Yearly Archives: 2018

Many of us by now have noticed the ONSLAUGHT of reboots which have come our way. Between the incessant Marvel movies and comic book sequels which literally will not stop coming, the millions of Spiderman flicks, not to mention the ridiculous amount of Bond movies (25 to be exact).

 blaming spider man GIF

Yes, 25 movies about the same man doing the same uber-masculine assassinations and the same women dying for him and the same villains again and again and again. *Sigh* Even Daniel Craig agrees that good old James is a misogynist.

The live-action remakes of every single classic Disney animation, the TV reboots of our favourite characters for no actual reason and the revivals of our childhood bands. It begs the question, is the entertainment industry just profiting off of our nostalgia? Most definitely, yes.

When it comes to the Spice Girls, Westlife or Take That, by all means they are welcomed back with open arms.

Yet, when it comes to cinema, which is literally CRYING OUT for representation and new voices which are demanding to be heard, why are they using the same old formulas?

Art is supposed to be unique, a form of expression. Not recycled like old Halloween costumes that don't fit anymore but you're just gagging to feel 18 again. Back when life was more about what alcohol to buy for pre-drinks and not what bills you have to pay first so you can survive as a full-grown adult. *shudders*

The point is: a new Batman/Joker combo is not cinematic gold, for God’s sake. A new Pirates of the Caribbean written by the Deadpool duo will not shake the earth.

Recent groundbreaking genre favourites such as A Quiet Place, Get Out and Moonlight have pushed the boundaries of cinematic territory and have told stories from new and vital points of view, so why can't Hollywood give more opportunities to scripts, directors and voices like these?

News recently broke that Shrek, one of the most popular animated franchises of all time, is getting a reboot (pause for gasps).

Those of us who grew up with the infamous green ogre and his hilarious sidekick, Donkey, will most likely shudder at the thought of Hollywood studios replacing a beloved film of our youth with a facade, a copy which can never truly replace the original.

Others will delight in the nostalgia of creating more content surrounding the comedic protagonist and his fairytale friends, especially since the man behind the reboot, as well as the revival of Puss in Boots, is Chris Meledandri.

Known as the mastermind of the Despicable Me movies (and creator of the minions, which have literally overtaken the world and internet memes), Meledandri has been tasked by Universal Pictures with finding some fresh storylines to being the lovable ogre into the modern time. I say modern time as if Shrek is donkeys-years old (yes, I made a donkey joke. Deal with it).

Shrek was originally released back in 2001, making it barely 17 years old. While a lot has happened in technology and film-making in this time, does it really seem necessary to bring back a franchise which has really run its course? After all, Shrek the Fourth only entered cinemas in 2010, and left much to be desired.

Shrek No GIF

Studios are so obsessed with maintaining popularity and success of these franchises, that often they completely ruin the essence of what made it loved by audiences in the first place, in this case: comedic integrity.

I mean, a storyline about an ogre defending his swamp in a land of fairytale creatures, voiced by Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas and Eddie Murphy? The person who successfully pitched that idea must be incredibly rich by now.

At least Meledandri has the good sense to keep the original vocal performances:

“When you look back on those vocal performances they’re awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations,” explains Meledandri.

“The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.” Good luck with that, Mr. Director Whose Film Company Has Just Released A Remake Of The Iconic The Grinch. You paint a highly believable portrait.

Hollywood remakes have been saturating cinema over the last decade, and there are arguments to be made for both sides of the tide. If a remake is done right, à la A Star is Born, something special can happen.

This is usually a result of some newfangled aspect of the film however, a tweak or drastic change which brings the piece back to life but also gives it a platform in its own right.

Lady Gaga, for example, plays the role of struggling artist Ally in a way that makes it impossible to compare her to Barbara Streisand. The songs are also freshly crafted, and impactful in their raw energy, partially due to Bradley Cooper’s directorial talent and surprising talent as a singer.

Formerly known as an actor, his transition into musicality and the directorial chair allows the film to reach new heights, as if feels as if we are being introduced to someone who we’ve never really known at all.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has also achieved phenomenal success, however there is next to nothing about the show which resembles its predecessor, and it is stand-alone as a result, especially with its sense of ‘woke’ teen angst which is captured almost to perfection.

Yet the majority of remakes are arguably just major Hollywood studios tapping into the nostalgia of audiences who are ready and willing to return to the cinema seat to catch any glimpse of their favourite childhood character or storyline in action.

Certain remakes adapt the trend with refreshing results; such as the Fargo reboot which was recreated as a mini-series and is widely well-reviewed. An audience is more likely to watch something which they are already familiar with, and if the sense of familiarity is matched with something genuinely unique, truly excellent cinematic gold can occur.

Classics are classics for a reason, and taking the formula and twisting it to adapt to a new generation often leads to disastrous consequences. The remake of Psycho, the Great Gatsby (controversial, most people loved the grandeur of Baz Luhrmann yet the power of the written words were essentially erased) and Footloose, for example, need to die a slow death.

leonardo dicaprio GIF

The endless sequels are also a problem, I mean PLEASE learn to leave it alone. Just because the movie was good does not mean it has to be continued and drawn out until the life is sapped out of it.

