Female masturbation has long faced stigma, yet male masturbation is socially accepted as normal, and even healthy. Yet the advantages and benefits of self-pleasure for women can be easily overlooked.
A new study by TENGA took a dive into the world of self-lovin', and highlighted the impacts it has on everyone around the globe.
The sex toy company surveyed 10,000 people from nine different countries worldwide to investigate how much masturbation has impacted their lives. The result? It's pretty damn important to people.
According to the results, 91 percent of people in the United Kingdom indulge in masturbation, or have at one point or another. That's around 60 million people, which is impressive.
Unfortunately the survey didn't use Irish people as participants, but we reckon the UK is close enough of an indicator.
When the surveyed population were asked why they masturbate, they responded with three dominant reasons; to satisfy their horniness, to achieve sexual pleasure or to relax/relieve stress.
Other reasons were boredom, to help them sleep, to give them body confidence, to become a better sexual partner or because their partner didn't want to have sex with them at the time.
Other research showed that British men and LGBTQ+ are more likely than other group to masturbate, and men and younger generations tend to start younger – around the age of 13.
93 percent of men said that they had masturbated before, while 88 percent of women claimed to have indulged themselves in self-pleasure before. Women tended to start at the later age of 15.
The stereotype is that women don't masturbate as much as men, but science has disproved this on multiple occasions. Girls love self-love, face the pleasurable facts.
Women who currently use a sex toy were found to be more satisfied with almost every aspect of their sex lives than women who don’t – especially when it comes to quality of masturbation and frequency of orgasm.
When asked how often they masturbate, 61 percent of British participants confirmed they do it at least weekly – a greater share than in almost every other country surveyed.
Those UK people surveyed said that they are horniest in the month of July (summer lovin'), touch themselves most between 7:30 – 11:30 p.m. and, normally take to their bedrooms to do it.
Sexual therapists and health experts agree that masturbation has many benefits, including letting go of sexual shame, better sex, improved body image and a stronger libido. It also releases stress-reducing endorphins in women.
64 percent of Brits surveyed consider masturbation to be a form of self care or therapy, and 52 percent think it impacts wellness or state-of-mind.
While men tend to orgasm all or most of the time, women are significantly less likely to orgasm as frequently.
Nearly 80-90 percent of people find masturbation to have a positive effect across most aspects of their lives, including their mood, health, energy and productivity levels, and their relationships.
Among the 41 percent of Brits who have regular masturbation routines, men usually watch porn but women prefer to use their imaginations. Interestingly, British fantasise about previous partners more often than their current one. Hmm…
Finally, when asked what celebrities were fantasised about, the most common answers were Jennifer Lawrence, Tom Hardy, Mia Khalifa, Christian Grey, Johnny Depp and Emma Watson.
Porn is something that people watch, be it when they're single or in a relationship.
And while many admit to using it to satisfy their urges, how damaging is it to people's sex lives?
Can you watch it without consequences?
This recent survey spoke to more than 1,200 men and women to analyze how porn plays into their sex lives.
The findings were…surprising, to say the least.
It seems that 1-in-4 men would rather be having sex with the people they see in porn, and this is compared to just 7% of women.
Shocking or duh?
As well as that, even when lacking arousal for their partner, 37% of women will only watch porn once-a-week; however, 39% of men that share those feelings watch porn every day.
Worrying figures show that more than half of women have an easier time achieving orgasm while watching porn than they do while having sex – what is going on guys?!
The ease of access to porn is a cause for concern.
What about couples watching it together – does it help or hinder their action between the sheets?
Sixty percent said that they do, but a quarter of men said they'd rather have sex with the individuals in the porn they viewed than their real-life partners.
What's strange about it all is that the more men watched porn, the less likely to be turned on by their partners they were and the more frequently women watched porn, the more likely they were to feel aroused by their partners.
It seems that consuming porn is a slippery slope – maybe more of us should give our partners the time and attention they deserve in the bedroom, and leave watching sex on the screen altogether.

We love a good, Irish-owned and female led company. Especially one that encourages empowerment when it comes to your sexuality.
Sex Siopa is one of the best retailers around for catering for all genders and body types, and sells brilliant silicone sex toys and organic lubricants.
