“My first memories are of the barbed wire at the end of our street.”

Memories are very important to Deirdre Mackel. In honour of International Women's Day, we sat down with the Belfast artist and Deliveroo cyclist to chat with her about art, feminism, cycling and everything in-between.

“My art is inspired by the little memories I have of childhood. They’re symbolic, but not overtly so,"she says of her art.

“I get the memory and I go with my trail of thought and see what comes out of it.”

What comes out of the past has a lot to say about the future. Several of Deirdre's works tackle the construction of femininity and break down what exactly it means to be a woman in today's society.

"I did an ironing board sculpture and it really represented the futility of domesticity. Why do we bother ironing? Why are we wasting our lives doing the same thing day after day?"

An image that Deirdre keeps returning to are dresses. For her, they have a personal meaning as well as feminist one.

"I remember drawing myself on the back of a wedding invitation when I was about three. I was curious about it so I tracked down that same paper online. I didn't realise that they were the colours that I always used in my painting."

Dresses are not only a source of memory for Deirdre, but they also represent something deeper.

“For me, dresses represent conformity and non-conformity. They’re the christening gown, the communion dress and the wedding dress. They represent what’s expected of a nice, Catholic girl.”

After studying Fine Art in The University of Ulster, Deirdre now brings art and creative projects to Belfast's local communities. She's passionate about finding healing through art. A recent instillation finds beauty in barbed wire.

"That was my childhood. There was barbed wire at the end of our street, that was my play-ground growing up. That's why I call these instillations accidental gardens. It's all about finding those tiny spots of beauty."

She works with community groups bringing out creativity in everyone from children to elderly groups.

“One of my favourite things is creating art in what are known as ‘problem spaces’. These are places that have a lot of bad feelings and memories attached to them.”

One such problem space was an old RUC police barracks. With Deirdre's help and encouragement, a seniors group used their croqueting skills, tuning a place that many of them had loathed and feared into a colourful knitted garden.

"Seeing them have a tea party in the garden surrounded by their work- that's the kind of thing that drives me."

Historically, certain communities in Belfast suffered real or perceived barriers accessing art galleries. With the help of EU funding, Deirdre is breaking down these barriers.

"You only have to look at the giant murals on the Falls road to know that the creative instinct was always there. They’re phenomenal works of art, now we have tourists come just to visit them.

“Twenty years ago, there was a distinct lack of place for the arts and creative activities. Now a lot of the community art projects are funded by the EU. We’re working with artists to create public art trails around the city. It’s all about turning the physical scars of the conflict into something people can feel proud of and have ownership of.

“It greatly contributes to the health and wellbeing of people in the community, being about to claim ownership of a sculpture or a piece of art is a powerful thing. It’s one of the reasons why I’m so passionate about art in the community.”

As well as looking out for the community, Deirdre also takes care of her own health and wellbeing and makes some extra cash dollar at the same time.

“I've always loved cycling. I remember seeing lads on Deliveroo  bikes and thinking that that was something I’d like to do.

“I saw an ad not long after, so I just decided to go for it.”

Being out on the bike is a fantastic way to keep fit, after her first day she "couldn't move for days" but now takes it all in her stride, or spin if you will.

While there are good and bad days on the bike, the positives far outweigh the negatives of the job.

“Some days it can be freezing for you can get soaked. I’ve fallen off my bike once or twice but the great thing is you just hop back up and keep going.

“I really enjoy it, I get to see parts of the city that I never would otherwise and have made some great friends for all different kinds of backgrounds.”

Most of Deirdre's co-cyclists are men, which "surprised" her.

"I definitely think that it's a great job for both men and women. You get out and about in air, there's just so many advantages.

"Or maybe I'm just mad," she laughs.

Her advice for any aspiring creative types out there? Just go for it.

“If you want to do something, all you need is to want to do it. There’s just this switch that decides ‘right, I’m going for this now’. Listen to it."

An artist with a spinning ambition, Deirdre is definitely one to watch this International Women's Day!

Time and time again, we find ourselves scrolling through Spotify looking for our favourite lady jams.

It's time consuming and kind of annoying – so we decided to do something about it!

We have set ourselves up on Spotify, and created the grooviest playlist ever (think all the best in 90s pop, plus Dua Lipa and the gals).

Currently, we have about 45 songs on it, but we are so open to suggestions. Have a song you love? Let us know, and sure we'll add it on for you.

We're also going to add 5 songs to the playlist every week, and we'll keep you updated.

This week, we created a poll asking what song you'd like added. The winner?

Torn, by Natalie Imbruglia! What a TUNE.

So we added that, and 4 other bangers for you!

Have a listen, and let us know what you think.

Between 5pm and 7pm this evening, NoLIta on South Great George's Street will be providing every woman with two drinks tokens, which can then be used at the bar at any time throughout the night.

