First Instagram came for Snapchat with the development of its stories feature, and now the app is aiming to become a one-stop-shop by taking on YouTube with its new update. 

Instagram have just introduced IGTV – a video sharing action that allows creators to upload hour-long video content. 

Insta is moving to become the all-inclusive app for all forms of social content, as the one aspect it hasn't had previously is vertical-form, long-line video. 

Young people gravitate more and more to the intimate feeling and personal content created by online stars over on Youtube, with videos on the platform earning billions of views. 

IGTV will be curated to the users you already follow and interact with most, much like stories. 

To start off with, only bigger accounts ill be able to upload long videos, but the option will be rolled out to all accounts over time. 

Instagram is expected to build out a monetization option for IGTV creators, much like YouTube.

Currently there are no ads on the service, but that is sure to change with time. 

Could YouTube go the way of Snpachat thanks to this Insta development? We'll soon find out.

Over the past year, many plastic surgeons have concentrated on a new social media trend where they live-stream operations to hundreds of thousands on Instagram and Snapchat.

With follower numbers and page views that some social influencers can only dream about, are plastic surgeons becoming the new celebrities?

Besides all the blood and scalpels, this trend has some outcomes that are definitely a cause for concern. It’s known that plastic and cosmetic surgeons have advertised their services for years online but now they’re increasing their engagement ratings by posting the shocking step-by-step details of procedures from the operating room.

People can now follow patients, many of whom are celebrities, into the surgery room from the comfort of their own home.

Their profiles are essentially their portfolios, filled with hundreds of before and after photos of everything from botox to tummy tucks and breast augmentations.

I admit, I look to find a body type like mine that I can identify with and become very engrossed in the transformation.

What Calgary plastic surgeons may see as a tool for transparency and a way of educating people on surgery, can manifest into an unhealthy obsession where I’m considering how long it would take to save up enough for a boob job. Luckily for me, the notion quickly passes.

However, for some women, particularly the younger female generation, seeing these completely unrealistic photos and thinking ‘this is what I want to look like’ causes serious issues for their well-being and self-worth.

Social media is changing the taboo of plastic surgery. Before the rise of the internet, plastic surgery was something people underwent but never spoke about or it was seen as something just celebrities got.

Part of the taboo came from the fact people didn’t know much about it. Nowadays, women are engaging with these viral videos, they’re able to ask questions directly regarding their suitability for a chosen procedure and can even get a ballpark price.

This new trend is normalising cosmetic and plastic surgery and it’s benefiting no one but the medical practitioners. Instagram isn’t just a way to keep up to date with friends and family anymore. You can now easily book a nose job quicker than you’ll get a reply from your girlfriend about the antics of Saturday night.

With more and more celebrities opening up about their cosmetic surgeries and tagging their plastic surgeon in their posts, is it any wonder girls as young as 18 are saving up for lip fillers?

According to the International Master Course on Aging Science (IMCAS) figures released in February, spending on cosmetic surgery has jumped by eight percent in a year, now totalling $10.7bn (€8.6bn.) Has the normality of plastic surgery on social media sparked this increase?

These figures are expected to increase by another 9% next year and are likely to more than double in the seven-year period from 2014 to 2021.

In today’s world of apps and social media influencers, people have become more critical of their appearance. Plastic surgeons have played on that. You have to give them credit for their online marketing tactics.

They have amassed thousands of followers on Snapchat and Instagram, expertly using the platforms to promote their own businesses and their industry.

Take Dr Ashkan Ghavami for example, he has on 292 thousand followers on Instagram. He takes time to answers their questions and allows his lengthy list of celebrity clients to gush over him and his work online.

He’s a celebrity in his own way too. It’s not just images and videos of surgeries, followers of Dr Ghavami will also get glimpses of his dinners, drinks with colleagues and his vacations (He was in Ireland last year.)

This is another clever trick, humanising themselves and allows them to fit nicely in between the Snapchat stories of our friends and social influencers we follow.

Typically these famous plastic surgeons are middle-aged and men. In order to attract the millennials who are fuelling the plastic surgery trend, their off-duty lifestyles must relate to what young people are familiar with.

