Monthly Archives: March 2018

So last week, the vast majority of us were cooped up at home, basically snowed in for the best part of 5 days.

Seems dreamy, right?

The perfect opportunity to relax for a few days, sleep, and enjoy a bit of seclusion.

Well, the novelty very quickly wore off, and I learned a lot about myself in the process.

1. Netflix in our generation's most important creation.

Genuinely lads, what in the name of GOD did they do in 1982 when the big snow storm hit? I an confidently say I watched at least 6 hours of Netflix each day, and I honestly regret nothing.

2. I am a bottomless pit.

So, apparently I can eat and eat and eat, without ever getting full. Seriously though, I literally ate everything in my home for the last week. Maybe it was my survivor instinct? The human form of hibernating for the winter. Anyway, I should have shares in Lindt to be honest.

3. Personal hygiene is not always relevant.

I just was not arsed washing my hair. It just seemed so so unnecessary while the storm ransacked the outdoors. Even when I braved the elements to hit the local pub… I just kept my hat on (something I would NEVER do under normal circumstances).

4. I am a sloth.

Holy Jesus, I can SLEEP. So, I kind of always knew this, I am a massive fan of the bed, but last week really took the biscuit. I can actually count on two hands how many times I actually got out of my bed, and at least half of them were to procure alcohol. Fair.

5. Working from home is not fun.

You would think having a few days away from the office would be sensational (and it is, trust me), however, it gets kind of lonely. You start missing your work wives, and the general human contact involved in a 9-5.

6. Booze heals all!

It's cold outside… drink. The water has been turned off… let's drink. Red weather warning nationwide? Ah sure, we'll head to the pub! I hot the local on more than one occasion last week, and it was the BEST craic. They blasted Christmas music and everyone was just in great form (and happy to be out of the house, tbh.)

7. I have the patience of an actual God.

Honestly, I don't recall the last time I spent so much time with my family. Don't get me wrong, they're excellent humans, but when cabin fever hits, everyone and everything starts to seriously get annoying. I suppose that's why we all just drank the annoyance away.

 8. I love snow, but man, it gets old.

It is magical, and for a time our country was a winter wonderland, but wow, I am happy to see the back of the snow. It was fun while it lasted, but let's get the Spring weather already!

According to the latest “red list” analysis, nearly 40 percent of giraffes have been lost in the last 30 years.

The list was compiled by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, and it is pretty upsetting.

The new red list found the world's giraffe population has plummeted from about 157,000 to 97,500 in the last 30 years, and the species had jumped categories from “least concern” to now “vulnerable”.

“This red list update shows that the scale of the global extinction crisis may be even greater than we thought,” said IUCN’s director general.

If you've ever attempted to take a fire selfie, you'll agree that angles are absolutely everything.

In your mind, you can go from looking like a ethereal goddess to complete swap monster with just a slight twist of your head – and don't even get us stared on reverse image cameras.

However, for anyone who is a little self-conscious about the size of their nose, you'll be happy to know that phone camera can actually make them appear bigger than they are in real life.

In fact, new research has shown that selfies can increase the size of our snozzles by up to one third, and the phenomenon is causing a dramatic rise in demand for nose jobs.

Apparently it's all to do with perceptive. When taken at a distance of 12 inches, selfies can appear to change the structure of our faces, thus leading to increased self-esteem and body image issues.

According to Metro, four in ten cosmetic surgeons say they have noticed that some of their patients wish to improve the way the look on Facebook and Instagram.

Dr Boris Paskhover, an ear, nose and throat specialist said: "When taken at 12 inches away, selfies increased nasal size by 30 per cent  in males and 29 per cent in females"

"Predictably, an image taken at five feet – a standard portrait distance – results in essentially no difference in perceived size."

Of course, this means waving goodbye to cute close-ups, but if you don't want you face to become distorted, you're better off getting someone else to take the photo.

Today, Sunday March 4, marks the first ever International HPV awareness day.

HPV is a family of very common and highly contagious viruses which is transmitted through any kind of sexual contact and is responsible for a number of cancers in both men and women.

Up to 130 men and women die from cancers caused by HPV (human papillomavirus) every year in Ireland, however, there is still a significant lack of knowledge and understanding among adults.

