We've all fallen upon a pack of painkillers in the throes of a vicious hangover and thanked the universe for their existence, but according to recent research it's worth remembering that they don't come without their own risks.

Drawing a link between cardiac arrest and regular use of non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), researchers from Finland, Germany and Canada warned doctors to communicate the risks associated with the medication before prescribing them after conducting analysis of previous studies and establishing that data relating to 450,000 individuals showed that 61,460 of them had suffered a heart attack.

The study, which was published in the British Medical Journal, illustrated the risk pattern, with authors stating that there was "a rapid onset of risk" for heart attack within the first week of use while risk was highest during the first month of taking the painkillers.

Delving further still, researchers established that taking a high dose between 8 and 30 days was 'particularly harmful' while individuals who routinely take celecoxib, ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen and rofecoxib were between 24 and 58 per cent more vulnerable to the onset of a heart attack.

Commenting on their findings, the authors explained: "Compared with non-use of NSAIDs in the preceding year, we documented that current use of all studied NSAIDs, including naproxen, was associated with an increased risk of acute myocardial infarction."

"Given that the onset of risk of acute myocardial infarction occurred in the first week and appeared greatest in the first month of treatment with higher doses, prescribers should consider weighing the risks and benefits of NSAIDs before instituting treatment, particularly for higher dose," they added.

"Whether you are being prescribed painkillers like ibuprofen, or buying them over the counter, people must be made aware of the risk and alternative medication should be considered where appropriate," surmised Dr Mike Knapton, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation.

Eager to assuage the fears of the public, John Smith of the Proprietary Association of Great Britain explained that the research wouldn't apply to those on lower dosages.

"People taking over-the-counter NSAIDs should not be concerned by this research if they are taking the medicine occasionally for short periods and according to the on-pack instructions."

It should be noted that high doses were considered in excess of 1,200mg a day of ibuprofen, 750mg a day of naproxen and 25mg a day of rofecoxib.

Lena Dunham has never made any secret of the medical conditions which have plagued her for most of her life.

While making a name for herself in the entertainment industry and spearheading one of the most successful television shows in recent years, the 30-year-old has lived with anxiety and endometriosis.

And media outlets who wouldn’t be aware of this aspect of Lena’s life are few and far between.

So, when Us Weekly ran a feature on the star and used her recent weight loss as a platform to provide so-called diet tips, Lena, unsurprisingly, wasted no time highlighting the inaccuracy of their coverage.

Taking to Instagram to share an image of the cover, Lena, who was recently hospitalised, provided her followers with a more accurate representation of her ‘weight loss journey’.

20 slimdown diet tips! 1. anxiety disorder * 2. resultant constant nausea 3. an election that reveals the true depths of American misogyny 4. constant sweaty dreams of dystopian future 5. abdominal adhesions pinning ovary below uterus * 6. baseless but still harrowing threats to physical safety online and through smail mail 7. watching institutions you love from Planned Parenthood to PBS be threatened by cartoon mustache-twirling villains 8. finally realizing superheroes aren't real (specifically the X-Factor, really thought they'd handle this) 9. marching your ass off 10. a quiet rage that replaces need for food with need for revenge 11. sleeping 19 hours a day 12. realizing that even the liberal media wants dem clicks no matter whut 13. worrying ceaselessly about the health and safety of women you know and women you don't 14. realizing who ya real friends are 15. having to switch from Uber to Lyft (lots of calories burned trying to understand a new app, then even more trying to understand if the conflict was resolved) 16. bladder spasms, urinary frequency and urgency * 17. having your phone number leaked and violent images texted to your phone by randos under names like VERYFATCHUCKYBOY@creepz.com 18. keeping your back arched against the wind 19. um, who the fuck cares? 20. I have no tips I give no tips I don't want to be on this cover cuz it's diametrically opposed to everything I've fought my whole career for and it's not a compliment to me because it's not an achievement thanx * Star indicates a pre-existing condition

A post shared by Lena Dunham (@lenadunham) on

Including but not limited to anxiety, abdominal adhesions, bladder spasms and intense distress over various elements of her private life, Lena ensured Us Weekly that her weight loss is not something to aspire towards nor is she in any position to offer ‘motivation’ to the female demographic.

“I have no tips. I give no tips,” she wrote.

“I don't want to be on this cover cuz it's diametrically opposed to everything I've fought my whole career for and it's not a compliment to me because it's not an achievement thanx ,” (sic)

Like Cosmopolitan’s astonishing decision to frame a story about cancer with a clickbait headline about weight loss, US Weekly conveniently decided to forget that Lena has a medical background which can impact on her weight and appearance.

