Yearly Archives: 2018

Start stocking up on fake tan. It seems the warm and sunny days of summer are officially at an end.

Autumn has arrived and with it comes cool temperatures and light winds.

Ireland will be experiencing highs of 14 degrees in some areas, the coldest it has been in two months, according to Met Éireann.

On the west coast, rain is expected to start on the Atlantic coast before sweeping inland across the rest of the country overnight.

Temperatures will reach lows between 5 and 9 degrees tonight with light breezes.

Today and tomorrow is expected to alternate between sunny spells and scattered showers. So, at least we will not have to suffer through consistent downpour.

For Dublin, however, temperatures will be slightly higher than that of the western and northern regions, reaching a high of 18 or 19 degrees tomorrow.

However, don’t count on outdoor plans this weekend. Although it will be warm and humid, Met Éireann predicts on-and-off-again showers with moderate winds on Saturday.

The North will have a wetter weekend and can expect heavier showers.

Although Sunday will clear the clouds a bit in the afternoon, scattered showers will occupy the eastern counties with a high of 17-22 degrees.

We will miss clear skies and summer sunshine, but hopefully the rainfall with start replenishing the Irish Water shortage.

Who would have thought we needed more rain in Ireland?

Overall, we should prepare for a humid, rainy weekend with slightly cooler temperatures than it has been of late.

As of now, next week is predicted to have the same forecast as this weekend, with dryer intervals in the east and south.

Now listen, I can't imagine anyone would ever need to be convinced to visit Barbados.

Stunning sandy beaches and the glistening ocean? I'm already convinced.

However, we actually didn't realise how much more this little island has to offer visitors.

So, if you are lucky enough to be heading to Rihanna's home country this summer, keep reading, as we've done up a list of some of the amazing things you should see and do.

1. Harrison’s Cave.

Get ready to delve underground, and follow the winding tunnels and caverns of Harrison’s Cave – one of the island’s most breathtaking natural wonders.

Laden to the brim with bulbous stalagmites and stalactites (which we all remember from Junior Cert geography), the subterranean passages here hide echoing chambers like the 50-meter-high Great Hall and curious geological formations, like the so-called Altar, formed from millions of years of mineral deposits.

2. Huntes Gardens.

It's not all sand and sea in this gorgeous nation; Barbados has significant greenery to offer it's visitors.

Hunte's Gardens is a botanical garden and significant tourist attraction in the St Joseph Area of central Barbados. It was created from the 1950s by horticulturist Anthony Hunte in an unusual sink-hole-like gully.

3. Wander around Bridgetown.

The UNESCO-attested capital of Barbados is Bridgetown, and it is magnificent!

The city is packed with pretty little historic sites like the Chamberlain Bridge and the gorgeous neo-Gothic Parliament Buildings, built in the high style of Victorian England.

There are sun-splashed squares where little rum bars are busy with the chat of travellers and off-duty local fishermen alike. Perfection.

4. Oistins Fish Fry.

This lively event is considered to be a rite of passage for first-time visitors hitting the sandy shores of Barbados.

Kicking off  every Friday and Saturday night on the streets between Welches Beach and Miami Beach on the south coast, the party is amazing craic.

There are sizzling BBQs cooking up some of the freshest swordfish, mahi mahi and lobster you have ever tasted, along with live bands spouting a medley of reggaeton and samba, steel drums and Bajan folk.

5. Hug the baobab of Queen’s Park.

The colossal trunk of Barbados’ largest tree can be found (and hugged, at least if there’s a group of you!) on the lawns of pretty little Queen’s Park in the heart of Bridgetown.

Considered by many to be the fattest tree in the entire Caribbean, it takes roughly 15 adults to stretch around the full circumference of the central trunk!

A small sign offers information on the age and heritage of the mighty tree, while the surrounding gardens of the park host a pretty Bandstand and the Queen’s Park art gallery.

6. The beaches

Okay, I know that this is kind of a given, but Barbados is home to some of the most majestic beaches in the world.

You don't just have to sit on the sand with a cocktail (although, that would be my plan), as there are so many amazing experiences you can do while at the beach.

Why not swim with sea turtles? Or go jet skiing? So many things to do.

