Yearly Archives: 2018

Just when we thought the singer was out of surprises, she gave us one more.

Cardi B revealed she has a HUSBAND.

Rumours had been circulating for the last year that the couple had wed, but yesterday the Queen of rap confirmed the news on Twitter.

The 25-year-old reportedly had a no-frills ceremony when she married her boyfriend and baby's father, Offset.

"There are so many moments that I share with the world and there are moments that I want to keep for myself! Getting married was one of those moments!" she tweeted earlier this week.

In a lengthy post, the singer revealed the two have been husband and wife since September 2017.

The decision to tie the knot came one morning and the rest, as they say, is history.

"We found someone to marry us, and she did, just the two of us and my cousin. I said I do, with no dress, no makeup and no ring!" she explained.

In true Cardi B style, the queen finished her tweet with:

"Well now since you lil nosey f–ks know at least ya can stop saying I had a baby out of wedlock."

Belated congratulations to the happy couple!

Worrying new research has shown that Irish people have a seriously laid-back attitude when it comes to sexual health.

A new study conducted by Durex as part of its 'Wrap Up' campaign found that some 49 per cent of Irish people have had sex without protection against STIs, while just 27 per cent of us are making a conscious effort to prevent the transmission.

The research comes at a time when the HSE reports a rise of Chlamydia, Herpes and Gonorrhea amongst youths year on year, with the later having  increased by over 50 per cent between 2015 and 2016 alone.

Despite well over two-thirds of 18-24 year olds saying they feel confident in their knowledge of how to protect themselves against sexually transmitted diseases, Durex's recent findings suggest that just 27 per cent use any form of contraception against STIs at all.

So, why do we decide to takes risks when it comes to sexual health?

Here's the top three reasons cited by respondents.

1. “Confidence the other person is not carrying an STI” (35 per cent)

2. “The thought simply didn’t cross my mind” (23 per cent)

3. “Taken over by the heat of the moment” (35 per cent)

Reports show that  20–29-year-olds are most likely sufferer from an STIs, with The Health Protection Surveillance Center’s (HPSC) latest findings (October 2017) showing  the age group account for over half (58 per cemt) of diagnoses.

What's more, Durex's findings also found that just one in six Irish women have ever purchased condoms – and of those who do to use them, only 37 per cent admit to using them every time they have sex.

Speaking about the recent findings, Dr. Jack Lambert, Consultant in Infectious Disease and Genitourinary Medicine at The Mater Hospital, commented: “The rise in sexually transmitted diseases such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and Herpes in the past 12 months is a clear reflection of young people’s casual attitude to preventing the spread of STIs. Youths are incredibly liberal in terms of behaviour but the same approach is not taken in terms of carrying out regular STI checks."

"The surge in recordings of STIs year on year reflects several behavioural changes, with no two cases being the same. However, what can be taken from the recent findings is a need for further education on the matter and an open conversation when it comes to safe sex, not only with regards to preventing pregnancy but also STIs.”

Opening up about our insecurities is never an easy thing to do. We often try to cover up our flaws rather than drawing attention to them.

However, we need normalise our flaws, because we all have something we don’t like about our appearance, whether that’s our curly, frizzy hair or our freckles.

Chloe Grace Moretz has bravely opened up about her struggle with cystic acne and we love her for it. Speaking about our skin struggles will help show women that there’s no such thing as perfect, we all suffer from blemishes, zits and blackheads, it’s a completely normal thing.

The 21-year-old actress opened up about the impact cystic acne had on her confidence.

Chloe shared: "I think what people don't talk about is the psychological element to having skin problems, and that was the hardest thing for me. It strips your self-confidence in a lot of ways; you know you can't hide from it at all, and you lose a little piece of yourself.”

The If I Stay star said she put a lot of pressure on herself to look ‘perfect’: "When I was younger, I lost a piece of myself by being so self-obsessed with my skin blemishes or what people thought about them.”

“As I grew up, I realised that half the battle was myself, and my own self-infliction of what I thought 'beauty' and 'perfect' was. But then, you realise there's no such thing as perfect, and your skin will go through ups and downs.”

The Carrie actress added: “All you can do is try and be as self-accepting as possible."

When it comes to her skincare routine, Chloe said she likes to keep it simple, only using water, honey and olive oil.

