Alicia Keys

Former First Lady and current leader of the entire world Michelle Obama delighted her fans and celebrities alike by making a surprise appearance at the Grammys.

Obama showed up and stole the show by appearing alongside fellow female legends Lady Gaga, host Alicia Keys, Jada Pinkett Smith and J-Lo to emphasise how much music means to them.

When she first showed her dazzling face onstage, many in the audience didn't immediately register who she was, Once she began speaking however, the crowd LOST IT.

She had only declared the words, "From the Motown records I wore out on the South Side …", when she was interrupted by hysterical cheering. I mean, we'd all lose our chill if she turned up in Dublin airport.

"All right — we got a show to do," she said as she tried to dissipate the clapping, to no avail.

She referenced Beyoncé, naturally, and Motown as her influences. Could she BE more inspiring?

"From the Motown records I wore out on the South Side to the Who Run the World songs that fuelled me through this last decade, music has always helped me tell my story, and I know that's true for everybody here."

"Whether we like country or rap or rock, music helps us share ourselves, our dignity and sorrows, our hopes and joys. It allows us to hear one another, to invite each other in. Music shows us that all of it matters."

"Every story within every voice, every note within every song. Is that right, ladies?" THAT'S SO RIGHT, MICHELLE.

She later tweeted that she was "thrilled" to be present, celebrating the power of music. Never stop making surprise appearances, gal, we need you.

Taylor Swift has taken her fair share of time out of the spotlight, especially when it comes to awards ceremonies.

We CRAVE to see her perform, or even just to appear as her usual, dancing self. However, despite the fact that she's nominated for Best Vocal Album at the Grammys this year, the Reputation singer apparently WON'T attend.

Variety are claiming that both Swift and Maroon 5 won't be in attendance, though we think the general public will be more upset about Tay-Tay following Maroon 5's underwhelming Super Bowl half-time show.

Taylor is facing some stiff competition on the night, with some huge names in her category to win the Best Vocal Album gong.

Swift is up against Camila Cabelo for Camila, Kelly Clarkson for Meaning Of Life, Ariana Grande for Sweetener (YAS), Shawn Mendes' self-titled album and Pink's Beautiful Trauma. Look at all those INCREDIBLE gals. Plus Shawn.

We wish Taylor was performing, her Netflix Reputation tour show was INSANELY good, but after the VMAs back in 2009, we don't blame her for taking space from competition and drama. She's been absolutely slayin' the game this year.

In other Grammy news, K-pop sensations BTS will be presenting an award, much to the delight of their fans, and are up for a Grammy themselves.

Not much has been heard from the Album of the Year-nominated Drake; his fans are still wondering if the Toronto-born rapper will perform at or even attend the Grammys. He's ran into trouble before with awards ceremonies…

Confirmed performers so far include Camila Cabello, Cardi B, Miley Cyrus, H.E.R., Ricky Martin, Post Malone with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shawn Mendes and Janelle Monae.

Grammy-winner Alicia Keys will be hosting the 61st annual Grammy Awards on February 10, we're super hungry for this drama; it's sure to be quite a show with Cardi B in attendance.

BIG news…. (check my story)

A post shared by Alicia Keys (@aliciakeys) on

The 37-year-old took to Instagram Stories to announce the exciting news.

She said, ''I know what it feels like to be on that stage. I know what it feels like to be proud of the work that you've put in and to be recognized for it. I just feel grateful that I'm able to bring that light and that energy. This is a first. This is amazing. I think it's perfect timing."

No stranger to Grammys (she has 15 – yes, you read that right) she's the first woman to take to the stage since Queen Latifah did in 2005.

Alicia also made a Youtube video on her channel called, "I'M HOSTING THE 2019 GRAMMYS" to talk about the news and show behind-the scenes footage of her attending rehearsals and dress fittings, as well as telling her family the news.

She said, ''Honestly, I feel really excited. I feel really good about it, because I feel like it's the perfect opportunity for me to give the light back and lift people up, especially all the young women who are nominated.''

She continued, ''Like, to me, it feels like sister vibes. And who's the best sister on planet Earth? ME!"

The Grammys announced the full list of nominations in December with acts such as Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande and Cardi B getting nods.

The show will take place February 10 at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.

It's been an interesting year – from Brexit to Trump and numerous terrorist atrocities, globally we face increasing uncertainty.

But it hasn't all been bad news. In fact, we've crowned eight celebrities our 'heroines of the year' for being shining lights in a lot of darkness…

Michelle Obama, 52:

From speeches that captivated the world to her head-turning fashion, the First Lady will be sorely missed from the White House. No wonder there's already a campaign underway to have her run for US president in 2020.

The Duchess Of Cambridge, 34:

Sure she's privileged, but being married to a royal means a life in the harshest of spotlights. Arguably the world's most photographed – and thus, critiqued – woman, we applaud Kate for just getting on with it. She has evidently embraced being a mum too: far from being royal brats, George and Charlotte are impeccably behaved in public.

Annalise Murphy, 26:

The Rathfarnham sailor nabbed a silver medal for Ireland at the Olympics – but in the two years prior to that incredible achievement she struggled to perform at her best. She finished a frustrating fourth in London 2012 and in the aftermath her confidence took a knock. For getting back in the saddle and not giving up, we salute you, Annalise.

Iskra Lawrence, 26:

A plus-sized model with A LOT to say on the fashion industry, Iskra is also an ambassador for the National Eating Disorders Association in the UK. And a time when a lot of social media stars feel compelled to edit their posts, we (and her 3m followers) love that Ms Lawrence refuses to do so.

