Back in 1818, Mary Shelley published Frankenstein anonymously. Female authors weren’t respected 200 years ago, but today they are amongst some of the most successful writers that grace the shelves of bookshops around the world.

Women like J.K Rowling, Emily Bronte, Sylvia Plath, Maya Angelou and Margaret Atwood will forever be remembered for their wonderful words. They are historical icons in the literary world and have paved the way for many female authors.

There was a point in history when women’s voices were silenced, but we are now louder than ever.

Scarlet Curtis has perfectly captured the strength of women today with her book Feminists Don’t Wear Pink (And Other Lies.)

The Pink Protest co-founder hopes to bridge the gap between the feminist hashtags and scholarly texts in this honest and raw collection of women’s stories.

She enlisted the help of some of the most empowering contributors including Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Jameela Jamil, Chimwemwe Chiweza, Dolly Alderton, Adwoa Aboah and Beanie Feldstein.

Feminists Don’t Wear Pink (And Other Lies) isn’t about learning how to be a ‘perfect’ feminist. It’s about reading the stories of our fellow sisters.

The stories shared in this gripping collection of essays are as diverse as the list of contributors.

“This is not a guide on how to be the perfect feminist, nor is it a full or adequate interpretation of one of the most complex movements in global history. This book is a collection of women’s stories,” author Scarlet Curtis commented.

Royalties of each copy sold will go to Girl Up, an initiative hosted by the United Nations Foundation.

We all know that fitness tracker apps are the way of the future – and can help you to maintain an optimum health level by getting your steps in for the day and getting enough sleep at night.

However, the flat, featureless watch faces can be a little off-putting to those with particular sartorial standards.

Luckily, accessories expert Parfois has come up with a solution for this – a fitness tracking watch with a classic, minimalist watch face.

If you've been put off buying a fitness watch because of their appearance, you're in luck.

The Activity Watch is a smart watch without being obvious – and looks cute and discrete while monitoring your daily activity, letting you take snaps on your phone, and showing you your notifications and calls.

This watch should be used alongside the PARFOIS Activity app which connects to your smartphone through Bluetooth.

The Activity Watch €95.99.

It's here that you can see all the data about your body and it's activity from the day.

You can assess how many hours of sleep you have had, review the amount of calories you burned and how far you have walked in both steps and distance.

You can also set personal goals using the app, and your watch will keep track while you try and achieve them.

The watch will be available in store and online 19th September.

Blood cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer-related death in Ireland.

29% of people who care for a loved one with cancer contribute the same amount of hours as a full time job or more. Of these devoted family members, 22% are also working a paid full or part time role.

The pressures placed on loved ones to provide for their diagnosed family member is overwhelming, and the Make Blood Cancer Visible campaign (a collaboration between the Irish Cancer Society and various other cancer organisations) wants to change that.

“It is of the utmost importance that people who are providing this vital support for people with blood cancer, find the time they need for themselves and to ensure that they are getting the care that they need to help them during this stressful time”, said Mary Kelly, Chair of Multiple Myeloma Ireland.

91% of people living with blood cancer felt the care they received was highly important to them. So, dedicated campaigners are trying to generate more awareness of blood cancers to support those affected by the disease.

Make Blood Cancer Visible campaign ambassador Louise McSharry said, “I know from my own blood cancer journey, how much my husband Gordon’s help and support meant to me and how important it is for people going through diagnosis and treatment to have the support of partners, relatives and friends to help them through this scary and difficult time.”

What exactly is blood cancer?

Blood cancer is an umbrella term for cancers that affect the blood, bone marrow and lymphatic system. Most types of blood cancer are rare, life-threatening conditions with small patient populations. There are over 140 different types of blood cancers, which can be classified into three main groups, leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Together, they comprise nearly 10 percent of all cancers, with more than 2,000 people across Ireland diagnosed annually.

Almost two-thirds of cancer carers receive no support on how to carry out their role. They are left on their own to figure out what may be the best diet, household environment, or medical tactics for their affected loved one.

Make Blood Cancer Visible campaign launched a series of information videos to provide practical advice and support for people living with blood cancer and their carers. Drawing on advice from medical experts, the series addresses emotional wellbeing for carers and patients, diet and nutrition, and advice for carers.

The journey for people living with blood cancers can be different to those with solid tumour cancers due to the many types of blood cancers and different treatment options available. Some cases require immediate treatment, while others may never require treatment. Instead, they’ll be called for regular blood tests and appointments to monitor the situation in a period known as ‘watch and wait’ until the disease progresses, and treatment may become necessary.

