In worrying news, a new survey has found that the majority of Irish beaches and rivers are polluted, with one-in-six deemed "clean to European norms".

The most common forms of litter discovered by assessors included food wrappers, plastic bottles, cans and cigarettes, according to The Journal.

Five-in-six beaches and waterways examined as part of Irish Business Against Litter's survey were considered clean enough to meet European standards.

The study analysed 42 areas across Ireland by IBAL, and only 1-in-6 beaches were clean enough to meet the standards. 14 percent were classified as ‘littered’ or ‘heavily littered’.

Beaches, harbours, rivers and their immediate environs were monitored by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce over the summer, with fishing industry-related litter found in almost all marine sites.

Salthill was stated to be one of the cleanest beaches in the country, and the report praised the Galway beach as a “well used and cared for environment”.

Curracloe beach in Wexford was also added to the 'clean' list for having 'a virtual absence of litter', but Seapoint in Dublin was the only other beach considered clean.

Lough Rea, the River Shannon at Carrick-on-Shannon, the Nore in Kilkenny and KiImore Quay harbour in Wexford were also inspected as clean.

The Barrow in Carlow town and the Tolka in Dublin were both heavily littered, along with Cork Harbour near Midleton.

Cork harbour was “subject to dumping, with heavy levels of land-based food-related items and large numbers of traffic cones and household appliances discarded in the water”, according to the report.

Inspectors claimed that the River Barrow at Carlow had “a very definite heavy litter presence … with a wide variety of regular litter, both land- and water-based."

Blackrock Castle also had “heavy levels of plastic bottles, plastic bags, cans, food / sweet wrappers and large pieces of plastic … several plastic bags of rubbish and other miscellaneous items were dumped adjacent to the coast.”

Bundoran, Dingle, Kinsalem Brittas Bay in Wicklow, Dun Laoghaire harbour, Tramore beach in Waterford, Portmarnock beach in Dublin and the tourist destination of Lahinch were considered “moderately littered.

Conor Horgan spoke as a representative of IBAL, saying that the need for action on plastic pollution in aquatic environments was increasingly more vital;

“Our regular surveys consistently show 80% of our towns to be clean; we cannot say the same for our beaches and waterways.

“Litter as we know it has acquired a wholly new importance for society. This is especially true for an island like Ireland, where litter can readily wind its way to the sea irrespective of where it is dropped," he added,

“When it comes to marine litter the sea starts at every household, street, green space and workplace.”

We were all dragged to various Irish beaches as a child, and most likely didn't appreciate them for how beautiful they were at the time.

From the beaches of Wexford like Curracloe and Rosslare to the Wild Atlantic Way's gems along the Dingle peninsula and Sligo; we've got some absolute beauties in the Emerald Isle.

Apparently, everyone else in the world agrees with this statement. A travel media company which specialises in travel guides for adventurers, Big 7, has named a County Mayo beach as number 11 in the world.

Image: Instagram/@ailismangan

Keem Bay in Mayo has earned the 11th spot in their list of the global 50 best beaches, and we're fairly chuffed with ourselves.

First Skellig Michael appears in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, and now the beaches around Achill Island are reppin'? We're certainly punching above our weight.

Writing in the guide, they state:

"Keem Bay is a breathtaking rural and sheltered beach surrounded by cliffs on Ireland's largest island – Achill Island. Its gleaming white sand rivals tropical islands and the water is superbly clear."

Image: Instagram/@alisonlacloche

They add: "The sun might not always be shining, but when it does it’s world-class. And yes, it’s beautiful even on a rainy day." Dead right.

The beach is cradled by the rolling green hills of Benmore and Croaghaun mountain on three sides and opens out onto clear blue waters. It's brilliant if you want an escape from urban life.

We were narrowly beaten from entering the top 10 by famed Pig Beach in the Bahamas. Zlanti rat (Golden Horn Beach) in Brac, Croatia, snagged the number one spot.

Glass Beach in California, black sand beaches of Reynisfjara Beach in Vík í Mýrdal, Iceland, the unpolluted Grace Bay in Turks and Caicos and dunes of Whitehaven Beach in Whitsunday Islands, Australia, were also included.

Praia do Camilo in Lagos, Portugal, with its orange cliffs and golden sandy beaches, also landed in the top 10. The beaches are all otherworldly and stunning in their own right, so we're considering ourselves lucky to have even made the top 50.

It's happened to many of us…we're travelling to the most Instagram-able spots in the world, yet there's nobody to take photos of us in all our cultured glory.

Whether it's Niagara Falls, the Colosseum of Rome or the white sand beaches in Bali, sometimes a great candid is all we crave. Why waste the opportunity?

If your own significant other can barely hold a camera, or if you're a single solo traveller, finding somebody to capture us at our finest moment can be tedious at best.