Hillary Clinton, 69:

Agree or disagree with her policies – there's no doubt that she's broken down a lot of boundaries for women in politics, still very much an industry where women struggle to be heard. That and her concession speech was nothing short of inspirational.

Alicia Keys, 35:

We love her for her no-nonsense attitude; during the summer she announced in a letter that she had reconsidered her approach to cosmetics. Since then, she's turned up at a load of high-profile events and appearances entirely fresh-faced and makeup free.

Saoirse Ronan, 22:

Being nominated for an Oscar aged 13 would set a lot of actors up for tabloid-infused, wild-child future. Not so Saoirse – who earlier this year nabbed her second Oscar nomination for Brooklyn. Still just 22, she continues to change the way Hollywood considers young female actors.

Winnie Harlow, 22:

Winnie hasn't allowed her vitiligo to dampen her dreams. Indeed, the Canadian model is now one of the industry's most recognisable faces. She's also a valuable contributor to discussion on the self-esteems issues young people today face.

She’s an outspoken feminist, an advocate for ditching makeup and now Alicia Keys has revealed herself as an opponent to the Disney classics.

In a new interview with Net-A-Porter’s The Edit, the Girl On Fire singer claimed she doesn’t like her sons watching Snow White because of the way in which its female protagonist is presented.

“I feel like it’s by design that I’m raising boys; like there’s a reason. I really feel that,” she said of her relationship with six-year-old Egypt and ten-month-old Genesis.

“They say that every child learns from their mother — it’s ingrained from babyhood.”

“Have you watched Snow White lately?” she asked.  “I get real funky about the classics; I don’t like [my sons] watching it.  It’s totally sexist, misogynistic – she’s cleaning for seven dwarfs.”

Clarifying that her issue lies with the way Snow White’s role is portrayed as opposed to the role itself, the 35-year-old said: “There’s nothing wrong with a woman who chooses to stay at home with her family, it’s a hard-ass job, but it’s the way it’s spoken about.”

Fame and fortune may come with many perks, but not being able to venture past your own front door without undergoing an hour’s worth of intensive contouring isn’t one of them.

And while many celebrities give in to the superficial expectations of their respective industries, earlier this year singer-songwriter Alicia Keys chose to ditch the slap in favour of a freer life.

The 35-year-old’s decision – the details of which she outlined in a post on Lenny Letter – initially received widespread praise, but unfortunately for Alicia – and women in general – she has since been subject to a lot criticism online.

On Sunday night the best-selling author stunned in a bohemian style full-length dress at the MTV Video Music Awards ceremony in New York but despite looking amazing, the star’s critics quickly came out in force to shame her makeup-free face.

Examples of the comments written about at the singer include: “I understand Alicia Keys wants to do the ‘no makeup’ thing but baby girl at least get some concealer and lashes.”

And: “Fill in the brows and a little bit of tinted lip balm.  And she’ll be straight.”

Meanwhile, the mother of two was also accused of straight up lying about the fact she went au naturel.

One Twitter user wrote: “Alicia Keys is wearing makeup.  JUST SAYING”.  While another said: “We all know you wear bb cream, sis.  Also, how does no makeup correlate to this haggard look you’re running around with.”

Yesterday the American activist addressed her critics on social media by sharing a photo of her makeup free self blowing a kiss at the camera along with the caption: “Ya’ll, me choosing to be makeup free doesn’t mean I’m anti-makeup.  Do you!”

So far the post has been retweeted 58,000 times and has received 100,000 likes.

It’s pretty clear the No One singer is more than happy with her new beauty regime as she has already vowed to maintain her natural look for the upcoming series of The Voice.

You go girl!

Rihanna has just gone and secured herself a place on American version of the talent show, The Voice.

And so we all assumed that mean she'd be a judge.

NBC revealed the news this week that the singer will be appearing on the forthcoming new season of the show.

However – and here comes the twist, the role is not one of a judge, but she will serve as a "key advisor" to judges Gwen Stefani, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Pharrell Williams.

Rihanna will be in good company though: former advisors include Alicia Keys and Miranda Lambert.

"This is one of music's true supervisors coming on board to influence the lives and careers of the performers," NBC said in the press release.

The show is to air its ninth season from next month and we're hoping with Rihanna on board it will produce some AMAZING super stars.

One of our favourite performers, the hugely talent musician Alicia Keys, welcomed her second child into the world this weekend and decided to share the news with her fans in the sweetest way possible!

Taking to Instagram, the overjoyed mum posted an image of two adorable baby footprints. Excuse us while we melt.

The snap also included the name, weight, birth date and birth time of her second son so we know that Genesis Ali Dean arrived on Saturday weighing a healthy 6 lbs 5 oz and that his beautiful mum Alicia couldn’t be happier.

The Empire State of Mind singer captioned the shot: “The joy of joy is joy! It’s a boy!! We are so grateful! #blessings.” Her excitement is almost contagious, right?!

Alicia and husband of four years music producer, Swiss Beatz, welcomed their first child Egypt Daoud Ibarr in 2010 and judging by the 33-year-old Grammy winner’s online post, she’s overjoyed at having given little Egypt a younger brother and playmate!

Egypt’s mum told Access Hollywood back in October that he was ‘so excited’ to meet his sibling so we ‘re sure the arrival of little Genesis may be his best Christmas present to date.

Congratulations to Alicia and her gorgeous family!
