Ryan Tubridy

Happy almost-weekend everyone!

We've made it through another week and what's waiting for us at the other end of it is deliciously relaxing.

Couch, a cup of tea/mug of hot chocolate/glass of wine and the Late Late Show on the TV – what more could you want?

So let's get stuck into the line-up and see what guests Tubs will be talking to this week.

It was the longest-running murder trial in Irish criminal history which gripped the nation for 13 weeks, and on Friday night Bobby Ryan’s children Michelle and Robert will join host Ryan Tubridy to speak about their father and the sentencing of Patrick Quirke.

Then on a lighter note, chart-topping band Kodaline will be in for a chat ahead of their Dublin shows later this month – and you can catch them performing their latest single Brother.

Then Ireland's answer to Lena Dunham will be chatting all things to do with her new book, Can I Say No?

She will be telling Ryan about how we've lost the ability to say no and how, by reacquainting ourselves with this two letter word, we can go on to live happier, less stressful and more fulfilling lives.

Then – a bit of nostalgia for those Leaving Cert days – remember them?

With just under a month to go until the LC begins, Ryan will catch up with 6 students from around the country who are currently preparing for the exams and will find out about the stresses, pressures, and ups and downs facing Irish teens.

We’ll also have the first Late Late Show birth as we meet the robot being used to teach medical students about the process of having a baby as well as tunes from SYML.

Don't miss it lads – tune into The Late Late Show, RTÉ One, Friday, May 10 at 9.35pm.

Giddy up, the Late Late is ridin' into town.

Don your cowboy hats and get ready to get into the swing of all things country music.

It will kick off with the biggest opening number yet, featuring Daniel O’Donnell, Nathan Carter, Cliona Hagan, Mike Denver, Michael English, Robert Mizzell, Derek Ryan, and Trudi Lalor – and 100 jivers from around the country giving it socks to an 80s classic.

WE ARE BUZZING.

Host Ryan Tubridy will then host a “Circle of Friends”, sharing family tales and hearing some of our star’s fave songs.

We’ll hear from Robert Mizzell and his dad Richard, who will fly in from Louisiana, Susan McCann and 13-year-old granddaughter Sinead, Cliona Hagan and sister Nicole, and Jimmy Buckley and daughter Claudia.

Ryan will also chat to the gentle giant of country Mick Flavin and his family about his 20-year road to success, overcoming alcohol addiction and having two sons who were born deaf and will never hear their father sing.

You might need to have some tissues at the ready.

In April, the Late Late Show team and the expert panel of Margo and Nathan Carter hit the road to audition hopefuls in the “Search for a Country Star” competition.

Acts from up and down the country competed, and we’ll meet the lucky winner on Friday, as well as see them perform a contemporary country hit with Nathan.

There will also be a tribute to Hank Williams, including tracks such as Hey Good Looking and I Saw the Light.

And it would be a country music extravaganza without the legendary Daniel O’Donnell, who will make a much-anticipated appearance (no sarcasm).

Tune into the The Late Late Show Country Special, RTÉ One, Friday, May 3 at 9.35pm.

What's Friday night without the Late Late?

The line-ups have been great this year and with Tubs at the helm, we've really been enjoying it.

So who will be getting grilled tonight?

Line of Duty star Adrian Dunbar will natter to Ryan about his role as Superintendent Ted Hastings in one of the most applauded TV shows of the last decade, his illustrious career and reflect on what it was like growing up in Northern Ireland.

Then we have former Kerry footballer Pat Spillane who, in 2017 when an action plan to positively develop rural Ireland was launched, was appointed to work with local communities and relay concerns back to the government.

Two years on, Pat joins Ryan to talk about if enough is being done to save rural Ireland.

For a bit of glam, we have Editor-in-chief of US Glamour magazine Samantha Barry and TV presenter Laura Whitmore on their work in the media industry.

The pair will join Ryan to talk about everything from their beginnings in Ballincollig and Bray to why it’s so important to them that women support each other.

After that, Portarlington native Fr Sean Hyland will open up about how he had a successful career as an electrical engineer, but after the deaths of his two children Seana and Ciaran, and then the death of his wife Liz, he decided to become a priest in his 60s.

Similarly, Niall McDonagh’s journey to find faith came about following a string of family tragedies, when the death of his brother, father and cousin left him bereft.

