There are many stories surrounding the nightmare that can be online dating. There a lucky, and almost mythical few, who make it through unscathed and come out the other side with a shiny new relationship they couldn’t be happier about.

However, those seem to be few and far between. As a result, there are many blogs dedicated to dodgy Tinder dates and awkward coffee shop meetings.

No Bad Dates Just Good Stories is a Tumblr account dedicated to exactly that. Needless to say there are a number of stories to be found there that make us full-body cringe.

One of them in particular though is definitely in the running for worst date ever.

Lauren Crouch (who runs the Tumblr account) writes that her return to the dating did not go well, and that is putting it lightly.

The two met for coffee and he then invited her back to his place as he was expecting a delivery. She declined the offer and shortly afterwards was treated a series of the most awkward text messages ever.

Things just went further downhill from there:

Lauren, who says that she is a “huge” believer in women always offering to pay on dates was naturally less than impressed with his actions.

She wrote: “Yes you do decide yourself what to do with your money, and last night you decided to spend it on a coffee. I don’t come with a money back guarantee. Dates aren’t commodities.”

Now, and you thought your last blind date was less than stellar.

Okay, so we are not about to try and proclaim that consuming mass amounts of alcohol on a Saturday night is good for you, because we all know it's not. But drinking certain alcohol in moderation can have it's health perks.

It is too easy to believe the rumours that drinking red wine has its merits, but the latest research literally has us giddy with excitement. Scientists have revealed that drinking three glasses of champagne a week can actually help to prevent certain illnesses such as Alzheimer's and Dementia.

Well, in that case, pass the Moët!

Researchers at the University of Reading found that fruits used to make certain fancy champagnes can help to boost memory and battle certain illnesses.

Professor Jeremy Spencer told the Mail on Sunday that the "the results were dramatic".

"This research is exciting because it illustrates for the first time that moderate consumption of champagne has the potential to influence cognitive functioning such as memory," he said.

That's good enough for us! It's time to pop open a bottle of fizz and toast to our good health.

We apologise in advance for ruining your productivity #goals for today, but once you set your eyes on Missy Elliott's new music video, you'll have to watch it all day long.

Totally mesmerising and addictive, Missy's hair, make-up and outfits just ooze coolness. What's more is that Pharrell makes a cameo appearance… as a puppet.

The song also has a catchy hook which seems to be targeted at one certain pop star: "The dance you doing is dumb/ How they do where you from/ Stickin' out your tongue girl/ But you know you're too young." Hmmm…

The single means that a full album is likely on the way (yes!).

Her most recent album, The Cookbook, was out in 2005 and the last video she was in was Shake Your Pom Pom in 2008. Now go forth and watch it a million times.

Once only affordable to the rich and famous, velvet is now one seriously classic and versatile fabric.

Let's be thankful then that it crops up everywhere from designer runways, to high-street rails… and even your granny's attic.

Warm, luxurious and rich in texture, having a key velvet piece is basically a necessity for ALL winter wardrobes.

Let's face it though, the material is also notoriously difficult to style. Yup get it wrong and it will only look costumey and awkward.

So if you are worried your velvet creations will be a bit too on the nose this festive season, here is how to remain fashion forward (and not a fashion fail).

Tailored

Avoid wearing a lot of slouchy velvet and instead opt for tailored, fitted lines. A velvet suit is a handy trick to keep up your velvety sleeve as it transitions from business to casual seamlessly. Incorporate into a professional wardrobe for some rock chic texture or pair with a pair of trainers for day time cool.

All in one

Don’t be afraid to purchase a velvet piece for the party season. Dresses, playsuits and jumpsuits in this fabric are instantly glamorous and will add some warmth on those cold winter evenings. Pair velvet pieces with stripped back accessories in cool tones and minimal jewellery so that you don’t venture into costume territory.

Mix n match

Having velvet options can add new texture to your wardrobe that you may not have even known you were missing. Incorporate velvet shorts, a t shirt or cardigan into any outfit to add some depth as well as a soft touch. Velvet tends to come in super rich tones so style it up with solid colours such as grey, black, brown or navy.

