Is nothing sacred?

First came the avacado latté, then people began to drink their coffee from hollowed out carrots and now this – Coffee caviar.

It's the latest in a long line of bizarre food trends to take over our Instagram feeds, and we're not convinced.

The little blobs of coffee resemble groups of pre-mature tadpoles waiting to hatch, and we're just not sure we can look past that.

Once a  restaurant delicacy, the foodies of Instragram have now taken it upon themselves to bring coffee caviar to the masses and have been adding it to homemade pudding and tiramius.

According to coffee manufacturers, Lavazza, this is how they're made:

‘Using a syringe, small drops of the coffee and alginate mixture is added to the diluted calcium chloride.

‘The result is lots of little balls which create a myriad of tiny explosions on the palate.’

Hmm?

Think we'll stick to our flat whites for the moment, thanks.

The first day of my Leaving Cert coincided with my 17th birthday.

Having started school at four-years-old and skipped Transition Year, I was one of the youngest people in my year and spent all of 6th year as an awkward 16-year-old.

This fact coupled with my compulsion to throw sickies and bunk off at every possible opportunity meant that my parents (and my teachers) weren’t exactly confident in my capabilities.

Would I even show up? Or would I do what I did in previous years and decide to opt out of summer exams ‘due to an ear infection’ or sidestep the Mocks with a bout of Bronchitis?

13 years on, I can confirm that I showed up and was then accepted into my first-choice course.

And didn't go.

Instead, I deferred my place and as my friends began their first semester, I worked in retail.

But as my first year in university approached twelve months later, I began my degree with an air of trepidation.

And then promptly dropped out.

I wasn’t ready for university. That’s right, after a year out and more than half way through my first ’deferred’ semester, I still wasn’t ready.

For a teenager who barely managed to make it to class when it was mandatory, setting me free in an environment that allows you to create your own schedule was playing with fire.

And I was positively ablaze.

So, I left.

After spending another year working, I returned to the same university and decided to choose three different subjects.

Having originally opted for English, Psychology and Sociology, I decided to wildcard it and go with German, Anthropology and Biology.

Having done French all through school, I decided to ‘challenge’ myself with German.

Having never heard of Anthropology, I decided to ‘enlighten’ myself with the Humanities subject.

And having gotten the lowest grade in Biology in my Leaving Cert, I decided to… well… I don’t actually know what I was thinking with that one.

I know; who leaves me in charge of my own life?

And yet, after deferring my place the first time around, dropping out the second time around, and forcing myself out of my comfort zone the third time around, I spent the next four years learning a new language and discovering a real interest in Anthropology.

(The less said about Biology the better, but hey, I got to drop that sucker after the first year.)

My undergraduate degree lasted four years, with one spent in Vienna.

Now, I’d be lying if I said changing direction meant I became one of those students who established societies, initiated study groups or even showed up every day.

I still regularly skipped lectures, often found myself wandering into the SU only to leave two days later, once got 4 per cent in a German exam, and was forced on more than one occasion to introduce myself to a lecturer, but there was a certain drive which simply wasn’t there the first time around.

I was older, more confident in myself and knew that the onus lay with me, and me only. We all know college isn’t for everyone, but it’s also important to remember that college mightn’t be for everyone at that particular time.

I mean, my friends were going into their final year when I was being brought on orientation around a college I had registered at twice before, but I mosied on.

Such was my interest in Cultural Anthropology, I decided to do a two-year MA after graduating, spending another year in Vienna.

I graduated with a 1st, and was advised to look into pursuing a PhD.

True to form, and despite the fact I thoroughly enjoyed my MA, I decided that I had taken the wrong route entirely, and eight years after completing the Leaving Cert lamented the fact I hadn't done a course in journalism.

Why didn't I think of that back when I was filling out my CAO? Why do I do everything arseways? What is life?

After spending a worrying amount of time glaring at my graduation photo, I decided to use my research in contemporary media and women in modern society to navigate my way into a writing career.

And I managed it.