7. St. Nicholas Abbey.

St Nicholas Abbey is located in Saint Peter, Barbados, a plantation house, museum and rum distillery. Colonel Benjamin Berringer built the house in 1658.

This house is one of only three genuine Jacobean mansions in the Western Hemisphere.

Anyway, if you need me, I'll be living my best Island life.

If you're anything like us, you adore PrettyLittleThing – and it has some fabulous autumn collections in tow. We were so excited to see their debut.

Their End of Summer bash last week was themed pink and the party was definitely embracing it, with eye-catching sparkly disco tops and pink furry dresses dotted throughout the crowd.

And what a crowd it was.

From designers to popstars, the guest list was hot and they mingled together, sipping vodka cocktails and nibbling on bite-size treats.

The Saturdays singer and fashion designer Vanessa White was there looking gorgeous, and eager to share about her insider fashion tips and what she’s looking forward to for A/W 18.

When it comes to what’s next for A/W 18, it was all about relaxed vibes.

“I’m a big fan of athleisure vibes, whether that’s in the day or even in the evening with a pair of heels and a nice bag. So I’m looking forward to seeing what the new key AW18 athleisure and co-ord pieces.”

Rocking a fabulous pink shell suit skirt, she spilled on how to get the perfect Insta snap.

‘’Lighting is always key,’’ she said. ‘’I’m also a big fan of plants. The more the better.’’

Her must-have travel accessory? “I have an old-school leather Miu Miu bum-bag that I tend to take everywhere with me and it’s great because it goes with really casual outfits but also looks great with more glam styles.”

The designer did warn against trying to follow new fashion trends too hard. Instead, she suggests that one should dress to suit her body type and style.

“I just always think it’s best to wear things that suit you, rather than just following a trend. If you naturally wear styles that are really hot in terms of trends, then that’s just a bonus."

Also, present at the event were TOWIE stars Chloe Sims and Vas J. Morgan. Both British celebrities have signed to go on Celebs Go Dating this year.

The two have been ‘best mates’ for a while now and are excited to support each other during their dating experience.

Chloe dished about the type of guy she will be looking for on the show, saying the mystery man must be “as cool as Vas.”

“I’m not being short-ist, but I want someone as tall as Vas. So they’ve got to be tall, have a bit of game, and have a bit of banter,” she revealed.

“They’ve got to be me basically,” Vas laughed. “Just the hetero-version.”

A post shared by Chloe Sims (@chloe_simsstarship) on

When asked if she had any dating advice for other mums or women, Chloe replied, “if I’ve got agents speaking to my husband I definitely can’t advise anyone. Go on Celebs Go Dating! I haven’t got any advice.

“I’m rubbish at dating basically. I’m rubbish with men unless they’re gay. […] I’ve got a daughter and I’m blessed.

“But I haven’t got a boyfriend. We’ll see, maybe by October it might be different.”

Influencers and models enjoyed the event, looking stunning in their PLT pieces. Like Vanessa, we seriously can’t wait for the new autumn line.

If you’re looking for a drop-dead gorgeous summer outfit or the perfect pink crop top and trouser set, PrettyLittleThing’s website is the only place you should be checking out.

It’s been less than 24 hours since I went to see Coppers: The Musical and I am itching to see it again. Have I been on the Olympia’s website for the past 15 minutes umming and ahhing about buying tickets? Possibly…

I have to admit I wasn’t expecting much from the musical, mainly because of my limited love for Coppers and it’s sticky floors, overpriced drink and love for cheesy pop music, but boy was I pleasantly surprised.

My stomach hurt from laughing so much, my cheeks ached from smiling and Maniac 2000 will be forever stuck in my head.

The show follows the love story between Kerry girl Noleen who moves from small town  Cahersiveen to Dublin and GAA player and clamper Gino Wildes.

The musical features comical songs about working for the VHI and gay GAA players-that will be stuck in your head forever, but most importantly, Coppers will leave you feeling oddly proud about Ireland and our unique cliches.

The cast really won me over, especially Noleen’s hopeless fiance Mossy and his side-splitting performance. They're a genuinely talented group of people and certainly deserve a standing ovation each night.