Style it up

If you are a bit fearless and want to add even more opulence to the most luxurious fabric on the planet, instead of layering it on, try opting for ornate patterns. Velvet is often used to create beautiful designs on plain fabric so use this for instant glamour. Pair ornate pieces with simple accessories that don’t overpower your look.

Style it down

Velvet CAN be dressed down, but do it in the right way. Pair your velvet leggings with slouchy cardigans and a beanie or throw your velvet blazer over a pair of distressed boyfriend jeans and trainers. Velvet can give any casual look a sense of refinement.

Yep, you read that headline right. The best burger in the whole entire world has been voted on and it's a veggie surprise that beat them all.

It might come as a shock to many, but GQ voted and it was a New York veg burger that took home the prize. The winning burger was created by Superiority Burger in New York and sells for only €5.

One customer posted on Instagram: "Can't believe I'm saying this, but I loved this little veggie burger so much that I ate 2."

The burger is described as having a nutty, chunky texture and is served in a bun with all the usual suspects; lettuce, tomato, gherkin and sauce.

Superior indeed. But, there's something to be said about the size – definitely more of a slider to me. #StillHungry #EATINGNYC

Nick Marino, from GQ, has described what it’s like to eat the burger: “The bun squishes. The lettuce crunches. The pickles snap. That patty, made from ingredients Headley (owner of Superiority Burger) won’t divulge and miles beyond whatever your vegan friends use to assault your grill during barbecues, has genuine heft."

Sounds perfect to us! Would you turn veggie for it?

Roberta Bernardo is a 19-year old student from Brazil. She is also now something of an internet celebrity since her adventures with her best friend have gone viral.

So, Roberta and her BFF do pretty much everything that your usual besties do. They hang out, eat snacks and enjoy some fabulous fashion.

The reason their friendship has gone viral is because Roberta’s new pal is not actually human. She’s not even a pet. She’s a potato, named Potato- obviously.

“She looked like a little baby with little arms,” Roberta told BuzzFeed Brazil.

Roberta took it upon herself to bring Potato home, and made her a very important part of her life.

She gave her a total makeover and the two spent some quality time bonding over contouring and hair accessories.

When she shared her story on Facebook, the internet couldn’t get enough of the pair.

So Bernardo took her home and gave her a bath.

When asked how Potato was handling her newfound internet fame, Rpberta said Potato was currently in the fridge so she wouldn’t rot. Good looking out, Roberta.

What could possibly be next for the pair?

“Life is ephemeral,” Bernardo said. “I believe she will live these moments as if they were the last, enjoying the laurels of fame.”

In the meantime, Potato seems to be enjoying a very luxe lifestyle. Her newfound internat fame may have possibly influence her style, possibly.

Lately, we've been hearing a lot about the pitfalls of social media, but now, science has confirmed it: staying away from the "reality distorting" Facebook is likely to increase your happiness.

A study carried out in Denmark has revealed that even as little as a week away from the social networking site could increase your satisfaction in life and significantly reduce stress.

Researchers from the Danish Happiness Research Institute (yep, that's actually a place) divided a group of 1,095 people, aged between 16-76, into two groups.

One group was given their usual access to the site, and the other shut down their profiles for a week.

“Facebook is a constant bombardment of everyone else’s great news, but many of us look out of the window and see grey skies and rain,” Meik Wiking, CEO of the Institute, tells The Guardian

“This makes the Facebook world, where everyone’s showing their best side, seem even more distortedly bright by contrast, so we wanted to see what happened when users took a break.”

Before and after the experiment took place, the participants were asked to rate their life satisfaction out of ten. They also had to comment on how active their social lives were, how good their day-to-day concentration was and if they compared themselves to others.

The resulting study, The Facebook Experiment: Does social media affect the quality of our lives? revealed that those who abstained from the social network had a higher life appreciation, a richer social life and fewer difficulties when concentrating.

Sophie Anne Dornoy, 35, took part in the study and said: “My to-do list was getting done faster than normal as I spent my time more productively. I also felt a sort of calmness from not being confronted by Facebook all the time.”

“It felt good to know that the world doesn’t end without Facebook and that people are still able to reach you,” she says.

Every year college students around the country are lucky to spend their summers on California beaches or strutting about Manhattan and making everyone very jealous with their Snapchat stories.

However, that might be a thing of the past as today it was announced that new, stricter, rules are being put in place for students.

