The sun has finally made a welcome return to Ireland and we’ve been bitten by the wanderlust bug. We can’t help but daydream about strolling through the streets of Paris with an ice cream in one hand and a camera in the other.

There are many things we love about going away on holidays, from tanning our pasty pale legs to drinking cocktails in the afternoon because anything goes when you’re in holiday mode.

We are so ready to jet off, even though packing is a complete nightmare, we are ready for the challenge. All we want is to lounge by the pool and soak up that sweet, sweet Vitamin D.

One of our ultimate holiday essentials is a good book. We struggle to fit all of our clothes, shoes and beauty bits into our suitcase, but we’ll always manage to squeeze in a book.

If you’re looking for a decent summer read, we’ve gathered up three of the best books that are worth popping in your carry-on.

1: The Night of the Party by Rachael English

Rachael English is a master at drawing you into the lives of her characters, making them feel like dear friends you’ve known for years. The Night of the Party follows four Irish teenagers whose lives are changed forever during the biggest snowstorm Ireland has seen for decades. Years have passed since the night of the party, but will they keep quiet or will one of them break their silence? A gripping read that you’ll fly through during a day by the pool.

The Night of the Party published by Hachette Books Ireland is available here.

2: Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton

A brutally honest book about the realities of growing up and the complications of adult life. Dolly Alderton, who is a former dating columnist for the Sunday Times, perfectly captures what adulthood is really like, from the heartaches to those drunken nights you’ll never forget. This book is a breath of fresh air that teaches you about self-worth, genuine friendships and bad dates in a witty and wise way.

Everything I Know About Love published by Penguin Books Ltd is available here.

3: Leah On The Offbeat by Becky Albertalli

This joyous young adult tale is a sequel to Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, which was adapted into the major motion picture- Love, Simon. This heartwarming tale follows Leah as she handles the stress of first love, complicated friendships and school life. Leah has told her mum she is bi-sexual, but there are some very important people that she has yet to tell- her friends. Teen Vogue described the book as, “The love child of John Green and Rainbow Rowell,” so we’ll certainly be purchasing a copy in the airport before catching our flight.

Low-income women in Scotland will no longer have to worry about period poverty, thanks to a government-funded trial scheme in Aberdeen that is now being expanded throughout the country.

The pilot programme distributed free sanitary products to more than 1,000 people in Aberdeen.

Now, over £500,000 is being given to the charity FareShare, in the hopes that the products will reach more than 18,000 menstruating people.

During the summer, the charity's centres in Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow and Edinburgh will distribute pads and tampons to those in need.

As well, from August the products will be free for those at school, university, or college, making Scotland the first national government to do so.

Angela Constance, Scotland's equalities secretary, spoke frankly about the necessity of the ground-breaking scheme:

"It is unacceptable that anyone in Scotland should be unable to access sanitary products, and I am pleased that we are able to work with FareShare to make products available more widely through the services delivered by their partners."

Gillian Kynoch, the head of FareShare in Scotland, said on the matter, "We are excited to be working with the Scottish Government to use this network to make sanitary products available to people across Scotland.

"Our partners CFINE, Move On, Transform and Cyrenians will be supporting the distribution, working with low income and vulnerable people to break down taboos and stigma. This is an issue that has gone unheeded for too long."

We're happy to hear this scheme will ensure low-income women in Scotland receive basic necessities like pads and tampons.

Police in the North have confiscated abortion pills from pro-choice campaigners after a number of women ingested the prohibited drug outside a Belfast court.

A number of demonstrators gathered outside Laganside Courthouse on Thursday afternoon to protest against Northern Ireland's strict abortion laws.

The PSNI seized a remote controlled robot that was designed to distribute abortion pills with the support of two providers, Women on Web and Women on Waves.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, Eleanor Crossey Malone, from socialist feminist movement Rosa, was one of those who took the pill in front of television cameras.

She said: "I have taken this in defiance of the extremely outdated, mediaeval, anti-choice laws that exist in Northern Ireland.

"We are not willing in the wake of the repeal referendum to be left behind any longer.

"Northern Ireland after repeal will be one of only two jurisdictions remaining in Europe to criminalise women effectively for having abortions.

"We are not willing to accept it any more."

This is not a drill! This weekend has been an absolute scorcher, and we're already gasping for a bit of ice cream to cool off.

If you're based in Cork, you're in luck, as the brand new Gino's store on Oliver Plunkett Street is dolling our free scoops this Saturday.

All you have to do is be at the store between 11am and 1pm – no strings attached.

The new store from Gino’s Gelato is the second Cork store to open in as many months.

After the success of the Paul Street store, owners Anthony Murphy and Jonathan Kirwan were eager to expand their offering in the People’s Republic.

The new shop will create jobs for 16 staff including 3 master gelato makers who will make the gelato fresh in store each day – that's something we'd like to add to our Linked-In profiles.

A post shared by Gino's Gelato (@ginos_gelato) on

'Cork has been on our radar for some time now but we were waiting for the right locations before expanding.'

