Yearly Archives: 2016

It's something we wait for every single year, and now the John Lewis Christmas ad is finally here.

It's definitely another tear-jerker, as Buster the dog steals the show.

Four-year-old Biff, was picked for the famous advert, and he's just the CUTEST thing ever.

But he's not the only animal, as two foxes, a badger, a squirrel and a hedgehog are all working alongside the pet pooch.

Have a look and try to NOT get emotional.

It's safe to say it was a major shock yesterday when Donald Trump was named president elect, and understandably, many Americans had to revise their expectations of what's going to happen over the next four years.

And South Park writers were no different. In an episode which aired over night, the show created an entire skit for Hillary Clinton, after initially believing she would be the winner… which they swiftly had to change when she conceded to Trump.

'We've learned that women can be anything...except for president': In the wake of the result, the episode has been re-titled Oh, Jeez

In the clip, long-time fave Randy is sitting at the dinner table with his wife and daughter, Shelly, who is absolutely fuming.

"Well, I don't know about you guys, but I sure am excited…" Randy says with a shocked face.

'This country's gonna suck for four years!': The original episode was meant to be called The Very First Gentlemen, and would have seen Bill Clinton commemorate his wife's victory by giving a speech at South Park Elementary

He then slightly changes Trump's slogan with, "America's going to be great again. Aren't you excited gang?"

Shelly then screams, "No, I'm not excited! It sucks, Dad! This country is going to suck for four years!"

You can watch the clip on Comedy Central.

Both men agreed to working together for the mutual benefit of our country and the United States.

The president elect said that "the spirit of the strong ties" between Ireland and the US will still stand as he takes over, and the annual tradition of the Taoiseach visiting the White House for St Patrick's Day will continue.

Over in America, there have been protests over night all around the country, with people chanting, "You're not our president."

I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here keeps its viewers coming back year after year.

And while looking at stars eating an animal's ear or testicle is seen as entertainment, something producers always look for is a little jungle love.

However, that's not looking likely this year.

According to The Daily Star, producers of the show realised they had a "sex crisis" just days before the series, because… well, only two celebs are single.

"A fumble in the jungle is looking near impossible. Romance is one of the highlights for viewers and this year could be the odd one out," a source told the publication.

The only single people in the Bush is Carol Vorderman, 55, and Joel Dommett, 30.

However, in previous interviews Carol has admitted that she's "not opposed to going out with someone 10 years younger… it's acceptable."

So you never know, if she doesn't mind widening that age gap, something might just happen. But we can go a year without a romance story, right?

We’ve been online long enough to know that kale is exceptionally good for you.

But just because its famed curly leaves are filled with iron, bursting with antioxidants and seem ideal for detoxifying the body, doesn’t mean we can be forced to consume them on the world’s most official day of indulgence.

A new kale-Brussels sprout hybrid looks set to invade dinner tables around the world this Christmas by offering itself up as a more palatable alternative to the traditional miniature festive cabbage.

According to the Kalettes website, this peculiar combination is versatile to cook, “sweet and nutty” to taste and looks “great”.

Last year, Kalettes were declared “the hippest vegetable of 2015” as they made their way across the UK, continental Europe, Australia and the US.

While we have yet to find stockists of this unusual veggie in Ireland, if the Kalettes' popularity continues to grow, they're bound to appear on dinner tables here soon.

As the world struggles to cope with Donald Trump’s election to president, Paris Hilton has stepped up to discuss the most pressing issue of the day.

While not exactly a prominent political figure, the 35-year-old heiress has taken to Twitter to muse over what she would do should she ever take up residence in the US presidential home.

In addition to hashtagging “MakeAmericaHotAgain” – oh, she went there – the former reality star shared an image of herself superimposed in front of a Barbie pink White House.

To ensure her intentions were made totally clear, Paris included the caption: “I’d paint the White House pink #PresidentParis.”  Shudder.

If you think Trump is bad, try Paris.

Anti-Trump Americans made many satirical tweets during the recently called election claiming that if Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election, they would move to Canada.

Well, call their own bluff they did: disgruntled Americans unfurled their maple-leaf flags and crashed Canada's emigration website as Trump was elected 45th president of the United States.

Officials confirmed that the crash was due to a massive spike in web traffic, some of which spilled out onto Twitter as the events unfolded.

1.

It all started with the site becoming increasingly slow as users fought to look up forms and requirements for emigration.

2.

The site officially crashed in the early hours of the morning as Trump was within striking distance of winning, his promise to built a wall between the US and Mexico clearly still fresh in people's minds.

3.

