ice-cream

We've been enjoyed the wonderfully warm weather as of late – but for those who can't decide between a cool glass of beer and a cool ice-cream, one company may have come up with the perfect solution.

Step forward Drunken Dairy – the maker of the likes of the white chocolate and Malibu White Knight (abv 2.3 percent); the gin, lime and tonic GLT sorbet (abv 5.1 percent), and the cookies and cream with vodka OMG (abv 4 percent).

Set up in the spring of 2013, the makers attend food markets and events in London – giving out plenty of free samples to curious bystanders.

They also cater for corporate events, festivals, weddings and parties, though sadly the product has yet to be widely rolled-out outside of London.

An added bonus? The alcohol in the ice cream and sorbets actually lowers the freezing point – meaning it’s naturally soft scoop and tastes pretty amazing straight from the freezer.

The new flavours are going down well at @east_dulwich_picturehouse! Happy 1st birthday

The brand has just this week moved into a bigger, better premises – so expansion is very much already underway.

And until the Drunken Dairy lands in a fridge closer to home, we'll just have to keep our desserts and our alcohol separate.

Well, it has been one of the hottest weeks that gloriously unpredictable Ireland has basked in a long time.

And suffice to say that ice-cream sales have been through the roof as countless numbers of us cool down in the heat.

Now, one eagle-eyed observer has taken to Reddit to share a snap that some online commentators have found controversial.

Entitled, 'the gardai just bought an ice-cream for someone in the back of the van,' upon closer inspection, it seems that the image shows members of the Irish Prison Service at work.

With their high-security van open at the rear, it seems that the guards are handing someone incarcerated there an ice-cream.

One of the two visible prison services personnel can also be be seen sporting standard-issue handcuffs on their belt.

There was a mixed response to the post on Reddit, with some users feeling an ice-cream is an inappropriate treat for a prisoner en route to or from a court hearing or jail.

The image was shared yesterday, although there is no suggestion as to what part of Ireland the photo was taken.

Plain old vanilla might be the default option when it comes to ice cream, but it seems this summer’s coolest treat trend has gone to the dark side for inspiration.

In between the endless stream of melting chocolate balls, icy Frappuccinos and rainbow coloured doughnuts which have come to dominate Instagram’s food porn network, you may have noticed a very unusual looking iced dessert known as black ice cream.

Pictures tagged #blackicecream show scooped and whipped ice creams served in a variety of ways, all of which are black in colour and seem to be popping up around the world.

The Tech Times has reported that Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream shop in New York is one vendor playing its role in the charcoal-coloured trend.

According to the site, Morgenstern’s black ice cream is Black Coconut Ash flavour which combines dark chocolate ice cream, squid-ink based food dye and a new flavour made from the “charred and processed remains of a coconut shell”.

And as if having black ice cream isn’t cool enough, it has been suggested that the activated charcoal in the recipe can help detox the body so you could say black ice cream is actually good for you.

It's officially summer season, and summer season means summer pints and summer G&Ts. Ooops.

It's safe to say when the sun hits we can get a little carried away, and end up with a hangover that goes on for daaaays.

Some of us turn to a greasy fry-up or a crazy smoothie to keep the demons in our heads and bellies at bay – But, over in Asia, they have a very different approach and we totally love it.

Ice cream. Yep, ICE CREAM.

Grapefruit flavoured ice cream bars have been introduced in South Korea and claim to totally reverse the symptoms of a hangover.

The wonderful ice cream bars, known as Gyeondyo-bar (or the hang-in-there bar) contain an ingredient from raisin tree extract, which has been known to cure hangovers in Korea since the 17th century.

It may be a while until they hit our shores, but imagine the relief of eating an ice cream AND curing your hangover all at once? Yes, please…

Vienetta might be pretty old school, but it has such a lovely touch of retro glamour that it's one dessert we can't bear to say goodbye to.

Waves of vanilla or mint ice-cream with thin layers of chocolate in between – does it get any better than that? Well yes, because Romantica, but aside from that we're all about the V.

And this video, filmed on the Vienetta production line , is just so strangely mesmerising that we reckon we could watch it on repeat all day.

First, a layer of melted chocolate is painted over sheets of ice-cream…

Then more ice-cream is added in waves. The waves. LOOK AT THE WAVES.

Plus the obligatory top layer of ice-cream…

And a delicate spray of chocolate *faints*

Then finally, the Massive Vienetta is sliced into lots of Regular Vienettas.

Watch the full video here. Be warned though, it's addictive, and you'll most likely want a large slice of Vienetta afterwards.

There are a fair few iced treats that Irish people hold dear to their hearts – Choc Ices, Orange Splits and Brunches to name just a few.

But one Cork man’s dessert was left lacking earlier this week, and he wasn’t going to keep quiet about it.

Darryl O’Connell, from Goleen, County Cork, took to HB’s Facebook page on Monday to voice his concerns at “the severe reduction on the sprinkles applied” to his “personal favourite”, the trusty Brunch ice cream – and their reply was pretty amazing.

After “after a long day working on the farm pulling beet” he opened one of HB’s “delicious ice creams” to find it looking a little sadder than usual.

You can see how strongly Darryl felt from his post here:

Dear HB ice creams,I am a loyal customer of your delicious ice creams, My personal favourite being the brunch. In…

Unfortunately this doesn’t seem to  be an isolated incident.

