Yearly Archives: 2019

The tackiest night in Irish television is upon us once more.

Every year, we send an act to some European capital to sing and dance onstage alongside the rest of the EU in the hopes of taking home the trophy and hosting the same thing the following year in our capital.

We've won the thing a record-breaking seven times (and three years back-to-back which is INSANE) and although the last few years have seen our luck dissipate, we still enjoy a good Eurovision party every May.

This year, however, isn't like any other.

The 64th edition of the competition is set to take place this Saturday in Tel Aviv, Israel.

So what exactly is the boycott and why is it happening?

It centers on Israel's alleged human rights abuses towards the Palestinian people, with Gaza-based Palestinian Artists Association has since accused Israel of using the event to “perpetuate oppression, promote injustice or whitewash a brutal apartheid regime”.

There has been a petition signed by many famous faces who say that by letting Israel host the Eurovision, we are supporting the violation of Palestinian human rights.

Among those who have signed it are band Wolf Alice, Peter Gabriel, Roger Waters while a counter-letter has been penned by Stephen Fry, Sharon Osbourne, Marina Abramovic, and Scooter Braun.

The letter states that ''Spirit of togetherness is under attack by those calling to boycott Eurovision 2019 because it is being held in Israel, subverting the spirit of the contest and turning it from a tool of unity into a weapon of division.''

The crux of the whole thing boils down to the fact that those who are for the competition to go ahead are saying that they are so because the contest is not supposed to be political in any way and they are not performing for politicians.

Instead, they are for putting on a show for the people, the audience, for entertainment and unity.

It will be broadcast by both RTE and BBC and both stations have issued statements to this effect.

RTE said, ''As a long-running non-political, entertainment event, the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) is designed to bring audiences and countries together. RTÉ is confident that the European Broadcasting Union and the host broadcaster will take all necessary steps to safeguard the non-political character of the event throughout the organization of the competition.''

BBC meanwhile echoed a similar sentiment.

They said, ''The competition has always supported the values of friendship, inclusion, tolerance, and diversity and we do not believe it would be appropriate to use the BBC’s participation for political reasons. Because of this, we will be taking part in this year’s event. The host country is determined by the rules of the competition, not the BBC.”

The irony here is why their point might be seen as acceptable where the host country is involved in minor conflict or political unease when it comes to the case in Israel, it's not the same.

Rory Cowen of Mrs. Browns' Boys' has been vocal on social media and tv in his support for the contest taking place in Tel Aviv and he tweeted, ''We were there in Russia, in Turkey, in Azerbaijan, in the UK, etc. We went to perform in many countries that were involved in conflicts. It would be discriminatory to single out just one not to go to'' to which he received a reply saying, ''Israel is not involved in a conflict. The Israeli regime is involved in the systematic extermination of the Palestinian people. Quite a different thing altogether.''

Ireland's entrant Sarah McTernan is getting ready to take to the stage for tomorrow nights second semi-final.

The Clare native, who will sing 22, had to hit back at the massive backlash she has gotten for going to Tel Aviv.

She said, ''Everybody has their opinion on the issue, which is totally fine, but we’re about the music, and about spreading the love and the music, and that’s what Eurovision is about. We’re here, and we’re loving it.''

There is a really strong for-against that appears to be happening in the media.

Madonna, who is set to perform at the live final this Saturday, is determined to perform despite the loud callings for a boycott.

The numbers are low for fans travelling from Ireland to Tel Aviv – Diarmuid Furlong, president of Ireland’s Eurovision Fan Club confirmed that there would only be 30.

And overall, there will only be 5,000 or so foreign fans in Tel Aviv, much less than hoped for by organisers…these figures speak for themselves.

What will you be doing this Saturday – tuning in or blocking it out?

Stacey Solomon is set to welcome her third child into the world in a matter of weeks and there’s no doubt the mum is feeling as excited as ever about the pending arrival of her newborn.

However, Stacey has admitted she has felt pressure from people because she has had each of her children with a different dad.

The Loose Women panelist opened up to Closer magazine about her family and stressed that we need to break the stigma about having babies with different dads.