Look, I’m (obviously) by no means a Steve ’I dropped out of college at 19’ Jobs, not lest because… what is a computer?

But while I spent years agonising over my decision to first defer, then drop out and finally return, ultimately my haphazard, ‘what in the name of Jaysus am I doing?' approach worked for me.

Yes, I graduated long after my friends, yes I entered the workforce years after them as well, and yes, the kids doing their Leaving Cert today were in Junior Infants when I was doing mine, but the advice still stands.

Your future isn't determined by your Leaving Cert, nor is it even determined by the first course you choose, or even the second.

You'll get where you're meant to be eventually… even if your chosen poet didn't come up today.

If there's one song to get us on our feet it definitely has to be Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom.

The song always makes a resurgence every couple of years, and this weekend a few lads from Gloucestershire in the UK decided to belt it from the rooftops.

The literal rooftop of their car, that is…

Driving by the streets of Cheltenham, the friends blasted music from speakers which were strapped to the roof of a car.

They played the iconic Vengaboys track and reminded us that, sometimes, all you need to a bit of 90s pop to bring everyone together.

One of the men behind the impromptu street party was Kieran Chapman, and he said that his friends just wanted to unite everyone.

“We were just messing about, and we thought we would do something to bring people together," Chapman told Gloucestershire Live.

"One of my friends is a DJ so we put some speakers on the roof of my car. So we drove around and people started to dance when we stopped. They were jumping on my car, but I didn’t care – there was no damage.”

The lads went on to play a few more tunes during the night (look through the comments), and we have to say, we wish we were there.

And in case you're interested, the Vengaboys totally approved.

A man has been charged with murder after infecting his partner with HIV, which developed into AIDS.

Ronald Murdock, 51, from Ohio, has had his bail set to $1.5million after the death of his long-term girlfriend Kimberly Klempner.

It is alleged that the couple had unprotected sex when he knew he was HIV positive, but he did not tell her.

According to Ohio law, those diagnosed with HIV are required to disclose the fact to their sexual partners

He stood accused of not disclosing his HIV-positive status to Kimberly, ultimately leading to her death.

'By the time she found out and by the time everything was said and done, it was way too late,' Kimberly's son told Cosmo.

'She would have done anything for that man. And for him not to come out in the beginning and tell her what was going on was not right.'

Ronald Murdock faces a life sentence of imprisonment if found guilty of the crimes.

According to the HSE, if you have HIV, it is important that your current sexual partner or any sexual partners you have had since being exposed to infection are tested and treated.

'If you do not tell your sexual partners and you have unsafe sex and infect someone, they could prosecute you.'

So, if your skin care regime is leaving much to be desired, it may be high time you tackled those pesky complexion issues from the inside out.

We all know the age old saying ‘you are what you eat’, and when it comes to the condition of our skin, it could not be more true.

Whether you’ve got dry, oily or combination skin, the nutritional value of the food you eat can play a huge role in keeping your face looking fresh and hydrated.

Here are just a few foods to consider introducing to your diet.

Chocolate

Yes, you read that right. Giving in to those cocoa cravings could actually be good for your complexion.

According to a 2015 study in the Journal of Nutrition, the consumption of cocoa flavonols can reduce some of the tell-tale signs of aging such as age spots and wrinkles. Flavonals are also powerful antioxidants that work to protect your skin from the damaging effects of UV rays.

Of course, to get most benefits you’ll need to opt for a chocolate that’s at least 70 per cent cocoa, but even just a few squares a day will leave your skin hydrated and glowing from within.

Walnuts

These little guys are absolutely loaded with copper – a mineral known to boost collagen production.

They are also high in omega-3 essential fatty acids, which according to Dr David Bank, a dermatologist in Mount Kisco, New York, can help improve the skin’s elasticity.

So, next time you’re feeling peckish, why not opt for a handful of walnuts? Your skin will thank you later.

Green Tea

OK, by this stage we know that there is no end to the health benefits offered by this miracle drink, but did you know that it can actually be used to reduce redness and inflammation?

