does everyone else want of you.

Learning new skills

Self -defence classes, a new language, a skill such as website building, graphic design, even calligraphy. Why not?

If you have valuable assets such as the ability to drive, and even do nitpicky jobs such as online banking or tax can be empowering in terms of releasing yourself from co-dependence.

Don’t let opportunities pass you by.

Go with your instincts. Do what you’ve always wanted to do, but always found an excuse never to do it. You miss 100% of the chances you let pass by, and you never know how much you can gain from letting your fears dissipate and challenging yourself.

Mental health

The importance of having a health mind can never be underestimated. Take personal time whenever you know that you need it, don't succumb to pressure.

Body confidence

Society makes it so damn hard to allow you to feel secure in your own skin. In a world with such fascination with image and beauty, loving yourself is a completely rebellious act.

Beyonce Satisfying GIF

Everyone is unique, so don’t try to fit a beauty mould which will undoubtedly change in the next five to ten years.

In the 90s it was bone glamour with malnourished models such as Kate Moss on the runway looking like all they needed most was a McDonalds, and now the Kardashians have transformed cosmetic beauty into plastic surgery-induced curves, glossy brunette hair and big lips and bums.

Who knows what the next big trend will be, but why force yourself to look like someone else? You are worth so much more than what you weigh or what you see in the mirror.

Taking control of your love life

The laws of dating have transformed recently, with apps such as Bumble finally realising that women don’t always want to wait around for the right person to ask them on a date.

Try asking someone out, the worst that can happen is that they say no.

Food and health

I lived in San Francisco for four months and had the most atrocious diet, and when I came home I vowed to learn at least ten easy home-cook meals that are quick to make, and have health benefits. Having independence in terms of your body and health can be crucial to an empowering mindset, especially for women with chronic health problems.

Finding career success can be a huge morale boost, especially for women. Success shouldn’t be based on how much you earn, but how much you love your job and how you contribute to bringing a positive energy to the world around you.

Fight to be heard at the table, realise how intelligent you are and how you should be valued in your workplace. Don’t let anyone invalidate you.

You have the key to your own happiness, no one else.

A post shared by rupi kaur (@rupikaur_) on

To be totally independent, ‘empowered’ single gal has countless benefits. Find your own definition of ‘empowerment’, some women are empowered by their style, their job, their relationship, their sex life, and others are empowered simply by being happy in their own skin.

Whether you're feeling great and powerful totally covered up or completely naked, do whatever makes you happy.

Only one in every 10 million of the world's population are 110-years-old or older, and Agnes Fenton is one of them.

For 70 years, Agnes from New Jersey had drank three beers and a shot of whiskey everyday and she is still going strong.

She has good hearing and sight and she spends her days reading the paper, listening to the radio and hanging out with her friends.

It sounds like she's really living the dream, she sleeps a lot and she loves chicken wings, green beans and sweet potatoes and she has no serious health problems.

This is not exactly what you would expect from someone who drinks every day, but yes every single day for 70 years she drank three cans of Miller High Life and a shot of Johnnie Walker whiskey. According to Agnes, after a serious health problem several years ago, the doctor told her to drink three beers a day and that's exactly what she did.

Recently she has quit drinking after 70 years on the advice of the people looking after her as she doesn't eat as much as she used to.

Agnes has been part of a study that focuses on people who live to be over 100-years-old and data has been collected on her for five years.

The head of this study said all of the people over 100 taking part in this study have a secret to staying alive so long but she's not so sure Anges' is alcohol.

But if you're planning on following Agnes' plans to try surpass that 100-year-old mark, we're not really sure we would advise it…

Man caves had totally taken over without much of a female equivalent, but we are happy to announce that girls are now being given a few more options.

Now us gals will also have our own place to get away from it all, without being disturbed and being extremely comfy all the while.

The 'she shed' is the newest trend in garden innovation and has us seriously planning weekend DIY project.

These she sheds range from purpose built small buildings, to aluminium sheds that have basically just been pimped.

One you have a comfy place to sit and electricity installed, you're pretty much good to go.

This would be your hideaway for reading or Netflix bingeing, or you could even create your own built-in bar (yes, yes, and YES!).

To create your own perfect she shed you need a space first of all. even cleaning out the old abandoned shed or an unused corner of the house would do, as long as you're comfy.

You would need a source of electricity next, and hopefully an extension lead from the house will do the trick.

Then the rest is up to you! If you just want to use it to chill out, somewhere comfy to sit and a nice blanket would be required. But if you want to use it to work or pursue a hobby, then a desk would be a great addition too.

Then it's up to you to get as creative as you want with it, fairly lights galore!

This 911 call will raise the hairs on the back of your neck – and you can’t even hear it.