Not all of us have a John Legend to work his magic on the lens for the sake of our followers:

Instagram is even acting as an influential factor in choosing a travel destination, with a ludicrous 40.1% of millennials deeming the site an important factor when considering a holiday. My God, what have we become?

Ireland has been enjoying plenty of sunshine and high temperatures over the past week. The public has certainly been making the most of this heatwave with thousands flocking to their local park and beach to soak up the sun.

Unfortunately, a group of beach-goers ruined one of Ireland’s most-loved beaches – Brittas Bay-over the weekend, leaving the local community disgusted.

Brittas Bay Beach Care shared a shocking video of the beach which has been covered in empty beer bottles, cans, plastic bags an, wrappers.

The video has already accumulated over 2,000 views and people are truly horrified by the state the beach was left in.

One user said: “People are disgusting. Bring your rubbish home or to the nearest bin if the bin is full bring it home. This is just shameful.”

“Lazy, dirty people,” another added.

The team had no choice but to organise a Beach Sweep, which will run from 7 pm to 8 pm this evening. They’re seeking the public’s help in tidying up the beach and one generous citizen has already kicked off the cleaning spree.

The Brittas Bay Beach Care team explained: “We just popped down to see how our beach is doing this morning at 9.30am, to find a beach visitor cleaning up the sand at the South Beach entrance. They had seen the news stories about beachgoers littering and wanted to do their bit, so bought some bags down!”

“They said they wanted their children to see this is unacceptable behaviour,” they added.

The team shared a vital message that everyone needs to remember when heading along to the beach during the heatwave: Leave only your footprints.

Like many an Irish man, Kian Egan is looking forward to the long evenings.

"Last year I went out surfing and I was still in the water at five to twelve. It's just incredible."

The former Westlife singer and dad-of-three has always loved the beaches, and in particular the coastline of his native Sligo.

"We have amazing beaches in Ireland. I remember when I first started travelling around the world, you’d go to different parts of the world and think this isn’t that great really, is it? as an Irish person we have an amazing coastline."

As an avid surfer, Kian is not bluffing about his connection to the sea, and to show it he's teamed up with Coca-Cola Clean Coasts Week. Running from the 1st to the 10th of June, the week encourages communities around the coast of Ireland to "Do good, Feel good" by volunteering to keep our beautiful beaches litter-free.

For Kian, getting involved with Clean Coasts was a no-brainer.

"It’s a natural fit. I’ve noticed over the years that people do get a bit 'lacksidaisy' when it comes to leaving stuff on the beach and not even know what they’re doing, it’s not conscious.

"It’s a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness for someone like myself who loves the beach so much. I’m very environmentalist anyways."

Keeping local beaches clean is something that Kian does all year around.

"When I’m walking along the beach I always try to bring back a few pieces of rubbish. I think that’s such a simple thing to do, it’s a feel good task. I think if we try to spread messages like that around the country then we’ll be doing very well."

It's something that he gets the kids involved in too.

"Whenever I bring them to the beach I always say 'right lads, go find me three pieces of rubbish'. When the tide comes in it picks up that rubbish and it gets brought out to the sea again and that’s where the problem arises in the sea as well."

Kian, whose boys are aged six, three and eight months, sees the beach as a "natural playground".

"My kids have more fun in the beach than they do in the actual playground. You’d find yourself when you go to the beach, feeling happier naturally. I don’ know why it does it, it could be the sea air, the calming of the water.

"In general if people are in bad form and they go for a walk on the beach it cheers them up."

He's been spending a lot more time at the beach recently, since the birth of his third son he's actively stepping away from the limelight.

"I feel like being at home with my children is now important right now. To help them and to raise them especially in the first few years. I love the idea of being around them, cooking their meals and make sure they’re not eating junk too much.

“I feel very privileged to do that. I am very privileged to be about to do that. I know dads that would give so much to be able to do what I do. I want to keep it going for as long as we can."

Married to British singer Jodi Albert, he jokingly calls his three boys "little terrors".

"Having the three boys together is a good thing, cause they’re going to such a little unit. I have an older brother whose the same age gap as my older two and I looked up to him so much.

As for the possibility of one of his sons following in his footsteps, he "wouldn't be completely against it" but he has "a lot of opinions about it".

Completely happy with his dad-at-home dad life, Kian has no current plans to get back in the limelight. As for a Westlife reunion?

"There’s no doubt that there will be one at some stage in the future, but when is the real question. Not for a long time I don’t think."

Excuse us while we go cry in the bathroom.

Coca-Cola Clean Coasts Week runs from the 1st to the 10th June.

Further details are emerging following the tragic death of two people on a beach 20 miles south of Lisbon yesterday.

It is understood that the plane, which was forced to make an emergency landing on the Portuguese beach, was carrying two occupants when it got into difficult at the beach in Caparica.

