Professor Stephen Hawking's life will be celebrated today at his funeral, after he passed peacefully at his Cambridge home on March 14 at the age of 76.

The renowned theoretical physicist was a fellow at Gonville and Caius College for 52 years.

The church hosting his private funeral can sit over 1,000 guests.

'Our father lived and worked in Cambridge for over 50 years,' Professor Hawking's children said in a statement.

'He was an integral and highly recognisable part of the university and the city. For this reason, we have decided to hold his funeral in the city that he loved so much and which loved him.'

'Our father's life and work meant many things to many people, both religious and non-religious.'

'So, the service will be both inclusive and traditional, reflecting the breadth and diversity of his life.'

Our thoughts are with his friends and family on this difficult day.

The iconic theoretical physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking has died at the age of 76.

His three children confirmed the devastating news in a statement this morning:

“We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years.
"His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world. He once said, ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him forever.”

His children- Tim, Lucy and Robert- added that their dad passed away peacefully at their family home in Cambridge earlier this morning.

At the age of 22, the world-renowned physicist was diagnosed with a rare type of motor neurone called ALS disease, he was given mere years to live.

However, he went on to achieve remarkable success, with his 1988 book A Brief History of Time selling millions of copies around the globe.

He had been paralysed since the age of 28, but despite this he continued to work, becoming Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, a role once held by Isaac Newton.

Best known for his scientific works, including his collaboration with Roger Penrose, which led him to discover that Einstein's General Theory of Relativity implies space and time would have a beginning in the Big Bang and an end in black holes.

The cosmologist also found that black holes should give off radiation and then disappear, this theory is now known as Hawking Radiation.

Tributes have been pouring in for the iconic British scientist.

Geraldine DeRuiter tweeted, “We were on earth at the same time as Stephen Hawking. That's kind of a miraculous thing. We breathed the same air as the man who demystified the stars.”

“According to an Australian physicist if #stephenhawking wanted to interrupt you he ran over your foot. His brilliance was carried lightly & with humour. I love that,” Rae Earl shared.

Neil deGrasse Tyson wrote, “His passing has left an intellectual vacuum in his wake. But it's not empty. Think of it as a kind of vacuum energy permeating the fabric of spacetime that defies measure.”

Inventor of the World Wide Web Tim Berners-Lee added, “We have lost a colossal mind and a wonderful spirit. Rest in peace, Stephen Hawking.”

In an uplifting lecture delivered by renowned physicist Stephen Hawking this week, the esteemed academic reassured those suffering from mental illness that even in the darkest time, there always exists hope.

Drawing a comparison between black holes and depression, the 76-year-old explained that ongoing research into the former established that they aren't the self-contained entities they were once thought to be.

"The message of this lecture is that black holes ain't as black as they are painted. They are not the eternal prisons they were once thought," Mr Hawking informed his audience at the Royal Institute in London.

Using this fact as a platform from which to encourage those suffering from mental health issues, Mr Hawking urged his audience to display perseverance in the face of adversity.

"Things can get out of a black hole both on the outside and possibly to another universe. So if you feel you are in a black hole, don't give up – there's a way out," he said.

The scholar chose to reflect on his own struggles over the course of the last five decades, and highlighted the importance of a positive attitude, even at the most despairing of times.

"It's important not to become angry, no matter how difficult life may seem because you can lose all hope if you can't laugh at yourself and life in general."

Adding: "Although it was unfortunate to get motor neurone disease, I have been very fortunate in almost everything else. I have been lucky to work in theoretical physics at a fascinating time and it' s one of the few areas in which my disability was not a serious handicap."

Mr Hawking, who is considered one of the greatest minds of our time, was diagnosed with motor neuron disease in 1963.

Still reeling from the news that One Direction is now a foursome? Devastated that Zayn chose Perrie over you? Well, we may be able to offer some comfort.

Renowned physicist Professor Stephen Hawking spoke at the Sydney Opera House over the weekend, appearing by 3D hologram on Saturday night from his actual location at Cambridge University in England.

If that wasn't cool enough, Professor Hawking answered some pretty unexpected questions. As well as  discussing the mysteries of the cosmos and the future of Planet Earth (standard), the physicist also made some very interesting points about Zayn Malik's recent shock departure from One Direction.

Zayn quit the band last month, and flew home to the UK to make peace with his fiancée Perrie following allegations he had cheated on her during the Asian leg of the One Direction world tour earlier this year.

An attendee at Professor Hawking's event on Saturday night finally broached the one thing we've all been wondering about, asking, "What is the cosmological effect of Zayn leaving One Direction and consequently breaking the hearts of millions of teenage girls across the world?”

"Finally, a question about something important,” responded the Professor.

“My advice to any heartbroken young girl is to pay close attention to the study of theoretical physics. Because one day there may well be proof of multiple universes. It would not be beyond the realms of possibility that somewhere outside of our own universe lies another different universe. And in that universe, Zayn is still in One Direction.”

To really spice things up, Professor Hawking added, "This girl may like to know that in another possible universe, she and Zayn are happily married."

WOW. Right, we're off to swot up on theoretical physics, so…