She said: “I did feel guilty about having babies with different dads. I didn't want my kids to have a negative or confused upbringing. There's a stigma about having babies with different partners."

The soon-to-be mum-of-three added: “I've definitely felt pressure from people – people I don't know, and even people I do know. Even those close to me have had their opinions on it, and that can hurt."

Stacey said she doesn’t let these comments get to her. She knows that her two boys- seven-year-old Leighton and 11-year-old Zachary- will always be loved and cared for, no matter what.

“My boys are incredibly loved – by me and their fathers, and by Joe, who is just another positive male role model in their lives. And that can only be good for them. They are so content and confident and happy,” she revealed.

She has been an iconic figure in the world of children’s literature longer than you can even imagine so it’s safe to say my book-loving heart nearly burst with joy when I was asked to interview Dame Jacqueline Wilson.

That’s right, author of The Story of Tracy Beaker, Double Act, Dustbin Baby and pretty much every other book that shaped our childhoods.

The Story of Tracy Beaker was a book we all treasured as kids. We couldn’t help but fly through the pages to find out if Tracy’s dream of her mum rescuing her from The Dumping Ground would come true.

Wilson published a whopping 40 books before making her mark in the literature world in 1991 when she released The Story of Tracy Beaker so it will come as no surprise to hear that Tracy still holds a special place in her heart.

“Tracy is a character that stayed in my mind a lot. Recently, I’ve been writing about her as an adult because I very much wanted to show that even though you haven’t had very good parenting yourself. It doesn’t mean that you can’t be a fantastic mum.

“Tracy hasn’t changed character completely, she is still as feisty as ever but she adores her daughter and My Mum Tracey Beaker gives readers a chance to reconnect with her and find out what is happening at this point in her life.”

“That is what is so lovely about being a writer, you can live in your own life, then you can experience all other lives too.

“It’s nice to think about my characters as real people and to visit them in the present and see what they’ve been up to, Jacqueline added.

The author cares for Tracy so much that she is already working on a second book about the grown up Tracy Beaker. She couldn’t share too much about the upcoming book but Jacqueline revealed the story will focus on Tracy’s love life.

“Tracy is single and her daughter Jess is wondering about this. She dabbles in a bit of matchmaking, but that’s all I can say at the moment.”

Just like Tracy, Jacqueline’s other characters tackle big emotional subjects, whether that is homelessness, adoption or big family secrets like Mona in her latest book Dancing the Charleston.

The historical novel is set during the 1920s and Jacqueline believes readers will gain a lot from the tale.

“It was a decade of independent thinking,” she explained. “I think you get more out of a story when you’re not just thinking about modern YouTubers, you’re leading a life intently, the only way you commute with people is face-to-face.”

Lead character Mona helps readers see the perks of living in the moment, “Today you can order anything online and have groceries delivered, it’s a great convenience, but there was a rhythm of being sociable and having little chats with somebody that people tend to forget when they’re rushing around frantically.”

Jacqueline stressed: “Remember that this is the only life you’ve got and we may as well enjoy it.”

Image result for the story of tracy beaker book

Her books became such a staple part of my childhood and guided me through those tricky young adult years. As an avid bookworm, Jacqueline says the comfort books offer her is second to none.

“For me, reading is such an important part of my life, but then again I’m older I’m not really interested in social media or care if people like something I’ve posted. It is easier for me.

"Reading a book is such a comfort, especially if you’ve got some big worry going on. You can lose yourself in a book. There have been times when I’ve been sitting in a hospital waiting room and my only way to cope is to read a book."

"If you read a book where the character is going through something similar or something you’re worried about it is so comforting. I think it is far more helpful than any form of self-help book."

A lot of Jacqueline’s fans have now grown up and many have children of their own. She laughed during our chat saying, “I’ve been writing for so long that now the people interviewing me, young mums outside the local nursery school, they all know who I am and have read my books.”

But will the legendary children’s writer ever pen a book for grown ups? “It is a very tempting idea. Recently so many people in their twenties say lovely things about the books they read when they were children. It is worth thinking about, you never know, watch this space.”

It's incredibly difficult to believe that on Sunday night at 2am, the last EVER episode of Game of Thrones will air on Sky Atlantic.

