Yearly Archives: 2018

If the great gin boom of 2017 brought us anything, it was a plethora of Irish gin festivals.

With the gin trend going nowhere, it's no surprise that the coming summer months are playing host to another, affordable gin event.

Bargain super brand Aldi are bringing delicious, bespoke and on-budget gin festival to their stores on May 31st.

Launching in 130 stores nationwide, Aldi are introducing five delicious, infused Irish gins to their shelves – that's our summer pre drinks sorted.

The new gins include Brennan’s Old House Gin, inspired by the distillery's surrounding meadows of heather, fields of corn and hedgerows of ripe frocken berries, 'capturing a little bit of Irish magic in every bottle'.

Each “Crock of Gin” is a limited edition, produced in small batches, and available from Aldi for a not too shabby €29.99.

The subtly fragrant Tower Gin, €29.99, has chocolate-orange sweetness emerges from the organic cacao and orange peel.

An Aldi exclusive, Ha’penny Rhubarb Gin, also €29.99 per 70cl has notes of rhubarb, juniper and lemon peel followed by subtle hints of black pepper.

'Initially there is an intense rhubarb and herbaceous body, rounding to a pleasant lingering touch of blackberry, leaving an unforgettable flavour to the palate,' according to the folks at Aldi.

One for the patriotic, Aldi is also stocking St Patrick’s Classic Juniper Potato Gin.

Described as having a floral undertone, the gin uses the freshness from the potatoes to create a unique flavour.

Lastly, Boyle’s Raspberry Blush gin, for €24.99 combines the summery smell of fresh raspberries and pine with a hint of spice.

We'll see you in the queue.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have stepped out for their first appearance together as newlyweds, and we have to say, they couldn't have chosen a better occasion.

The happy couple attended a garden party held in honour of Prince Charles' birthday.

While the Prince of Wales doesn't turn 70 until November 14, because he has a milestone birthday this year he's due to enjoy some extra celebrations this year. "How very Royal!" Harry quipped in the speech he delivered for his dear dad.

A post shared by Kensington Palace (@kensingtonroyal) on

Meghan Markle looked gorgeous at the party in a pale dress from Goat, a London-based label, and the Telegraph reports that she topped off her look with a dainty Philip Treacey hat.

She also shared a cute moment with the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall. The three all tried not to laugh when the Duke of Sussex's speech was interrupted by a wandering bee.

“That bee really got me," the 33-year-old joked as he swatted the pesky insect away.

During the speech, Harry congratulated his father on his extensive charity work.

"It really is amazing to see so many of you here today for this family celebration," he said.

"I say ‘family’ because this is a chance for us to honour The Prince of Wales's work over the last 40 plus years, with all of his charities, patronages and military associations – and, as you all know, my father views all of your organisations like an extended family."

The newly married Prince also thanked emergency services workers for their invaluable work during the Manchester tragedy, which occurred a year ago yesterday.

"I would like us to take a moment to remember all those affected by the tragic events at the Manchester Arena a year ago. We are fortunate to have over 250 representatives from the Emergency Services here today," the Duke of Sussex said.

He added, "So, on behalf of my family and everyone here, I would like to say thank you to the Emergency Services and all those who supported the injured and affected."

Harry shared more admiring words for his father, too, saying, "His enthusiasm and energy are truly infectious; it has certainly inspired William and I to get involved in issues we care passionately about and to do whatever we can to make a difference.

“In fact, many of the issues William and I now work on are subjects we were introduced to by our father growing up.

“His passion and dedication are remarkable and seeing so many of you here today, I cannot fail but to be in awe of the drive he has had for so many years, to contribute to the enrichment of society both in this country and around the world.”

Charles and his son embraced, sharing kisses on each cheek after the heartfelt speech ended.

Their bond is so sweet, and it's wonderful to see Meghan readily embraced as part of the royal family.

Whether you're the parent or passenger, a screaming baby on a flight is fun for no one.

Former One Direction star Niall Horan got the cutest gift during a ten-hour flight.

The singer received a goodie bag from new parents.

Niall took to Twitter to document the event.

The fathers had shared a picture of their two-week-old baby Marit on the card.

The dads wrote on the card:

"Hi Stranger, my name is Marit. Today I am 18 days old. I'm flying home to Europe with my dads. This is my first flight ever. I will do my utmost to be on my best behaviour to ensure that you have a peaceful flight."

The message continued with:

"I would like to apologise in advance if – I for any reason lose my cool, my temper, my ears hurt or my tummy gets fussy. I think my dads are more nervous than I am, so they made you this goodie bag."

The singer captioned the Tweet:

"Had the coolest little goodie bag on the plane with this letter enclosed. Marit was quiet as a mouse for 10 hours. Goodluck to both dads."

Niall didn't disclose the contents of the goodie bag, but we think it's the sweetest gesture.