Initial frustrations were to be expected, as the inconvenience of it all got to a few potential emigrants.

4.

We're not sure if this merits emigration, but to each their own.

5.

Some Canadians couldn't help but comment on the matter themselves.

6.

And even Canada itself got in on the trend,

7.

And others are still hung up on Barack Obama

With nineties fashion staples populating stores across the country, it’s no surprise that mesh crop tops are dominating the blogosphere.

But rather than add another item of clothing to your already bulging shopping cart, why not try make your own?

A four-year-old YouTube video by ItsMyRayeRaye demonstrates how easily a mesh crop top can be crafted from a pair of ordinary tights.

The brief clip encourages viewers to “look cute” and “save money” by snipping the feet off their old tights, before cutting a v-shape in the crotch.

Ladies, it's that simple.

Remember last year’s VMAs, when we all had a LOL over the very thought of Kanye running for US President in 2020? Well, bets are already being taken – and plenty of people are hedging theirs on a certain rapper being one of the candidates!

Yep, the very fact that Donald Trump now bears the title of ‘Leader of the Free World’ has driven the internet to believe that truly ANYTHING can happen – including a President West.

Twitter has been awash with enthusiastic tweets in Kanye’s favour, with many believing his outspoken and unapologetic attitude is exactly what the US needs in a leader.

“Kanye West for President in 2020! He would make a good president, because he speaks his mind and takes action,” wrote one fan.

Others, meanwhile, seem to just be conceding to the idea that the world is a crazy place and reason has gone completely out the window.

“If Trump was able to become president, then for sure Kanye will win in 2020,” tweeted one jaded social media user.

As of now, Kanye has remained tight-lipped, with his romantic birthday tribute to Kim Kardashian still the last tweet up on his account.

No matter what may come, one thing’s for certain: Kim would be the MOST controversial FLOTUS, EVER!

A little after 11.30am local time from the New Yorker Hotel’s Grand Ballroom, a clearly deflated but nevertheless resolute Hillary Clinton delivered her concession speech.

And it was tinged with heartfelt words of passion which moved many around her to tears.

In the aftermath of a defeat that shocked the world, her address marked the first time that the 69-year-old politician publicly reached out to her supporters.

Walking out onto the stage in the last hour, Ms Clinton was surrounded by continued applause and warm shouts of support.

As she called her Democratic nomination, “one of the greatest honours of my life,” her voice faltered with emotion.

“I am sorry that we did not win this election for the values we hold and the vision we share for this country,” she stated.

And though she admitted that “our nation is more deeply divided than we thought,” she reiterated that “the American dream is big enough for all of us”.

She furthermore highlighted America’s “cherished” peaceful transferral of power, and said that President-elect Trump should be afforded “an open mind and a chance to lead”.

Indeed, drawing on the reality TV star’s own wording during his victory speech, early in her address she had stated that she hoped Donald would indeed “be a successful president for all Americans”.

“We poured our hearts into this campaign,” Clinton uttered, adding that she had spent her "entire adult life fighting for what I believe in".

Turning her attentions to the younger people of America – a group which had overwhelmingly leant its support to her campaign – she said: "I’ve had successes and I’ve had set backs – many really painful ones.

"You will have successes and set backs too but never stop believing that fighting for what is right is worth it."

Before her arrival on stage, a tearful-looking former vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine, 58, emerged alongside his wife, Anne.

Talking to the crowd, he spoke of how Hillary “has been and is a history maker in everything she has done.”

“I’m proud of Hillary because she loves this country,” Kaine stated, highlighting that she had been “in battles before”.

“She’ll be in battles again,” he said, later adding: “Til her very last breath she’s going to be battling for the values that she believes in.”

Ms Clinton had planned to speak to the crowd at the Jacob Javits Center during the night.

However, when it became clear that her loss was all but inevitable only her animated campaign manager, John Podesta, appeared telling the shocked and dismayed gathering that there would be no comment until the morning.

Still, he managed to be positive. "We will be back, and we will have more to say," he announced. "Let's get those votes counted, and let's bring this home."

President-elect Donald Trump, who himself seemed surprised at the convincing nature of his win (a win which defied almost every poll published in advance of voting) had addressed his own supporters at around 3am at the city's Hilton hotel.

An hour later he called on his presidential rival to concede defeat – although he did say that America owed her "a major debt of gratitude for her debt to our country".

Clinton had secured 228 electoral votes compared to Trumps’ victorious 279. She did nab important swing states such as Virginia, Nevada, and Colorado, but the former Apprentice boss locked down Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida to storm to victory.