The show is silly and witty, and serious fans of the theatre may call it foolish, but Coppers: The Musical is full of heart.

It’ll brighten your day and leave you yearning to go to the over-crowded club on Harcourt Street with hopes of finding your very own Noleen(t) or Gino.

Kudos to Paul Howard, Karl Harpur and the entire cast of Copper Face Jacks: The Musical.

Do yourself a favour and go see this joy of a musical. It’s too good to miss.

Copper Face Jacks: The Musical runs in the Olympia until Sunday, August 12.

If this study is anything to go by, we seriously need to have a long, hard look at the issue of consent in Ireland.

Shockingly, an NUI Galway study found that the majority of third-level students do not think 28 standard drinks makes a person too intoxicated to give sexual consent.

The researchers gave 753 online participates two different scenarios which involved drink and being able to give consent to do the deed.

So here's how the survey worked:

The online respondents were given the same story of two students of Neil and Carol.

They go home together after a night out on the town to celebrate exam results.

However, those who completed the survey were split into two groups: one was given a "moderate" drinking level and the other was a "heavy" drinking consumption.

For clarity's sake as our opinion will majorly vary on what "moderate" and "heavy" consumption of alcohol is –  we will called in the experts.

Drinkaware.ie states that 28 standard units adds up to around 12 pints of beer at four percent alcohol or 700ml of spirits at 40 percent.

Carol and Neil's story starts off with them bumping into each other at a night club where they're both celebrating exam results from their college course.

"By midnight Neil had had the equivalent of about 5 (10) pints of beer, when he bumped into Carol, also 21, who is in one of his classes at college. She had also been out celebrating with her friends since the early afternoon.

“She had been drinking vodka (the equivalent of 4 pints (8 pints) of beer altogether). They started talking at the bar. Neil bought Carol a drink."

It continues with Neil knowing that Carol lives in the same student accommodation, so offers to share a taxi with Carol at the end of the night.

In the club, things begin to heat-up between the pair.

"Neil started kissing Carol and touching her. She moved his hands lower on her body."

The story finished with: “They took a break and had one more drink (three rounds of drinks) before the nightclub ended. In the taxi on the way home at 3 am Carol closed her eyes and dozed off for a few minutes. When they got to Carol’s apartment, Neil woke Carol up and they went into his flat. He made her tea and put on some music. They were having a good time laughing and joking together.

“He took out a bottle of whiskey and they each had one shot (a few generous shots). Both at this stage were a bit unsteady (and slurring their words), they talked for another while and shared a bottle of Coke (Neil spilled the tea all over the table and Carol nearly fell off her chair getting up to go to the bathroom). Then they went to his couch and started kissing again.

“Soon they had each removed their clothes. Through his actions, Neil made it clear he wanted to have sex with Carol. She asked him to put on a condom first. He did so and they had sex,” it concluded.

The results have somewhat floored us.

Twenty percent of respondents in the moderate drinking group "agreed" or "strongly agreed" that Carol was too drunk to give her consent to sex, while 14 percent thought Neil was too drunk to give his.

In comparison, to the heavy drinking participates, 33 percent thought Carol was too drunk and 30 percent thought Neil was too.

Furthermore, in their evaluation of the results, the report said: “Even when 28 standard drinks were consumed, 67 percent of students did not agree that Carol was too drunk to give consent, and 70 percent of students did not see Neil as unable to give consent.”

The study also highlighted that student's opinions, more often than not, didn't differentiate between "moderate" and "heavy" in alcohol intake, despite the stories varying.

"These findings suggest that it is urgent to achieve enhanced awareness among young adults in college of the impact of drinking on the capacity to give consent," said the report.

Dr Pádraig MacNeela at NUI Galway said in relation to the results:

“The survey findings show that the social environment in which consent takes place among college students is often unsupportive – most women experience harassment, a large majority of all students are dissatisfied with their sexual health education at school, and social norms for drinking minimise the true impact of alcohol on the capacity to give consent.”

The study was conducted as part of a SMART consent research report which is run in NUI Galway

If you want more information surrounding the work they do and consent, please click here.

The report was published on Tuesday by Minister of State for Education and Skills, Mary Mitchell O’Connor.