Chloe’s empowering message about embracing your skin is vital for women today. We put far too much pressure on ourselves to look perfect and often knock ourselves down if we have a spot or two.

We need to remember that acne doesn’t define who you are and that Chloe is completely right, there is no such thing as looking ‘perfect’.

We are LOVING the scorcher that is heading our way this week.

As temperatures are set to rise, we are starting to contemplate how to get our pale skin to go brown, rather than red.

However, there is another hazard that the unfamiliar summer heat is bringing and you probably have it in your room.

The Dublin Fire Brigade took to Twitter to highlight the danger of mirrors, crystals and glasses kept beside windows.

Time to move the aerosols away as they can explode if exposed to the heat.

The video shows the damage caused as a result of a vanity mirror left in a window.

They issued a reminder to move everything into the shade and to keep in mind that the sun moves around as the day draws on.

The firefighters highlighted the need to stay well hydrated during the heatwave.

We should be gulping down at least 2.5 litres a day!

Excuse us while we run home, grab a bottle of water and make sure everything is in the shade!

Victoria Beckham has been rocking the pavements of the French capital this week.

Paris is playing host to fashion week, which means tight schedules and a lot of running around.

All the high fashion seems to have caught up with one member of the Beckham family, and Victoria was having none of it – rookie mistake!

The mum-of-four called out her son's sleepy antics like the lady boss she is.

The 44-year-old took to her Instagram story and owned Brooklyn.

The teen was seen trying to sleep on route to London via the Eurostar.

Victoria captioned the snap: "Love spending quality time with @brooklynbeckham."

To our sheer delighted, the fun didn't stop there as Victoria added another photo, just in case Brooklyn wasn't mortified enough the first time.

The fashion queen asked her 21m followers if she should take her the 19-year-old's sleeping personally.

It's fair to say, Brooklyn won't be falling asleep in his mother's company again.

Nope, we're not having it.

This is the new Ugliest Dog in the World- Zsa Zsa, a nine-year-old English bulldog. I'm sorry, but that dog is adorable.

When news of this broke, Twitter erupted with a tsunami of outraged tweets in response to Zsa Zsa's new title. Users did not seem to agree with the outcome of the contest and were quick to jump to Zsa Zsa's defence, claiming that she was, in fact, "the cutest."

Agreed.

The proud owner, Megan Brainard of Anoka, Minnesota, will receive $1,500(€1300) for the winning the contest.

Zsa Zsa's human is loving the overwhelmingly positive response that Zsa Zsa was receiving on Twitter. According to The Star Tribune, she said that "“She is just so ugly, she’s beautiful."

Preach.

While the dogs are not the most aesthetically-pleasing, Twitter really rallied behind them, showering them with love –  whoever said that lolling tongues, squished faces and hairless bodies weren't cute?!

We can all agree that though she may be a winner of the Ugly Dog Crown, Zsa Zsa is the cutest ugly dog we have ever seen?!

I must admit that I struggle to get through the day without my regular cup of coffee. I need that cup of joy to help wake me up in the morning, especially with a lengthy commute ahead of me.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who turns into an angry little gremlin without my caffeine fix, whether it’s a flat white from my favourite local cafe or a mug of instant coffee at 6 am.

I’m a true coffee addict and pride myself on being just like Lorelai Gilmore. “I need coffee in an IV” has become my new motto since I started working full time.

There are times when I do worry about my daily coffee consumption, but one study has certainly reassured me.

Researchers in Germany have discovered that drinking four cups of coffee a day is actually good for your heart.

The team shared that caffeine helps protect blood vessels.

The study, which was published in PLOS Biology, stated that caffeine boosts the production of the p27 protein that protects and regenerates heart cells.

"Our results indicate a new mode of action for caffeine, one that promotes protection and repair of heart muscle through the action of mitochondrial p27,” said study author, Professor Judith Haendeler.

"These results should lead to better strategies for protecting heart muscle from damage,” he added.

There are numerous other benefits when it comes to drinking a Cup of Joe such as boosting cognitive function and protecting against type 2 diabetes.

Experts recommend drinking two to three cups of coffee each day, or if you’re like me then feel free to channel your inner Lorelai Gilmore and drink all the coffee!

We've seen our fair share of mad fitness trends here at SHEmazing– but this one really takes the biscuit, or should we say bun?