The hugely successful HBO show has broken barriers of television, despite mixed reviews of season eight, and its fan-base is hopelessly devoted to GOT's amazing characters.

We've got plenty of questions to ask ahead of the grand finale that have yet to be answered, and we're not certain that the show can resolve every plot in just 90 minutes.

Time will tell, but after last weeks' mad destruction of King's Landing by Dark Dany (we're devastated for Emilia Clarke), the teaser for next week's final is looking incredibly bleak indeed.

The Mad Queen's reign as arrived, but will it be ended before it truly begins? And by whom?

I mean, Olenna Tyrell did tell her to be a dragon. She just did what she was told…okay?! Some of us clearly haven't come to terms with Dany's downfall yet. We're in Dany Denial over here.

Here's a comprehensive list of all our questions, before our hearts get ripped out this Sunday. Get the tissues out.

1. Why the hell did Danaerys chargrill King's Landing after they surrendered?

A post shared by Game of Thrones (@noonejedi) on

Interestingly, the show didn't give visuals of Danaerys' face during the total destruction and murder of innocent people in the city; all we saw was her tear-stained, furious face just before she made the decision which will inevitably change her life.

Most people surmise that Dany pulled the trigger on her logic because she realised that even though the people had surrendered, they would never love her. They would always want to follow Jon, and a man, as Varys pointed out.

Her tragic villain origin story was definitely turned dark way too suddenly, and didn't do her character justice.

A post shared by Una finestra tra le stelle (@unafinestratralestelleblog) on

She always had a ruthless streak, but who wouldn't after being sold as a mule by your gropey brother, raped, experienced the death of your baby and husband, leading to the inability to have children, imprisoned, laughed at, ridiculed, losing two of her dragons (AKA her babies), her long-time advisor Jorah and her BFF Missandei.

She also must have had the knowledge that her claim to the throne was totally lost, and her lover Jon betrayed her, as well as Tyrion and Varys. She knew that she had to rule with fear, and if the people found out that Jon is the true heir, they'd be too afraid to challenge her.

We're not surprised that she went to the dark side, we've seen her roast her enemies alive on numerous occasions but there was always a reason behind it.

2. Is Arya going to kill Dany?

It's important not to forget the prophecy told to Arya by Melisandre when the pair first met in season three;

“I see a darkness in you. And in that darkness, eyes staring back at me: brown eyes, blue eyes, green eyes. Eyes you’ll shut forever.”

The Red Witch later gave Arya that all-important pep talk which led her to kill the Night King (blue eyes), but now fans are speculating that it was never Cersei's green eyes that Arya was meant to shut. It was Dany's.

Viewers are convinced that the mini assassin's destiny has changed since 'The Bells', and the white horse at the end symbolises death. Essentially, the trailer for next week shows Arya watching Danerys take her lead, and it's looking like a sure thing that Dany's days are numbered.

3. Where the absolute f*ck is Yara Greyjoy?

At the start of episode four, Varys told Danaerys that Yara had retaken the Iron islands, yet she didn't show up at King's Landing for the big battle.

Will she turn up next week? She has had that many scenes over the last while in the show, but we were so excited to see her kill Euron Greyjoy. It would have been far more poetic and just an end than Jamie killing him.

We really hope this isn't the last we've seen of Yara; she's got some of the best lines in the script and is a total badass.

4. Will Dany find out that Jamie escaped, and because of Tyrion?

Jamie is RIP underneath all of that rubble, dying with his arms wrapped around Cersei, the woman he's always loved.

We're sure their deaths will be discovered eventually, but will it be found out that Tyrion let Jamie go to try and save the city?  Ser Davos Seaworth would also be in trouble, and he's one of Jon's closest advisors. Killing him would put Jon in a rough position.

With vengeance firmly on the Mad Queen's mind, and her hatred of betrayal, we're fairly sure Tyrion would be BBQ'd by Drogon if she found out.