A victim of domestic abuse raised an alarm at her house by ordering pizza – but she had actually dialled 911.

At first, the operator, Keith Weisinger, is somewhat confused by the woman’s call, but soon come to realise her covert operation.

He later told the story on Reddit, in his own words.

Here is how the call went:

“911, where is your emergency?”
“123 Main Street”
“Okay, what’s going on there?”
“I’d like to order a pizza for delivery” (Oh great, another prank call)
“Ma’am, you’ve reached 911”
“Yeah, I know. Can I have a large with half pepperoni, half mushroom and peppers?”
“Ummm…I’m sorry, you know you’ve called 911, right?”
“Yeah, do you know how long it will be?”
“Ok, Ma’am is everything ok over there? Do you have an emergency?”
“Yes, I do”
“And you can’t talk about it because there’s someone in the room with you?” (moment of realisation)
“Yes, that’s correct. Do you know how long it will be?”
“I have an officer about a mile from your location. Are there any weapons in your house?”
“Can you stay on the phone with me?”
“Nope. See you soon, thanks.”

Weisinger then checked the address given and discovered multiple domestic disputes reported from there.

Police officers at the location found the woman beaten up with her drunk boyfriend in the house and Weisinger says he’ll never forget the clever rouse she used to raise the alarm of her abuse.

Chris Brown could be in a spot of bother where his questionable reputation stands!

The rapper was recorded shoving a woman who leaned in for a kiss at Limelight in Houston recently.

TMZ reports that the rapper was with his girlfriend, Karrueche Tran at the time the incident occurred.

In the video, the woman can be seen leaning into Chris for a kiss before he angrily refutes her advances and continues on his way.

While the woman was of course, uninjured, this probably wasn’t the best move for Chris as he tried to mend his reputation following an incident in 2009 where he beat up then girlfriend, Rihanna.

Going to the gym just isn't for anyone – some people love it and some loathe it. Exercise is essential for our mental and physical health, we get it.

1. Removal
Must get out of these pajamas and off the couch. We will not be succumb to this relaxation anymore. NO – I’ll go now.

2. Dress Code
What to wear, what to wear. Queue raking through your wardrobe for 20 minutes.

3. Transport
If you have to get the bus there will be less of a chance you will go. If you have a car or are getting a lift it will be slightly easier. The whole way there you’re trying to procrastinate and if there’s anything you can remember you have to do instead – you will do it. No luck so far and you arrive at your destination.

4. Arrival
Get out your gym membership card and off you go. You are starting to feel happy you have made this decision. You get to the changing room and scope out the room. This locker looks good – ah there is something in it. This one – oh it’s taken. That one – ah yes finally. You put a lock on it because no one will be taking your new iPhone. iPod out, water filled, “LET’S DO THIS!”

5. Machine Referral
Good it isn’t too packed. "Oh God is that…it is. oh no no no no." Just hide behind behind the bodybuilders and they won't see you.

6. Work Out
Your warrior name is Beyoncé. Embody this determination and soldier on – you can finish this. Next stop the bike. I am an independent woman.

7. Sweating Dilemma
You look like a tomato in a warm country – but soldier on this is HEALTH.

8. Embarrassing Moment
Okay okay, so you did a Bridget Jones and fell off the bloody exercise bike. Not many people saw so it’s all good.

9. Staff Encounter
“Excuse me, where is your towel?” “Oh, sorry, I must have left it at home. I completely forgot it”. “Don’t let this happen again it is unhygienic.” Eek!

10. Finishing Line
1 more minute and you are free. 60, 59, 58, 57, 25, 10, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. YESSSS – It still counts.

A woman named Jasmine Tridevil from Florida has revealed the plastic surgery she had to have an extra breast.

Yes, an extra breast. As in she now has three breasts.

The bizarre request was turned down by several doctors (no shock there) before one said yes, although she won’t name the doctor who performed the surgery (no shock there).

When asked during an interview why she would want to have three breasts, she answered: “I wanted to make myself unattractive to men. Because I don’t want to date anymore.”

The story has now blown up and Jasmine will be appearing on many shows, including Jimmy Kimmel Live she says.

Something tells us this isn’t the last we’ve heard of Jasmine and her third breast.

Well, whatever makes her happy, we guess!

Whenever Siva Kaneswaran from The Wanted tries to do a good deed, it never seems to go well.

Back in April, he and his band mate Jay McGuiness were attacked by a homeless guy with a knife when they tried to give him money. And now? He’s been punched in the face after trying to save a woman who was being attacked by her boyfriend!

The Irish singer was walking around New York City last month with his rep, when he saw the woman being attacked, and without a hint of hesitation, he ran over to break up the fight!