Both men join Ryan to chat about grief and why they turned to religion to cope.

Another guest is Dessie Fitzgerald who was a talented hurler living an ordinary, happy life when a spate of life changing events in one year led him to hit rock bottom.

Then we have World Naked Bike Ride is an annual, worldwide event that highlights the vulnerability of cyclists on the roads, with full or partial nudity encouraged and participants urged to “bare as you dare".

To celebrate the event in Cork on the June 8, we’ll have 16 cyclists in their birthday suits riding through The Late Late Show studio.

Music will be from Gavin James and Cork band True Tides.

Legendary singer and songwriter Rod Stewart, Bataclan survivors Katie Healy and David Nolan and cervical cancer campaigner Laura Brennan lead the line-up for this Friday’s Late Late Show.

In an emotional interview with host Ryan Tubridy, Rod Stewart reflects on family, fame and fortune and discusses why Irish ballad Grace means so much to him.

In November 2015, Katie Healy and David Nolan survived a terror attack at the Bataclan theatre in Paris which claimed the lives of 90 people.

A month later David proposed, and the couple went on to welcome a beautiful daughter in to their lives in 2016. Last December, they received news that no parent wants to hear, and the couple join Ryan to discuss their daughter’s life changing diagnosis.

We’ll also meet Keeva Delaney, the girl who has written a book to raise funds for Cliona’s Foundation, a charity providing much needed funding to parents of children with life limiting conditions.

Earlier this week the HSE confirmed that the uptake of the HPV vaccine has reached 70 per cent, and cervical cancer campaigner Laura Brennan has been front and centre to advocate for the vaccine. We talk to Laura about what the rise in uptake means to her, and we hear about the impact that the campaign has had on teenage girls.

He brought us Irish Mammies, and now author Colm O'Regan is back with a new book: Ann Devine, Ready For Her Close-Up. Colm joins Ryan to discuss what makes the Irish Mammy such a treasured part of our national identity, and why he’s decided to make one the centre point for his first outing as a novelist.

We’ll also be taking a look back at some of Ireland’s most iconic ads, and catching up with actor Joe McKinney 25 years on from dancing in that Guinness ad.

Music will be from James Morrison and we’ll have a performance by Rhythm of the Dance.

Only on The Late Late Show, RTÉ One, Friday, March 15 at 9.35pm

The Late Late Show is celebrating love in all its forms tonight with a show dedicated to romance and butterflies in your stomach.

'So who are the guests for their infamous Valentine's Day episode?', I hear you ask. Well, Tubs has a treat for everyone in the love-struck audience.

Reality TV star couple Vogue Williams and Spencer Matthews fell in love while filming a TV show in 2017, and now they're married with little baby Theodore. They join Ryan Tubridy in the studio tonight, getting candid about their relationship.

What else could startle the romantic senses on the guest seat? Well, someone who has adapted some of Shakespeare's greatest love stories to film and TV is stopping by for a chat.

Actor and director Kenneth Branagh will join The Late Late Show panel of guests to discuss his new movie All Is True, and will elaborate on why Ireland holds a special place in his heart, having moved to England at a young age.

The show has also carried out a search for 'The Greatest Love of All' nationwide, and the public will exclusively be hearing some of the most romantic tales of true love, and viewers who have found their soul mate against all the odds. SWISH SWOO.

Audience games will be taking place (sure to be absolutely GAS), and the 200 singles will be hoping to find that special someone on the RTÉ show.

Music from Whigfield and Mickey Joe Harte join Ryan for some music.. Is is because Mickey Joe's name sounds like Heart? Who knows…tune in to see.

Comedy dance duo Lords of Strut also pop by the Valentine's show to add to the hilarity, rounding up the guests nicely.

There have been some classic humour moments from the show, remember when one guest Colm had his mum asking him questions about his love life? We DIED.

The Late Late Show's annual love programme has long been one of the favourites with the viewers, and for good reason.

We can't wait to see what's in store tonight, the love episode is ALWAYS the best. Apart from the Toy Show, of course.

Liam Neeson has had to defend himself against the racist remarks he made in an interview in The Independent, which was released yesterday.

The Cold Pursuit actor spoke of roaming the streets with a cosh, hoping to murder a "black bastard" after a woman close to him was raped years ago.