Marit is just gorgeous! Well done to the family for their first successful flight.

A new study has revealed the damaging effects fasting diets have on your health.

They shared that diets like the 5:2 diet can increase your risk of diabetes.

The 5:2 diet involves restricting your calorie consumption to 25 percent of your energy twice a week, and eating regularly for the remaining five days of the week.

During the two days of fast women typically consume 500 calories, with the average man consuming 600 calories, meaning you can eat three small meals a day.

Some people may fast completely for two days.

During a talk at the European Society of Endocrinology annual meeting, the team revealed that these fasting diets can have a dangerous impact on your insulin.

Author of the study, Ana Bonassa explained: “Despite the weight loss, intermittent fasting diets may actually damage the pancreas and affect insulin function in normal healthy individuals, which could lead to diabetes and serious health issues.”

The team looked at the effects fasting every other day has on the body of adult rats and also looked at their insulin function over three months.

During the study, the team noticed a decrease in the rats’ body weight, however, they also found that the cells that release insulin in the pancreas were damaged.

The team understand that diets like the 5:2 diet work when it comes to weight loss, but they may cause long-term medical issues in the future.

The team said that further research is needed to see how humans would be affected by fasting diets, adding that they will look at how these kinds of diets affect insulin and pancreas function in humans.

A GoFundMe page has raised over €385,000 in 24 hours for the family of Jastine Valdez.

The fundraiser was set-up by Outreach Ireland and they exceeded their €10,000 target.

The group works with the Filipino community in Ireland and all the funds will assist Jastine's parents.

The figure of €85,000 is set to increase with all the generous donations.

In the GoFundMe description said:

"Jastine Valdez was an only child taken from her parents at the age of 24 in the most unimaginable circumstance. Born in the Philippines she came to Ireland to study and to join her parents who are now naturalised Irish citizens. Both parents work and are active in the community."

"This page was set up to facilitate all of those who wish to offer support and sympathy to the family of Jastine Valdez following her devastating death."

The statement also added about how the funds would be used.

Additionally, all donations would be audited and verified by a solicitor.

"Any and all funds raised on this page will go directly to the parents of Jastine Valdez to help them in the weeks and months ahead."

"The transfer and oversight of the funds to the Valdez family will be documented and made public. A Dublin based solicitor has offered to oversee and audit (pro bono) the account and will verify all funds are paid directly to the Valdez family."

The 24-year-old was abducted by 40-year-old Mark Hennessy.

A Gardai investigation recovered her body on Monday afternoon.

Mr Hennessy was fatally injured by Gardai on Sunday.

Jastine's parents Danillo and Teresita moved to Ireland in 1985 from the province of Nueva Vizcaya.

Teresita worked as a housekeeper, whilst her husband took a job in gardening.

Upon moving to Enniskerry, Danillo found a job in maintenance close by to the Powerscourt estate.

Meanwhile, Teresita manages a house in connection with the estate.

Speaking to the Irish Independent her friend Katrina Mamuric, described Jastine as caring and loving.

“We used to live in the same hometown and we know the family really well.'

“She’s very loving, caring, just genuinely very nice,' she said at a vigil held in Bray.

“We’ve known each other since we were kids.'

“She was looking forward to having a better life in Ireland,” she added.

A vigil was held in Bray in memory of Jastine, and the Blessed Sacrament Chapel organised a service for the 24-year-old on Monday.

Channel 4's Derry Girls earned itself quite the following when it hit out screens earlier this year.

Set in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, its laugh-out-loud one-liners and nostalgia drenched soundtrack proved a big hit on both sides of the Irish sea, and a second season has already been commissioned for 2019.

And while that seems like a lifetime away, it now looks like could be seeing the girls back on the box a lot sooner than we thought.

Cast members  Jamie-Lee O'Donnell, Louisa Harland, Nicola Coughlan, Dylan Llewellyn and Saoirse-Monica Jackson are set to appear on Channel 4's Crystal Maze celebrity special this summer.

The rules are simple. Maze Master Richard Ayoade will guide the girls through the Aztec, Medieval, Futuristic and Industrial Zones as they attempt 30 brand new challenges in the hope of collecting all-important crystals.

The teams will then swap their crystals for time inside the legendary Crystal Dome.

Other celebrities taking part in the series of specials include Countdown’s Rachel Riley, TV personality Katie Price, and YouTube star Alfie Deyes.

The Crystal Maze celebrity specials are due to air this June on Channel 4.

Vogue Williams has revealed that her old anxiety trouble has been rearing it's head again since becoming pregnant.

She and her fiancé, Made in Chelsea star Spencer Matthews are expecting their first child together.

The 32-year-old model and TV presenter admitted in and interview that her pregnancy has aggravated her battle with anxiety.

