Yearly Archives: 2018

People tend to share the best parts of their lives on Instagram. We will always post a selfie when our skin is clear and our hair perfectly curled, but we never post about the bad moments, when we just aren’t feeling good about ourselves.

Demi Lovato has bravely opened up about her flaws in a touching Instagram post. The singer shared a photo where she is smiling from ear to ear on the beach.

The Skyscraper singer is wearing a striped bikini in the photo, but despite her smile, Demi admitted that she felt self-conscious about her look.

She wrote, “I’m insecure about my legs in this picture but I’m posting it because I look so happy and this year I’ve decided I’m letting go of my perfectionism.”

Demi has decided to embrace freedom and self-criticism in 2018, which is one of the greatest new year resolutions we’ve ever heard.

She continued, “Learning to love my body the way it is is challenging but life-changing.”

The former Disney star has honestly spoken about her eating disorder in the past. Demi explained that battling the disorder has been one of the toughest parts of her life.

This man is so incredibly talented

She admitted, "I work every day towards solid recovery even if I mess up sometimes. Today I’m feeling strong. You all can do it too. It IS possible.”

We love how positive Demi is. Women everywhere will benefit from the singer’s empowering message, especially in an age where we feel an immense pressure to look perfect.

You go, Demi!

It looks like Danny O'Donoghue has taken the whole 'new year, new me' thing a little too literally.

Clearly fed up with the tall, dark and handsome look, the Dubliner has opted to switch things up with a bleach blonde makeover just in time for The Scripts’ Freedom Child Tour starting on February 2.

The singer took Twitter earlier today to share a snap of his brand new golden locks – but not everyone was loving the new do.

“Do blondes have more fun? I guess I’m gonna find out,” he wrote.

Followers were quick to comment on Danny's choice of hairstyle with some even asking if the star was going through a mid-life crisis.

However, some fans embraced the change with one even comparing the singer to 90's cartoon icon, Johnny Bravo.

In fairness, the man could have any hairstyle and still be bloody gorgeous.

The Script head over to the UK at the beginning of February before they come back to Dublin for three gigs in the 3Arena starting from February 8.

The mother-to-be spilled the beans on The Ellen Show, saying how she and partner, Tristan Thompson, planned to keep up the Kardashian tradition by choosing either a 'K' or 'T' name.

During the interview, Khloé shared a couple of potential baby names with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.

“I think if it’s a boy I’ll go with Junior, Tristan Jr,” she revealed.

However, the reality star admitted that she has had trouble with girls names, “For a girl, I don’t know where to begin.”

Khloe will be the first Kardashian sister to stick with the family's naming tradition, with both Kourtney and Kim choosing to break the trend.

The businesswoman celebrated her sixth month of pregnancy this week, so she still has plenty of time to think about baby names.

To mark her six month, Khloé took to Instagram to share a stunning photo where she is cradling her bump. We think Khloé looks absolutely incredible, but she revealed that she has felt self-conscious during her pregnancy.

“Hopefully, I look pregnant, not just fat,” admitted Khloé, who added that she will avoid wearing maternity clothes for as long as possible.

Khloé is due to give birth to her first child this spring.

George Hook will return to Newstalk's schedule this Saturday following a four month suspension.

The broadcaster was temporarily removed from the station's line-up after controversial comments he made about the rape case of a 19-year-old woman in the UK caused huge public backlash.

During a live discussion, the presenter suggested that women who drink to excess leave themselves vulnerable to sexual assault, and should ultimately shoulder some responsibility if they come to harm.

The highly insensitive remarks sparked outrage among listeners and women's groups, including the National Women's Council of Ireland.

At the time, Newstalk issued a statement confirming that George would step down from his role as lunchtime presenter, though they did confirm that we would return at a later stage with a new weekend slot.

The new show, called Hook's Saturday Sit-in, will broadcast every Saturday morning from 8am-10am and will feature interviews and reviews on a wide range of topics, as well as regular items on travel, music and US politics.

The news comes as the station announces it's new weekend line-up which will see a number of new presenters take to the airwaves.

Speaking about the weekend schedule, Chris Doyle from Newstalk said, “We are delighted to announce this exciting new line-up and, in particular, to welcome these new presenters to our weekend schedule, each of whom has proved extremely popular with our audiences, contributing across a range of shows over the past few years."

While Kim Kardashian might be used to having her every move scrutinised by the media, there are some things that even she can't stand to hear rumours about.

Following the news that her 2-year-old son Saint was admitted to hospital with pneumonia last week, the reality star took to Twitter with a very clear message to anyone attempting to criticise her parenting skills.

Some fans claimed that Kim and husband, Kanye West, had been “out partying” while their son recovered in hospital because she documented her New Year's Eve celebrations on Snapchat.

The 37-year-old mother-of-two was unaware of the comments until one fan took to Twitter to call out people that “love to hate Kim.”

It read: “Why do people continuously think KimYe were “partying” New years Eve while saint was at the hospital? Kim & Kanye love their kids so much, so to even THINK they weren't around when Saint was sick is really stupid af. Yal love to hate Kim, just to hate her, its dumb at this point!”

Clearly taken aback by the comment, Kim wasted no time in formulating her response.

“I haven't heard this BUT lets get this straight. I did not leave my son for one minute during his hospital stay. We were there Wednesday night to Saturday. NYE WAS SUNDAY NIGHT. People came over when he was already asleep for the night!”