Apparently, Siva told the guy to chill out, only to be told: “This isn’t about you!” So instead, he tried to hold him off, and got a black eye in the process. Thankfully though, the woman managed to escape while Siva was holding her boyfriend down. The attacker then fled the scene as well.

He told reporters: "I am no hero, I just wanted to prevent her from being hit."

A hero AND modest? Well, he’s almost too good to be true! Siva is hoping the woman will contact him so that he knows she’s ok. Here’s hoping his act of bravery made a difference!

There has been some bad news from Stradbally after a man and woman’s tent caught fire at Electric Picnic in the early hours of the morning.

The fire started around 5am in the Pink Moon campsite where the pair was staying.

The couple are believed to have fallen asleep after lighting candles in their tent.

They were both taken to Portlaoise General Hospital for treatment before the woman was transferred to St James’ Hospital in Dublin.

Their injuries are believed not to be life-threatening.

We hope they both recover very soon!

A woman was punched in the face at Notting Hill Carnival on Monday.

The reason? She asked him to stop groping her.

Mary Brandon was attending the fun event when the man in question put his hand on her bum, describing the shocking incident on her Facebook page, Mary said: “At Notting Hill Carnival yesterday a man in the crowd grabbed my ar**. When I told him not to he did it again. I pushed him away, exercising my right to tell a man to stop touching my body without my permission, so he took a swing at me and punched me in the face.”

Mary was then forced to spend nine hours in the hospital getting her injuries tended to.

She went on to say how this unacceptable behaviour has affected the way she feels she must deal with future similar incidents: “A woman should be able to leave the house without fear of being sexually assaulted whether in future it’s best not to do anything at all. Maybe it’d be safer to ignore it when someone invades your personal space. But I can honestly say I will always stand up to someone who thinks they can get away with this behaviour and I’d take a punch again.”

The police are currently investigating the incident.

Despite the horrific crime against her, we are so glad she is standing strong and not allowing this man to make her feel afraid or scared about standing up for herself.

All the best for your recovery, Mary!

It may be hard to believe it when you look outside today, but there is a localised flood warning in place!

The warning will be initiated tonight at 9pm until 9pm Saturday night.

So, while you may be out sunning yourself today, make the most of it as torrential and thundery rain is set to begin this evening. Eek!

There are some things in life that can make us super, super mad. Even if they aren’t that big of a deal, we can often be seen FREAKING out over some of life’s little annoyances. Here are some of the worst offenders:

1. Sleeping through your alarm

Just five minutes…another five…and another. Until next thing you know it’s 11am and you’re over two hours late for work. Nooooo!

2. Having no decent, clean clothes

Seriously? Didn’t you do a wash like, yesterday?!

3. Discovering there’s no milk for your cereal

Nothing but an empty carton. Not even a drop left for a decent cup of tea. Who would do such a thing?! They WILL pay.

4. Missing the bus

giphy (2)

Another one will come along in 5  minutes, it’s not so bad. 45 minutes later, broken umbrella half shielding you from the rain – still no bus.

5.Bus journeys

Is there anything as bad?

6. Getting your feet wet

Ah the sun is out – flip flops! Halfway to work there is a downpour. An entire day of squidgy feet is just the worst.

7. Being really hungry and getting a horrible sandwich

Well, in fairness, why did you think egg mayo and tuna would work? It’s always such a panic at the deli counter.

8. Someone standing on your foot (and not apologising)

The height of rudeness.

9. A missed call from a private number

Great, that was probably your big break.

10. Stupid spam emails

Ooh an email! Noooo…

11. Attention seeking Facebook statuses – Hope Y3R óK HUn

“PM me hun.”

12. Your mother

Don’t get us wrong, we LOVE our mammies. Just not at 7.30am on a Saturday morning when they want to know if you would like to go for a walk.

13. Wearing too many layers and sweating profusely

Being all sweaty and stressed is enough to provoke anger, but add a fear of sweat patches and smelling into the mix and it’s enough to make you want to jump into the cold recesses of the nearest pond.

14. Having a low phone battery and no charger

Nothing beats the self inflicted anger that you will feel, upon boarding a bus and discovering that your phone is nearly dead. Fantastic, a two hour bus journey without music or internet. How WILL we survive?

15. Spending ages making dinner and then burning it

HOW did that happen?! You were SO careful this time!

16. Finally getting into the shower and finding there’s no hot water

17. Tripping over in public (when alone)

Should you laugh at yourself? Ignore it? Oh Gawwwd.

18. Meeting someone you don’t like

You look like crap, and now this? Ugh.

19. Being too hot under the duvet but too cold without it

So uncomfortable.

20. Not being able to sleep even though you’re really tired

Now your going to be all tired again tomorrow. Such a vicious circle.