Reports have established that panicked sunbathers fled the beach in panic when the light aircraft descended and skidded across the land in a tragic incident which claimed the lives of a 56-year-old man and 8-year-old girl.

According to the National Maritime Authority, both individuals died at the scene of the incident.

Local reports on Portuguese television have confirmed that the two occupants, one of whom is believed to be a flying instructor and the other a pupil, were taken by police from the scene.

Speaking to local reporters, the deceased child's father attempted to give a description of the incident.

"We were on the beach at low tide where the water drains from the lake, he said. "I was with my brother-in-law trying to explain to my two daughters and my nephews what a rip-tide is and how it forms."

"One of my nephews pointed out the plane which was flying low by the sea wall. I told Sofia, who died, to run behind me, and she ran as fast as she could."

'When I saw the other children were safe and when I looked round to help Sofia, I saw her being hit," he continued.

"I went up to the man who was piloting the plane and he told me he had lost control of the aircraft. I could have punched him, I had that right, but I didn't do it.'

The cause of the emergency landing remains unclear.

It is the chance accident that will strike fear into the heart of every owner of a dog: incredibly, a Chihuahua puppy was swallowed up into quicksand while out on an otherwise mundane walk.

Owner Paul Scott was walking his three-month old pet, Dave, along the beach with his girlfriend, Kyla Holmes, when the terrifying incident took place.

He spotted the beloved animal disappear into the sand on the popular Seaton Sluice Beach in Northumberland – prompting a race-against-the-clock rescue.

He and his girlfriend were thankfully able to haul the completely submerged puppy out to safety, with Kyla then later filming Paul using a dog ball launcher to probe the pit.

The footage shows Mr Scott plunge the toy and his entire arm into the sand – as Dave the pup plays happily nearby. It is believed that the sand was at least 1.5metres deep.

The 51-year-old, who lives in Seaton Delaval, described their ordeal: “We were just walking along the beach then out of nowhere he disappeared.

“He is only little but luckily I had seen what happened and was able to fish him out. Who knows what could have happened.

“The quicksand is really dangerous and I am very concerned there is going to be a serious accident.”

Paul, a regional sales manager, explained that Dave “went underneath the sand completely and disappeared. If Kyla had not seen him go under we would not have known where he was.

“He made no sound and he was just gone. He would have just disappeared without a trace.

“Kyla rushed over and stuck her arm in and pulled him out. He had been completely submerged but he was fine. It was very lucky.”

Mr Scott added: “It is concerning because what happens if it is another dog or a young child next time. People need to be aware.”

He later contacted the Maritime And Coastguard Agency, who carried out an investigation into the incident.

Adam Turner, senior coastal operations officer for the UK Coastguard, said: “Our advice is always the same if you become stuck in mud or quicksand – stay calm, try and spread your weight as much as possible and avoid moving. Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

“Anybody trapped should also discourage other well-meaning members of the public from attempting to rescue them because without the proper equipment they could become stuck too.”

Finally, Paul revealed that Dave has at least fully recovered from his ordeal. "He was fine," he said. "He just shook it off and went on his way. I think we were more shocked by it than him."

When Vogue Williams goes on her holliers she probably doesn't have to worry too much about what she's going to look like on the beach.

That's because when you're Vogue Williams your bod is pretty perfectly suited to things like lying on a sun-lounger, frolicking in sea water, or leaning against a wooden fence with a backdrop of red flowers and lush foliage behind you (see below).

At the moment, the 30-year-old model and TV presenter is in Spain spending time with family who live there (including her totally adorable niece, Jeanie).

And she's making the most of the Mediterranean clime too – whipping out a few gems from her undoubtedly vast swimwear collection.

In fact, we reckon that in the last three days, Dublin-native Vogue has proven absolutely three times over that she is the queen of all beach babes. Long may she reign!

Although if you're currently looking out at grey skies wondering if it's unreasonable to stick on a hoodie (hey, there's definitely a June chill in the air), you might want to look away right around now…

Dressed in a red bikini and cradling her bump, Anne Hathaway looked like any other expectant mum as she posed for a smiling holiday snap this morning.

The one difference? She had a gaggle of paparazzi on her tail as she did so.

News of Anne's pregnancy was confirmed back in November, but today the actress acknowledged it publicly for the first time, after noticing a few long-lens cameras following her.

"So, posting a bikini pic is a little out of character for me, but just now while I was at the beach I noticed I was being photographed," the Les Miserables star wrote on her personal Instagram account.

"I figure if this kind of photo is going to be out in the world it should at least be an image that makes me happy (and be one that was taken with my consent. And with a filter :)"

We couldn't agree more – and there's no denying Anne looks downright amazing as she approaches her due date.

This will be the first child for the actress and her husband of three years Adam Shulman. Although it's not officially known when Anne is due, it's thought she's already at least six or seven months along.

Here's hoping she outsmarts the paps by sharing the first snap of her new arrival on social media too.
