Yearly Archives: 2018

As of July 1, changes to the General Medical Card Scheme in Ireland meant that the morning after pill became available in pharmacies for women with a medical card, without a prescription.

Considering this change, ellaOne, an emergency contraceptive pill that is available from pharmacies without a prescription, has sought to clarify any confusion which still surrounds emergency contraception.

So, without further ado, here are five things you should know about emergency contraception.

1. There is more than one type of emergency contraception available.

There are two forms of emergency contraception that can be used after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy. These are the morning after pill and the emergency IUD – also known as ‘the emergency coil’.

When it comes to the morning after pill – you have a choice of two different pills – containing either ulipristal acetate (ellaOne®) or levonorgestrel.

You should speak to a healthcare professional about the various treatments available and the differences in effectiveness to ensure you are informed about your options and can make a choice based on what is most suitable for you.

2. You don’t need a doctor’s appointment.

If you need emergency contraception you can head straight to the pharmacy to get the morning after pill after a quick consultation with the pharmacist – you don’t need to get a prescription from your doctor.

However, if you are more comfortable speaking to your GP, it is  possible to go down this route too.

3. It works by delaying ovulation.

The morning after pill does not cause an ‘emergency period’ or an abortion, it actually works by delaying egg release (ovulation).

This means that the sperm waiting in the fallopian tubes will be unable to meet an egg and fertilise it.

This is similar to regular contraceptive pills, which mostly work by preventing egg release. If you are already pregnant, emergency contraception will not interrupt your pregnancy.

4. Your fertility can come back very quickly after using the morning after pill.

Emergency contraception has no effect on future fertility.

It will not protect you from pregnancy if you have unprotected sex again several days after taking it.

If you want to have sex after using emergency contraception, use a barrier method of contraception until your next period.

5. You don’t have to take it the morning after.

Although oral emergency contraceptive pills must be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex, don’t panic if you haven’t been able to get it immediately.

ellaOne (ulipristal acetate) can be taken within five days (120 hours) of unprotected sex and levonorgestrel containing emergency contraceptive pills can be taken within 3 days (72 hours) of unprotected sex.

Both pills work by preventing or delaying ovulation and must therefore be taken as soon as possible as they are not effective if ovulation has already taken place.

The emergency IUD can be inserted up to five days after unprotected sex or up to five days after the earliest time you could have ovulated.

If you're a serial voucher giver or have a collection of them – listen up.

The Government has given the nod for new legislation which will require all gift vouchers to have an expiry date of at least five years.

The Consumer Protection (Gift Vouchers) Bill 2018 is expected to be passed early next year.

Addressing the matter, TD Heather Humphreys said: "Every year consumers lose out because their gift vouchers go out of date."

"Part of the problem is the great variation on expiry dates which can range from as little as six months to 12 months to 24 months."

"This often leads to confusion amongst consumers. By having a set five-year expiry date on all gift vouchers, we will provide certainty to everyone involved," added the Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation.

The Bill will also include two conditions, the first means you and I will no longer have to spend that voucher all in one go.

And the second will tackle the cancellation of the gift card if the receivers name is spelt incorrectly, and a charge to amend the name will also be abolished.

Commenting on the provisions, the Minister said: "It’s wrong that consumers should have to spend a voucher in full in one transaction."

"Similarly, it isn’t fair that businesses can penalise consumers simply because of a wrong letter in a name."

"I’m glad that these two issues were brought to my attention during the public consultation so that we can now address them as part of this Bill," she added.

The Bill received cross-party support.

We for one are delighted with the new measures.

If navigating through Instagram to find quality content wasn't hard enough – there's a brand new trend that will make it even tougher – and it has us baffled.

Introducing "sponcon” – which is a term used for Instagrammers FAKING sponsored ads to attracted big brands into giving them work.

They're attempting to take the leap from an average Instagram user to an influencer who is paid handsomely for their posts on the platform.

In order to achieve the influencer lifestyle, people are shelling out their own cash and pretending they've gotten the product or experience for free.

So brands get the advertisement but haven't spent a penny – confused? Yeah, us too.

However, there is a method to this kinda madness as several influencers claim that companies want to see promotional abilities and past campaign work – BEFORE they hand over the big bills.

Therefore, a lot of Instagrammers are living by the phrase: Fake it until you make it.

Brian Phanthao, a 19-year-old lifestyle influencer explained the trend to The Atlantic

“In the influencer world, it’s street cred,” said he said, “the more sponsors you have, the more credibility you have.”

The teen added that most people are following in the footsteps of Instagrammers they've grown up with – and they want a piece of that pie.