A post shared by Game Of Thrones (@gameofthrones.page) on

5. Will Jon's claim to the throne be investigated, if Varys' letter got out before he died?

At the moment, a LOT of people know Jon has the true claim; Sansa, Arya, Sam, Bran, Tyrion, Dany at a minimum. Who was Varys addressing his letter at the beginning of 'The Bells' to, we wonder?

He also tried to poison Dany, in case you missed that nugget at the beginning, which is wild. Sam and Bran appear to have the most information on the claim, which came about as Crown Prince Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark were married in secret and bore a child together.

Ned Stark took care of the child so that Robert Baratheon didn't murder him in one of the great wars, and Jon (Aegon Targaryen) grew up thinking he was a bastard his entire life. When this information gets around, what will the realm do?

A post shared by Historical Romance Addict (@regencyromp) on

6. Who are the new lords and ladies of the lands? Is Tyrion finally the Lord of Casterly Rock

Tyrion's dickhead of a dad Tywin Lannister refused Tyrion his birthright of one day becoming Lord of Casterly Rock, but after Cersei and Jamie died, he's the only living Lannister.

Danaerys (if she lives) would rule the Crownlands, the 'new prince' would rule Dorne, Yara Greyjoy has the Iron Islands, the Starks (Sansa) have the North, Gendry Baratheon has the Stormlands, Robin Arryn has the Vale, Tyrion would have the Westerlands but Highgarden and the Riverlands are unknown.

7. If Drogon dies, and magic officially dies out, what will happen then?

A post shared by Emilia Khaleesi (@deanerys_targarian) on

We were absolutely devastated when Rhaegal and Viserion were killed; Rhaegal by Euron Greyjoy in a surprise attack and Viserion by the White Walkers.

Seeing Viserion transformed into a wight demon and blowing blue flames was intense, and we truly felt Dany's pain at losing two of her children. If Drogon dies, who knows if dragons will ever live in the realm again?

Mrs Targaryen shares a type of telepathic communication with her babies, but it's looking more and more likely that Drogon will die alongside Dany in the finale. If Dany dies and Drogon lives, he would fly away, but if Drogon dies, Dany is powerless.

Just like the white walkers, it seems dragons will have to go extinct for this war to end.

8. What will the series finale be called?

The show-runners (DB Weiss and David Benioff) have kept the names of each episode this season a secret until after they've already aired, which is shady. Will the finale be called A Song of Ice and Fire, AKA the name of the Book Series?

9. Will the Iron Throne still exist by the end?

We saw the Mother of Dragons blow King's Landing to rubble, so is the throne even left standing after all of that turmoil? It could be buried beneath the rubble, but the whole seat of power could be erased.

Daenarys once said she wants to "break the wheel," and destroying the throne could be step one of the process.

A post shared by  (@theoliversopinion) on

10. Is Arya dead?

This theory has genuinely scared us. At the end of 'The Bells', we saw Arya running terrified around the city, with various rocks and buildings falling on her and flames getting caught around her, and she went unconscious.

Some fans believe that she died in the city after all, and the white horse at the end symbolised her own death. This explains why the ending seemed so strange and spiritual, but then again she's seen in the trailer for next week.

The show does seem to have a knack for bringing people back to life, so there's that idea too.

11. Where is Brienne? And will Bronn end up killing Tyrion Lannister?

Our gal loves a good battle, so why did she stay behind? We're furious that they turned her into a weeping woman after Jamie left, they should have left that at a respectful friendship. As for Bronn, perhaps he'll wipe out the last member of the Lannister family?

12. What will happen to the Night's Watch?

Seeing as all of those pesky White Walkers are dead and dusted, thanks to Arya, and the wall is wrecked (bold Viserion) will there be a need for a Night's Watch any more?

13. What will be Bran's role in all of this?

Ah Bran. There have been countless theories about the three-eyed raven's role since the very beginning, even some fans guessing that he'll be the new Night King.

A post shared by Isaac Hempstead Wright (@isaachwright) on

Seeing as Bran can time travel, it's thought that he could represent all of the Brandon Starks in history, from old Nan's tales. That means the Brandon Stark that built the wall.

Bran may warg back in time, and try to stop the White Walkers from being created, but accidentally get stuck there with the Children of the Forest.

