Yearly Archives: 2018

Taste of Dublin is back next week and we are getting really excited about trying some delicious food and enjoying the fun atmosphere of the beautiful Iveagh Gardens.

To whet our appetite even more, the menus for the event have just been announced. Starting from this year's theme – the ‘Food Lover’s Playground' – restaurants have been working on tasty and artistic takes on the playful theme.

Suesey Street’s has come up with the ‘Suesey Cornetto’, made of organic smoked salmon mousse, thyme cone, beetroot cured salmon and pickled beetroot, as well as an enticing and mysterious ‘Pic ‘n’ Mix dessert.

We definitely won't miss the entirely pink menu from Jaipur, created in homage to the Indian women’s rights activists who have made big changes. That should get quite a few likes on the 'gram!

Gin lovers will be tempted to try King Sitric’s gunpowder G&T with grapefruit oysters, while Banyi Sushi will serve Dragon Uramaki – deep fried breaded jumbo prawns, cucumber, avocado, capelin roe and wasabi mayo.

Trendy new opening Glover’s Alley will also be a Daily Special restaurant on Sunday the 17th with offerings such as aged beef tartare, button mushroom, hazelnut, chive.

The Exchequer will offer some fun-inspired desserts, such as Beetroot and Chocolate Cones, a sweet combination of beetroot semifreddo, chocolate mousse and ginger granola.

With the fabulous weather we have been enjoying, you might be tempted to follow one of the masterclasses in barbecuing.

The Big Green Egg Barbecue Outdoor Cooking Area will show a higher level of outdoor cooking with dishes like slow cooked brisket of Lambay beef, bbq beetroot and potato chive, summer chopped salad, charred horseradish dressing cooked on the stylish ceramic egg-shaped barbecue.

To get even more of a flavour of everything on offer at this year’s Taste of Dublin and to purchase tickets on sale from €15, go to www.tasteofdublin.ie

Ever heard the claim that dog owners can actually resemble their canine companions?

Well turns out the same could actually be true for humans and their partners.

In general, long-term couples tend to develop similar mannerisms and facial expressions. It’s cute, most of the time.

But have you ever looked at your partner and thought ‘actually, dya know what, we look really alike’?

You only have to look at any Hollywood red carpet to see plenty examples of the phenomenon.

Take Jessica Alba and her husband Cash Warren for example.

Or LeAnn Rimes and her husband, Eddie Cibrian.

And Courtney Cox and Snow Patrol's Johnny McDaid.

Well, turns out, if you do happen to share some physical attributes with your significant other, you guys could actually have similar genes.

Yep.

Research conducted at universities in Pennsylvania, California and Boston found that people will most likely marry someone with the same ancestry.

Results of the study, published in PLOS Genetics, concluded that people of Northern European, Southern European and Ashkenazi Jewish descent are the worst offenders.

But thankfully, after studying families over three generations, researchers found that the tendency to hook up with someone we share great-great-great grandparents with, has declined over time.

With Father’s Day just around the corner (Sunday, June 17th…), it’s time to get your thinking cap on so that main man in your life doesn’t end up opening ANOTHER pair of socks.

Taxi drivers, chefs and carriers-of-all things heavy, we would be lost without the dads in our lives, and they absolutely deserve to be treated to something nice.

And we’re not the only ones who think this!

According to MummyPages, mums will, on average, spend €68 on their Father’s Day gift – that’s €24 more than last year.

And, no, that’s not €68 worth of socks!

In fact, socks, ties, shirts, wallets, cufflinks and any chore-related tools were MummyPages mums’ least popular gifts.

This year, it’s all about the personalised gift – like plastering that absolute cringe family photo all over your dad’s new favourite mug!

“I am so happy to see personalised gifts almost topping the list of gift purchase ideas this Father’s Day. I have no doubt that every parent will testify to the fact that they always cherish a personalised gift, whether it is handmade or one that captures a special family moment,” Laura Erskine, Head of Community for MummyPages.ie said.

“Gifts that are personalised take a little bit more planning of course, so now is the time to get creative with handprints and crafts or selecting your favourite Daddy pictures from your camera roll. You don’t have to spend a fortune to create a personalised photo gift and a good example of that is the quality range of photo gifts from FujiFilm.

“These include photo mugs for Dad’s tea or coffee, photo blocks for Dad’s office desk, or a photo book of your family’s special moments with Dad, all starting from as little as €9.99.”