Sexual consent has been a hot topic in Ireland over the last year and this study has given us a lot to mull over.

It's crucial that you arm yourself with the right information surrounding what is consensual and what isn't.

Remember: Safe, protected and consensual sex is always the sexiest.

Like the upstanding millennials that we are, we adore a good brunch. But more than a good brunch, we adore a cheap brunch.

And what could be cheaper than brunch dishes you can whip up from the comfort of your own kitchen?

Ladies, we give you our three favourites…

Ham and cheese womelette

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 slice of ham, chopped
  • ½ cup of grated cheese
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • Spring onions to taste

Whip the eggs until they create a light foam. Add the cheese, ham, paprika, salt and pepper.

Preheat the waffle maker and spray with oil. Pour the mix into the waffle maker and cook for about 4 minutes.

Scatter with spring onions and more cheese if desired. Enjoy!

Brunch frittata

  • 80g grated cheese
  • 8 free range eggs
  • 200g potatoes, peeled and finely sliced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 4 rashers, chopped
  • 1 handful baby spinach leaves
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp paprika

Put the sliced potatoes in a pot of boiling water and simmer for 10 minutes. Drain them and set aside.

Heat the oil in a large frying pan and add the onion and the chopped bacon. Cook for about 5 minutes. Set aside.

Keep the pan on the heat and place the sliced potatoes in one layer on the bottom of the pan. Scatter the bacon, onion and the spinach. Cook for about 3 minutes, until the spinach starts to soften.

Beat the eggs until they form a light foam, add some pepper, the paprika and the cheese.

Add the egg mixture to the pan, put a lid on it and cook over medium to low heat for 10 minutes, or until the eggs are cooked through.

Serve cut into wedges with a some cherry tomatoes and sliced avocado if desired.

Breakfast baked potatoes

  • 4 medium potatoes, cooked
  • 4 free range eggs
  • ½ onion, finely chopped
  • 100g bacon, chopped sliced
  • 75g grated cheddar
  • A few sprigs of chives
  • Salt and pepper
  • Olive oil
  • Sour cream, to serve

Preheat oven to 180°C. In a large pan, heat a tablespoon of olive oil and cook the onions until translucent. Add the bacon and cook for 3 minutes.

Cut out the top of each potato and scoop out most of the inside (you can keep it to make potato croquettes).

Stuff each potato with the bacon and onion mix, some cheese then crack one egg inside. Season with salt and pepper. Add more cheese on top and place on a lined baking sheet. Cook for about 20 to 25 minutes.

Top with chopped chives and serve with baby spinach and a dollop of sour cream if desired.

On 5 August 2018, a destructive and shallow earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck the island of Lombok, Indonesia.

The epicentre was located inland, near Loloan Village in North Lombok Regency. As its rupture spread to the north and reached the sea, tsunami warnings were generated.

Severe shaking was reported throughout the entire island of Lombok and Gili Islands while strong shaking was reported in the neighbouring islands of Bali and Sumbawa.

The death toll continues to rise and the extent of damage can't even be quantified at this point.

Fiona Smith from Swords, Dublin and her partner Ondrej Gomola from Bratislavia have lived and worked as managers of Blue Marlin Dive on Gili T for six years.

They have built a life for themselves and have afforded many local staff job opportunities of late, and are said to be "devastated" by the destruction caused following the quake.

The couple, who have lost their home, are now concerned about the 199 local staff they employ.

“Our little paradise island that we have called home has taken a hit and the foundation of our island and its businesses, which are the local people, have taken the biggest hit of all,” Fiona told Independent.ie

Following the disaster and news that the couple's home had been destroyed, friends Dionne Taylor and Katie Lyons set up a GoFundMe page.

Money raised will go towards helping Fiona and Ondrej get back on their feet and buy the essentials needed to rebuild their home, and to help others.

"Gili Trawangan needs homes repaired so people like Fiona and Ondrej can live back here," organisers of the fundraiser wrote.

"Without the businesses open and repaired there will be limited tourists therefore the impact on locals and the island itself is unthinkable."

If you are in a position to help, you can do so here.