Averil Power, CEO of the Irish Cancer Society said, “We would urge people living with blood cancer and their carers to access the information videos on our website to provide them with the additional support and information that they may need. The Irish Cancer Society provides a specialist Cancer Nurseline on 1800 200 700 and our website cancer.ie outlines our expert cancer information and support services that are available, including our Daffodil Centres in 13 major hospitals nationwide.”

We don’t need to be told to look after to our faces. This is where the vast majority of people at least cleanse. The rest of the body, however, is often neglected when it shouldn’t be. There are plenty of skin concerns that are more likely to appear on the rest of the body than on the face, such as keratosis pilaris (more commonly known as chicken skin), dry, scaly skin and cellulite.

If you want to see results when it comes to concerns of the body, you need to be using results-driven body products!

Chicken Skin aka Keratosis Pilaris

Keratosis pilaris, KP, or chicken skin, is usually found on the back of the arms but it can actually be found anywhere on the body. It looks like very small reddish, pinkish or flesh-coloured dots and has a bumpy texture. It is incredibly common amongst Irish hoomans… In fact, it may be the reason we’re so fond of a cardigan.

KP is caused by an overproduction of keratin, a key skin protein, which means that there is a traffic jam within the pore, leading to the signature bumps. This isn’t a one-time issue – this is how your skin operates so it needs a helping hand to shift things out of the pore.

Taking vitamin A and omega supplements will help to ease your KP as well as cleansing the area with an exfoliating acid wash!

Dry, Scaly Body Skin

Dryness or a scaly appearance or texture to the skin is a sign that you’re lacking in essential fatty acids (omegas). Omegas boost your skin’s barrier function and hydrate from the inside out so if you’re prone to “elephant elbows”, make sure you’re getting them into you.

Cellulite

Cellulite happens to a majority, not a minority, of hoomans. It is incredibly common, especially in us women. You cannot completely banish cellulite per se but you can improve blood circulation and lymphatic drainage through body brushing. I body brush on the daily and I see an improvement when I’m doing it versus when I’m not doing it.

Eating healthy food rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals doesn’t help with cellulite directly. However, nutrient-rich food assists our body in the creation of collagen and aids skin cells in protecting themselves which can have a knock on effect when it comes to the formation of cellulite. Think about how you’re fuelling your body!

Jennifer’s debut book, “The Skin Nerd: Your Straight-Talking Guide To Feeding, Protecting & Respecting Your Skin”, is out now, available from Eason and Dubray Books! For more information on how to look after the skin on your body, join the Nerd Network!

The stunning piece is from Massimo Dutti.

And, don't you know that the 32-year-old is not apologising for how good she feels for getting out and about.

In the captioned, the model said: "It feels nice to be able to dress up and feel comfortable in my old clothes again! Thank you for all the lovely comments yesterday, they really picked me up."

"To the Mummy shamers out there, get a life. I’m not sorry I’m out and about feeling good, I'm the happiest I’ve ever been! Probably the most tired I’ve ever been too but it’s more than worth it."

Serious eye roll – it's a sad day that people are such a strong desire to comment on Vogue's choice to go back to work. – She's a boss and owning her role as a mum.

And may we point out that not one person commented on the fact that new dad, Spencer was out at an event yesterday – not that we are criticising him, just highlighting the double standard.

Regardless of the negativity, Vogue looks unbelievable and we can't wait for more looks.

This year’s Christmas panto is going to gas.

Polly and the Magic Lamp pokes fun at the Disney classic Aladdin with one of the most hilarious casts to ever hit Ireland’s theatres.

Mrs Brown Boys Rory Cowan will be playing Polly, the main star of the show.

He will be joined by Fair City’s Ryan Andrews, pop artist Jake Carter, Dancing with the Stars Erin McGregor, and West End star Rob Vickers.

And today another big name has confirmed his part in the upcoming, fun-filled panto as well…

“HOWAYA GENIE”, he joked. “Beyond excited to be playing the Genie in this year’s panto! I’m not gonna lie, I nearly [sh*t] me-self when I got the call.

“And to be sharing the stage with a PHENOM group of people is a mahoosive cherry on top. Can’t wait to see some of me Moira’s in the audience – Bridie O’Donoghue will be sickened!

“It’s going to be a fabulous festive season, gals.”

Erin was equally thrilled sharing the news as well.

“Such a great cast to get to work with. The first question everyone asked me after DWTS was “so what’s next?“ I honestly never knew.

“I just believed if I turned up with an open mind and a willingness to work that the right thing would appear .. ALWAYS BELIEVE, it’s never too late.”

We are so excited for Polly and the Magic Lamp to make its Christmas debut.

The show will run from December 21st until January 6th, and we cannot wait to see it.

Katherine Heigl documented the cutest date night ever yesterday.

The actress has been swamped with her new role in the drama series Suits and was in desperate need for some one-on-one time with her hubby Josh Kelly.