A post on the bar's official Facebook page read: “This International Women's Day we want to toast to all the fantastic women in this city. So, we're giving all the ladies out there TWO free drinks in NoLIta this Thursday 8th March.”

“Simply rock up to NoLIta between 5pm-7pm to grab your two drink tokens that you can then claim at the bar any time that night. Who's in?”

Well, we know where we're heading for our after work drinks anyway – it'd be rude not to.

Losing a pet is utterly devastating. Those fluffy friends of ours become family, which makes saying goodbye so very painful.

Chrissy Teigen shared on Instagram yesterday that her and John's pooch Puddy has 'gone on to the pup heavens'.

The darling dog was named after David Puddy from Seinfeld because, in Chrissy's words, 'they both shared a love of sitting and staring at nothing'.

Today our baby, Puddy, has gone on to the pup heavens. John and I got Puddy in our first year of dating, when I convinced him half-birthday presents were a real thing. 10 years ago, on May 30th, I found the dog that would be there for us through every up, down, new house, new city, new tour, new travel. He welcomed new pups and loved on new babies and new bellies. He was there for everything. Every time I needed a taste tester, someone to kiss or needed to sob into his stinky rolls, he was there. It’s true what they say. We are their entire lives and it is the greatest shame that they can only bless us with a short spark of time in ours. I always knew I would lose a piece of me when he left us. I feel the hole now. I will love you forever, my boy. My heart aches. Thank you so much for everything, everything.

Puddy truly was there for them throughout everything, Chrissy explained in her emotional post: "He welcomed new pups and loved on new babies and new bellies. He was there for everything. Every time I needed a taste tester, someone to kiss or needed to sob into his stinky rolls, he was there."

Chrissy also shared an adorable photo of Puddy gussied up as a groom next to his blushing French bulldog bride, writing, "Not many people know this but Puddy is survived by his wife, Pippa. Yes, they were married."

We couldn't help but tear up, especially looking at the tender video and photos of Puddy with newborn Luna. It's clear he was such a big-hearted pup.

So, Storm Emma has well and truly passed, the supermarket shelves are packed once again and the 'bread gate' 2018 is all but a distant memory.

And while we're pretty sure the nation is sick to death of talking about slice pans, we're pretty sure Irish Pride's new product will get people's attention.

In partnership with the Marie Keating Foundation, Irish Pride have launched a 'pink loaf' to raise much-need funds for the foundation.

The Hi Fibre Plus loaf will be wrapped in bright pink packaging and is full of fibre, folic acid calcium and vitamins – and low in fat and sugar.

The money raised will help the Marie Keating Foundation continue to deliver cancer services to help families struggling because of cancer and raise awareness around the YourHealth:YourChoice campaign.

The campaign, fronted by celebrity power couple Ronan and Storm Keating, highlights the important message of maintaining a healthy diet and body weight to reduce your cancer risk and ties in perfectly with Irish Pride’s ethos to promote healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle.

“It is great to support such a worthy organisation as the Marie Keating Foundation; they are making great strides in cancer awareness and prevention each day,” said Declan Fitzgerald, Managing Director of Irish Pride.

“Many Irish families have unfortunately experienced cancer amongst their siblings, partner, friends and parents at some stage throughout their lives.”

You can purchase your ‘Hi-Fibre Plus’ pink loaf in stores across Ireland now.

Today, March 8, marks the 109th International Women's Day, and to coincide with commemoration for the movement of women's rights, period care brand Freda are advocating for the free provision of essential female hygiene products in the workplace.

In an age when on-site gyms, beer on tap and dedicated nap zones are enjoyed by employees of some of the world's biggest companies, it's a wonder why so many are failing to cater for the most basic needs of their female staff.

Pads, tampons amd menstrual cups are vital part of women's daily routines and are essential for full participation in day-to-day activities.

Research show that 86 per cent of women have experienced an unexpected period, leaving them stressed, anxious and embarrassed when they do not have an emergency stash of period products on hand.

“Societal taboos and stigma have meant that the menstrual needs of women have so far been overlooked. In 2018, period products should be regarded as an essential, and budgeted for accordingly – after all, we’re not expected to carry around our own toilet paper, or buy it from vending machines. Tampon smuggling has to stop!”, says Freda founder Affi Parvizi-Wayne

“Once you start thinking about it, it becomes a no-brainer, and it’s encouraging that progressive companies like Google and Spotify are beginning to take women’s needs into account. This small step sends a big message to employees”, adds Parvizi-Wayne.

With its Period Manifesto, Freda hope to encourage an open and honest discussion around periods and the needs of women, removing any stigma and normalising menstruation.