As of 2016, all Irish students must obtain work before they travel to America, and have these jobs vetted by the American administration.

The new restrictions come despite Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s attempts to stick with the regulations already in place.

He is said to have spoken to Irish ambassador Kevin O’Malley on a number of occasions about proposed changes to the J-1 Visa programme.

The new rules will also affect travel within America for students who do get jobs beforehand, limiting their chances to see other parts of the country. Mr Kenny said he feared that the number of students able to avail of the stricter visa rules could drop by up to 80 per cent.

Over 8,000 Irish students travelled to the States in 2015 on the J1 Visa. More students from Ireland than any other country avail of the visa each year. Most of these students choose to look for work once they arrive in America.

"When the J-1 programme was launched, we saw a surge of Irish students travelling to the USA on a working summer visa," said Kevin Donoghue, president of the Union of Students in Ireland.

"It's a fantastic opportunity for personal development through refining independent skills and experiencing another culture. The recent changed restrictions for the J-1 is disappointing," he added.

The humble spud has been a dinner plate staple for as long as we can remember.

Some days all we want to eat is just a giant plate of chips and live a carb-filled life of no regrets. Other days mashed potatoes are what we really need. Yum.

So, potatoes are great and we love them dearly. However, peeling them is not something that we enjoy doing to be honest.

However, thanks to this handy tutorial our days spent hovering over the sink getting wrinkled fingers and pieces of potato skin everywhere are no more!

Yes, it turns out that we have all been peeling spuds the wrong way but this method is about to change your life.

You don’t even need any fancy utensils! As long as you have a knife then you can basically just pull off the skin.

Think of all the time we can save with this. We love it, and we think everyone should give it try at least once. Christmas dinner prep is going to be much easier now.

When moving on from a bad break-up, cleaning your environment of everything that reminds you of them is a painful but necessary process.

But a new website is about to make that process a bit easier for you. The site, called Never Liked It Anyway, is an all-round solution for shedding your emotional baggage by allowing users to sell everything their former flame gave them, or items around the house that remind you of days gone-by.

Yes, this site is fast becoming the home for the heartbroken and lets you make a buck from your break-up… which is a lot safer than trying to burn it all.

The idea for the site came to marketing consultant, Bella Acton, who had her own personal experience of splitting up and being left with two expensive place tickets.

“If you look at it, there’s $2 billion in the dating space and zero dollars in the break-up space,” she told Quartz.

But she also stresses that the site isn’t all about making money off people's emotional misfortune.

Bella said: “We started Never Liked It Anyway to make moving on easier. It’s a place to shed the stories and the stuff.”

With every item that is uploaded to the website, space is given to allow the user to write why they feel they need to part with the piece, and what they plan to do with the money to help them ‘bounce back.’

Kate Winslet is the latest Hollywood actress to speak out about the gender pay gap which has been the topic of much debate.

The Oscar winner has said that, unlike Jennifer Lawrence and many other famous ladies, she would rather not talk about the issue at all. She has that she is “having such a problem with these conversations.”

Speaking to BBC Newsbeat, she added: "I understand why they are coming up, but maybe it's a British thing. I don't like talking about money; it's a bit vulgar, isn't it?"

Kate explained that she is “surprised” by the conversations and she that “it seems quite a strange thing to be discussing out in the open.”

The actress, 40, went on to say that she is perfectly fine with how things are going in the industry:

“I am a very lucky woman, and I'm quite happy with how things are ticking along."

Many would be raising an eyebrow at her comments when taking into account how so many of her peers have been drawing attention to making less money than their male co-stars. Kate however doesn’t feel there is much she can add to the conversation.

“If I'd ever been in that situation I would have either dealt with it or removed myself from it," she said. "I haven't ever felt that I've really had to stick up for myself just because I'm a woman."

Kate admits that she is uncomfortable talking about money publicly and would rather deal with these issues discreetly.

Fellow actress Sandra Bullock however, does not feel the same way. She told Variety that she is sick of women being “mocked and judged” in the media.

“Once we start shifting how we perceive women and stop thinking about them as “less than,” the pay disparity will take care of itself. There’s a much bigger issue at hand. I’m glad Hollywood got caught.”
