Yearly Archives: 2019

It's almost that time of the year again.

Ok, so it's massively cheesy but you'd be lying if you said that you didn't look forward to a night where the whole country joins together to cheer our little island on as they compete in a parade of ridiculousness.

Now RTE has unveiled the tune to which we will be pinning our hopes to as it represents Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019.

It's titled 22, was penned by Janieck, Marcia “Misha” Sondeijker and Roulsen and will be sang by Sarah McTernan.

Sarah is delighted to be taking to the stage for Ireland.

She said, ''It’s like an early birthday present! My 25th birthday is next Monday and if you’d told me last year that I’d be chosen to represent my country at Eurovision, performing the song for the first time on Dancing with the Stars this Sunday, and then flying to Tel Aviv on my birthday to record a postcard, I would have told you – you were crazy!”

She continued, ''My Mom, Nana, family and friends are super excited for me – they’re shocked and very proud. I can’t wait to teach my biggest fan – my 2 ½ year old daughter Mia- all the lyrics to “22”!”

The song will be played on radio for the first time at 9am on Friday morning on The Ryan Tubridy Show on RTÉ Radio 1.

She will aso be interviewed on The Nicky Byrne Show with Jenny Greene on 2FM at 12:30pm on Friday, and by Ray D’Arcy on RTÉ Radio 1 at 3pm.

If that wasn't enough, Dancing with the Stars is having a special Eurovision Song Contest themed programme this Sunday and Sarah will be performing the song live for the first time, to give us all an idea of what it will be like at the real thing in Tel Aviv.

The Eurovision Semi Final in Tel Aviv takes place on Thursday May 16, with the grand final taking place on Saturday May 18.

We are seriously excited – come on Ireland.

Don't put your parkas away just yet – Met Eireann has predicted another snowy weekend for Ireland.

If you were hoping to get the legs out for a night on the town, you may want to pack some tights, as temperatures are due to reach zero on Saturday.

Showers are expected over parts of Ulster, but some sunny spells are also forecasted.

'It will clear this afternoon and evening with scattered showers following,' say Met Eireann.

'Highest temperatures of 8C to 12C with moderate to fresh southerly winds, later veering westerly and becoming strong in the northwest.'

'Saturday night will be cold and breezy with wintry showers, mainly of rain, hail and sleet, but turning increasingly to snow overnight, especially in Ulster and on high ground.'

Hot water bottles at the ready.

Breaking up is hard to do, and it can be easy to wonder what you could have done differently, or drag yourself over the hot coals of your memory cringing over each and every bad relationship moment.

OR you could do as Demi Lovato has done, and invest in a little self love and self care.

Days after news broke that she had split from boyfriend Henry Levy, the singer took to her Instagram story to share a snap of some flowers.

However, the sender was the singer herself.

The pink bouquet was accompanied by a quote, illustrated in a card with some stunning penmanship.

‘You're beautiful, you're loved and you're worthy of a happy and healthy life,’ it read.

Just days ago, Riverdale fans were left in shock following the announcement of the death of actor Luke Perry at the age of 52.

Luke suffered a stroke last week, which ultimately caused his death on Monday evening.

Camilla Mendes, who plays Veronica on the show, has taken to her social media to share her grief with fans.

Veronica as a character is known for her flowery language and unrealistic one-liners, but Camilla’s words were truly touching.

‘He took care of us all. An authentic man who took pleasure in offering us his guidance and wisdom, his presence was healing,’ she began.

‘He had the ability to make you feel comfortable and at ease within seconds of seeing him.’

‘I will never forget the collective shock and distress we experienced when the news broke on set.’

'We lost a dear friend. My heart hurts for his family and anybody who had the pleasure of knowing him,’ she continued.

‘Rest in peace, Luke. Although you’re no longer around to wrap me in the warmth of your hug, I can still remember what it felt like. Whenever I think of you, I will remember that feeling.’

Actress Lili Reinhart, who plays Betty on the show, had this to say:

'I’m finding it hard to grasp that he will no longer be around to give long hugs and share his wisdom and kindness with all of us,' she tweeted.

'I’m thinking of his family. His children. I pray for them to heal and find peace in this devastating loss.'

'I just can’t believe it.'

Binky Felstead has always been open about life as a single mum – and it ain't easy.

The former Made in Chelsea star is mum to the CUTEST toddler India, who will celebrate her second birthday in June.

India's dad is former MIC star Josh ''JP'' Patterson, who split with Binky 15 months after the birth.

The 28-year-old has since been vocal about the struggles of single motherhood and how tough she is finding things.

She told Women's Health, ''Of course there are times where I think, ‘F***, I’m on my own and I’ve got a baby.''

We hear you, Binks.

On top of that, social media has been a pain in the arse for her, with snaps of seemingly happy families everywhere.

She said, ''I was home with India and I would see on Instagram that everyone was out and about and I just felt really isolated.''

She continued, ''I can get quite low scrolling through Instagram and seeing all these happy, or what looks like happy, families – mums and dads and babies”.

