Yearly Archives: 2018

Easter break is here and we have welcomed it with open arms.

You may be a lucky college student with weeks off from lectures, or a girl boss who is constantly dreaming about bank holiday Monday.

Even though we love having a busy schedule we adore the thought of curling up with a book with an Easter egg to our left and a cup of tea to our right.

We’ve conjured up a list of the books you just have to delve into this Easter. Bookworms, enjoy these joyous tales.

The Bestseller: Letters To My Daughters by Emma Hannigan.

A post shared by Karen (@carrie.moloney) on

This novel is jam-packed with excitement, heartache, and shocking twists. There is so much going on in Emma Hannigan’s Letters To My Daughters you won’t be able to put it down. The book follows the lives of the Brady sisters who are all living drastically different lives, from the wild sister who lives in LA, to the sister whose husband and daughter gang up on her, making her life miserable, and the eldest sister who owns a string of successful bridal shops, but can’t help but feel like something is missing from her life, despite her booming business. The tale looks at the strained relationship between the sisters and their busy mum Martha.

This book is ideal for those of you who love a drama-filled tale stocked full of family drama.

The Old Favourite: Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding

The classic chick-lit novel stole the hearts of many women back in the 90s, and it is still one of the most loved novels today. The tale is written in the style of the personal diary making it extremely easy to read. You’ll gobble this novel up in one sitting. If you’re unfamiliar with the legend that is Bridget Jones, she is a thirty-year-old singleton living in London, who has set new year resolutions that every girl will relate to- lose weight, improve career, stop drinking and find a boyfriend.

This book is the perfect antidote if you’re feeling a little bit glum. Bridget Jones’s Diary will leave you crying with laughter and the diary-style makes the story that little bit more heartwarming.

The Biography: Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling

She may be busy starring alongside Oprah and Reese Witherspoon in A Wrinkle In Time, but prior to that role, Mindy Kaling penned one of the best biographies in a long time.

The actress opens up about her fears and worries and the doubts that fill many of our minds on a daily basis. Mindy’s honest words are so refreshing and endearing. The Office star shares her opinions on friendship, Hollywood and romance in this genius book.

This witty biography is bound to bring a smile to your face, even if you’re not a fan Mindy. She discusses the anxieties and worries we are often too afraid to talk about, and her openness is a real breath of fresh air.

The One Everyone Is Talking About: Almost Love by Louise O’Neill

Almost Love follows the complicated story of Sarah who falls for a man and sacrifices everything else in her life to be with him, even her job. Sarah and Matthew’s toxic relationship makes this a raw and gritty read.

This book will open your eyes to the scary reality of falling for the wrong person.

The long weekend is just around the corner and with so many amazing events due to take place around Dublin, staying in is not an option – (that is if you're not too busy devouring copious amounts of chocolate, of course).

From Whitney sing-alongs to mass pillow fights, here's our top five picks.

1. Beauty and the Beast Drive-In, March 31, Leopardstown

Retro Drive-in Movies are bringing the Disney magic this weekend, with a special screening of the iconic Beauty and the Beast.

Grab the girls, load up the car and prepare for the sing-a-long of your lives!

There'll be burgers, hot digs, pizza and popcorn available on site

Limited tickets are available here

2. Whitney vs Mariah Easter Sunday Special, April 1, MVP Dublin 8

Reckon you could give the queens of pop a run for their money?

The Sing Along Social is a zero-commitment choir designed for people who can't sing.

You don't have to practice, or even need to know the words. It's about singing along to your favourite tunes in the company of friends and strangers.

Doors at 7.30pm sharp and tickets are €9.00 online or €10.00 on the night.

3. North Side vs South Side Pillow Fight, April 1, Phoenix Park

It looks like the old rivalry is alive and well, as Dubliners from both sides of the Liffey meet for a massive pillow fight at 3pm in Phoenix Park.

Oh, the organisers have also planned a 'Grushie' afterwards – which, from my understanding is some kind of old tradition that involves throwing small coins on the ground for children to collect.

Sure, what else would you be doing on Easter Sunday?

4. Ted Fest Dublin, The Church Bar & Restaurant, Dublin 1

Is there anything to be said for saying another Ted Fest?

Awakening your inner Mrs. Doyle and celebrate the Easter weekend with a lovely cup of tea down at The Church Bar & Restaurant.

Guest are invited to dawn their holiest attire and participate in a world record attempt for the Largest Gathering of Characters from Father Ted.