Instead of running coverage on Lena’s courage and strength in the face of ill health, US Weekly appeared to think their female demographic would be more inclined to open the magazine if they splashed some weightloss tips on the cover.

Like Cosmo, Us Weekly wrongly assumed they could disguise poor physical and mental health with some handy tips on trimming down and toning up.

And like Cosmo, they were wrong.

Tommy Bowe is headed to our television screens, but this time there won't be a rugby ball in sight.

The rugby star, turned fashion designer has been offered a role on the presenting team of RTÉ One's travel programme Getaways, while he recovers from the ankle injury sustained during this year's Six Nations.

Speaking to the Irish Independent Tommy said, "I’m very excited to be part of the Getaways team this year."

"I was disappointed after my injury in the Six Nations but this gives me an opportunity to explore another avenue while preparing myself for next season. Being a part of a great series like Getaways is a dream come true for me and I’m looking forward to the new challenge."

The Ulster man will join presenters, Joe Lindsay, Mairead Ronan and Vogue Williams, as they travel to exotic locations that are easily accessible to Irish holiday-makers.

New dad, Tommy will travel to Ibiza, with aims of revealing a calmer, more family orientated side to the island.

The series will include a host of gorgeous destinations, including the French Riviera and New York as well as locations closer to home.

Getaways is set to air in early 2018 and we can't wait to see Tommy gets on in his new role.

Another day, another British publication claiming our beloved Irish comedians as their own.

Ed Byrne and Dara Ó Briain have hit the roads of South East Asia for a three-part travel series, Dara and Ed's Road to Mandalay.

The programme, which kicked off on RTÉ One last Thursday, follows the duo as they mix with locals and visit some of the most exciting locations the region has to offer.

The series made its British debut on BBC 2 last Sunday, and sure enough, The Guardian had a thing or two to say about it the next morning.

It read, "The increasingly dull and unedifying formula of sending white British men to far-flung places in search of 'strange and quirky' aspects of other cultures."

"The latest are Irish comedians Dara Ó Briain and Ed Byrne who, in Dara and Ed's Road to Mandalay, travel across Malaysia in the first of a three-part series exploring south-east Asia, 'one of the most rapidly changing places on earth',"

However, the Wicklow native wasn't going to let this one slide.

The word 'British was later deleted from the online review – but of course, Dara had to get the last word.

OK, so we all know Dunnes has been a firm favourite with Irish families for decades now.

But its reputation among fashionistas went stratospheric last year when Amy Huberman stepped out in a plunge-necked white jumpsuit at a pre-Oscars party.

After the S16 offering from Lennon Courtney, which was stocked exclusively at Dunnes Stores, made international headlines, style-savvy women flocked to the homegrown Irish store for a touch of red carpet glamour, and the retailer hasn’t stopped knocking it out of the park ever since.

Preparing to embrace summer ’17, Savida have created a range of stunning looks which prove, yet again, you don’t have to be on an A-list salary to own beautifully-cut pieces which subtly tap into seasonal trends while retaining their own unique edge.

And here are just three reasons, aside from the affordability factor, we are all over the latest range.

1. Colour

We’re talking neon brights and classic Breton-inspired colour, ladies.

2. Detail

Oh, so feminine! Think tulle and feathers, ladies.

3. Versatility

Their nod to features like dramatic sleeves adds a day-to-night touch to this label’s signature romantic flair.

Take a look at just some of what Savida has to offer this summer…

Love takeaways, but cheat day is oh-so far away?

You could be in luck, as Ireland's next big health trend combines the convenience of takeout with the health benefits of nutritious ingredients.

'Fakeaways’ are set to be the next big food trend according to more than one out of every two food fans in this country.

A post shared by Taste of Dublin (@tasteofdublin17) on

A total of 54 per cent of participants in a new Taste of Dublin survey think that fakeaways are about to be huge, and we couldn't agree more.

After all, how could combining hearty, wholesome food with the quick and easy method utilised by takeaway restaurants be a bad thing?

'This makes a lot of sense considering how health conscious Irish people are becoming and how careful more of us are about what we are eating,' said Taste of Dublin Managing Director Avril Bannerton.

'We still want to try new things, but we want to try food that won’t just be healthy for our bodies but will also taste good,' she said, citing Taste of Dublin as the ideal location to try a menagerie of new food experiences.

Ireland is clearly becoming more in tune with their nutrition, with the survey also revealing that nine out of ten Irish people consider themselves to be a foodie.