But where are the videos of the complications? Where are the cameras when the patient’s body rejects the implants? Or the video of the patient crying over their permanent bee-stung lips?

Potential patients are not getting a full picture of the risks involved. There are numerous risks associated with going under the knife, such as infection, nerve injuries, scarring or blood clots.

The videos may be giving some people false illusions of what surgery is actually like.

They are downplaying the seriousness of plastic surgery. By filming short videos it is just not possible to give the whole picture and the magnitude of surgery. Not forgetting to mention the idea of a phone in surgery could compromise the surgeon’s work.

Some surgeons say that filming videos of procedures can be educational and helpful and can be used for training purposes. There is an argument that videos can provide vital information to potential patients.

However, with a large number of young people using the social platforms, the risks, as well as the benefits, need to be highlighted. It needs to be handled responsibly.

The new trend is very controversial and with the ever-increasing rise in the use of social media, the phenomena of sharing videos of surgeries on social media aren’t disappearing any time soon. The popularity of plastic surgeons will continue to rise.

With an altered perception of beauty, we’re heading for a self-image crisis.

After much controversy, the Miss America pageant is defining its role in an era of female empowerment and gender equality by scrapping it’s swimsuit competition.

This change is due to the new chairwoman and previous contestant, Gretchen Carlson, who once sued Fox News chief executive Roger Ailes for sexual harassment in 2016. She became one of the most outspoken advocates for victims during the #MeToo era.

It was announced that the competition would cut the swimsuit and evening gown parts of the contest and replace them with a “live interaction session with the judges” where the contestant “will highlight her achievements and goals in life.”

The Miss America competition began in Atlantic City in 1921 – one year after women gained the right to vote in the United States. It first launched as a swimsuit pageant to promote Atlantic City beaches. As the years went on, the winner of the swimsuit competition became a good indicator of who was likely to overall.

I believe that Miss America needs to be modernised and relate to young women. They should focus on the career achievements of past winners and the swimsuit competition could be a distraction from that message.

According to pageant coach Valerie Hayes, Miss America executives have had discussions about eliminating the segment for many years, and the introduction of new leadership provided the perfect opportunity – mainly because the nine members of the board of directors, seven which are women united and approved the change in March.

These women understand the pressure of appearing on television in a bikini. Pageant enrolment numbers dropped in recent years, as many young women are hesitance to wear a swimsuit onstage in the social media era, when the image will be immediately circulated and judged and where there's a lot of pressure on body image to be a particular way.

The financial aspect for the organisation may improve as some sponsors didn’t want to associate with a pageant that featured a degrading swimsuit competition. Its one of many remarkable changes that has been repeated through Hollywood, politics and workplaces around the world. It broadened the conversation from sexual harassment to the way that women’s bodies are viewed.

It seems that #MeToo has done what a protest could not: eliminate one of the most ridicule aspects of the competition.The swimsuit competition will not be missed and Miss America is a small step to help lead the way. More women may participate, even if they don’t fit the stereotypical image of a size-zero pageant winner as it’s now a leadership and academic achievement program.

On social media, the organisation already has a new hashtag for the occasion: #byebyebikini. Their new motto is “To prepare great women for the world, and to prepare the world for great women.” And its website indicated a broad rebranding effort: “Miss America 2.0. Coming soon: New website. New show. New experience.”

Although women should be comfortable in their own bodies whatever their shape or size,I don’t think that's what the competition embraced. Now, they’re no longer judging women on their clothes or their irrelevant talents. They’re going to judge them on what they say and their social impact initiatives.

Miss America both state and national competitions were the largest source of scholarship money for women in the U.S., yet the necessary requirements were physical, not intellectual. In 1968, the Miss America pageant was confronted with a protest on the Atlantic City boardwalk: 100 feminists threw bras, girdles, curling irons, false eyelashes and other “instruments of female torture” into a trash can labelled “Freedom.”