There'll also be an interactive big screen quiz, Funland photo opportunities, drink special and prizes for the best dressed and best quiz team name.

Tickets are €45.00 for a table of four and are available here

Go on, go on, go on, go on!

5.Red Bull Music FREE GAFF

Did I hear someone say free gaff?

From cheeky cans to late night jams, there are few things in life more enjoyable than a humble house party.

Taking over a city-centre gaff for one spectacular weekend, FREE GAFF brings together Ireland's best musical talent all under one roof.

With a date for the referendum finally set, the conversation around the eight amendment is louder than ever.

As both sides prepare to kick off their campaigns, more and more influencers are beginning to voice their stance on the topic

Jen Morris, or Too Dolly Makeup as she's known to her followers online, recently broke her silence on the subject in an emotional Twitter thread, explaining how a personal battle with fertility shaped her and opinion, before subsequently changing her mind.

At just 17-years-old, Jen had her ovaries removed over fears that she would develop cancer in a matter of years.

Faced with the reality that she would never be able to have conceive a child, she admitted how she struggled to accept how someone could willingly make the decision to terminate a pregnancy.

Understandably, it took Jen a long time to disconnect her personal experience from the greater picture, admitting that for a time she thought she people were just "throwing a child away".

As the Easter weekend approaches, we can't help but dream about curling up on the sofa with a cup of tea in one hand and a giant Easter egg in front of us.

Seeing as the weather is due to be dreary and miserable this weekend, we are planning on making the most of our Netflix subscription.

We've got movie nights planned and a Gilmore Girls binge-session planned with the girls.

The thought of spending the bank holiday weekend in an overcrowded play-centre sounds like our worst nightmare, so you'll be delighted to hear that a very special show has been added to Netflix.

Awkward. #GBBO

Protests have been organised across the country today in the wake of the not-guilty verdict handed out by the jury to Paddy Jackson and his teammate Stuart Olding.

Blane McIlroy and Rory Harrison were also found not guilty of perverting the course of justice and withholding information.

Public opinion clearly shows an opposing view to the verdict, with the #IBelieveHer trending in Ireland since yesterday, and now thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets in opposition to the verdict.

Dads. They're gas characters altogether.

Between the terrible puns bashed out and every family gathering and their never-ending quest to make a show of you at the worst possible moments, we can always rely on our darling fathers to bring us back down to earth.

One woman who knows this all too well is Allison Barron, and her finance Levi Bliss.

Over the weekend, the couple shared one of the most special moments of their relationships when Levi got down on one knee and asked Allison to be his wife.

On first glance, everything looks absolutely perfect. The scenic landscape and gorgeous blue skies make for a storybook proposal. But of course, Allison's dad had different ideas.

In what can only be described as the ultimate dad stunt ever pulled, he decided to inject some humour into the situation.

Standing just up hill as his daughter makes one of the most important decisions of the life, her dad offered some helpful advice in the form of a large sign displaying the words "SAY NO".

And while this might seem like the worst possible time to crack a belter of a dad joke, Allison and Levi both agreed that it made the moment all the more special.

Speaking to BuzzFeed, she said: "We both know my dad so well, we got the joke right away and found it funny."

Sharing the charming moment on Twitter, Allison posted a photo of her dad holding the sign above his head, along with caption: "My dad had other ideas…"

The tweet has since gone insanely viral, and has become an early contender for meme of the year.

Oh, and just in case you were wondering, she ignored her dad's advice and said yes!

There's nothing like putting on a pair of rose-coloured glasses and taking a stroll down memory lane.

As much as we love being grown up queens, we have to admit, it was pretty amazing being a kid.

A recent poll of 2,000 adults in the UK found that an astounding 67 percent wished they could be a child again.

Same, tbh.

However, that doesn't necessarily mean the poll's participants want to grow up in the current era of Snapchat and Facebook.

In fact, 58 percent said that it was better to be a kid 'back in the day' because they didn't need technology to entertain themselves, the Daily Express reports.

As far as what makes us feel little twinges of nostalgia, school holidays topped the list of what adults miss from childhood.

There was nothing like those days of freedom where it felt like you could do absolutely anything!

Hot summers were the second most missed thing about being a kid, according to the survey commissioned by Hollywood Bowl.

Who doesn't yearn for those sunny days filled with swimming and slowly melting ice cream?