“Don't even try me when it comes to my kids,” she added.

The rumours come at a time when the Kardashian spotlight shines brighter than ever.

With Kim expected her third child vis surrogate, Khloe sharing the news that she is pregnant for the first time, and a yet-to-be-confirmed Kylie baby on the way, it's safe to say that this isn't the last time the Kardashian sisters will be the subjects of such rumours.

Hands up if there's a drawer in your house filled with old Samsungs and Nokias that only ever see the light of day when you have a festival to go to or an iPhone emergency to fix?

Yeah, us too.

And while keeping your old phone on hand might seem like a clever back-up plan, a new warning from the Dublin Fire Brigade might just change your mind.

The tweet reads: “Got a new phone for #Christmas ? Maybe recycle or pass on your old phone? This phone was recharged after being left idle & you can see the battery has begun to swell. If a phone hasn't been used in a while, it might be better to dispose of it safely.”

The emergency service has advised anyone who received a new phone for Christmas to ensure they dispose of the old one correctly as failure to do so could result in the battery bursting and exploding.

The terrifying warning was accompanied by a series of images showing a phone battery that had swelled to almost twice it's original size, posing a major threat to anyone who may be handling it.

January is always the move where you can move for ads flogging fitness teas or gym discounts.

However, some of us may not be interested in making resolutions that only involve diet and exercise.

Here are five other avenues of health to consider when deciding what rules you want to set for 2018:

Embark on a proper skin care regimen

Whether it's spots, dry patches or the first few wrinkles coming in, your skin changes on the regular.

Make 2018 the year that you finally invest in skincare and crate a legit, multi step night time routine, instead of scrubbing your face with a makeup wipe and slapping on some Sudacreme.

Some routines can include up to ten steps, but we're good with just six: First cleanse, second cleanse with hot cloth, gentle exfoliation, toner, serum, moisturiser and, if necessary, spot or acne treatment like Sudacreme or a drying potion.

Focus on your sleep schedule

Not getting enough good quality, regular sleep can be a nightmare for our bodies.

As well as wandering around in a haze the day after a late night, it's bad for both your physical and mental health to wander through life on less than six hours per night.

Seven to nine hours is idea, so turn your phone to night mode, rub on some of Lush's Sleepy body lotion and snuggle that hot water bottle for the required amount of hours.

Take a social media sabbatical

If you find you're spending way too long on Snapchat, getting FOMO from Instagram and creeping on randoms on Facebook, it might be time to take a break from your smart phone.

Going offline for one day a week, or just a few hours per day can help self esteem and stress issues hugely, as you are no longer bombarded with the highlight reel of everyone you follows lives.

Make a deal with yourself that you will only go on social media on your commutes to and from work, or for half an hour after dinner, and prepare to be amazed with how much more grounded you are to the actual world.

Brush up on book reading

Reading books keeps your brain sharp, and works of fiction can boost your own feelings of creativity.

Make a list of ten books you'd love to read but have never gotten around to, and get through them over the next 12 months.

Keep one in your bag to read on the commute or on the sitting room table. That way, when it comes to choosing between watching TV or reading, both are within easy reach.

Declutter your mind

Make a list of the important things you have been putting off that have been stressing you out, and set a goal to get through one or two of them a week.

Whether it's that dentist appointment you've reschedule four times, a trip home to see your Granny or arranging a course of counselling sessions for yourself, putting pen to paper and physically seeing the things you want or need to do can motivate you do check them off the list.

Getting an actual physical planner can also help with organisation issues, so make sure you always have it plus a pen handy in your bag to keep your appointments in order and check things off that list.

The high street is about to get a little more interesting thanks to fashion giant H&M.

The fast-fashion company is launching a new brand, /Nyden, in the coming months.

The brand will eschew typical trends and will instead focus on the curation of 'style tribes.'

These tribes will be defined by style influencers, who will collab with the brand to create distinctive clothing collections.

The slash poised ahead of the brand's name represents the collaborative intentions of the line, it's creator Oscar Olsson told The Cut.

The brand is solely committed to millennials, who they belive will appreciate the affordable luxury promised by the new concept.

The name is derived from a hybrid of the Swedish word for new, which is hy, and it which is den.

The brand is expected to launch early this year, and so far there has been confirmation of two 'tribe leaders.'

The first is tattoo artist Doctor Woo, with 1.3 million Instagram followers, who will be working on the men's line.

The 90s were hallmarked by some pretty epic toys.

From alien pods to Tamogotchis to Beanie Babies, imaginative toys were in high demand.

Top of the toy charts was the iconic Polly Pocket, which enraptured the minds of children while simultaneously being a bit of a choking hazard (times were different back then).

While you may have paid a few bob for them back in the day, the toys are now racking up the big bucks on online resale sites.

Some unopened, sealed toys are going for almost €2,000, and there are reports of Polly Pockets with an asking price of up to the hundred thousands.

The items that fetch the highest price are those made by the original toy creator Bluebird Toys.

The dolls were manufactured by Bluebird in the 80s before being bought by toy giant Mattel in the 90s.

Dolls and accessories are particularly popular online, but the Polly Pocket Jewel Cases from the very 90s seem to be fetching the highest prices.

According to Digital Spy, one Polly Pocket case was asking for as much as €100,000.

However, if you want to make bank with your old toys, they must be in their original packaging and sealed.

Excuse us, we have a trip to the homestead and an attic search to embark upon.
