Bella Thorne has found herself at the centre of a social media storm this week after she appeared to dismiss the suffering of Montecito residents, who are currently struggling with the aftermath of a mudslide which claimed the lives of 17 people.

As family grieve their loved ones, the community continue to search for missing friends and neighbours while navigating the destruction left in the wake of the natural disaster.

Seemingly undisturbed by the scale of the disaster, Bella took to Twitter to complain about the disruption to traffic in California, posting: "F*ck u 101 to Santa Barbra. I'm missing my boyfriend's first date on his tour."

The tweet was met with disgust by veteran actor, Rob Lowe, who wasted no time highlighting the actress's repugnant attitude to human suffering.

Responding to the ill-advised post which has since been deleted, the West Wing actor wrote on Instagram: "This attitude is why people hate celebrities/Hollywood. Bella."

"I'm sorry you were inconvenienced. We will try to move out our dead quicker," he added, succinctly reminding her of the scale of the disaster.

While 20-year-old Bella did not respond to Rob's retort, the actress did return to Twitter in the aftermath, claiming she was unaware of the magnitude of the situation.

"F**k just caught up on some news had no idea why the 101 was shut down…get home to your family safe," she advised fans and followers.

While Rob's criticism of Bella has been met with a mixed response from commenters, it has received more than 44,000 likes in mere hours.

"The reason I tweet this now is to let you know that a great originator and founder of Ireland’s online beauty blogosphere has left us," wrote Kirstie McDermott earlier today following the sudden passing of her sister Aisling McDermott.

Aisling, who was best known for her work with The Irish Times and for co-founding beaut.ie alongside Kirstie, had been battling multiple sclerosis for two decades.

Taking to Twitter this morning, Kirstie wrote: "This is the story of a hair turban and a beauty-obsessed sister. On Tuesday, I bought @aismcdermott a hair turban I’d been promising her. I knew I’d see her the next day."

"She’s had aggressive MS for 20 years and she was getting worse, but she still looked so glam," Kirstie added before breaking the news to fans and followers of Aisling's passing.

"I never got to give her that turban," Kirstie wrote. "But I raise all the lipsticks in the world to someone who fought so bravely for so long and left behind such a legacy. Sleep well, Aisling. We loved you hugely."

Tributes to the writer have poured in in the wake of Kirstie's post, with many remembering Aisling's warmth, creativity and supportive nature.

"I've followed Aisling online for years and she was such a wonderful person," wrote one while another added: "Today I will wear my lipstick extra bold in Ais’s honour."

In addition to creating beaut.ie, Aisling wrote The Beaut.ie Guide to Gorgeous and Gorgeous to Go and co-wrote About Face: The Smart Woman's Guide to Beauty with Irish Times beauty writer Laura Kennedy.

Few stars are as truly likeable as Margot Robbie.

From her heartfelt dedication to beer baths to her teenage devotion to Harry Potter, the Australian actress is easily one of the most relatable in Hollywood.

But if you needed further proof of this, you need look no further than a recent anecdote she shared while appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Breaking into guffaws countless times throughout her re-telling, Margot explained how her husband Tom spent an exercise session desperately hiding his modesty in front of an equally awkward Ellen DeGeneres, Portia DeRossi and Barack Obama… while on honeymoon.

We're going to let Margot take it from here…

The Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in Ireland has put its support behind the recommendations put forward by the Joint Committee on the Eight Amendment.

In a report published last month, the committee recommended that abortion be allowed without restriction up to 12 weeks into pregnancy.

Members also voted in favour of unrestricted termination in cases of fatal foetal abnormality and in cases where there is a serious risk to the mother's health and wellbeing.

In a short statement issued on Wednesday, the institute said it looked forward to “informing legislation to enhance women's health and safety.”

As the national professional and training body for obstetrics and gynaecology in Ireland, its members have been drawn from maternity units across the country.

Current chair and former master of the National Maternity Hospital at Holles Street, Dr Peter Boylan spoke at committee hearing in October of last year.

In he statement, Dr Boylan stressed how the Eight Amendment gave rise to “significant difficulties for doctors practising in Ireland and has caused grave harm to women, including death”.

The institute's decision to back the recommendations is being hailed as a significant step forward for the repeal campaign.

A gym in southern Turkey has gifted a Syrian child refugee with a lifetime membership after a touching photo went viral.

12-year-old Mohammed Khaled, who works as a shoeshiner in Adiyaman province, melted hearts across the country when he was pictured staring longingly into the window with a footstool strapped to his back.

The heartbreaking photo quickly spread across social media, grabbing the attention of gym owner Engin Dogan.

Clearly moved by the image, Engin offered Mohammed an all-access lifetime pass to the facility.

Speaking to Hurriyet News, he said: “A boy, looking through the gym window, wearing slippers in the middle of winter and carrying his backpack.

“Our aim was to find him and offer him a lifetime membership here. And, we did it.

“He is one of our members now.”

Mohammed, told the Turkish news agency, Anadolu, that the oppourtunity was a dream come true.

So, apparently, classic winter weight gain might not ONLY be down to the unreasonable amount of chocolate, cheese and booze we indulged in over the Christmas break.

According to new research by the University of Alberta, the lack of sun we experience during the winter months might actually be to blame.

The study, which was published this week, has shown that the fat cells which lie just beneath our skin shrink when exposed to the blue light emitted by the sun.

"When the sun's blue light wavelengths – the light we can see with our eye – penetrate our skin and reach the fat cells just beneath, lipid droplets reduce in size and are released out of the cell. In other words, our cells don't store as much fat," said Pr Peter Light, senior author of the study and the director of UAlberta's Diabetes Institute.

