Yearly Archives: 2019

She is back and looking as stunning as ever.

Selena Gomez has returned to social media after a four-month hiatus.

The 26-year-old took to Instagram to pen an emotional post to her fans.

She uploaded three black-and-white photos of herself as she spoke about how she overcame the last year.

She captioned it, ''It’s been awhile since you have heard from me, but I wanted to wish everyone a happy new year and to thank you for your love and support. Last year was definitely a year of self-reflection, challenges, and growth.''

She continued, ''It’s always those challenges which show you who you are and what you are capable of overcoming. Trust me, it’s not easy, but I am proud of the person I am becoming and look forward to the year ahead. Love you all.''

144 million followers obviously happy to have her back

One said, ''Real beauty'' followed by love heart emojis.

While another wrote, ''My Queen back. We LOVE you, Selena. You're a strong woman.''

A third added, ''I'm soo proud of u and so happy that you are healthy and back. I hope I see you on stage soon. I'm so glad that you know Who u are, and that you're happy with yourself. We all grow and learn. Love you soo much.''

She last posted in September when she said that she was taking a break, partly due to the negative comments she had experienced.

She wrote, ''Taking a social media break. Again. As much as I am grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us, I am equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment I have been given. Kindness and encouragement only for a bit! Just remember- negative comments can hurt anybody’s feelings. Obvi.''

It was then reported that she had been admitted to a mental health facility after being hospitalised for an “emotional breakdown”.

She seems to be getting back to her old self and we are delighted for her – onwards and upwards Selena.

If you've spent much of your life desperately trying to make your hair seem thicker, longer or more volumised, then you'll know that this mission is an ongoing one.

Having hair that resembles blonde dust or a barnet that breaks at the hint of heat is not for the faint-hearted.

It takes grit and determination to power through your mane mishaps especially when the rest of your crew are boasting barrel curls and rocking real-life ringlets.

If you have hair which REFUSES to grow or are, shall we say, a little sparse on top then you'll know ALL about the following struggles.

1. The bun bother

What looks like an effortlessly sexy way to keep your hair off your face makes YOU look like Miss. Trunchbull from Matilda.

"It's like a Malteaser on top of a beach ball, girls."

2. The grease glitch

When your hair is particularly fine even at its best, a little grease or light rain can actually make you look like you have a comb-over.

"I swear I could count the strands right now."

3. The straightening situation

You KNOW you're not doing yourself any favours, and yet you still insist on burning that crispy hair of yours to an actual cinder with the straightener.

"I can't help it. It's force of habit!"

4. The kissing conundrum

In the throes of passion, your significant other may have attempted to run his hand through your hair…only to find out you pretty much don't have any.

"Only do that after a salon blowdry! I've told you before!"

5. The parental pity

Like any Irish mammy, yours is just FULL of reassuring words and woe betide anyone who disagrees with her.

"You've fine hair, but LOTS OF IT, dya hear me?"

6. The fringe fuss

When you've got fine hair (but lots of it) you need to keep round-the-clock surveillance on your fringe.

"I swear, if I don't comb it every 20 minutes it starts looking like a barcode."

7. The patience problem

There's a special place in hell for people who tell you that your hair would just grow 'if only you left it alone'.

"You make me sick."

8. The hair hope

Every so often you'll land upon a product that SPEAKS to you, only to have your hopes dashed after the first application.

"Fooled again, girls. Fooled again."

9. The endless envy

Other girls covet each others bums, tums and boobs, and there you are salivating over every wave in that random stranger's hair.

"Honestly, I nearly reached out and touched it."

10. The nonstop negotiations

If you have to have one more argument with your hairdresser about the amount she's allowed to take off, you'll be forced to call the police on her.

"It's like she's robbing me blind every time I see her."

Kim and Kanye are expecting their fourth child via surrogate. Last January, the parents welcomed their daughter Chicago via surrogate after Kim had two complicated births with her eldest children North and Saint.

