Yearly Archives: 2018

It's safe to say Ed Sheeran had a pretty successful 2017.

The singer released yet another critically acclaimed album, appeared in the hit HBO series Game of Thrones, and even claimed the coveted Christmas number one with his single Perfect.

The 26-year-old is going from strength to strength and it doesn't look like he's going to slow down any time soon.

In July of last year, the flamed headed singer confirmed that he would be appearing as a special guest star in an upcoming episode of The Simpsons, and now the first teaser clip has finally been released.

Ed plays the role of Brendan, a brooding musician and Lisa Simpson's love interest.

In the clip, his character can been seen playing the piano while Lisa accompanies him on saxophone, though she doesn't seem too impressed with skills.

“You didn’t applaud?,” an offended Brendan asks Lisa.

The episode will reportedly tells the story of a love triangle between Brendan, Lisa and Nelson Muntz, as the boys compete for her affection.

“He keeps alternating [between], ‘You’re not that great, but you could be fantastic,’ and she keeps falling for him because of his talent”, Simpsons producer Al Jean previously explained.

The full episode is set to air on FOX on Sunday, January 7.

OK, let’s not beat about the bush here; today was a living hell.

From the weather we were greeted with this morning to the gnawing hunger we experienced as we were forced to adhere to standard meal times, there’s no doubt we’ve definitely had better days.

Oh, and let’s not forget the brain freeze we had when it came to our work password, the mental block we experienced during our first task and the mindf*ck we endured when we realised pre-lunchtime vino was no longer acceptable.

Adjusting to the daily grind in the aftermath of Christmas festivities is no easy feat, but there are some things you can do to make the rest of your month a little more bearable.

Take a look at these…

1. Today

Make budget-friendly plans for the weekend

Look, none of us are exactly flush right now, but that doesn’t mean you have to resign yourself to a month spent gnawing your nails on the couch.

Why not plan an event for the weekend which requires little to no spending?

Round up your mates for a hike, invite friends over for a boxset binge or – if you’re feeling particularly ambitious – schedule an exercise session with likeminded friends who see January as an opportunity to detox.

2. This week

Incorporate one brisk walk a day into your week

We appreciate that the last thing you would want to do after work is battle your way through a wet and windy evening, but believe us, getting some fresh air this week will stand to you.

Not only will it help clear your head after work each evening, but it will ensure a better night’s sleep and provide a little cardio if you have yet to return to or start a gym regime.

Never underestimate the power of fresh air, and do your level best to get as much of it as you can this week.

3. This month

Embrace the frugality of the month

OK so, living on a shoestring may be utterly unavoidable this month, but that doesn’t mean you have to totally rail against it.

Use this month’s forced frugality as a template for your financial plans for the year to come, and revel in the fact you can make €50 last an entire week.

Make a note of the areas you were simply unable to splash the cash this month and train yourself to do the same for the rest of the year… even when you do have it 'to spare'.

Remember the last time you were working out in public, and decided that the whole experience could be improved if only you could shed every stitch of clothing you had on?

Yes, us neither.

But it sounds like someone out there has had such a thought if the Hanson Fitness Nude Workout Session is anything to go by.

This New York gym is all about injecting a little excitement into your standard exercise sessions, and it involves ditching your clobber.

"Rihanna's favourite celebrity trainers Hanson Fitness are going to be running naked fitness sessions to celebrate the New Year," reads their Facebook page.

"These naked personal training sessions are all about creating a ‘new (‘nu-de’) you’, as guests burn the calories whilst nude."

Elaborating on the science behind the madness, they continue: "Working out without clothes provides a number of benefits to your exercise including skin breathing, the release of endorphins due to Vitamin D from sunlight and complete body awareness so you can see if you're cheating on your exercise routines."

The event page contains the standard information, with talk of long and short-term goals, but finishes with a disclaimer we've yet to see in an Irish gym – 'nude underwear can be worn if desired'.

Good to know, guys…. we think.

It looks like veganism and vegetarianism are about to be a lot more common than they already are.

With veganism topping the charts as the biggest upcoming food trend of 2018, it's no wonder that people are easing themselves into the healthy and cruelty-free lifestyle by trying their hand at vegetarianism and flexitarianism.

According to Just Eat, the demand for vegetarian options has risen by a 'ridiculous' 987pc.

With meatless Monday's and education on the source of our food products becoming increasingly popular, it's no wonder the demand has risen.

Demand for healthy choices also grew by 94pc in 2017, and gluten free options increased by 72pc, according to Hospitality Ireland.