"If you flip our findings around, the insufficient sunlight exposure we get eight months of the year living in a northern climate may be promoting fat storage and contribute to the typical weight gain some of us have over winter," he added.

Now, in case you were thinking about it, don't rush to the sunbeds or go out in the sun unprotected in the hope of shedding a few pounds.

The researchers pointed out that the finding is only an initial observation and that pursuing exposure to sunlight is not a safe or recommended way to lose weight.

"For example, we don't yet know the intensity and duration of light necessary for this pathway to be activated," they said.

These findings could mean that the light which regulates our circadian rhythm, received through our eyes, may also have the same impact through the fat cells near our skin.

In addition to the much needed Vitamin D, that's another good reason to get out of your couch, drop the remove control and go outside to get a little sunshine!

In an uplifting lecture delivered by renowned physicist Stephen Hawking this week, the esteemed academic reassured those suffering from mental illness that even in the darkest time, there always exists hope.

Drawing a comparison between black holes and depression, the 76-year-old explained that ongoing research into the former established that they aren't the self-contained entities they were once thought to be.

"The message of this lecture is that black holes ain't as black as they are painted. They are not the eternal prisons they were once thought," Mr Hawking informed his audience at the Royal Institute in London.

Using this fact as a platform from which to encourage those suffering from mental health issues, Mr Hawking urged his audience to display perseverance in the face of adversity.

"Things can get out of a black hole both on the outside and possibly to another universe. So if you feel you are in a black hole, don't give up – there's a way out," he said.

The scholar chose to reflect on his own struggles over the course of the last five decades, and highlighted the importance of a positive attitude, even at the most despairing of times.

"It's important not to become angry, no matter how difficult life may seem because you can lose all hope if you can't laugh at yourself and life in general."

Adding: "Although it was unfortunate to get motor neurone disease, I have been very fortunate in almost everything else. I have been lucky to work in theoretical physics at a fascinating time and it' s one of the few areas in which my disability was not a serious handicap."

Mr Hawking, who is considered one of the greatest minds of our time, was diagnosed with motor neuron disease in 1963.

IKEA's latest advert might just be its most creative, albeit completely bonkers, marketing strategy to date.

In a bizarre yet oddly clever attempt to promote the sale of baby cribs, the Swedish furniture retailer is asking its female customers to pee on its latest print ad.

Sounds pretty disgusting, we know – but hear us out.

The flyer, designed by advertising agency Åkestam Holst, actually contains chemicals similar to those found in home pregnancy tests.

The idea is that when a pregnant women urinates on the ad, the positive result will reveal a discount code for the advertised crib.

The unique ad was published in the latest edition of Amelia – one of Sweden's most influential female-focused magazines.

Speaking to AdWeek, the agency behind the campaign said: “In order to make the interactive functions of this ad work in reality, we had to make several technical advancements.”

“The pregnancy test strip was used as a starting point… Careful selection of materials, together with a controlled capillary flow have been crucial for the success of this project. Technical advancements made during the work with this campaign have the potential to improve medical diagnostics.”

So, what do you reckon? Absolutely gross or utterly genius?

Yesterday, it was confirmed that Muireann O'Connell would take the place of Al Porter on Today FM's lunchtime slot – an announcement that was met with delight from both broadcasters and listeners, alike.

In November of last year after a number of sexual misconduct allegations, Al Porter made the decision to resign from his roles on Today FM and Blind Date.

In the wake of Muireann's appointment, the Tallaght-native was asked his opinion on the broadcaster set to take his place on the popular radio station, and wasted no time emphasising his support for the Limerick presenter.

Speaking to The Irish Star, the 25-year-old insisted that he felt the station had made the right decision, saying: "The minute I saw the news I texted Today FM's station manager Adelle to tell Muireann I think she'll be great and wish her the best."

With allegations of sexual misconduct still fresh in the public's mind, the comedian and presenter acknowledged the gravity of the situation and reiterated that he considered it appropriate to step down in the wake of the scandal.

"I wasn't asked to resign from any of my jobs, I took that step away myself, facing the very serious claims made," he added. "There are no hard feelings."

Keith McCormack, CEO of Today FM, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Muireann to the daytime line up on Today FM."

"Listeners will already be familiar with Muireann from her various roles on the station, notably her hugely successful ‘Saturday Hits’ show.”

British Vogue is facing huge criticism after publishing a pro-fur advertisement in its February edition.

With several major labels vowing to ditch the fur in 2018, the magazine's controversial position on the issue came as a shock to many readers.

The full-page advert for Wearefur.com shows three models posing in fur garments under the headline; 'Furnow and Forever.'

The ad caused quite the stir online with some readers pledging to cancel their subscriptions and boycott the publication altogether.

In 2009, then-editor Alexandra Shulman told The Guardian that “broadly speaking” fur did not feature in the pages of. British Vogue.

The decision to feature the latest ad has therefore led some readers to believe that Vogue's policy has changed under new editor Edward Enninful.

However, a spokesperson for the magazine said it while it does not promote fur in its editorial content, it will feature fur advertisements as long as they fit the regulations.

"Vogue’s policy has not changed," they said.

"From an advertising perspective, it has always been the commercial policy to accept fur advertisements as long as they strictly respect British and European Union legislation. Vogue may make reference to fur editorially as a trend if it is being featured on the catwalk."

A number of fashion brands including Gucci and Micheal Kors have already ceased the use fur in their products, though animal rights activist are hoping more labels will soon follow suit.