Until 1940, it was written in the guidelines that contestants must be “of good health and of the white race.” The organisation would not have its first African-American winner until Vanessa Williams earned the 1984 crown. Old fashioned pageantry is dying off and the people who enjoy it aren’t developing along with our modern day world.

Like most things, pageants need to grow with the times. It’s a small step towards a cultural revolution. The people at home want a well-rounded, relatable human being as their winner, they want a role-model, someone they can aspire to be.

Antonia Okafor said “I didn't mind the swimsuit competition when I was in pageants. But it was used to body shame us. I used to shrug off the feminists who made a big deal about the swimsuit competition in pageants being sexist; I believed my mentors in the pageant world that, like in bodybuilding competitions, swimsuits just allowed contestants to show off their inner confidence and judges to assess our physical fitness.

'But after participating in pageants, I’ve realised that the idea that the swimsuit segment is just about fitness is completely false: It’s about whether or not you fit a certain, antiquated ideal of the “perfect woman.”

Both Miss World and Miss International don’t include swimsuits in their competitions, instead they focus on fitness wear or sports to see how athletic a contestant really is rather than making the contestants reveal their bodies. Feminism and femininity can go hand in hand, but neither suggests that you have to look "good" in a swimsuit. It’s outdated and degrading.

Miss America have produced two candidates, Erika Harold and Mallory Hagan, who are both currently running for public office. It will continue to produce educated, brave, confident young women who set goals and achieve them, and women who encourage other women instead of tearing them down. And it will set the stage for other systems to make the necessary changes they need but are too afraid to implement.

“Speaking for myself, when I competed 20 years ago, I found the swimsuit competition oddly empowering, because once I could walk across the stage in a two-piece swimsuit and high heels I could do just about anything,” said Kate Shindle, the 1998 Miss America who is now a board member of the organisation.

“But I also don’t think I processed everything at the time. It’s strange — it gives strangers a kind of ownership over your body that you don’t quite anticipate.” Some former contestants have spoken out against the swimsuit competition, saying it led to serious physical and mental problems.

Although women should be proud of their body, the competition objectifies women more than it empowers them.

A woman’s goals and aspirations are far more important than how she looks in a swimsuit.

Service dogs do incredible work for their owners with disabilities or impairments. They are there to help guide, protect and seek help if something goes wrong. 

And most of us know that when you see a service dogs out and about you are not to go up and pet it. However, what should you do if a one comes up to you directly, and with no owner in sight? And what does it mean? 

Well, according to a post on Tumblr, "if a service dog without a person approaches you, it means the person is down and in need of help".

One owner, who goes by the name of Lumpatronics, took to the blogging site to share an incident that occurred about a week ago. 

The blogger explained how while out and about with their service dog they tripped and fell. The dog is trained to get an adult if this person has a seizure, and so raced off to seek help.

"I went after him after I had dusted off my jeans and my ego, and I found him trying to get the attention of a very annoyed woman," they wrote.

"She was swatting him away and telling him to go away. So I feel like I need to make this heads up: If a service dog without a person approaches you, it means the person is down and in need of help.

"Don’t get scared, don’t get annoyed, follow the dog! If it had been an emergency situation, I could have vomited and choked, I could have hit my head, I could have had so many things happen to me. We’re going to update his training so if the first person doesn’t cooperate, he moves on, but seriously guys.

"If what’s-his-face could understand that lassie wanted him to go to the well, you can figure out that a dog in a vest proclaiming it a service dog wants you to follow him."

What is your typical weekday breakfast?

I usually grab whatever is in the fruit bowl and have a Revive Active – so,so good for energy. 

What about lunch?

I’m currently obsessed with Industry's salad boxes – I get one of those almost every day.

They have new salads every day, so you’re never bored. Make sure you get the hummus too – it’s life changing.  

What do you usually have for dinner?

Some sort of pasta or fish and vegetables.

When I’m feeling lazy (which is all the time), I get Cotto pizza or Brother Hubbard via Deliveroo.

Is it different at the weekend?

Myself and William have more time at the weekend, so we tend to go wild in the kitchen, and pour loads of time and energy into a meal.

William usually goes all out and whips up a cake too. 

Do you snack during the day?