We’re sure the reality star is beyond excited about welcoming another baby boy into her family. Kim and Kanye are already parents to five-year-old North, three-year-old Saint and one-year-old Chicago.

Back in 2007, actor pals Benedict Cumberbatch (AKA Bumblesnuff Crimpysnitch) and Tom Hardy hadn't yet hit the big time.

When PopSugar found an old video from over a decade ago of their pair giving an interview, thank God they didn't keep it to themselves. It's gold.

The clip premeditates their media training, marriages and dapper outfits, and the pair are visibly nervous having a natter in a pub garden of all places.

Before we saw the video, we had major lust for Tom Hardy, but now it's reached dizzying new heights.

The awkwardness of Benedict is also more pure than our souls will ever be; the duo crack jokes with each other throughout the interview, which was to promote their DVD, Stuart: A Life Backwards.

They make an effort to try and explain the plotline of the flick, but pretty much fail, all in the cutest way possible of course.

Despite their apparent comfort with each other, Stuart: A Life Backwards was genuinely their first acting project together.

The acting pair didn't work together again for four years, until the remake of Tinker,Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Thank God that project had a bigger budget, is all we can say…

Age has been kind for Hardy and Cumberbatch, we desperately hope 2019 will be the year for their third collaboration. We want on-screen MAGIC, mmkay?

Margot Robbie has broken her silence on the reoccurrig societal expectation that so many women face on a daily basis – presuming that once they are married, having a baby will naturally follow.

The wedding band is barely on women's fingers (if even) and people think it's acceptable to pry into their private live and fertility.

The 28-year-old addressed the problem when she was speaking to Radio Times, and admitted that she was fed up with the presumptions.

She drew parallels with her character Queen Elizabeth I in her new movie, Mary Queen of Scots , when she said, “It made me really angry; how dare some old guy to dictate what I can and can’t do when it comes to motherhood or my own body?''

She added, ''Unfortunately, it’s a conversation we’re still having.”

Margot wed filmmaker Tom Ackerley in 2016, and since then, the question of motherhood has been on many interviewers lips.

She said, ''I’m so angry that there’s this social contract. You’re married, now have a baby. Don’t presume. I’ll do what I’m going to do.“

She also went on to express her frustration at the lack of strong female roles, which resulted in her setting up her own production company, LuckyChap Entertainment.

She said, ''I wasn't seeing many scripts where I wanted to play the female role – I always wanted to play the male role.''

She continued, ''The female roles are always a catalyst for the male story, and that’s unsatisfying. So I was like ‘Well, we’ll start making our own films because we can’t just sit around forever and wait for them to come along’.”

There has been uproar following last night’s results when both Lady Gaga and Glenn Close, and Amy Adams and Patricia Arquette were tied in their respective categories.

It’s a rare occurrence and one that many stars would be extremely bothered by. Back in 1969, Bette Davis even said: “If someone gave me half an Oscar, I’d throw it back in their face.”

SHEmazing writers Kat O'Connor and Kate Brayden go head-to-head to discuss whether tying for awards is a good or bad outcome, and it gets HEATED, let us tell you.

Just The Two of Us by Kat O' Connor

I understand that giving the award to both Amy and Patricia, and Gaga and Glenn is controversial, but the sight of both duos on stage outweighs the controversy.

For me, the moment when Amy and Patricia embraced on stage and when Glenn cheered for Gaga’s triumph symbolises the sisterhood we have developed and strengthened in recent years.

The tie acknowledged the incredibly moving, outstanding and remarkable work of four talented women in Hollywood.

It wasn’t about who wore the most on-trend lipstick or whose gown was the most eye-catching.

That moment was about female friendship, celebrating one another’s achievements and showing the world that the days of cat-fights and backstage bitchiness are no more.

Amy and Patricia tying for best actress doesn’t take away from their stellar performances in Sharp Objects and Escape at Dannemora.