'The Cork people are some of the friendliest in the country and seem to be big gelato fans. We are already in the planning stages for opening a 3rd store in the city centre,' co-founder Anthony Murphy said.

Cheers to more free gelato in the future.

It's not uncommon to gain weight when you're in a new relationship – after all, all those dinner dates and Chinese takeaways will eventually take their toll.

However, it seems that even when the honeymoon period has been and gone, people who are romantically involved are still more likely to gain weight than their single counterparts.

Researchers at Central Queensland University in Australia examined over 15,000 adults to find out whether or not a person's relationship status could affect their ability to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Almost three quarters of the participants had romantic partners and there was an even amount of men and women.

Interestingly, results showed that people in relationships tended to follow healthier lifestyles, but still had higher BMIs than the single folk.

Lead researcher Stephanie Schoeppe reckons the reduced pressure to look good and the affect of having children could have something to do with this.

“When couples don’t need to look attractive and slim to attract partner, they may feel more comfortable in eating more, or eating more foods high in fat and sugar,” she told New Scientist.

So, the next time you blame your partner after gaining a few pounds, you'll actually have scientific evidence to back it up.

Rose McGowen has taken to Instagram to respond to the news that Harvey Weinstein has been indicted on charges of rape and sex crimes.

Rose is one of many women who allege that Weinstein raped her in the 90s.

Taking to social media, she wrote:

'The narrative of me—my story—has been sold to you as a work of fiction. The media often cuts you when they can, especially if they've been paid off to–the journalists and reporters who are safe in their cubicles and do not have to drown in your tears or see the bruises.'

'All they see is numbers. Views. Ratings. And all you were told is that I was a horror show. Someone damaged. Someone off-kilter. Someone not right.'

'Luckily, many worldwide saw through this fiction, sadly, far more continue to hound me with this false narrative without realizing that every evil thing they repeat about me means they are doing the work of a rapist.'

'I have always spoken the truth. I know what I have achieved to change the world. I am facing time in jail because I wanted a better, freer society.'

'I have lived a harder life than most could withstand. I know my truth.'

While we all love a good filter, sometimes the Instagram fitness industry can get a little crazy with its photo editing.

Big brands and fitspo influencers alike could occasionally be accused of using the slimming and blending tools to create an unrealistic silhouette.

One Instagram fitness guru and psychologist Stacey Lee has taken it upon herself to showcase the dramatic differences that photoshop can make, to highlight the negative effects the unrealistic, digitally sculpted physiques we see on social media have on our self esteem.

A post shared by Stacey Lee (@psychandsquats) on

'How many times have you looked at a photo of yourself and thought negatively about it? How many times have you compared yourself to the models in the magazine, or more likely, the 'models' on Instagram and social media and thought 'nope I don't look like that'?, she said, captioning one snap of her before and after photoshop image.

'How many times have you been tempted to add a filter, tweak the cellulite, remove the blemish, maximise the booty, in order to portray a more 'socially acceptable' version of yourself to the world?'

'Because you feel you aren't 'enough' as you are. Subconsciously we are primed to find certain body types more acceptable.'

'Because you feel you aren't 'enough' as you are. Subconsciously we are primed to find certain body types more acceptable.'

'This can be very subtle changes to photographs seen on a daily basis. But these small changes resonate deeply within our minds.'

'Shaping our beliefs about the way we 'should' look, and therefore creates unrealistic comparisons and perpetuates negative self talk which becomes low self esteem. Recognising the signs of a photoshopped image is important for our mental health.'

'Understanding that sometimes what we are looking at is simply a fantastical image created on something designed to suit virtual reality, NOT the real world.'

Preach girl, preach.

It's the end of an era after Nick Grimshaw announced his departure from the BBC Radio 1 breakfast show, after hosting it for six years.

The news comes just two weeks after listener figures showed the show had recorded its second lowest audience since records began.

Nick, who took over from Chris Moyles in 2012, said he's decided "it’s time for a change and a new show."

“I’m very grateful that I got to live my dream every day for what will be nearly six years, But six years is a long time and this isn’t a forever job. I had the time of my life.”

However, it's not all bad news. The 33-year-old will be swapping shows with Greg James – the current Radio 1 drive time presenter.

Appearing on the programme, Greg admitted he was nervous about revealing himself as the new presenter.

“I did not sleep one hour last night just thinking about it… it’s too much.”

Ben Cooper, controller of Radio 1, 1Xtra and Asian Network, said: “Greg gets his childhood dream, Grimmy gets a lie-in and the Radio 1 audience gets two exciting new shows with the biggest and most popular youth presenters in the country.

“I’m so proud that Radio 1 produces and nurtures the best talent in the industry – I gave Greg his first show when he joined us from student radio and now he’s getting the most famous radio gig in the world – it’s going to be fantastic. Grimmy’s done a brilliant job reinventing the feel and tone of the breakfast show by connecting with new audiences in new ways in the digital age.”