Speaking on Good Morning America, he said; "I’m not racist, this was 40 years ago. I was brought up in the north of Ireland. The Troubles. The Sixties, Seventies and Eighties. There was a war going on in the north of Ireland."

"I had acquaintances who were involved in the trouble. The bigotry. One Catholic would be killed, the next day a protestant would be killed. I grew up surrounded by that, but I was never surrounded by it," he said.

The original article featured the Taken actor recalling being told about a friend's rape after he returned from a trip overseas.

“She handled the situation of the rape in the most extraordinary way,” Neeson said. “But my immediate reaction was… did she know who it was? No. What colour were they? She said it was a black person."

“I went up and down areas with a cosh, hoping I’d be approached by somebody. I’m ashamed to say that, and I did it for maybe a week – hoping some (Neeson gestures air quotes with his fingers) ‘black bastard’ would come out of a pub and have a go at me about something, you know? So that I could kill him.”

A post shared by  (@liam.neeson.original) on

Neeson claimed it took him at least a week to process the incident, and anger was his first instinct.

“It was horrible, horrible, when I think back, that I did that,” he said. “It’s awful. But I did learn a lesson from it, when I eventually thought, ‘What the f*ck are you doing’, you know?"

The actor brought up the personal anecdote after being asked to give more insight into his Cold Pursuit character Nels Coxman, who seeks revenge after his son is killed by a drug gang.

The internet went into a meltdown after the interview was published, with the majority of social media users accusing him of racism.

One Twitter user wrote: “Liam Neeson being ready to take any black life over what one person allegedly did just shows how meaningless and inconsequential black lives are to some."

They continued; “Even him telling the story demonstrates a level of privilege and understanding that there may not be repercussions.”

Actor Terry Crews, who is the host of America's Got Talent and star of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, wrote on social media:

"Reminds me of a time I got provoked by a rich white guy I didn’t know. Hoping I would do something." He has been an advocate for domestic violence and sexual violence victims.

RTÉ presenter Ryan Tubridy chose to defend Liam Neeson today, saying that the actor didn't mean any harm;

"I don’t think for one minute that Liam Neeson ever wanted to kill anybody, or would ever harm anyone, or really actually meant it at all. ‘However, “you just can’t say that kind of thing” is what I suspect is going to be the response to that."

He continued;

"Having met him several times, it’s the sort of thing that he might have said over a coffee to somebody privately, but he kind of let it out into the public and that poses a serious problem for him, I suspect, in Hollywood particularly, with all the sensitivities you’d expect and that are rightly there. It’s a conundrum for him."

Former England footballer has also defended the star, calling out other heroes in society who were less than angelic when it came to race (Hi, Winston Churchill) and praising his admission of guilt.

Piers Morgan has branded him a member of the KKK, so he must be in pretty scalding water right now.

What are your thoughts on the debate; Is he shining an important light on the racist instincts present in society, specifically straight, white men? Or is he cancelled? The jury's still out.

Last night, Ryan Tubridy won hearts as the greatest Late Late Toy Showman ever.

The iconic show opened with a musical number from the beloved family film – The Greatest Showman.

Ryan, alongside a cast of talented kids, performed the song in the ringmaster’s red coat and black top, showing off his singing skills.

Over one million viewers tuned into watch what some are calling the best toy show yet.

However, it was the kids that stole the show this year, bringing us to tears and then uncontrollable laughter all in the same night.

Little Davey’s Mary Poppins mishap is making us think he’s not too excited about the upcoming film.

Future businesswoman Alyssa charged the host a whopping €100 for his coffee with ketchup.

And Cormac’s determination to build his mum a floating house in the future was beyond sweet.

The gardaí's newest member is going to keep a safe eye on Donegal for us.

One to rival the show’s opening was Rachel Coyne’s fantastic performance of Never Enough.

The 15-year-old wowed the audience as she received a standing ovation.

Later in the show, hearts were moved when young Scott (nine) revealed that he donated his bone marrow to save his cousin Grace’s life (6).

Scott was then surprised to see his rugby idols Sean O'Brien, Tadhg Furlong, and Rob Carney turn up with gifts on stage.

Rob called the boy a “real life hero” and said all three of them were really proud of Scott for his selfless act.

What an amazing Late Late Toy Show this year! One thing’s for sure, we don’t know how next year will top it.