If there is a new technology, a new actor or actress or director, or scriptwriter who are talented enough to reuse old material and revitalise it, by all means, go ahead. Yet the magic of the true classics cannot be forgotten.

The day the news breaks that the Harry Potter franchise is getting a remake, for example, you will find this writer in a pool of her own tears, echoing the chant; “YOU CAN’T DO THIS TO ME!” on repeat. Don’t judge. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were the heroes of my youth, the faces which encapsulated the characters I had fallen in love with page by page.

sad harry potter GIF

Transforming the series would simply remind me that I am now old enough for my childhood characters to be replaced and made into something new and alien altogether. If they even DREAM of touching perfection like Back to the Future or The Godfather, there will be hell to pay from the ever-protective fanbases.

The love most people harbour for that first spark of a film or character which had never been seen before is difficult to rearrange. There are an infinite number of voices in cinema which have yet to be heard; only now are women gaining access to cinematography, directorial roles, production roles and script-writing responsibilities.

Only now are people of different ethnic backgrounds, diverse economic circumstances, sexual orientations having their voices heard. Can you imagine how many stories they have to tell?

For so long, only the powerful were given the chance to create movies. Creating new formulas which give other people a change to feel represented and tell their own stories would revolutionise cinema.

So before we rush to discuss which man will be chosen as the next Bond, which Disney film will be recreated, or which superhero will once again be given a new face, why not look to those who haven’t been given a face, or a voice in cinema?

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, as the phrase goes, but authenticity is the greatest form of art.

Middle name Michael is believed to be after Pippa's father, in addition to James' younger brother Michael who died aged 23 while climbing Mount Everest in 1999.

The second middle name is likely to have been inspired by Prince William.

Baby Arthur was born on October 16 at the Lindo Wing in St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, weighing in at 8lb and 9oz.

Spice Girls and Girl Power are two things that have just always gone together.

And it's something that the girl band are keeping close to their hearts as they unveiled this weekend.

The pop group – minus Posh – have announced that they've teamed up with Comic Relief to create a T-shirt which will raise money for women's charities.

It seems that female solidarity is what they are, and always will be, about.

All profits from the #IWannaBeASpiceGirl T-shirt will go to Comic Relief's Gender Justice campaign.

The band released a statement saying that, ''equality and the movement of people power has always been at the heart of the band. It is about equality for all, ’every boy and every girl.'''

They continued, ''we recently found out that charities focused on issues faced by women don’t get the funding that they desperately need, so launching a campaign to raise funds for these issues is incredibly important to us and an area we want to support.”

In other news with the girls, they have expanded their summer 2019 reunion tour from six UK stadium dates to 11 as the demands for tickets have soared.

Well done ladies, it's a fantastic cause.

The 58-year-old has come under fire over claims of abusive behaviour, with reports of angry outbursts taking place in the training room that had left Amy in tears.

However, now Danny has taken to social media to suggest that it is the BBC themselves that are guilty of intimidating behaviour.

Reports emerged last week that the actor had been swearing and shouting a lot at Amy during rehearsals.

Strictly bosses told Danny they would not tolerate any more bad behaviour in recent meetings.

The pair appeared on spin-off show It Takes Two to address the claims.

Amy said, ''things did get a little bit intense the other day in rehearsals. But you know what, we took a half an hour break and get back straight to it.''

She continued, ''I’ve never felt bullied or threatened by Danny I really want to get this man to Blackpool and then to the final.''

What did Danny have to say?

''I would never bite the hand that feeds me, it’s the best dance we have done in the past couple of days since we have been on the show. And I’m just happy to go along with it. She’s the boss, she wears the pants. Why would I argue with a Welsh woman?''

However, now he has hit back at the BBC, tweeting, ''#FakeNews is in the mouth of the beholder’” along with a face palming emoji.

Fans were quick to comment, some defending Danny.

One wrote, ''she said she never felt threatened by him. So how does that equate to bullying? Don’t exaggerate things! Drama queen.'

His wife, Petula, has hit out at the bullying claims, tweeting, ''wow BBCstrictlyPR and BBCstrictly are really throwing Danny John Jules under that bus…I'm in shock…why are you trying to destroy him?''

People gathered under bus stops yesterday as torrents of rain piled down throughout the day.

We’ve had horrible weather at the tail end of this week and unfortunately, it doesn’t look like tomorrow is going to be any different.

More rain has been predicted by Met Éireann as well as the possibility of hail and thunderstorms.

Meteorologist Joan Blackburn announced what tomorrow’s weather will look like on RTE Radio One.

“It will be cool and bright tomorrow with mist and early frost clearing. Sunny spells and scattered showers are likely during the morning.

“Those scattered showers will become widespread in the afternoon, some if these showers heavy or of hail, and there’s a risk of isolated thunderstorms.

“The heavy showers will continue overnight,” she warned.