We've been waiting with bated breath to see who will be joining the new cast for series three of The Crown as Prince Philip.

After all, who has the acting chops to hold their own against Helena Bonham Carter (Princess Margaret) and Olivia Colman (Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth)?

Despite rumours that Hugh Laurie would be taking on the role, it's now been revealed that Tobias Menzies will be carrying on as Prince Philip after Matt Smith departs.

A post shared by Outlander (@outlander_starz) on

If you're a fan of Outlander then you'll recognise the 44-year-old actor as the heroine Claire's husband, Frank Randall, and his evil ancestor, Jonathan 'Black Jack' Randall.

As well, he played Edmure Tully in Game of Thrones – and that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his numerous acting credits!

Tobias is signed on to play the Duke of Edinburgh for series three and four of The Crown, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

He's certainly talented enough to bring Prince Philip to life on screen.

A post shared by Caitrionabalfe (@caitrionabalfe) on

The London-born actor was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance as the terrifying Black Jack in Outlander in 2016.

Besides Tobias' prolific television and film career, he's also an accomplished on the stage as well.

Not to mention the fact that he looks a fair bit like Prince Philip!

A post shared by Outlander (@outlander_starz) on

We are utterly thrilled to see him in the next two series of The Crown. Even though we may have to wait longer for the next series than previous ones (it's reportedly set to air in winter 2018 or early spring 2019), we're sure it will be worth the wait.

What do you think of Tobias Menzies as the new Prince Philip?

Well, at least it isn't another Kardashian emoji, right?

Yes, you read the headline correctly, Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton are soon to be made into emojis.

And we are here for it!

Created and by tech company DRKHORS, the new MeghanMojis and KateMojis will feature Meg and Kate in a range of outfits, with cheeky tag lines relevant to their lives.

Moving on…

There will be depictions of Kate Midz downing a glass of wine, and doing various other things that will be useful mid conversation.

As for Meghan, not much has been revealed just yet, but Prince Harry will feature in some form – and Kate will include William and the two kids. Naturally.

All good things come at a price – the emoji apps will be sold separately for £1.41 each.

Also, most excitingly DRKHORS is open to suggestions on their website :“What do you want to see Kate and Meghan doing in their emojis?”

OK, nobody panic, but the cast of Dawson's Creek have reunited and our inner 90s girls are screaming.

To celebrate the show's 20th anniversary, Entertainment Weekly got the old gang back together to talk about their favourite moments from the cult teen drama.

The magazine also treated us to four solo covers featuring lead actors Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, James Van Der Beek, and Michelle Williams, as well as one group cover, which really pulled on our nostalgic heart strings.

After making its debut in 1998, Dawson's Creek became and instant hit, and even produced one of the internet's most iconic memes, lest we forget.

The series acted as a springboard for its lead actors, with Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, James Van Der Beek and Michelle Williams all having enjoyed hugely successful careers in the entertainment industry.

Speaking fondly about her time on the series, Williams, now a four-time Oscar nominee, said: "I loved that we were able to get in there in those formative years for people. That's why people, I think, are so connected to it. When something affects you while you were growing up, it kind of stays in there forever."

"When you're so permeable and open and trying to figure out who you are and what's going on, whatever reaches you in those moments really becomes part of you."

However, those wishing for another instalment of the much-loved show shouldn't hold their breath. When asked if the characters would ever reunite on screen in an interview last January, show creator Kevin Williamson telling the Hollywood Reporter

"What would we do?! One of the reasons we did the finale five years in the future was to put a button on it. What would a reunion be? What would that look like? Why would you? I don't see it and I don't feel it. The finale was such a beautiful moment in time and the show was always meant to be a nostalgia piece."

The referendum on repealing the 8th amendment to the constitution will take place on May 25 2018.

It was speculated that this would be the date, but confirmation came today via Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy.

Earlier today, Simon Harris tweeted that 'the Referendum Bill has now passed all stages in Seanad Eireann.'

'Date for referendum can now be formally set.'

Senators voted 40 to 10 to allow the referendum to take place.

The referendum will come after months of political debate regarding the issue.

'I cannot close my eyes and block my ears to the fact that 3,265 of our citizens travelled to the UK in 2016 from every county in Ireland,' Mr Harris said previously.

'I cannot stand over a situation where the abortion pill is illegally accessed in this country and women, perhaps in the privacy of their own bedroom, in a lonely isolated place, [are] taking a pill without any medical supervision.'