While her love life might be quiet atm, she has been working at her fitness – and her Instagram snaps show her hard work (those abs are enviable).

Binky says that people aren't used to seeing her in this kind of shape.

She said, ''People remember me being bigger back in Made in Chelsea. Not bigger but I was curvier and I didn’t ever go to the gym, so my body has changed.''

She continued, ''All other girls who are on Instagram posting in bikinis didn’t get criticised because they’ve always looked like that. But because I’ve lost a bit of weight they feel like they can say something.''

We think she looks fab – and that she's kicking ass at being a single mum – India is so lucky to have her.

The Sinner season three will be hitting our screens.

USA Network has confirmed the good news and announced that Matt Bomer will be going head-to-head with Bill Pullman’s Detective Harry Ambrose.

If you're not familiar with Matt, you might recognise him from the Will & Grace reboot as McCoy Whitman or as Andy from AHS' Freak Show (you know, the guy whose arm was sawed off by Dandy in the trailer?)

Well, he's set to take on the role of Jamie, who is an upstanding Dorchester resident and expectant father who looks to Ambrose for support after the accident.

This new season will follow ''Detective Harry Ambrose as he begins a routine investigation of a tragic car accident on the outskirts of Dorchester, in upstate New York. Ambrose uncovers a hidden crime that pulls him into the most dangerous and disturbing case of his career.''

Matt follows leads Jessica Biel and Carrie Coon, who took on the main roles in the first and second seasons.

Will  he match their unreal performances?

Matt took to social media to post about the fantastic news.

Matt's fans were delighted with the news.

One wrote, ''Oh wow! Great news. I love that show. I will be looking forward to S3 with greater anticipation now.''

While another said, ''Cannot wait. Absolutely love this show and love your work so I’m well happy.''

Although there's no official release date yet, it looks likely that it’ll be coming in August.

Now we'll just re-watch the first two seasons to get pumped up for this one…

Westlife fans, we have good news.

The Irish band are reportedly set to hit out TV screens wit a fly-on-the-way documentary and we are BUZZING.

The group, who have had 14 UK No1 singles, will be followed by cameras on their 33-date European tour, which kicks off in Belfast this May.

We LOVE a bitta behind-the-scenes goss.

And the tell-all show has now found itself in the middle of a bidding war between Netflix and Sky.

Kian Egan said, ''We’ve had crews on us since the first day because we knew straight away – we’ve got to capture it even if it’s just for ourselves.''

He continued, ''I think it’s just a case of figuring out whether it’s going to be a Netflix or a Sky thing.''

Fellow bandmate Shane Filan added, ''We’ll document it in some way because it’s important for us and our kids and for the fans to realise how it all came back together. I think that it is going to be magic.”

The documentary will also feature footage form the end of Westlife the first ime around, in 2012.

Shane said, ''No one’s ever seen that. It’s just us.”

We'll be tuning in, that's for sure.

You couldn't make this stuff up.

Joey Gaydos Jr,is best known for playing insanely talented guitarist  Zack Mooneyham in the now-iconic 2003 Jack Black flick, School of Rock. And it seems that the 27-year-old is now living out the real rock 'n' roll lifestyle.

Joey has been arrested for allegedly stealing guitars and selling them in pawn shops in Florida.

Sticking it to the man or what?

According to TMZ, police said he would walk into shops and ask to test a guitar, before sauntering out without paying.

He is supposed to have nicked a Gibson Les Paul worth a cool $1900 (£1,440) and a Fender Stratocaster worth $699 (£530).

But perhaps the most far-fetched part of all is that he also stole guitar amps, including ONE FROM HIS OWN DAD.

Like, how does that even happen?

Joking aside, hes now he's facing felonies for larceny and grand theft.

Joey reportedly blamed the theft on his drug problem and later entered a not guilty plea in court.

The child star hasn't acted since his School of Rock heyday and is apparently unemployed at present.

Oh and btw – there is actual footage of him walking out of a store with a Buddy Guy Fender Stratocaster…so you're kinda busted Joey.

Aer Lingus has finally copped on to the fact that it's 2019 and ditched some outdated rules.

The airline has announced that their cabin crew are no longer required to wear make-up at work.

Yes, the ''trolly dolly'' standards that they're known for (and that belong in the 1950s) have been banished.

The company confirmed to The Times that until now all its female staff had no choice but to wear slap as part of their work uniform.

We feel for them, the actual EFFORT of it .

We're doing well if we throw on some foundation for the office.

However, now Aer Lingus said that new guidelines would not include mandatory use for the first time EVER.

Not a moment too soon, huh?

As well as make-up, female employees will soon be allowed to wear trousers, instead of the previously obligatory skirts.

Yeah you read that right, obligatory skirts.

Aer Lingus are following in the footsteps of Virgin Atlantic, who announced this week it was allowing female members of the  cabin crew to scrap the make-up if they wanted.

We're delighted for those women, who are surely chuffed that they'll get an extra few minutes in bed now.