Green tea is extremely high in antioxidants that help fight the root of the issue.

What’s more, an investigation by German scientists discovered that the polyphenols contained in green tea may actually offer protection against UV radiation.

Aim to drink at least two cups daily for optimal effect.

Kindey Beans

These tasty legumes are loaded with zinc, and studies have indicated a link between blemishes and low zinc levels.

So, if your skin is going through a rough patch at the moment, a small serving of kidney beans everyday could be just what’s needed to keep you in the clear.

Peppers

According to Dr Jessica Wu, a dermatologist in Los Angeles and the author of Feed Your Face, “Women who eat green and yellow vegetables regularly tend to have fewer wrinkles, especially around the eyes.”

Who’s going to argue with that?

As well as that, studies have found that caronteniods, the antioxidant found in orange and yellow vegetables, can actually help decrease the skin’s sensitivity to the sun, and God knows that’s something us Irish gals need.

Gin lovers, listen up, because one very delightful-sounding gin has just been crowned the Best Gin in the UK.

Brighton Gin, handmade in (you guessed it) Brighton, has been given the esteemed accolade, and now we're gasping to get our hands on a bottle.

The gin received the grand title at The People's Drinks Awards, where the public blind tasted numerous gins and chose the most delicious.

'Brighton is such a creative, pioneering, free-thinking place, with a long-standing heritage of invention and pleasure seeking and a cast of notorious, mould-breaking characters throughout its history,' founder of Brighton Gin, Kathy Caton told Cosmo.

'With Brighton Gin, we wanted to create the absolute top quality spirit this city deserves and we’re ecstatic that people across the UK have voted us as the country’s best gin.'

A post shared by The Gin Baker (@theginbaker) on

Brighton Gin is made with 100% British organic wheat spirit, which we re-distill with juniper, fresh orange and lime peel, locally-grown coriander seed and milk thistle. Yum.

The gin is hand crafted in Brighton (duh) but there are more than a few online stockists who can deliver the smooth beverage straight to your door if you don't happen to be visiting the UK anytime soon.

Harvey Nichols, The Gin Box Shop, Vineyards Direct, Gin Festival, the Gin Kiosk, Craft Gins and Gin Parlour all stock the strong stuff, and you can even get it on Amazon.

We'll be waiting for our package in the mail like…

OK, she's no Whitney Houston or Beyonce, but Britney can sing.

From Baby One More Time to If U Seek Amy, the pop princess has released some absolute belters over the years, but many still bash her for her heavily autotuned vocals.

Now, we love Britney (in fact, we wanted to BE her as a kids… pre 2007 obvs) and will listen to her music without hesitation.

But in recent years she has been criticised heavily on her live performances and TV gigs.

However, a stripped-down version of Toxic has just been leaked and it's not too shabby.

Sure, the high notes are tricky, but Brit Brit gives a damn good performance.

Also, have you seen the moves she pulls on stage? Nobody would be able to keep their voice in check busting out those dances.

Britney, we salute you. *Listens to Toxic on repeat*

Ed Sheeran's highly anticipated episode of Carpool Karaoke is officially here, and it's just as epic as we expected.

Ed opened up about his social media sabbatical to James Cordon in the episode, revealing that he has only had a phone for two weeks since he took time off to travel.

According to Ed: 'I actually don't have a phone anymore. It's just what it would have been like 30 years ago for our parents.'

'I'd wake up every morning and there would be like 50 messages and none of the would say "hey, how are you?" it would be like "can I have this? Can you lend me this? Can you do this? Can I get this? and it was fine at the beginning but it just got really really draining by the end of it.'

A post shared by Ed Sheeran (@teddysphotos) on

Of course, the pair sang a myriad of Ed's best tunes, and the lad's harmonies on Ed's tune Sing is actually pretty epic.

There is even an impromptu rendition of a One Direction track mid-way through.

The best part of the entire episode? Probably when Ed managed to fit 55 Malteasers into his mouth at the same time before chucking them up at the side of the road. Standard.