He then may have travelled in time to have the wall built, and have Arya kill the Night King with the dagger that was used to try and kill him when he was only a boy.

Both Bran's vision and Danaerys' prophecy came true in 'The Bells'; Back in season six, Bran saw flashes of the Night King's death as well as the Mad King Aerys screaming, "Burn them all!".

He was referring to his daughter, who ended up fulfilling his mad wish. Shots of a dragon flying over King's Landing can be seen, echoing Dany's dark destruction of the city last week.

Dany's vision in the House of the Undying saw snow in the Red Keep, but actually it was ash from her dragon's burning of the city. We wish they had adequately portrayed Dany's downfall over the last two season.

The foreshadowing is mind-blowing, but will Bran have more to offer? He could be the key to unravelling the future of the realm, and whether magic lives on.

14. Finally, will Ghost get a hug from Jon before the show ends?

game of thrones GIF

We're guessing not. If Jon gets the Iron Throne, he'd be the perfect hand to the king (or would it be paw to the king?).

Kim opened up about one of her potential names during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel.

She told the comedian and host that she was considering naming the baby after one of her siblings.

She spilled that she could name her son after her brother Robert Kardashian. Robert is a family name, as her father also carried the moniker before passing it down to Kim's brother Rob.

The 39-year-old is mum to four-year-old Florence and one-year-old Enzo.

Jennifer said that she had the procedure in February 2018 after she gave birth to Enzo.

She said, ''My tubes are tied. I had a C-section and while the surgeon was down there – job done.''

She added, ''Lau really didn't want to have any more. Life is busy enough with two and with work.”

Jennifer will be starting her own morning show on 2FM in June and the fact that she and Lau don't work ''steady jobs'' is also a reason they're happy with two kids.

She told the VIP Magazine, ''It's not an overnight success, it didn't just happen, I didn't just get plucked from RTÉ.''

She continued, ''I've been chipping away doing great TV shows, doing s***ty TV shows, getting rejected, getting ideas rejected.''

She's happy with her two gorgeous little ones and that's all that matters.

Love Island bosses have apparently decided to not pay an on-air tribute to reality star Mike Thalassitis at the beginning of season five.

The former contestant, who took part on the 2017 series alongside Chris Hughes, Kem Cetinay and Olivia Attwood, was found dead in the woods near North London in March.

It is believed that the 26-year-old tragically took his own life after his experience with mental health issues. The inquest into his death is scheduled for this month, so more information is incoming.

The Love Island producers have decided to honour Mike in a tribute on ITV’s on-demand service, which plays the 2017 series and will soon be available as a box-set.

An insider told The Sun: "It felt more appropriate to do it there." It was recently claimed that contestants will have to pass STI tests and mental health screenings to gain acceptance to the new series following Mike's death.

“Bosses want stars to be safe mentally and physically. Their biggest nightmare would be someone contracting an STI, so potential contestants must have several rounds of medical tests," the source continued.

"Advance sessions with counsellors and psychologists have been ramped up to ensure that everyone can handle the fame. They are prepared to cut potentially strong personalities from the line-up if there is any hint of mental instability."

The hugely popular TV dating show returns the first weekend of June with a brand new crop of hopefuls seeking love and fame.

The suicide of 2016 contestant Sophie Gradon last year has led to a major shake-up for the 2019 series, with safeguards to look after contestants being introduced.

Participants will now be given social media training and financial management advice as well.

The creative director of ITV Studios wrote in a statement on the new initiatives: “When something so awful happens we naturally enter a period of soul searching and ask whether anything could have been done."

“This review has led us to extend our support processes to offer therapy to all Islanders and not only those that reach out to us," he continued. Social media, mental health and reality tv appear to go hand-in-hand.

Richard Cowles insisted Mike's death had nothing to do with the show, but improvements had to be made: "The key focus will be for us to no longer be reliant on the Islanders asking us for support but for us to proactively check in with them on a regular basis.”

Dame Carolyn McCall,  ITV’s chief executive, insisted it would be ‘extremely tenuous’ to link the show to his passing; "I don’t think anybody has made a direct link between what happened to Mike and ‘Love Island’ and that is very important to say."