'It should come as no surprise that so many Irish people consider themselves to be ‘foodies’ considering the strong interest we have in cuisine in this country and the many great restaurants, chefs and food resources which are available to Irish audiences,' said Avril.

'Food is a big topic and being knowledgeable about food has become a badge of honour to many Irish people.'

We are SO ready to indulge in delicious fakeaways while knowing that they're actually good for our bodies.

Have you ever visited the Instagram mobile website for a quick snoop when your data is being oh-so slow when it comes to opening apps?

You may have felt restricted by the limited services available via the website, but that is now a thing of the past.

The new and improved mobile site allows users to save their phone storage by uploading directly from the web

So no storage space, no problem.

Unfortunately there’s still no posting from the desktop site, but this new development is a step in the right direction.

The only problem is that you cannot add a filter to the images added from mobile web, so if your Instagram has a theme, this might not be the most helpful of new developments.

However, Instagram has just surpassed the 700 million monthly user mark, so they must be doing something right.

Geordie Shore girl Holly Hagan is known for her friendly demeanour and usually upbeat attitude.

However, the Geordie star has opened up about her struggles with anxiety in a powerful throwback Instagram post.

Urging her followers to 'stop the stigma,' the reality TV star shared a personal post to mark Mental Health Awareness Week.

Sharing a fun snap of herself and best friend Charlotte, Holly wrote an extensive and thought-provoking caption:

'This day and these photos will forever stick out for me. Look how happy I am and how much fun we're having!' she began.'

'Five minutes before this was taken I was in Charlottes arms unable to breath having one of the biggest panic attacks of my life.'

'If you know that tingling light headed buzzing ringing in the ear feeling your body is starting to go numb and when you know it's coming and you're fighting to stop it and all of a sudden it feels like your chest is so tight your heart is going to explode and you go to breath in and it feels like someone's put a plug in your airway.'

'Tears streaming out of my face completely terrified and embarrassed. But of course once that was over I had to work, put on that brave confident face and pretend it never happened.'

'I had so many attacks that day I was exhausted. I'd say this was the height of my anxiety but to look at me would you ever have even known?'

'I'm the girl who will panic about being late so much that I'm an hour early. I'm the girl who will spend 3 hours on a train worrying about asking the person next to me to move if I need to get off.'

'BUT I'm also the girl who is now in Thailand ALONE! I'm meeting people and actually initiating conversations with others rather than standing at the back scared to make eye contact!'

'Im the girl who is always gunna have anxiety but I'm also the girl who's telling you it doesn't have to control your life!' she continued, highlighting how things can and will get better for those suffering, even if they feel there is no hope.

'For the first time in my life I'm truly happy and I'm so grateful every single day that I'm managing to get past this I can't even remember the last time I had a panic attack there's always someone listening whatever you're going through you are NOT ALONE.'

We commend Holly for sharing her story with her fans, and attempting to use her platform to raise awareness for mental health issues.

Earlier this week, Katelyn Marie Todd shared a post on Facebook in which she spoke candidly about her experience with depression, in an effort to break down the stigma and shed a light on the reality of the mental illness.

The vulnerable post included a picture of Katelyn as she brushed her hair –  a simple act most of us wouldn't think twice about, but for someone who suffers with depression, even the most mundane daily tasks can become huge barriers.

She wrote, ‘’I brushed my hair today. For the first time in 4 weeks.’’

‘’It was matted and twisted together. It snapped and tore with every stroke. I cried while I washed and conditioned it, because I forgot how it felt to run my fingers through it.’’

‘’When I got out of the shower, I couldn't stop sniffing my hair and arms. I've avoided hugging people for a while, because I never smell good.’’

‘’I always smell like I've been on bed rest for a week. I have no clean clothes, because I'm too tired and sad to wash them.’’

Recently, TV series like 13 Reasons Why have been criticised by some for ‘romanticising’ mental illness. Katelyn’s post makes the point that depression isn’t always what it’s portrayed to be by the media.

It’s messy, it’s lonely and above all else it’s ‘‘an emptiness you can physically feel.’’

‘’Depression isn't beautiful. Depression is bad hygiene, dirty dishes, and a sore body from sleeping too much. Depression is having 3 friends that are only still around because they have the patience and love of a saint.’’

‘’Depression is crying until there's no more tears, just dry heaving and sobbing until you're gasping for your next breath. Depression is staring at the ceiling until your eyes burn because you forget to blink.’’

Katelyn finished the raw and honest post by asking others to be easy on family and friends that might be going through a tough time. Be patient, and always take someone seriously if they confide in you.

‘’We're trying. I swear we're trying. See? I brushed my hair today.’’