Introducing Hot Dog Water, the new health food trend involving the bottling of water used to make Hot Dogs. Yep, it's as weird as it sounds.

Debuting the latest health revolution in Vancouver, the fancily packaged Hot Dog Water can help you lose weight, increase brain function and look younger.

“We’ve created a recipe, having a lot of people put a lot of effort into research and a lot of people with backgrounds in science really creating the best version of Hot Dog Water that we could,” Hot Dog Water CEO Douglas Bevans told Global News.

At the steep price of $38 (€25) a bottle, the water is compatible with the Keto diet, gluten-free, rich in sodium and a source of electrolytes.

But what about the all-important science behind it?

“There’s a fair bit of it that is too science-y for me, but from what I understand from the specialists here working on it, it’s this idea of like-likes-like,” Bevan continued.

“So the protein of the Hot Dog Water helps your body uptake the water content, and the sodium and all the things you’d need post-workout.”

Sounds too good to be true? That's because it is.

At the bottom of the impressive information sign contains the fine print- it was all a lie. The whole thing was an elaborate prank to get people to assess the pseudo-science used by health food companies.

“Hot Dog Water in its absurdity hopes to encourage critical thinking related to product marketing and the significant role it can play in our purchasing choices," it reads.

In real life, Bevans is a tour operator and artist and said that the Hot Dog Water was a response to the  “snake oil salesmen” of health marketing.

“It’s really sort of a commentary on product marketing, and especially sort of health-quackery product marketing,” he said.

“From the responses, I think people will actually go away and reconsider some of these other $80 bottles of water that will come out that are ‘raw’ or ‘smart waters,’ or anything that doesn't have any substantial scientific backing but just a lot of pretty impressive marketing.”

That's not even the weirdest part fo this story- it's that some people ACTUALLY bought it.

“They’ve been drinking it for hours,” he said. “We have gone through about 60 litres of real hot dog water.”

Wow. Just wow.

We all know that being a student in Ireland is not cheap, especially if you have to move out of home to attend your chosen course. Not including fees, you have rent to pay, books and food to buy, and you also have to have some sort of a social life, and it all adds up – pretty quickly. €11,829 to be exact.

To help those starting third level in September, DIT has released its annual Cost of Living Guide for students 2018-19. The guide is designed to help those starting higher education this year, with tips and advice for students on how to cut costs on housing, travel and other day-to-day expenses.

According to the guide, the costs of living for students living away from home is a staggering €11K. This includes rent at €430 a month, food at €169 a month, student charge at €333 and a measly €40 on clothes and medical.

To help families with the ever-increasing cost, Dr Brian Gormley, Head of Life at DIT, is urging all students and parents to ensure they are getting their full entitlements.

"It's clear from talking to students and their families that it is not widely known that you can get tax relief on college fees paid," he said.

"Less than 12% of students claim back tax, and for full-time undergraduates, that figure is lower (7%). If you are paying for more than one student in full-time education, you can claim tax relief on the student charge for the second or subsequent children. Also, if you are paying tuition fees, either for a post-graduate programme, a part-time programme or for repeating the year, you may be entitled to tax back. We estimate that Irish families are missing out on millions of unclaimed tax relief."

And even if you're only entitled to a small amount back, every little helps.

We can all admit we’ve all had that moment where we had a good, long cry whilst listening to one of Adele’s songs. There have been many rainy mornings where we dramatically wept to Someone Like You, and plenty of nights out where we sang Hello into a wine bottle. Adele’s music has been the soundtrack to many women’s lives for years.

We have been huge fans of the Grammy winner since she released her first album 19 all the way back in 2008.

It’s been a decade since the Water Under The Bridge singer stormed the charts with her first album, but there’s no stopping Adele just yet.

Rumour has it the singer is set to release a brand new album in 2019.

According to reports, the Chasing Pavements songstress has been in talks with Sony about working on a new album.

It is understood that Adele is hoping to head to the studio later this summer, where she will write a wave of chart-topping hits.

A source shared: “She’s back in the UK and intends to write here. A number of studio musicians have been approached to work with her and she’s already penned some of the songs.”

The new album is rumoured to be released next Christmas. We are beyond excited. If anyone needs us we’ll be singing along to Make You Feel My Love for the foreseeable future.