The multi-award winning, health and design focused online sex shop stocks only bodysafe toys and uses discreet packaging.
The founder, Shawna Scott, began the company when she struggled to find the kind of shopping experience she personally wanted for her pleasure, and as a result Sex Siopa treats every customer with respect and compassion.
Unsurprisingly, this glorious shop is stocking one of the best hands-free remote controlled vibrators in town…and you have GOT to try it.
The Svakom Elva egg vibrator is whisper quiet, waterproof and has five different vibration settings for every level of intensity your heart (and your g-spot) desires.
The USB rechargeable egg is ideal if you enjoy internal g-spot stimulation or if you want to give control of your pleasure over to your partner.
The Svakom Elva is made out of silky, matte silicone and feels incredible both internally and externally while making minimal noise. The miniature size also means that it's perfect for travelling in a discreet manner.
The remote comes with batteries and gives you 2.5 hours of play with only an hour-and-a-half of charging, so the technology is fairly epic. Seeing as it's waterproof, why not try it in the shower?
The toy is super easy to clean, and we advise you to use a good water-based lubricant like Sliquid Sassy or Yes WB.
You literally won't find a better couples sex toy, or solo pleasure tool. 10/10 would recommend to a horny friend, get yours on the Sex Siopa website for just €80.
Women's Aidhave launched a new guide on safety orders for young women who are experiencing abuse in their relationships, due to new laws being introduced.
The legislation brought in at the beginning of this year allows women who are going through dating abuse to apply for Safety and Protection orders.
Women's Aid are instigating the guide on Valentine's Day as part of the #TooIntoYou campaign to emphasise the darker side of love.
60% of abuse starts before the age of 25. Today, on Valentine's Day, we launch our #TooIntoYou campaign for young women including a NEW GUIDE to Safety Orders – now available to people experiencing abuse in dating relationships. Check out the free guide https://t.co/5MKQmB8T9apic.twitter.com/YSmlMoOGZH
RTÉ's Can't Stop Dancing presenter Bláthnaid Treacy is also urging young women and men to "know the signs of dating abuse", especially because 60 percent of abuse in relationships begins before the age of 25.
Women's Aid are a national organisation which provides vital information and support to women experiencing dating abuse and domestic violence. Their #TooIntoYou campaign aims to spread much-needed awareness on the topic.
#TooIntoYou uses social media and poster advertising to strive for the spread of information from February 14 until March 8 (International Women's Day).
New laws brought in at the start of 2019 under the Domestic Violence Act 2018 allow women to apply for important Safety and Protection laws.
Today are calling attention to the darker side of relationships at this time that the #TooIntoYou campaign will have a high impact. We are asking – what part of love is abuse? If you are concerned about your relationship take our quiz and read the signs https://t.co/kLjf4jMVjXpic.twitter.com/Kwjo9WRBU7
However, the organisation believes that many young women are still in the dark about the change and how to get the necessary protection, which is why Women's Aid ae bringing in the 'Guide to Safety Orders in Dating Relationships' online today.
Spotting the 10 key danger signs of dating abuse and providing information to combat online stalking and digital abuse is of imperative importance for women in Ireland today.
Margaret Martin, Director of Women’s Aid says:
"1 in 5 women in Ireland experience abuse in relationships and in a national survey on domestic abuse in Ireland, almost 60 percent of those who had experienced severe abuse in intimate relationships first experienced it when they were under the age of 25."
A ten year domestic homicide review was due to be published in February 2017.
NWCI tonight expressed serious concerns about the length of time which was elapsed since the review was announced. We urgently need the findings of this review to be published https://t.co/bs49KdNzkk
"A stark reminder of this risk is that 1 in every 2 women, aged between 18-25, killed in Ireland since 1996 were murdered by their boyfriends or exes," Martin concluded.
The campaign is being launched on Valentine's Day to highlight the hidden reality of many young women's relationships, despite the fact that today is traditionally associated with love and romance.
Martin's goal for today, is to ask the hard questions; "We are clearly asking – what part of love is abuse?" She spoke directly to victims and survivors; “You are not alone in feeling something isn't right with your relationship."
