Legislation which would decriminalise all acts of domestic violence, excluding rape and serious bodily harm, is currently making its way through parliament in Russia.

Having already passed one reading in the lower house of the Russian parliament, the measure will likely become law if it is passed at a second reading on Wednesday.

The measure must go through a third reading in addition to a final reading in the upper house, however these particular readings are generally considered little more than formalities.

Commenting on the controversy stemming from the proposed legislation, Russian expert, Yulia Gorbunova of Human Rights Watch, appealed to lawmakers to consider the risks associated with passing the law.

"Passage of this law would be a huge step backward for Russia, where victims of domestic violence already face enormous obstacles to getting help or justice," she said.

"The domestic violence bill would reduce penalties for abusers and put victims’ lives at even greater risk," she added,

As it stands, domestic battery in Russia is punishable by two years imprisonment, but this is rarely enforced.

Should the controversial law be passed over the coming weeks, battering a spouse will only become punishable by either a fine of less than $500, a nominal 15 days of 'administrative arrest', or community service.

40 women in Russia die every day at the hands of their spouse which equates with a staggering 14,000 women every year.

Nobody likes talking or even thinking about cancer, especially when you feel fit and healthy.

But cervical cancer doesn't have any symptoms – and the only way to detect it is through regular smear tests.

Thankfully, however, it IS treatable – and with early detection it is curable.

Early detection being the key words.

And this is why it is SO important you attend all scheduled smear tests.

Through screening, doctors can pick up abnormalities at the pre-cancer stage, when it is easily treatable, and having your smear test is a quick, free and painless.

This week is European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week (22nd-28th January), and to coincide with it the Irish Family Planning Association (IFPA) and CervicalCheck have launched the Pearl of Wisdom campaign to highlight the vital importance of free regular cervical screening.

They are urging women aged 25-60 to check when their next smear is due, or to book their first test with a doctor or nurse registered with CervicalCheck.

And how can you do that?

Simply click on CervicalCheck.ie and you'll be able to check when you're next appointment is due or make sure you're registered for your first one.

“Each year in Ireland, around 300 women are diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer and over 90 women die from the disease," Dr. Gráinne Flannelly said when speaking at the Pearl of Wisdom campaign launch.

"The cervical screening provided by CervicalCheck, combined with the HPV vaccination programme, provides the opportunity to significantly reduce these rates.

"So this week, we are calling on all women aged 25 to 60 to check when their next smear test is due, or arrange their first test with a doctor or nurse registered with CervicalCheck if they have never done so."

Desperately trying to remember a password to a particular online account is fist-clenchingly annoying, so it's no real surprise that many of us opt for very simple passwords when creating our accounts.

Oh, and we also tend to use the same very simple passwords for multiple accounts 'cos we're super-smart like that.

And if anyone knows just how ridiculous many of us are when it comes to online security, it's SplashData who recently released their annual list of the 25 worst passwords.

For the sixth year in a row, 123456 took the top slot when it came to putting a user at risk of identity theft while password came in a close second.

Compiled by assessing more than five million passwords which were leaked last year, SplashData were able to identify the combinations of letters and numbers which can leave an individual vulnerable to hacking.

Reminding us that we need to do more than capitalise one letter to get the better of online hackers, Morgan Slain, CEO of SplashData offered a little advice which we should probably pay attention to.

"Making minor modifications to an easily guessable password does not make it secure, and hackers will take advantage of these tendencies,"

"Our hope is that by researching and putting out this list each year, people will realise how risky it is to use these common logins, and they will take steps to strengthen their passwords and use different passwords for different websites," he added.

And without further ado, here are the 25 worst passwords of the last 12 months.

Taking the top five slots, we have 123456password, 1234512345678, and football. These are followed by qwerty, 1234567890, 1234567, princess and 1234.

Coming in at number 11 we have login, welcomesolo, abc123 and admin. Slots 16 to 20 brought us 121212,  flower, passw0rd, dragon and Sunshine.

And the final five to make it in the top 25? Let's hear it for master, hottie, loveme, zaq1zaq1 and password1.

Yep, we definitely have some work to do on the ol' password front, ladies.

There's no doubt that hangovers get worse as you get older.

As a 19-year-old, a quick McDonald's breakfast the morning after a rager of a session was enough to sort you out before a nine-hour shift in a bustling department store.

As a 29-year-old, nothing short of a counselling session, three-hour shower and frantic texts to friends and family will help ease the pain brought on by a night on the tiles.

But while the older among us bemoan those who still manage to dodge hangovers, we do reserve a kernel of empathy for the moment they do experience their first real-life hangover.

Here are just 9 moments you'll recall from the day your first genuine hangover actually landed.

1. The all-encompassing sense of dread that descended upon you after opening your eyes.

Long gone are the days when your 'hangover' kicked off with a burst of giggles over your antics the night before.

"Why do I feel like I've burned down an orphanage? Turn on the news and check. I've an awful feeling about this."

2. The hammering in your head makes you question whether you actually sustained head injuries the night before.

That vague ache which would lift after a cup of tea has nothing on the splitting pain behind your eyes right now.

"I actually can't move my head. I can't. Call my mam. But tell her I was pushed head-first into a wall last night."

3. The desire to ensure you're still in possession of all your personal belongings is no longer a priority.

Who cares less about your purse and phone when you're spiralling into a hell of your own making?

"I don't know where it is. I don't care. I just need to be hospitalised."

4. The inclination to shower is non-existent, because you can't be sure you won't drown in your current condition.

Unless you're carried into the shower and placed beneath running water, you're staying in last night's top and a pair of back-to-front football shorts.

"I want a shower, but I need to stay there for three hours, and I need supervision. Can you provide that?"