And the same goes for Gaga’s role in A Star Is Born and Glenn’s in The Wife.

I’ll leave you with the wise words of winner Amy Adams: “I actually can't think of a more beautiful thing than a tie because there really isn't a winner when we get to do such great work and we have such wonderful opportunities.”

Why Tying For Awards Is Entirely Pointless, by Kate Brayden

While I concur with the idea of supporting other women and acknowledging as much talent in female entertainment categories as possible, does giving two women out of seven in one category awards not dilute the entire notion of a winner in the first place? In that case, why don't each of the nominees get a trophy?

Giving two seems pointless, and also must have been frustrating for the five 'losers', so to speak. Other nominees in this category were the outstanding Olivia Colman, Emily Blunt, Toni Collette, Melissa McCarthy and Yalitza Aparicio, who each gave incredible performances in their own right.

So why give the same award to two women? Arguably, the statement says neither woman stood out enough to get the gong. Sharing ain't always caring, sorry kids.

jonah hill stop sharing GIF by Saturday Night Live

They were both above average, but didn't deserve the trophy. Yet because we have to celebrate women from these categories, we'll just hand both of them a statuette and everyone will be happy.

Each of the seven women are amazing in their own right, but it doesn't reflect the reality of the entertainment industry to divide up the awards. Women are still competing in Hollywood for a tiny number of well-rounded roles and positions working behind the camera, so what's the point in pretending that 2019 is all about equality?

The point of an awards ceremony is to watch the competition, to see the reactions, the wins, the losses, the fashion, the tears, the joy; if the competition is diluted, arguably there's less entertainment factor. Don't get me wrong, I love gal bonding as much as the next feminist, but women are still allowed to compete against each other for the sake of art.

joey doesnt share food GIF

All in all, both perspectives have valid points; lifting other women rather than pitting them against each other is something to cherish in today's harsh, still-patriarchal society which has a narrow idea of what a woman represents.

On the other hand, why not just give every woman in that category an award then, heck why not give US an award too while you're at it?

Will we just say we both won the debate? A trophy each? Sounds about right..

Iconic Brit actor Hugh Grant is desperately appealing to burglars who broke into his car to return the stolen movie script, in a bizarre set of events.

The 58-year-old is devastated, having lost weeks of notes and intense work on his next project.

The Hollywood actor wrote:

"In the unlikely chance that anyone knows who broke into my car tonight and stole my bag, please try and persuade them to at least return my script. ‘Many weeks worth of notes and ideas."

"And perhaps my children’s medical cards. Coach Films, Ealing St Mary’s Ealing Green W5 5EN," he concluded.

Now first of all, we ain't here to promote keyboard warriors or viciously cruel groups online who tear people down for the craic. No, that's not our style.

However, the art of trolling must be respected at all costs, especially from a nation as sarcastic and exceptional at 'slagging' such as Ireland.

From Waterford Whisperers embodying the Ultimate Irish Trolling Association, to the current troll of the day; the egg that stole Kylie Jenner's record for most likes on an Instagram photos, here's a round-up of our favourite savage moments in pop culture.

Ready yourself for wigs being hilariously snatched and thrown into the wind, it's a bumpy ride of burns and teasing gone too far.

1. Waterford Whisperers trolling Westlife's new song, Hello My Love:

The vast majority of people were ECSTATIC when Westlife announced their comeback; their Twenty Tour sold 400,000 tickets in under 48 hours for God's sake.

Not everyone was over the moon about Ireland's premier boyband reuniting however, with Waterford Whisperers delivering a vicious burn that has us in stitches.

"Helplines are now fielding calls from thousands of stricken people after the release of the first new Westlife single in over eight years," the article states.

"Penned by Ed Sheeran for maximum disruption, the track caused nausea, hysterics and uncontrollable weeping for one in every seven listeners, and emergency call centres have stated that they are receiving one call every nine seconds which consists solely of someone screaming “fuuuuuuuuuck”."