"It’s really common with kids in high school,” he added. “They’re very influenced by influencers.”

And it seems that Brian has a point, as a 15-year-old lifestyle influencer also told the publication that "people pretend to have brand deals to seem cool."

The teenager, Allie even confessed to faking a water sponsorship on her Insta and added: “It’s a thing, like, I got this for free while all you losers are paying.”

But the person who takes the biscuit when it comes to “sponcon" is a lady by the name of Taylor Evans.

She told The Atlantic that she faked an entire trip to Miami.

Covering up her holiday as a press trip, Taylor tailored her Insta feed to look as if she didn't fork out a fortune and everything was handed to her for free.

"I took a lot of pics at restaurants and posted ‘Thanks so much XYZ restaurant for the hospitality!’” she said.

“You say it in a way that people could interpret it as you having an established relationship with that brand…"

"The hope is that it’s perceived in a way that looks like there’s a reason you’re in a different city and state, not just enjoying a weekend vacation,” she added.

We aren't too sure what to make of the recent trend.

We have a feeling that the main people making the money out of this movement is the big brands.

But sure, if it floats people's boat to pretend – then they aren't harming anyone.

As for us – trying to distinguish between what is real and fake advertising has gotten a whole lot harder.

The Kardashian crew has signalled the end of their apps.

The change is coming in 2019 and you can kiss goodbye to all the extra Kardashian-Jenner goss.

Those who have subscribed to their $2.99 per month charge for the app – are about to save three dollars-ish every month.

On Kim Kardashian's website, she made a statement on behalf of herself and her sister Kourtney, Khloe, Kylie and Kendall.

It read: "We've had an incredible experience connecting with all of you through our apps these past few weeks but have made the difficult decision to no longer continue updating in 2019."

"Truly hope you've enjoyed this journey as much as we have, and we look forward to what's ahead," she added.

Subscribes of the app were able to see exclusive content from each of the sisters.

Kendall's segment was all about fashion and Kylie's contribution was, of course, about make-up.

Kim's content was around beauty, whilst Khloe was the in-house fitness guru and Kourtney's posts were all about health.

It doesn't come as a major surprise that the app has come to an end.

In August, the Kardashian ladies announced that their DASH clothing stores would be closing their doors.

The change-up in business comes as their empires expand and their demands draw them elsewhere.

In a statement released in late summer, Kim said: "We’ve loved running DASH, but in the last few years we’ve all grown so much individually."

"We’ve been busy running our own brands, as well as being moms and balancing work with our families."

"We know in our hearts that it’s time to move on," she ended.

We can't wait to see what's in store for these ladies for 2019.

Meghan and Harry’s wedding was one of the biggest events of the year with the momentous occasion reportedly costing an eye-watering £32 million.

The Royals certainly went all out for their big day, especially Meghan who spent an extortionate amount of money on her hair and makeup.

The Duchess of Sussex looked as classy as ever on her wedding day with a simple updo and natural makeup look. However, despite the understated look, the former Suits actress forked out a reported £10,000 on her hair and makeup.

It is believed Meghan’s hair and makeup team spent a mere 45 minutes on her wedding look.

Serge Normant was the man behind Meghan’s chic updo and Daniel Martin worked his makeup magic on Meghan for the big day.

Speaking of the special moment, Normant told Glamour that Meghan was extremely relaxed during the entire process.

“We talked together a little bit before, but we wanted something that would have an easy feel to it. [It] wasn't a huge process. We wanted it to be something that was right for the day and that felt right for her mostly."

The Duchess looked breathtakingly beautiful on her wedding day, stealing the hearts of the millions who tuned in to watch her and Prince Harry tie the knot at St. George’s Chapel on May 19.

However, we can’t quite believe just how much she spent on her hair and makeup alone.

We won’t feel half as guilty the next time we splurge on lipstick from Charlotte Tilbury.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has us wrapped around it's teen-horror finger; we LIVE and breathe witchcraft and drama.

Of course, the show-runner for the Netflix show, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, is also the creator of Riverdale, and both shows are based on the classic Archie comics.

How great would it be if the two magical shows aligned? We'd be 100% here for it, that's for sure.

According to Shipka, spicing up the lives of Greendale's inhabitants would be easy for Archie Andrews; “My idea, personally, is that I think we need to get one of the Riverdale characters over on our show,"

A mash-up would make absolutely perfect sense since Greendale is actually Riverdale's neighbouring town, and both series' were adapted by the same person.