A high of 12 degrees is expected tomorrow and the hail and thunderstorm prediction will carry on through Monday.

The rain will continue until Wednesday evening when it is expected to dissipate into scattered, light showers.

So, make sure to bundle up for the rest of the weekend and stay warm. It’d be best to postpone outdoor plans for now.

The good news is that traffic is said to be running more smoothly after yesterday’s horrendous delays.

And hopefully, Irish transport will be prepared for the upcoming weather come Monday.

Hailey Baldwin is PrettyLittleThing’s newest ambassador, and she is seizing her opportunity to make an amazing statement.

The collab is promoting inclusivity – something that used to be rare in the fashion industry, but has become more and more present in recent years. (Hallelujah!)

The brand aims to encourage confidence and real self love through fashion to all women no matter what shape they are.

EveryBODY is beautiful and we deserve to feel sexy no matter what body type we have. We’re all different so why are clothes usually seen on one type of model – stick thin?

Hailey’s collab is all about changing that narrow-minded outlook by changing up the usual advert style.

The campaign uses two different sized models to reflect how the same styles are worn, defining the meaning of #everyBODYInPLT as a way to praise and refine body positivity.

The collection looks fierce on all body types, so that ALL of us can look good in every piece.

Most girls have their stories of online shopping woes – a playsuit that looked amazing on the size four model that we thought would look exactly the same on us.

And it totally doesn't…

The aim of the new line is to eliminate this issue – to promote body confidence and remind us that not everyone is tiny and that’s normal.

That is why we love that this collection is made for every type of woman and is modelled by different sized girls, so we can see how a dress will really look on us.

Scotland is the first country in the world to require LGBTI teaching as part of their curriculum.

Campaigners are overjoyed to have helped establish this milestone in the UK education system.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney made the announcement with high hopes of the program’s potential.

The Scottish Government said: “Deputy First Minister John Swinney has just announced that Scotland will become the first country in the world to have #LGBTI inclusive education embedded in the curriculum.

“We want every LGBTI person in Scotland to feel safe, supported and included at school. Scottish schools are going to lead the way in LGBTI inclusion by adopting new measures recommended by experts.

“We will provide professional learning for current and future teachers, improve monitoring and school inspections of LGBTI inclusion, improve practice and guidance for teachers, and improve recording of instances of LGBTI bullying in schools.”

The groundbreaking program was fought for by the Time for Inclusive Education campaign (TIE) and was voted unanimously on by The National Parent Forum of Scotland.

The TIE campaign shared the news on their Twitter page, calling the news “a monumental victory”.

The amended curriculum will be integrated into all state schools across the country.

TIE’s co-founder Jordan Daly said, “This is a monumental victory for our campaign, and a historic moment for our country. The implementation of LGBTI inclusive education across all state schools is a world first.

“In a time of global uncertainty, this sends a strong and clear message to LGBTI young people that they are valued here in Scotland.”

A previous study conducted by the campaign has revealed startling facts about circumstances for LGBTI youth.

Nine in ten LGBTI Scots experience homophobia at school, and 27% reported they had attempted suicide after being bullied.

The study also found there was little understanding in schools about prejudice against people with variations of sex characteristics and intersex bodies.

Many are glad to see that the country is taking action to fight these statistics and provide a safer and more inclusive environment for LGBTI youth.

Many love Sarah Ferguson’s spirited personality.

In contrast to the proper traditions of the royals, she may have been exactly what the family needed, especially in the 1980s.

And now, the beloved Duchess of York has spoken out for her first in-depth interview in 20 years.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Sarah recalled her daughter’s recent wedding with fondness and said it reminded her of her dear friend Princess Diana.

When she shuffled into the church, surrounded by loved ones, the duchess was struck by the loss of her best friend.

“I thought of absent friends and family; of Diana – but she’s with me all the time. What I miss most is her tinkling laughter,” she said.

“Diana was my best friend and the funniest person I knew. She had such a timing and wit.

“It was a total joy to be with her because we just laughed and enjoyed life so much, and I know she would have loved the wedding.”

The mum became overwhelmed with the love that filled the wedding chapel on her daughter’s big day.

The sparks flew between Eugenie and Jack, and Sarah knew that her daughter shared the same joy that her and Diana used to.

“My proudest moment,” Duchess Sarah said, “was watching Eugenie standing tall, very proud to show her scoliosis scar in her low-backed dress.

“I’d gone to all the fittings and sat there beaming with delight, and because there was no veil it was a very strong statement.

“We rang St George’s Chapel to make sure there wasn’t a special rule specifying veils must be worn, but there wasn’t and Eugenie just wanted to be herself.

“The tiara (borrowed from granny) danced to her. She was just so radiant. She said: ‘Mum, I thought I was going to get nerves,’ but she didn’t.

“She and Jack are just meant to be. He adores her, and now I’ve got a son.”

Sarah will always share that special friendship with Princess Diana, doting on some of their favourite memories together.

And now her daughter has found her best friend for life, a man that her mum sees will make Eugenie laugh and bring her life joy.