As savage as it is towards the national heroes we call Westlife, we were laughing for a solid twenty minutes at this one.

2. Lovinkiara's artistic flare

If you haven't seen last year's Twitter thread that featured @lovinkiara taking drawing requests, and delivering some…interest…results, you've missed out.

She became somewhat of a hero among trolls after uploaded a tweet that supposedly depicted her talanted artistic capabilities:

The cartoon styles seem pretty legit, in all fairness. What came next had the internet shooketh, the woman isn't exactly Leo DaVinci:

They just get more and more amusing the longer you stare at them:

At this stage we were in tears:

Okay, we had to stop reading the tweets after this one because our vision blurred at how utterly terrible the cartoons are:

Iconic trolling Kiara, carry on dear daughter of the troll.

3. Justin Bieber heads to…North Korea?!

A website asked its users to choose the next country which Justin Bieber would visit on his My World tour, and the answer wasn't exactly conventional. Let's just say he wasn't rushing to grab his passport anytime soon…

Yup, the Biebs himself (babyface Biebs at that stage in his career… and arguably in his current stage too…) was instructed to visit NORTH KOREA.

What's even more amusing/horrifying, North Korea received an insane 659,448 votes. Dear God, that's the size of a country. It's more than the population of Iceland, let that sink in…

4. M Night School Hoax

M. Night Shyamalan is a relatively renowned film director, known for creating iconic scary movies such as The Sixth Sense, The Happening, Split, The Last Airbender, Signs and The Village.

While many claim that his films are hit-and-miss, with some achieving critical acclaim and box office success, others have royally bombed. Someone eventually took it upon themselves to crowdfund to send him back to film school.

Named The M. Night School, the creator worked out that if 150,000 people donated one dollar each, they could donate enough cash for the director to be put through film school once again at NYU.

The ruthless trolling of the director rages on today… who knows if he's become immune to it at this stage or if he cries himself to sleep every M. Night?

5. Ed Sheeran's head of security

@SecurityKev became a smash hit star as Ed Sheeran's GAS head of security, and who even got the catchphrase; "Always. Watching" for his consistent background lurking.

It's iconic, he even calls Ed 'bae', throwing in a 'Who's the Daddy' at the most random of moments. His internet fame has earned him a huge 963,000 Instagram followers who watch his every move, ironically;

"When bae takes you shopping #burberry", he captioned this next one. He only went and won Instagram, didn't he?

Her shallow personality has us hooked, we're full-blown addicts at this stage. God knows how or why. We don't question it.

When we think of beauty essentials with expiry dates, items like fresh face masks and mascara.

Horrifyingly, your hair straighteners can be out of date – and some may stop functioning correctly after just two or three years.

So that trusty hair straightener you got for Christmas while you were in TY might be doing more harm to your hair thanks to its age.

According to Pierre Haddad hair stylist Jackie Dove, the heated tools can cause hair breakage and strip away hair's natural oils if used past their sell-by date.

Speaking to the Mail Online, Jack revealed the warning signs that dictate when it's time to let go of your precious hair iron.

Whether you use it to straighten or do plate curls, listen up:

Lifting plates:

Jackie warns that the plates of older hair appliances can become lose over time.

'If you turn your hair straightener to the side you can generally see the plate lifting,' Jackie explained to Femail.

'If they've lifted, your hair is likely to get caught in it.' Ouch.

Flashing Lights:

The light on your straightener should only flash when it's heating up, or at your desired temperature.

If you start to notice random flashes while the straightener is on, or the light flashing when it should be constant, it could be a sign that the temperature regulators are not working correctly anymore.

Same sections:

If you have to keep running the plates over the same sections of hair over and over, then its s ign your straightener needs replacing.

Heated tool's essential duty is to style hair in a quick manner, and if it no longer serves this core purpose, it's time for a replacement.