'The results from this year are a good insight into the future consumer trends and while convenience will continue to be key for consumers next year and beyond, we know that they are increasingly looking for more diverse, healthy, gluten free and plant based Vegan options,' Just Eat Marketing Director, Edel Kinane told The Buzz.

33pc of all Just Eat Restaurant Partners now provide vegan and vegetarian options on their menus to make it all the easier to ditch meat for good.

'Already proven to be a major hit in 2017 with the increased availability and variety of vegetarian and vegan meal options in restaurants, diners are slowly embracing animal-free diets as a health-conscious effort,'said  International Taste Solution in their 2018 trend chart.

It's good news all round for those of planning to go vegan or veggie for 2018.

A 20-year-old woman, who decided to go topless at the Rhythm & Vines Festival in New Zealand this week, has found herself the subject of debate after she punched a man who groped her.

The incident, which was captured on film, saw Madeline Anello-Kitzmiller making her way through the crowds at the New Year's Eve festival when she was chased by a man who then appeared to grope her.

Madeline and her friend Kiri-Ann Hatfield immediately retaliated by following the man back to where he sat with a group of friends before hitting him repeatedly.

Worryingly, some members of the public who have viewed the footage placed blame at Madeline's door by suggesting her decision to go topless resulted in the altercation, with one YouTuber asking: "Wtf do you expect going topless to a drunken festival?"

Responding to that particular narrative, Madeline told The Daily Mail that her decision to go topless did not justify the man's actions.

"A human’s body is their own, and nobody has a right to touch you without your consent, regardless of what they’re wearing or the lack thereof," she argued.

“He grabbed my breast. I hit him. There was a lot of built up anger coming from harassment throughout the day. This happens everywhere, not just New Zealand," she added.

"I stand by my actions and hope that I’ve inspired women to feel comfortable in their bodies, no matter how they look, and to stick up for themselves when anybody says otherwise, or tries to deny you the right to protect your own body."

2017 served as a vital turning point in exposing the widespread nature of sexual harassment in society.

The movement had its own hashtag, #MeToo, the iconic two words that helped multitudes to speak out.

It seems that 2018 has already replaced #MeToo with a different, yet still so necessary, rallying cry: #TimesUp.

300 women in the entertainment industry banded together and wrote a letter of solidarity, which was published in the New York Times and Spanish language paper La Opinión.

Among those involved are Reese Witherspoon, America Ferrera and Shonda Rhimes.

Actress Amber Tamblyn described the open letter as a 'call to arms', letting society know that sexual harassment in the workplace will no longer be tolerated.

'To every woman employed in agriculture who has had to fend off unwanted sexual advances from her boss, every housekeeper who has tried to escape an assaultive guest, every janitor trapped nightly in a building with a predatory supervisor….we stand with you.'

'We support you,' the letter reads.

In the open letter, they also thanked the women of the Farm Worker's Union, who reached out to support them in the fight against sexual harassment.

It is a fight that has proven difficult and lengthy.

The piece cites the underrepresentation of women in positions of power for why sexual misconduct has been allowed to continue for such a very long time.

A post shared by America Ferrera (@americaferrera) on

'The struggle for women to break in, to rise up the ranks and to simply be heard and acknowledged in male-dominated workplaces must end; time’s up on this impenetrable monopoly,' they wrote.

The Time's Up initiative has its own website, with a 'Know Your Rights' section to help those who find themselves being sexually harassed in the workplace.

Of course, reporting sexual harassment is a legal process, and navigating the legal system can be costly. However, Time's Up are working to help those who are financially disadvantaged.

They have a GoFundMe, which has raised over $13 million (over €10.7 million) so far in order to 'provide subsidized legal support to women and men who have experienced sexual harassment, assault, or abuse in the workplace'.

It is so heartening and empowering to see these privileged women working to help their sisters.

We definitely agree with them: time's up.

Since Friends arrived on the scene in 1994, the world was hooked.

As one of the most quotable, memorable shows on television, with a running span of almost 10 years, it' not surprise that Netflix has just added the series to its streaming service.

The show catapulted David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow and Courteney Cox to fame, and now we can catch it whenever we see fit on Netflix.

A post shared by Friends (@friends) on

While Netflix claimed that Friends was the show they had always been asked to add to their line-up, the reaction to the news was lacklustre from fans.

Many complained that Friends is shown as a re-run so often on daytime TV that being able to catch it on Netflix wasn't really a big deal.

However, for those who have never purposefully sat down with the intention to watch the show, they now have them all lined up and ready to go in chronological order.

All of the episodes are currently available, so if you have some free time, there's a decade of TV ready and waiting.

Someone put on the popcorn.