Just imagine the interactions, Ambrose and Jughead would be moody yet sassy BFF's, Sabrina and Betty would probably braid each other's hair, and Salem would be taken good care of by Dark Betty.

Anything is possible lads.

Shipka spoke to Entertainment Tonight about her simple yet effective idea for a Riverdale crossover;

"I think Archie should just wander over to Greendale. Like, he goes on runs. He's athletic. He can run into Greendale one day….Right?"

"I honestly think that Archie hopping on over into our show would be awesome. My main pitch is always that… Forget the Gargoyle King! What is happening in the town over?," she continued.

What would Sabrina order at Pop's Diner?

Would Sabrina and Archie have a romance plot, similar to the comics?

There are just SO MANY exciting things that could happen, fingers crossed that this actually happens.

They're the teen romance films we are all (secretly) obsessed with.

Whether or not you admit to loving this genre, there's good news.

Netflix has confirmed there will be a sequel to the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before and we CAN'T WAIT.

If you haven't seen the first movie – GO and watch it.

But it's based off an award-winning novel written by Jenny Han and follows actress Lana Condor as a secondary student Lara Jean.

Instead of confronting the lads she likes, Lara writes love letters to the boys she's been eyeing up and hides them away in a teal box in her wardrobe.

Cue the little brat of a sister snooping in her room and sending the private confessions to the boys they're addressed to.

A whole lot of drama occurs which leads to an arrangement being made with a boy called Peter.

Peter and Lara agree to pretend to be each other's partners.

I am sure you can guess what happens from here, but the predictable plot still gets us every time.

The second instalment of the books is titled P.S. I Still Love You, which is already giving us feels.

WE CAN'T WAIT.

Since 1990 when the first Home Alone movie graced our screens and changed our lives forever, the nostalgia has been building.

We've waited SO LONG to see Macaulay Culkin give us more Home Alone magic, and now our wishes have been granted, courtesy of Google.

Yes, Google have somehow persuaded the former child star to recreate some of the film's classic scenes, and it's as special as you might imagine.

The actor tweeted the 'Hey Google' ad yesterday, and sent the internet into mayhem;

It seems that Peter and Kate McCallister's parenting skills haven't improved in 30 years, but we're sure that raising about 2930282 children in a beautiful twelve-level house can't be as simple as it appears.

I mean, we've all gone and holiday and forgotten something vital. We've never forgotten a child, but sure look. Each to their own.

“Have you ever wondered what Kevin McCallister is like as an adult?,” Macaulay tweeted, and from the looks of things, he's pretty much the exact same.

Google is essentially helping him out this time around, so he doesn't have to fend off any burglars all on his lonesome. There are a few differences for Kevin as an adult, for one, he actually has a need to shave this time.

He puts out his back while jumping on the bed, much like the rest of us. He's not a kid anymore, SOB.

Culkin has retrofitted his gaff to be a super smart home, so there's no ingenious traps needed. Google implies that when you have a voice-activated tech assistant, warding off thieves is pretty damn easy.

Have a look at Kevin McCallister in all his adult glory, we're busy exploding with wistful thoughts of the blissful 1990s:

Keep the change, ya filthy animals.

In a world of cheap, Chinese takeaways, it’s difficult to find a gourmet, authentic Asian restaurant.

But I was pleasantly surprised when I tried the tasty and diverse cuisines of Eatzen restaurant.

I’ve tried countless Thai, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and Malaysian restaurants over the years but many seem to be curated for the bland Irish tongue.

'Chicken balls', '3-in1s', and 'mild' are words that should never be seen on an authentic Asian eatery’s  menu.

So I was thrilled when I spotted Satay with peanut sauce, Randang curry, and Peking beef amidst other dishes offered.

I was nestled at a table beside a curved wall that created the ideal date night atmosphere.

With stunning touches like a wavy, dividing wall, chrome pillars, and couple cubbies (bordered booths for those seeking privacy), the background noise was perfectly balanced.

Voices buzzed to create a soft background noise while remaining quiet enough for an intimate conversation to be had over a delicious meal.

But the best part of my evening was, of course, the food.

For starters, I recommend the Zen Trinity, a combination of customers’ favourites – Thai vegetable rolls, Satay chicken skewers, and spare ribs.

The ribs were slow-cooked to perfection, slathered in homemade BBQ sauce, and melting off the bone.

As far as curry, they offer a Thai green, a Thai red, and a Malaysian Randang.

And while all three were delicious, I highly recommend the Randang. It’s unique spices blended together to make the tastiest curry I have ever had.

The chicken breast used was cut into thin slices and its tenderness added a soft balance to the crunchy veggies.