Crisps are my weakness. I’d eat bags and bags of them.

Tayto Cheese & Onion are my fave (at the moment). 

What would be your ideal food day?

For breakfast, I'd have almond milk porridge from The Westbury. 

For lunch, whatever the special is in The Pepper Pot. 

Dinner would be the tasting menu in Chapter One.

Finally, for dessert, I'd have a Cremia ice-cream cone from Japan (the best ice-cream you’ll ever have).

The one food you could have everyday for the rest of your life?

Pasta (all kinds of pasta) 

What is your favourite dessert?

In Dublin, I love Coppinger Row – there’s always such a gorgeous atmosphere there. 

In Ireland (this is SO hard to chose!) maybe Café Paradiso in Cork. Proof that meat is not necessary to make an exquisite meal.   

The best brunch place in Dublin?

Fia in Rathgar. The best eggs in Dublin. 

Do you have any “food pet peeves”?

Raisins; they seem to be in everything and they RUIN everything.

Even people who are fond of a raisin would prefer a plain scone, or to not have them in a curry or couscous.

PLEASE STOP PUTTING RAISINS IN FOOD!!

What food would you not eat for the whole world? 

Coddle – not if you paid me.

Elderflower cordial. 

You have friends over for dinner, what do you cook for them?

Our halloumi burgers – they always win hearts.

Do you find it hard to eat a healthy diet in a daily basis? 

No, not at all. Good food is plentiful these days, and most cafes and restaurants are pulling up their socks and tweaking menus to suit those after wholesome dishes. 

What is your guilty pleasure?

A cheese toasty. I’d have them every day… 

What is you go-to drink/cocktail in a bar/pub?

Espresso martini or a G&T.

Your favourite place for a drink in Dublin? 

L’Gueuleton. And the barman William is really hot!

Daniel Craig is expected to hang up his tuxedo and end his time as 007 after the next James Bond film, which will most likely be released in 2019.

That leaves only one question then: who will replace him as the iconic spy?

Many people have been calling for a person of colour to play Bond (Idris Elba, anyone?) and others have said that it's high time a woman take on the role.

John Krasinski is among those hoping for a female Bond – more specifically, for his wife Emily Blunt to play the part.

“I think a woman Bond would be amazing … They just did it on Doctor Who and people went ballistic [with excitement]," he told the Evening Standard.

"Emily would be an amazing Bond. Would she do it? I don’t know. But I would love to see her do it. I love to see her do anything, but the Bond franchise for me is so [great].”

To be honest, now that he's saying it we can't think of anyone more perfect.

Sexy British accent? Check. Unbelievably good looks? Check. Suave attitude? Check! Let's just make her a secret agent already.

Her acting cred puts her over the edge, too. From Devil Wears Prada to Young Victoria to Into the Woods, the 35-year-old has chops.

And who knows, maybe if Emily is involved in the project John will be on board, too.

He recently directed and co-wrote the critically acclaimed film A Quiet Place, which he also co-starred in with his wife. The 38-year-old has said that he'd love to work with Emily again, who he praises as his 'favourite actress'.

“I would do everything with Emily. She was just so incredibly supportive with the script and had ideas of how to shoot, and on set with such a great energy. She is the best person to work with," he gushed.

It also helps that John is all about empowering women. The former Office star said, "Female empowerment is vital, it’s a must, it’s not a thing you’ve got to be aware of, it’s an obvious must.

"Women are as heroic — and in my case much more heroic — than men, so I love doing it [creating those characters].”

Fingers crossed we get to see a female Bond on the silver screen soon!

Find yourself getting a bit narky after a few too many G&Ts?

Well, according to science, you're not the only one.

In fact, new research has shown that spirits are the most likely alcohol type to spark a feelings of aggression with 30 per cent of people agreeing that these type of drinks provoke negative behaviour.

Results from the world's largest online survey of legal and illicit drug and alcohol use revealed that just 20 per cent of participants associated spirits such as vodka, gin and rum with a feeling of calm and relaxation.

Meanwhile, red wine (53 per cent) and beer (50 per cent) were found to be the most relaxing alcoholic drinks.