Worrying new research, supported by the Irish Cancer Society and Marie Keating Foundation, shows that almost two-thirds (65 per cent) of Irish adult don't know that HPV can cause cancer.

It also found that more than half (59 per cent) are unaware that there are vaccines available that prevent HPV infections that can cause cancer, while 87 per cent believe it's unlikely that they have or have ever contracted the virus.

HPV is extremely common, so much so that almost all adult wil get it at some point in their lives. Most infections don't come with clinical symptoms, meaning that those who have it can unknowingly transmit the virus to others.

There are more than 100 different types of HPV, and while the majority of infections are harmless, the treat of cancer remains a major concern.

Donal Buggy, Head of Services and Advocacy, Irish Cancer Society, said, “While it’s hugely encouraging to see more young girls receive a cancer-preventing HPV vaccine under the national immunisation programme, this research clearly shows we have much more work to do to ensure everyone has access to correct information about HPV vaccination.

“Awareness of vaccines to prevent cancers in men is particularly low. While 335 women are diagnosed with cancers caused by HPV each year, it is also important to note that 85 men in Ireland annually develop a cancer which could potentially be prevented by a simple vaccination. Irish Cancer Society believes it is time for Ireland to offer equal protection against HPV-caused cancers for boys and girls.”

According to the research, 38 per cent of Irish adults falsely believe that HPV cannot be passed on from one person to another. HPV can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact however it is possible to prevent infection from certain types of HPV that cause cancer if you have been vaccinated against HPV before becoming sexually active.

Liz Yeates, CEO of the Marie Keating Foundation said, “The lack of awareness of HPV and its link to cancer among Irish adults is concerning, however this research provides us with a good opportunity to educate parents and remind the Irish population at large on the public health benefits of protection against cancers caused by HPV.

“Parents in particular need to be reminded of the importance of ensuring that their daughters receive the HPV vaccination under the current National HPV Immunisation Programme. It is very concerning that uptake levels have dropped so considerably and are currently only at 62%. On International HPV Awareness Day it is really important that we all redouble our efforts until we see the levels back up to 87% and higher.

“Globally, 17 countries, including Canada, Australia, Switzerland, United States, Austria and Italy, immunise both boys and girls against HPV. In Ireland, it’s incredibly important for parents to realise that immunisation can help to protect their children from types of HPV that can cause cancers like cervical cancer and anal cancer.”

The research was commissioned by MSD Ireland and carried out by Behaviour and Attitudes on a sample population of 1,000 adults in Ireland.

So, it’s a well-known fact that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and yet many of us still struggle to incorporate it into our daily routines.

Emerging from a warm, cosy bed can be a struggle at the best of times and with a long morning to-do list in front of us, breakfast is normally the first thing to get dropped when we’re running late.

But when exactly should we eat our first meal of the day?

Well, health professional, Dr. Oz, has finally given us the answer.

Speaking to Pop Sugar, the expert recommended eating breakfast within one hour of waking up.

What’s more is you should be eating lunch no later than four and a half hours after, and dinner should be at least three hours before bedtime to avoid a belly full of food and indigestion.

Dr. Oz explained that adopting this routine will make you much less likely to cheat on high-calorie junk food throughout the day.

But if you do want to sneak a little treat, the best time to do so is before 10 am.

Chocolate for breakfast anyone? Science says it's totally okay.

One night stands can be tricky business.

On the one hand, you might have some amazing no-strings-attached sex, and on the other, you might wake up with a sore head and lingering sense of regret.

While there are many factors that come into play, it looks like women are more likely to enjoy a one night stand when they make the first move  – oh, and if the the person they've slept with is good in bed (obviously).

A study of 800 people showed that feeling pressured is one of the main reasons women live to regret casual sex more than men.

Lead author Dr Leif Edward Ottesen Kennair, from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, said women’s attitudes towards no-strings sex may be down to humans’ evolutionary past.

He said: "Women in the past had a lot more to lose from having sex with a non-committed partner, as if they got pregnant the man could walk away at no cost to anything but his reputation while she would be left to bring up the child."

"We know today that women are more worried than men about pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections and their reputation."

The study also found that (surprise, surprise), women regret one night stands because they are far less likely to climax – which, to be honest, makes a lot of sense.