By Domhnall O' Donoghue

Actor and journalist Domhnall O’Donoghue explains how his experiences living in between two brothels served as inspiration for his second novel, Colin and the Concubine:

Before 2016, I'd always believed myself to be streetwise. Without tooting my own horn, I was certain that I had a good sense of all the shenanigans that were going on around me. You might imagine my disappointment, therefore, at learning that I’d been living slap bang in the middle of two brothels, and despite all the obvious signs, it took me weeks to realise that these ladies were more than just convivial social butterflies.

The first brothel took the form of a massage parlour and was located next to the entrance of my new apartment complex in Dublin city centre. Just after receiving the keys from the landlord, I was busy unloading my suitcases and boxes from the boot of my boyfriend’s car when I noticed a series of men enter and exit the premises – most of whom were in the older age bracket, over 65, say.

‘Aren’t these gentlemen just marvellous, taking such good care of their ageing bodies,’ I thought to myself, as I lugged another box into my new abode. ‘When it comes to aches and pains, so many men suffer in silence! I must ring my mother and get her to encourage Dad to make an appointment – hasn’t he been complaining of a sore lower back recently?’

That evening, inside, as we treated ourselves to a well-earned glass of vino, having unpacked all our wares, I began noticing how frequently the intercom for the apartment directly next to us sounded. I remember looking at the clock at one stage – it was close to midnight, and a school night.

‘Great, it seems like we have friendly neighbours,’ I commented as I made light work of the Sauvignon Blanc. ‘We must invite them over dinner one of these nights.’

While a meal never materialised, it wasn’t long before things became a little fishy…

As the days passed, our initial admiration for our neighbours’ hospitable nature soon made way for exasperation. It seemed that time wasn’t an issue for their guests’ visits and no matter the hour – be it four in the afternoon or four in the morning – the loud intercom blared resulting in our forty winks been reduced to single digits.

Similar to our own, their apartment was on the ground floor. It faced out onto our communal courtyard and I was struck by the fact that their curtains were never drawn; their windows were never open.

However, I finally had my lightbulb moment about a week later when two incidents occurred simultaneously that allowed me to properly deduce what was at play right on my doorstep.

The first incident took place during the dead of night. My trip to the Land of Nod was suddenly interrupted by the sounds of screaming in the hallway.

‘I want my money back! I didn’t even get to do anything to her!’

Never one to ignore a juicy scuffle, I jumped out of the bed, raced to our door and peeped through the spy hole. A young, inebriated chap was storming the hallway demanding his money be returned to him post haste.

A male figure then appeared at my neighbours’ door and threw a note at this unwanted figure – who I suspected wasn’t the local pizza delivery guy soliciting a tip.

The following morning, I was returning from the reception area having just picked up the post and I spotted a chap waiting outside my neighbours’ apartment. He was handsome and athletic and wore casual clothes while a backpack was draped over one shoulder. I noticed that his face looked somewhat panicked and despite the distance between us, I was certain that I glimpsed beads of sweat on his forehead. Then he did something rather peculiar.

He blessed himself.

Before he became aware of my presence, the door opened and the seemingly devout Christian cautiously entered the apartment. As I passed, for the first time, my neighbour and I locked eyes – she looked Eastern European and was strikingly beautiful if somewhat peaky. My smile wasn’t reciprocated – instead, it received a curt slamming of the door.

While I wasn’t going to be considered for a job at CSI anytime soon, I finally understood what was happening: I was living next door to a brothel. And maybe that massage parlour outside the complex wasn’t exactly what it appeared to be either…

For the duration of my stay at that address, I was doing a large amount of work from home and I became intrigued by all that was happening across the hallway. It emerged that there were two women and one man – all from Romania – living and working there. As a way of entertaining myself, I began having  a little fun with their male callers – purposely bumping into them in the hallway and being nothing short of a nuisance.

'I don't suppose you could help me find my missing cat?’

'My name is Domhnall and I've just moved in – you must be my new neighbour. What's your name?

‘Oh, are you the plumber I just called – my apartment is this way.'

That sort of nonsense – but those looks of panic etched across their faces as they tried to make up some excuse or other almost made up for the sleepless nights.

Running parallel to this tomfoolery, the marriage equality referendum was being debated passionately on the radio, television and across the media. How often I rolled my eyes skywards when I heard or read the argument that the gay community was “a threat to the institution of marriage” when there were queues of men – many of whom were married – lining up outside my next-door neighbours’ apartment and the massage parlour.

However, it wasn’t just in these two aforementioned properties where happy endings occurred – these experiences gave me the material to write my new novel, Colin and the Concubine, a light-hearted farce about a baker named Colin who – surprise, surprise – lives beside a brothel.

My stint in that particular apartment was short-lived but I believe that soon after I left, the Gardaí caught wind of the high jinks taking place and neither brothel continues to exist today – at least in those locations. Where those ladies are today is anyone’s guess; my only hope is that they aren’t in danger.

Colin and the Concubine is available nationwide and online from mercierpress.ie.