In this modern world, we are obsessed with constantly being busy. We are constantly on the go and often forget to stop and take a breather.

We update our Instagram stories with snaps of our morning coffee, selfies with our dearest friends and photos from work parties and our delicious Sunday brunch.

We do our best to strive in work, constantly saying yes to new opportunities and taking on extra work to strengthen our careers.

However, as Ferris Bueller once said: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.”

It’s important to remember that taking a break is acceptable. Stopping and letting yourself breathe is a necessity in this life, especially for your mental health.

Model Kendall Jenner recently admitted that she had to step back from her career for the sake of her mental health. She has worked for some of the biggest fashion brands in the world, like Givenchy, Chanel and Marc Jacobs, but despite her stellar career, the 22-year-old knew she had to take a break.

A post shared by Kendall (@kendalljenner) on

Kendall told Love Magazine that she cut her workload during spring/summer 2019 fashion week: “Last season I didn’t do any shows. Just ‘cause I was working in LA and I was like ‘Oof, I can’t right now – I’m gonna go crazy. I was on the verge of a mental breakdown.”

A post shared by Kendall (@kendalljenner) on

Our careers may not be as glamorous as Kendall’s, but the supermodel is right. It is okay to step back from work regardless of your job title, whether you work in Topshop, the local cafe, as a trainee doctor or a budding musician.

At the end of the day, we are all human and you should never run your mental health into the ground for the sake of a few extra hours work, or in Kendall’s case a Chanel fashion show.

''Does Barry Manilow know that you raid his wardrobe?"

Get ready to (probably) hear Cole Sprouse playing his dad FP as a teen utter those infamous words in a S3 ep of Riverdale.

The hit CW show, which has recently began production for the hotly anticipated third season, has revealed a titbit of gossip about what we can expect once it returns to our screens.

Creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa announced at a TV Critics Association panel that the fourth episode of Season 3 will be a flashback episode called "The Midnight Club."

According to Vulture, it will be a "twisted" take on classic '80s teen movie The Breakfast Club.

Riverdale in the '80s? Sounds amazing.

Roberto elaborated: “we're going to learn about a really, really dark secret in Riverdale that the parents have been keeping since they were in high school.''

It has been confirmed that the main cast will take on the roles of their parents in this flashback and we are SERIOUSLY buzzing for it.

So we're looking at KJ Apa as Fred Andrews (Luke Perry), Lili Reinhart as Alice Cooper (Mädchen Amick), Camila Mendes as Hermione Lodge (Marisol Nichols), and Cole Sprouse as FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich).

Who will play young Mary Andrews (Molly Ringwald), Hiram Lodge (Marc Consuelos), and Hal Cooper (Lochlyn Munro) is anyone's guess.

Roberto also said that very attractive array of parents also might get a bit more attention this season.

“We’d love to do a bizarre episode where we follow most of the parents, and the kids are just on the fringes. In season three, we’re in a place where we can do that. I think it’d be a blast.”

The first teaser for Season 3 was released at ComicCon in July and it left us with many, many questions.

Will poor, innocent Archie be heading to the slammer? Will Hiram get away with framing him? Will Kevin finally get a decent storyline? Will more Choni scenes be cut out?

Your Riverdale fix is set to hit the CW on October 11th and arriving Netflix the day after, so we don't have to wait too long to find out.

The villa might be freshly empty and the Islanders are out trying to navigate the public eye, but Love Island bosses are wasting no time looking for their replacements.

Some 25,000 hopefuls (YES, 25,000!) have already filled out the application form and are waiting with baited breathe for a reply.

For this year's edition of arguably the most addictive programme on telly, 80,000 sent in the form in the aim of being selected to find love on the silver screen, according to The Sun.

A staggering 60,000 of them signed-up to take part in the first 12 hours of the applications being open last year, reported the publication.

To be fair, the Love Island bosses really know how to sell it.

"How do you fancy enjoying your very own long hot summer of romance? Love Island will be back for summer 2019 and we're now on the lookout for lively singles from across the country to take part."

They continue with the lucky few setting-up home in a "spectacular luxury villa" and requires the candidates to find love, couple up and win the heart's of the public (no pressure, sure).