The happy couple had an intimate evening enjoying tasty eats, sipping fruity cocktails, and enjoying relaxing foot massages.

“Happy Thursday! I had the day off from Suits and took full advantage of my man Josh Kelly being in town for a visit,” the mum said.

“First stop, gin and tonics at my favourite English Pub, the Oxley Public House. Next, foot massages at a nearby spa, then martinis and perfecting my sexy pout at the Hazelton Hotel bar and finally a cheese plate perfectly made by my hubby.”

"It was most definitely one of those heavenly days to savour and remember!"

And from their fun-filled photos, it looks like they had a fabulously romantic night together.

The two are all smiles as they bask in their date night celebrations, cherishing the love that has only grown stronger of the years.

The parenting pair recently celebrated their ten-year wedding anniversary, and Katherine wrote a hilarious and touching tribute to her husband to commemorate the marriage milestone

“When the whole world falls into disarray and nothing makes sense to me he is my shelter, my safe harbour. When self-doubt and self-loathing creep into my soul he is my champion, my number one fan,” the Grey’s Anatomy star gushed.

How sweet! The dynamic duo share so much love for one another.

We are happy that Katherine and Josh were able to snag some time away from their routines to spend a much-needed romantic evening together.

We are always in awe of the incredible work Pieta House do. The charity has helped so many people cope with their mental health disorders and overcome some of the darkest moments in their lives.

In October, the charity will run one of it’s greatest campaigns to date. Feel Good Week will bring people together to remind themselves of how good they can feel and raise vital funds.

Feel Good Week will take place from October 20 to 27.

The aim is to help people #FindtheFeeling through a nationwide campaign of wellness, mindfulness, active, social and fun events. All you have to do is get together with your nearest and dearest and spread positive vibes by hosting a Feel Good event.

There are so many different things you can do during Feel Good Week, but we decided to conjure up the top five things that always lift our spirits.

1: Dance it out: Meredith Grey and Cristina Yang shared this wonderful piece of advice with us on Grey’s Anatomy. If you’re feeling a bit low or sluggish and need to lift your spirits then stick on ABBA or Taylor Swift or whatever cheesy music tickles your fancy and just dance away the negativity with your sisters or your co-workers.

2: Breakfast morning: There’s nothing we love more than breakfast food. Seeing a table full of strawberries, croissants, yoghurts, grapes, and pain au chocolat is our idea of heaven. Host a breakfast morning at your office and encourage your colleagues to step away from their desk for even ten minutes and natter to one another over a cup of coffee instead of through email.

3: Embrace the nostalgia: Something as simple as watching The Little Mermaid can spark positive memories so go back in time and curl up on the sofa with a cup of tea and your favourite Disney film playing on the TV. Studies claim nostalgia is good for the mind because it can boost both your energy and spirit.

4: Get outside: The last thing you want to do after a draining day at work is to go outside and be at one with nature, we’d much rather be at one with Netflix. However, even our lazy, sloth-like selves know just how good you feel after spending some time outside.

It can help you unwind and let go of the stress of the day. Why don’t you call up your old school friends and go for a walk along the pier?

5: Host a mystery book swap: It’s like going on a blind date, but with books. Call up your fellow bookworms and exchange your favourite book- but there’s a twist. Participants need to wrap up their books so the cover is hidden.

Think of it as Secret Santa for book lovers. The mystery element helps make it that little bit more exciting.

Are you ready to #FindTheFeeling? It’s easy to take part. You can register your fundraiser FREE on www.pieta.ie/feelgood.

Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother have officially been axed by Channel 5.

The iconic reality TV shows changed the TV landscape when the first season aired in the year 2000 on Channel 4.

Channel 5 picked up the show in 2011, where it has remained until the final season – they tweeted their 153,000 followers: 'It's time for this game to end. The final series of Big Brother starts tonight at 9pm.'

Rylan Clark Neal also shared with his 1.5million followers: 'After six years working on one of the most iconic shows on television I’m saddened to hear the news Big Brother isn’t returning.'

'It has been the biggest privilege being a housemate, a winner and a host on my favourite show on the television.'

'I hope one day Big Brother will return but my focus now, as with the rest of the team, is to make our last series the best yet.'

The show has faced major criticism in its 18-year run, but has always been popular among it's viewers.

However, with rival show's like Love Island to compete with, Big Brother has seen a steady decline in ratings over the past few years.

Last summer's launch drew an average of 2.2 million viewers – 200,000 less than the previous year.

Both the civilian and celebrity versions have had huge success, relaunching the careers of faded stars and catapulting nobodies into the limelight.

Any bets the series starting tonight will be as outrageous as ever.