They advocate that:

  • Period products are an essential not a luxury

  • Periods are a sign of health

  • Periods are normal, not shameful

  • Periods are private, not secret

  • Transparency of ingredients for such an intimate product

  • Period products should be sustainable and responsible

With 2 billion women and girls menstruating monthly, it's astonishing that many still feel shamed and embarrassed by the natural occurrence.

By opening the conversation at work and at schools and by making period products freely and readily available to all, we can change old attitudes and break taboos once and for all.

Our hopes and dreams are often moulded by what we see as children, from images we notice on the TV to the toys that we used to play with.

Barbie just announced that they're releasing over a dozen new dolls of incredible female role models in order to show young girls that they can be anything. We love this celebration of heroic women!

The dolls are coming out in honour of International Women's Day tomorrow, Barbie has noted, and they have said on Twitter that 'we are committed to shining a light on empowering female role models past and present in an effort to inspire more girls'.

So who are these wonderful women we'll see as Barbies now? In the realm of sports, we have Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim, boxing champ Nicola Adams Obe, fencing champion Ibtihaj Muhammad, Olympic volleyball player Hui Ruoqi, Italian soccer player Sara Gama, and gymnastics champ Gabby Douglas.

As far as the arts go, the legendary Frida Kahlo, filmmaker Patty Jenkins, journalist Martyna Wojciechowska, principal ballerina Misty Copeland, actress and philanthropist Xiaotong Guan, film director Ava Duvernay, prima ballerina Yuan Yuan Tan, and designer and entrepreneur Leyla Piedayesh are all represented.

As well, Bindi Irwin will have her own doll in recognition of her conservationist efforts. Aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart, model and body activist Ashley Graham, NASA mathematician and physicist Katherine Johnson, and renowned chef Hélène Darroze are all going to be in Barbie form to give little girls diverse role models to look up to.

The campaign also encourages others to share their own heroes with the hashtag #MoreRoleModels.

Some of the women recognised took to social media to share the joy they felt at being represented as Barbies.

Misty Copeland even shared her own role model, writing on Twitter, "Excited that @Barbie is celebrating #InternationalWomensDay by honoring global role models, because you can't be what you can't see. My role model is ballerina Raven Wilkinson. Who is yours? Share with #MoreRoleModels!"

"Ahh! I'm so happy to be honoured as a @Barbie Shero alongside these incredible women! #InternationalWomensDay #Barbie," Chloe Kim tweeted excitedly.

Her Twitter feed certainly made her one of the most relatable athletes during the 2018 Winter Olympics when the 17-year-old shared on the social media site that she wanted ice cream in between qualifying runs.

Patty Jenkins, who made Time's shortlist for 2017 Person of the Year, tweeted, "Congrats to these incredible women. So honoured to share this moment with you!"

We are so proud of these women and happy to celebrate our heroes in the lead-up to International Women's Day!

While the adverse weather last week caused delays and difficulties across the country, one of the most wonderful parts of Storm Emma was seeing how communities came together to keep people safe.

Emergency service workers especially worked around the clock to help others.

Cork hair salon Fenns Hair Design has decided to recognise these dedicated people by offering a free blow-dry to gardaí, paramedics, prison officers, medical staff, members of the fire brigade, and army personnel.

All they ask is that emergency service workers call them up before coming and arrive with their ID. The offer remains in place until Friday.

"We had the CHOICE of whether to come to work or not and some of us enjoyed some snow. But as I said we had a CHOICE, you didn't!" Fenns Hair Design wrote on their Facebook page.

What a wonderful way to spread the love!

If you or anyone you know falls under the requirements for a free blow-dry, you can call Fenns Hair Design at 021 427 9247.

And a big thank you to all of those who braved the snow and ice to assist others! We appreciate your commitment and hard work.

We all have annoying habits, whether you're a nail biter or a knuckle cracker.

And when we enter relationships, for the most part, our annoying habits just become part of who we are.

Likewise, we tend to just get used to our S/Os annoying habits!

Cuddles, a pillow fight, and pancakes in bed make these cabin couple portraits captured by photographers Karina & Maks some of the sweetest ones yet.

However, there are some things that we just just CANNOT move past.

According to a relationship compatibility survey carried out by YouGov, seven out of ten people admitted they would be uncomfortable dating someone who cared less than they did about being “clean and tidy.”

So basically, poor hygiene is unacceptable.

That being said, apparently only 21 per cent would consider this a dump-worthy issue, which I honestly find offensive.

50 Questions That Will Make You Fall Even Deeper In Love With Your Person

Along with disparities in attitude, a lack of intelligent conversation was found to be an issue, with 53 per cent listing this as a turn off.

Well, obviously!

But it turns out even the nerdiest among us cannot avoid the scrutiny: 20 percent of the surveyed adults said they would be bothered by their partner having higher IQ than them.

We're not sure what to think