However, Miley seems pretty satisfied with her exceedingly sprinkled Brunch.

Thankfully, HB have since replied to Daryl’s post and promise they’re going to investigate. Phew!

This isn’t the first time that our favourite childhood treats have let us down. In recent years, Irish chocolate-lovers seem to be coming across more and more cases of “shrinkflation”.

Take the drastic reduction in Quality Street size, for example:

Since that Summer is kinda, nearly here (go away cold weather), it's time to get excited for all the ice cream and ice pops we can stuff into our faces.

But Ben & Jerry's is welcoming its new ice cream sandwich to Ireland next month, and let's just say we'll be eating them all Summer long.

They are coming in two different flavours, Chocolate Fudge Brownie (YASS) and The Cookie Dough 'Wich which both sound as good as the other.

Now all we have to do is wait for the weather to turn around – but let's be honest, they look so good we'll probably eat them in the cold anyway.

It may be as cold as the freezers they store the ice cream in, but that won't stop us!

Jinny Joe's ice cream shop is already a favourite spot in Crumlin, but now they've taken their yummy ice cream to Meath Street in the City Centre.

The shop opened just last week and despite the cold weather, it hasn't stopped people from getting their ice cream fill.

They have everything from Oreo sundaes, Bounty bar sundaes, and even Ferrero Rocher sundaes.

And they're not skimpy either! Just look at all the mouth-watering toppings.

The owner of Jinny Joe's, Paul, told the Daily Edge that his shop differs to the rest due to its adventurous menu.

"We listen to the customers, and make the change. Kids are so creative, we make them what they want, and of course all the tasting is done personally," he said.

He also regarded his menu as an open book, which he makes up everyday on a chalkboard, rather than a set sign.

"Next week for example, we've got an ice cream pizza." Did you hear that?! Ice cream PIZZA.

"It's the usual pizza base, topped with nutella and an ice cream base instead of cheese and tomato sauce. Customers can then pick the topping to go on top."

It's the stuff of dreams, ladies.

You can think twice if you think your love for grilled cheese is just a random quirk!

Apparently, our food habits say a lot about who we are, with subtle differences in taste dictated by our upbringing.

Scientists are increasingly linking our food preferences with our personality traits, so if you want to find out what your love for chocolate means, read on:

If you love grilled cheese…

You're seductive, charitable and worldly.

Research carried out by dating site, Skout, quizzed 4,600 people on their diet, bedroom habits and lifestyle and what they found out was quite interesting.

The survey found that 81 percent of cheese lovers donate time, money or food to those in need. And 84 percent enjoy travelling compared to only 78 percent of people who don't like cheese.

And if you love a cheddar toastie in the evening, it also means you have a good time in the bedroom! They discovered that 73 percent of cheesy people have sex at least once a month, compared to only 63 percent of non-cheese lovers.

If you love chocolate…

You're selfless and good-natured.

A study carried out by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that people with a sweet tooth tend to have sweeter dispositions.

The research found that those who like chocolate are more likely to volunteer to help another person. They're also more agreeable and even-tempered than those without a sweet tooth.

If you love pepperoni pizza…

You're extroverted and argumentative

A survey from the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation tested 500 adults on their preferred pizza topping.

The results found that people who like pepperoni on their pizza thrive when they're the centre of attention and are more likely to be extrovert than those who like other toppings.

They are also more likely to be argumentative and procrastinators, while those who like chicken as a topping are likely to be driven, assertive and competitive.

If you love curry…

You're a risk-taker.

Research by the University of Grenoble found that people who like spicy food are more likely to be financial, sexual and behavioural risk-takers.

Spice-lovers are also seen to be daring and adventurous and prove to work better in intense situations.

If you love ice-cream…

You're impulsive and idealistic.

If you're partial to vanilla ice-cream, you're likely to be dynamic and idealistic.

Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation used various tests to determine that ice-cream lovers are impulsive and rely on intuition more than logic. They are also seen as more emotionally expressive and work better in close relationships.

There are not many things worse than waiting than the horrible feeling of your longed for ice cream cone melting in your hands.

Ice cream treats are some of the best around, and kids big and small tend to be sent into an emotional tail spin when their chance at sugar-filled happiness rapidly melts away.

However, thanks to scientists from the Universities of Edinburgh and Dundee, this could be a thing of the past. Teams have been working together to come up with a recipe for ice cream that doesn’t melt and has less saturated fat.

They developed an ingredient that keeps ice cream colder for longer. Professor Cait MacPhee explains: ‘This is a natural protein already in the food chain. It’s already used to ferment some foods so it’s a natural product rather than being a ‘Frankenstein’ food.’

Doin' what the trendy kids do apparently #icecream #summer #45minslater

A photo posted by Food.com (@fooddotcom) on

She added that while it is not entire non-melting, it will allow the ice cream to remain stable for longer.

“By using this protein we’re replacing some of the fat molecules that are currently used to stabilise these oil and water mixtures so it can reduce the fat content, but it shouldn’t taste any different.”

So, we could soon be living in a world where our ice cream won’t melt, and it will be better for us? What a time to be alive!

The only catch is that while the breakthrough is surely going to be quite a hit around the world, we may have to wait another three to five years before it becomes part of our everyday lives.

We’ll just be over here counting down the days then.