5. The idea of getting a takeaway for breakfast has you heaving into a wastepaper basket by your bed.

The days when you could chomp on a Dominos at noon before tucking into a chipper later that evening are long gone now.

"My body is rejecting itself, and I don't know what to do. Somebody needs to take this seriously, I'm frightened."

6. You scavenge for random items around your room that you think will help ease the pain.

A wet sock for your forehead? Check. Resting your face against the cold wall? Done. Rubbing the soft cord of your dressing gown against your cheek? Yes, yes, and yes.

"Leave me alone with my sock. But check on me in ten in case I'm dead."

7. You spend the entire day texting with one eye open (providing you have your phone, that is.)

The texts of yesteryear would be chock-full of last night's gossip, but on the morning of your first real hangover, issues get real.

"Do you hate me? Is there something you need to tell me? Why is Sinead taking so long to write back? Can you call an ambulance for me? Is this a hangover?"

8. Standing up straight and focussing on anything is beyond the realms of possibility.

Stumbling around your house in the form of Quasimodo is a sign nothing will ever be the same again.

"I honestly can't look up at you without feeling the need to projectile vomit. Please don't force me to do something we both might regret."

9. You swear on everything dear to you (between violent heaving) that you will never, ever put yourself in this position again.

You finally understand the sentiment behind those Facebook statuses insisting a dry month was on the horizon.

"Forget a dry month. I'm done. It was good while it *gag* lasted. But *gag* never again…."

As the so-called Citizens Assembly continues to debate the rights of women, one particular drive is gathering considerable pace.

#Strike4Repeal is taking place on March 8 – International Women's Day – and everyone is encouraged to get involved.

With video in support of the movement being released this morning, people in Ireland are being asked to strike in support of the many women who have to take time off work in order to travel abroad to access abortion services

"We have one demand to the Government," the video, which features seven different women, states, "call a referendum before the 8th of March – or there will be a national strike."

It adds: "We are asking you to show your solidarity… if a referendum is not called, strike."

It furthermore calls for women to refuse to complete domestic work, and to wear black.

"We won't wait," it concludes.

The official #Strike4Repeal Facebook page explains: "This strike is based on non-traditional strike actions for human rights that we have witnessed in other parts of the world.

"In October of last year, thousands of people in more than 60 cities in Poland went on strike to protect their access to abortion, and won."

The strike will not be an industrial strike in the traditional sense, with the movement stating that "we encourage participants to be imaginative in how they approach the the action".

"If you can strike, do," it adds. "If it’s possible, book a day off work in advance.

"Stage an event at 12 noon or on your lunch break to remember the 12 women who have been forced to travel for abortion that day, and every day.

"If you are a business owner, consider giving a day off to your employees or completely closing the business on that day, with no cost to your staff."

It concludes: "We encourage everyone to come up with their own ideas for participation on the day.

"Every person who has an abortion has to take at least a day, whether to travel or stay at home. Use this day to stand in solidarity with them, and demand change."

You can find out more about #Strike4Repeal on the related Facebook and Twitter pages – and make sure to watch the video below:

So, we're going to be honest here.

Given our various clean-eating resolutions for the year ahead, the only appliance we envisioned ourselves buying over the next 12 months was a blender to nuke anything and everything green and leafy.

And just 23 days into the New Year, we can safely say that that dream has now died after laying eyes on the Bacon Express Crispy Bacon Grill.

Brought to us by Nostalgia Electronics, this vertical grill allows us to cook six pieces of bacon at a time while its design forces the drainage of fat. (Clean eating, check.)

The good folk behind the wonder gadget speak to our inner hungover selves when they assure us that the "unique patent pending easy-clean doors make flat, crispy bacon that doesn't shrivel."

So if crispy bacon is your only lad after a night on the gin, you can get your hands on this gizmo for €39.99.

Just when you think the Internet cannot possibly get any weirder, we are faced with CHEESE NAILS.

チーーズ‼️

A video posted by テイストメイドジャパン (@tastemade_japan) on

We love cheese (more than we care to admit) and we love getting our nails done… but frankly we don't see the need to combine the two.

However, like it or not, cheese nails are here, and people seem to really love them.

Simply search #cheesenails on Instagram, and you will be faced with hundreds of people who are rocking cheesy nails.

The trend was popularised by Tastemade Japan, who shared a video on how to achieve cheese nails.

The video in question has been viewed over 364,000 times since it was uploaded last year, which is pretty darn impressive.

Despite the clear popularity of these nails, we will be keeping cheese on pizza… where it belongs.

Millions of people around the world – including some 5,000 in Dublin – took to the streets over the weekend to march in protest.

Their grievance? The inauguration of Donald Trump as 45th president of the United States.

Brandishing placards, banners, and signage, they made their voices heard loud and clear.

And while there were numerous standout moments from the global movement (it took place on Saturday) one particularly adorable toddler is proving to be quite the little head-turner.

Aged just 22 months her mother, Jenny Sowry, snapped her aloft upon her father's shoulders at the North Carolina march.

The child, wrapped up warm against the city of Charlotte chill, can be seen in the image holding proudly above her head her very own contribution: a colourful collection of swiggles and lines set against a piece of brown cardboard.

Jenny shared the picture on Facebook using the inspiring hashtags: #inherownwords #shespeaksforherself.

She was in attendance alongside her husband, Sam, and their two children – a nine-year-old son as well as the little girl in the photo.

The toddler has already been turned into a meme (naturally), while numerous people have been taking to Twitter using the hashtag #wokebaby to share their joy at the sight of the small one.

“The word that keeps coming back to me is ‘hope,’” Ms Sowry told Buzzfeed.com in the aftermath. “It makes people hopeful that there is already a little one who is already speaking her mind.”