"I get quite bad anxiety and it's come back a bit while I've been pregnant," she told Closer magazine.  "I don't know why I have it – it's just general life anxiety. If I knew what it was about, that would be the first step in getting rid of it. But exercise keeps that in check and makes you feel better about yourself. It's more under control now than it has been in the past.''

But there are other side-affects of her pregnancy that she's happier to indulge in- cravings:

''I'm having a lot of cravings – I can't get enough of dairy. Ice cream, milk, yoghurt, cheese – I want it all. Orange juice is also a big one – and, weirdly, my mum said she craved orange juice when she was pregnant with me.''

Williams, who was previously married to former Westlife member Brain McFadden, is already planning a family-filled future with Matthews.

''We always wanted to have a baby before a wedding and obviously right now the baby is the priority. But I'm excited about getting married. It will probably be next year and we want a big party.

''In five years' time, I want to have had baby number two with Spencer. I want a family and I just want us to be happy, which I'm sure we will be.''

It's the update we have all been waiting for!

Instagram is planning to add a mute button.

The new feature will allow you to mute someone's posts, without unfollowing them.

According to the Independent, Instagram wrote about the update in a blog post saying:

"When you mute an account, you can still see posts on their profile page and get notified about comments or posts you're tagged in.

"The accounts you mute will not be aware that you've muted them. You can always unmute an account to get their posts back in your feed.

"To mute an account, tap the … menu in the corner of the post. From there, you can choose whether to mute posts or mute posts and stories from an account. You can also mute posts and stories by pressing and holding on a story in your tray, or from a profile."

According to the social media giant, a 'small amount' of iOS users will be the first to test out the mute button.

It will then be made available to all Instagram accounts in the next couple of weeks.

Muting people's stories has been an option on the site.

However, this is the first time it will be possible to do it on a newsfeed.

Muting newsfeeds and tweets without unfollowing people have been a regular feature on both Facebook and Twitter.

At last, it looks like Instagram has heard our cries!

The final countdown to the referendum to Repeal the 8th Amendment to the constitution is on, with just three sleeps to go before Ireland gets the opportunity to maintain or do away with the legislation which prevents women from legally acquiring abortion healthcare on Irish soil.

If you are planning to vote in the upcoming referendum (which we encourage everyone to do so) then there are a few things to keep in mind before your stroll, drive or public transport commute to your polling station.

The polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm so make the time to get down there before or after work, or during lunch time.

A post shared by Together for Yes (@together4yes) on

First up – do not wear a Repeal or Save the 8th jumper, or any clothing, badges or accessories with the words yes or no on them.

Clothing with campaign slogans could be seen as canvassing, and canvassing at a polling station is considered an offence.

It's up to the discretion of the presiding polling station officer to decide if your jumper or badge is 'canvassing' but just to be safe, leave them at home.

Next do not forget your polling card, as having your allotted card with you on the day speeds up your check-in process while also allowing you to vote.

If you don't have a polling card, a passport, a drivers license, a student ID containing a photograph (student travel cards not accepted) or a public services card will suffice. Age Cards are not listed as accepted.

Bring a form of the above ID even if you have a polling card, as there is a chance you will be asked.

Don't take any pictures in the polling station, and DEFINITELY don't take any images inside the booth, of either you or your vote.

As for the vote itself, make sure it gets stamped by polling station staff.

A post shared by #savethe8th (@savethe8th) on

The question will read: 'Do you approve of the proposal to amend the Constitution contained in the undermentioned Bill?'

Put an X in the box for Yes or No and don't doodle on the paper or write any messages. There should be two pen strokes on that paper making up your X and that is is, or you risk spoiling your vote.

And just put and X to indicate your vote, not a tick and don't colour in the box you want.

If you make an honest mistake, you can ask for a new ballot slip as long as you haven't already put it in the ballot box.

Show the back of your ballot paper to the local [polling official, fold it in half, and place it into the sealed ballot box. Job done.

You can take your selfie in your campaign merch when you get home and share words of encouragement to others online about how they need to get out and vote that day.

The day after the vote, the ballot boxes will be opened and counted.

Cillian Murphy has been an active advocate for a 'Yes' vote in the upcoming abortion referendum, lending his voice to various campaigns supporting the repeal of the Eighth Amendment.

And now, the Peaky Blinders star has given one final salute to the Yes side in the form of a delicious chocolate cake.

As a way of thanking campaigners for all their hard work, Cillian sent the good folk over at Together for Yes a well-deserved treat.

A tweet on the Together for Yes Twitter page read: ''Cillian Murphy sent us in cake! Fantastic to have support from men around the country to will stand with us and vote YES on Friday May 25th''.

The cake was accompanied by a hand-written note signed by the man himself.

''Thank you all so much for your hard work on the Yes campaign," it read.

''Together for change, for equality, for love. Together for Yes! Best wishes, Cillian Murphy''.
