The Internet has thrown up some peculiar beauty trends in the last few years, but using lube as a primer has to be one of the strangest.

In a new video by YouTuber Hunda Beauty, Hunda Kattan documents the effectiveness of a lubricant, Vagisil, Milk of Magnesia, aftershave balm and olive oil as priming products for makeup.

During the four minute video, the Dubai-based beauty blogger explains that lube is somewhat similar to silicon-based primers, while the feminine anti-itch cream, Vagisil, contains an oil controlling ingredient.

After applying makeup over the products, Hunda found that lube does not make a decent primer (awh!), but Vagisil hydrated her skin, controlled oil and worked well beneath cosmetics.

Primers do for your skin what lingerie does for your body – they flatter, conceal, smooth out and hold things in place. Everything you put on top of them looks immediately better.

So, whether you want to hide your pores, smooth out fine-lines or mattify your skin, these primers will create the perfect base for whatever else you wish to wear:

Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer

This primer has a very large and loyal fan base as it's great for giving skin a soft photo-finish and silky texture.

Benefit The Porefessional

Porefessional is devoted to minimising your pores and uses an oil-free formula for longer-lasting results.

Clinique Superprimer Colour Corrects

Clinique has a range of trouble-shooting primers that target different skin types. This colour-correcting formula one has a subtle bronze tint that will brighten up even the dullest face.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion

Now, we know this is only for your eye area but it's a brilliant formula that will help keep you eye make-up in place all day.

MAC Prep + Prime Natural Radiance

This beauty creates an even skin tone and the ideal base for make-up. It noticeably reduces any oiliness on your skin and you can choose the base colour to suit your skin tone.

Right now, protecting your skin from signs of ageing might not seem like a pressing issue, but believe us, it's important to start as soon as possible.

When it comes to fine lines and wrinkles, prevention is far easier than cure, and all it takes is one or two simple changes to your skincare regime.

Here are a few things you can do now for ageless skin in the future…

1. Stay hydrated
Drinking enough water (or more than enough, when you can) not only brightens the skin but also plumps it up to make pores and fine lines appear smaller. Win. Aim to spread your water intake out over the day instead of downing three glasses at once.

Our bodies can only absorb a certain amount of water each hour, so any more than that and you'll be rushing to the toilet every ten minutes.

2. Invest in skincare
Looking after your skin now will definitely pay off down the link, so rather than splashing out on a new eyeliner or mascara next time you hit the beauty counter, why not stock up on some key skincare products instead?

One brand new release that we cannot wait to add to our daily beauty routine is M.A.C's Mineralize Timecheck Lotion. As well as working as an anti-ageing serum to reduce the appearance of fine lines, shrink pores and hydrate the skin, the lotion also acts as a primer and so is perfect for applying as a base coat for your make-up.

One thing that puts us off serums and primers is their sticky consistency, but M.A.C Mineralize Timecheck's gel-lotion formula feels instantly refreshing and sinks in without a trace.

3. ALWAYS remove your make-up
Okay, you can't help those rare Saturday nights when you fall into bed still in your heels and false eyelashes, but you should be aiming to remove your make-up every night.

Sleeping with foundation and mascara on not only blocks your pores but also dries out the skin and increases the risk of irritation. Not a good plan for the future. Keep make-up remover or wipes plus moisturiser by your bed, so even when you're exhausted you're giving yourself a fighting chance.

Bikinis, sunglasses, suncream – just a few necessities on every woman’s summer holiday checklist.

But one thing that many of us don’t think about buying is a foundation that will suit our newly bronzed skin (hey – a girl can always dream).

If you are thinking about trying a new foundation this summer, Fuschia Make Up has just launched its new range and it’s certainly worth a look.

Perfect Skin (€28) is an anti-ageing foundation but this is great for younger people too because it uses a plumping ingredient which will give your face an extra lift – perfect for those Monday mornings after a busy weekend of social engagements and party dates.

The Perfect Skin range also comes with the Velvet Veil primer (€15) which is useful for hiding any open pores that become so annoyingly obvious after a few hours of wearing foundation.

Fuschia has also found the answer to lasting foundation in the heat with its Setting Spray (€20) which can be used at the end of every make up application.

Fuschia Make Up is an Irish brand and you can buy it in salons and pharmacies around the country.

We admit it – we love nothing more than to run out and buy the latest beauty ‘must-have’, but the reality is that we could live without most of these things. Here are the top five beauty products you don’t REALLY need:

Primer
Does applying primer REALLY make a difference to how your make-up looks, or how long it stays on? Some make-up artists even say it can clog your pores! Are you really going to fork out your hard earned cash for that? It’s a pity too because we love the silky feeling it gives our skin!

Toner
Some people may disagree, but you can definitely live without toner. It’s meant to get rid of any residual product after cleansing, but most cleansers come off pretty easily these days. It’s also supposed to close up your pores – nothing a splash of cold water can’t sort out!

Foot cream
Any cream that claims to be for one specific part of your body is lying. A general body lotion is the best way to go – and less clutter in the bathroom!

Shaving cream
All shaving cream does is soften the hairs and make it easier to glide the razor over the skin, something that a blob of hair conditioner can do just as well! A lot of shower gels these days have moisturising qualities too so they would also work. Though we do like the way it foams up!

SPF 100
While it’s important to protect your skin from the sun, forking out for an extra high SPF factor isn’t really necessary. SPF 30 protects you from 97% of UV rays, while SPF 100 is only 2% better at 99% protection. Just make sure to use whatever factor you choose properly by applying it evenly and regularly.

If you want to look shine-free this summer, it’s important you regulate your beauty routine. Although blotting paper and mattifying primers help, there is a lot more you can do to prevent a midday shiny face.

Keep these pointers in mind the next time you want to buy new products:

Use an oil regulating cleanser
A cleanser with ingredients like salicylic acid or purifying clay help clear pores and control oiliness.

Use a toner
Since harsh ingredients get rid of natural oils and cause your skin to produce extra oil, use a natural toner with tea tree oil or calendula extracts.

Clay mask
Use a clay-based mask once a week to shrink pores and regulate oil control.

Exfoliate
Not only does it get rid of the dead skin cells sitting on the surface of the skin, but it also makes the oil-controlling products you apply afterwards more effective.

Primer
Look for a translucent primer that is suited for your skin type to use under makeup or on its own.