However, it's not all bad news for spirit-lovers.

The study also found that spirits were more likely to promote some positive feelings when compared to beer and wine, with four out 10 admitting they felt sexier after a few vodka and whites.

According to The Independent, researchers say that understanding emotions associated with the consumption of alcohol was “imperative” to addressing issues of alcohol misuse.

“Understanding emotions associated with alcohol consumption is imperative to addressing alcohol misuse, providing insight into what emotions influence drink choice between different groups in the population,” the study concluded.

So, the next time you're looking for a quiet night in, skip the gin and head straight for the vino instead.

Online dating can be tricky business – perfectly-angled photos, witty bios and just enough sarcastic humour so your potential match knows what they're getting themselves in for.

You could easily spend hours curating your profile in an attempt to highlight your most attractive traits, but it seems those efforts could be in vain if you fail to mention one particular exercise routine.

A survey conducted by dating website Zoosk found that including the word 'pilates' in your dating profile could increase your number of matches by up to 160 per cent.

The workout was deemed to be the sexiest activity a potential partner could partake in, with 65 per cent of participants saying that it was important for them to date someone who exercised regularly.

But don't worry if pilates aren't your thing – kick-boxing, zumba and yoga were also found to be a major turn-on.

In fact, an active lifestyle is deemed so desirable that 11 per cent of millennials admitted to pretending to like exercise to impress a potential love interest.

However, if you haven't yet jumped on board the fitness wagon, all hope is not lost.

Research also found that people who expressed a love of particular food also saw an increase in matches.

It seems that the mere mention of guacamole is enough to get some people all hot and bothered, with guac-loving profiles receiving up to 144 per cent more messages.

(Definitely worth the extra €0.85 if you ask us). 

So, to sum up, if you're on the hunt for a bit of romance this Valentines' Day, pilates and Mexican food might, for once, be a winning combination.

Among the many exciting European cities I have been lucky enough to visit, Rome holds a special place in my heart.

Aesthetically, it is one of the most beautiful places you will ever get to see; culturally, you can discover some truly incredible artwork, feeling like you are walking in an open air museum; foodwise, it offers some of the best food you could dream of.

While the offer is overabundant and overall quite affordable, here are some tried and tested places we seriously recommend if you are planning a trip to the Italian capital this summer.

A few steps from the Borghese Palace, Matricianella is an old trattoria with checked tablecloths, black-and-white-dressed waiters and a menu that will make you drool.

Go for the Taglioni al tartuffo (the truffle pasta), they are a proper masterpiece.

2. Trattoria Da Teo

Located in the gorgeous neighbourhood of Trastevere, this small eatery offers the most typically Roman experience.

Get a table outside and order some pasta, it will probably be the best ones you have ever tasted – we particularly recommend the Spaghetti alle Vongole. 

3. Pizzeria Ostiense

Roman pizzas are quite different to the thick doughy Neapolitan-style pizza we are mostly used to. Paper-thin, with simple yet tasty topping, it makes for a whole new pizza experience.

In the hip neighbourhood of Testaccio, we recommend Pizzeria Ostiense, loved by the locals. You are in for a treat!

4. Giolitti

Open since 1900, this gelateria can be considered a landmark at that stage and some consider it the best one in Rome. 

Don't be repelled by the queue and the absolute mayhem inside the shop. Your ice-cream will be 100% worth it.

Located near the Trevi Fountain, Al Moro is a high-end, 1920s wood-paneled restaurant with a classic Roman menu.

Offering excellent traditional and seasonal dishes, this historic eatery will provide a fabulous Roman experience.

Met Éireann is forecasting a heatwave to take hold of the country next week. 

Over the weekend, temperatures are expected to reach heights of 24 degrees, with this fab weather extending into the following week. 

'Very warm or even hot conditions developing into next week with sunshine prevailing,' says Met Éireann.

'The warmest weather so far this year possibly on the way through this extended settled spell.'

This weekend, Sunday is anticipated to be hotter than Saturday, but both days will reach highs of 23-24 degrees.