Stop what you're doing and prepare for a second dose of Royal wedding fever, because Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are rumoured to be enjoying some quality time in Ireland as we speak.

According to reports, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are staying at the 5 star  Ashford Castle in Cong, Co. Mayo, which has previously played host to other high-profile guests such as John Lennon and former US President Ronald Reagan.

Locals in the area claim there's a huge security presence around the grounds of the castle, with all perimeters and local roads being patrolled.

It was previously reported that the newlyweds would likely travel to Ireland shortly after their wedding, however it was originally thought that the pair would attend a series of events over the two-day visit.

While there has been no official confirmation of a Royal presence in Ireland, all signs seem to indicate the newlyweds are in town!

If you were a pre teen in the 00s, you definitely had a Bratz Doll or two (or twenty).

From their amazingly MTV-inspired clothing to their freaky pop-off feet, the dolls captured the hearts and imaginations of kids all over Ireland.

Everyone had their favourite Bratz (this writer's was Jade) and major fights could erupt on the playground over who go to be who during whatever games were played with the dolls.

They were super glamorous, despite their odd proportions, and there are definitely still a few rattling around attics across the nation.

Despite us all having grown out of playing with Yasmin and Sasha, pop culture is still obsessed with them

From the Bratz Doll-esque Snapchat filter to Kylie Jenner constantly being compared to the dolls thanks to her dramatic eye liner and full lips.

Now, one talented MUA has turned herself into a life-size Bratz Doll using the power of makeup alone.

Promise Tamang dressed up as Bratz Doll for Halloween, and her look left her one million Instagram followers shook.

The MUA copied the intricate and dramatic makeup which is painted onto the face of each doll, and used face paint to make her eyes appear huge and doll-like.

She also added some very noughties pencilled brows, and added mega volume to her lips with crazy over-lining.

The finishing touches were not one, but two black wigs for long, voluminous hair (though we gave our dolls many the terrible haircut), oversized plastic sunglasses, and door-knocker earrings.

The finished look is rather unsettling, but we're loving the nostalgia.

Netflix has confirmed that popular drama series 13 Reasons Why will return for a third season. They shared a teaser video for the next season online, which will return to screens in 2019.

The series features many gripping and controversial topics and has often been criticised for being too graphic.

However, despite the controversy, the show has only grown in popularity since it first aired on the streaming service in 2017.

Selena Gomez, who is executive producer of the show, revealed that she will be returning for the next season.

The singer admitted that she was worried when the show first aired, “We were all so nervous. I think Netflix bought it because they could see how passionate we were about it."

However, Katherine Langford, who played lead character Hannah Baker is not returning for the third season.

She revealed the news in a touching Instagram post: “As most of you know 13 Reasons Why was my first ever job and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to tell Hannah's story so fully in season 1 and to be asked back for a season 2.”

She thanked her fans for their never-ending love and support for the past two years: “Thank you for filling my life with love and light  This show will always be a special part of my life, and regardless of whether Hannah is there or not, I know that I will continue to strive to do work that is meaningful and has a positive impact.”

We all know the drill – you're casually scrolling through Twitter or Instagram when that little ding noise notifies you that you have a new message request.

Upon opening, you realise to your horror that it is a thirsty internet predator looking to shock or seduce you with his poorly angled, embarrassing iPhone photo of his penis.

Two things happen at this stage of proceedings, either you completely reel with shock and disgust and feel truly violated by the act, or anger consumes you and you proceed to completely destroy him with CAPS LOCK ON insults and then block him. (or both)

Either way, it's an uncomfortable experience no one should ever have to go through. Why, still, in 2018 do men think it's acceptable to send women unwanted pictures of their junk?

A new study by YouGov showed that 46pc of British women had received a dick pic in their time.

Of those women, nine out of ten received one without having asked for it.

Women aged 18-25 were the most likely to receive unsolicited nudes (26th birthday, come at us).

While unsolicited pictures are disgusting and offensive, not all nude swapping is nonconsensual.

12pc of women in the survey told YouGov that they had requested dick pics from their partners

Callie Thorpe is one of the world's most popular fashion bloggers, and she just so happens to be plus sized.

The online star was recently included in a British Vogue round up of some of the hottest summer swimwear trends, alongside the likes of Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid.

Since the release of the piece, Callie has faced more online abuse than ever before, and created a heartfelt video discussing how she copes with such a level of intense scrutiny over her shape.

A post shared by Callie Thorpe (@calliethorpe) on

Sharing a snap of the British Vogue article Callie snapped back at body shamers saying: 'To all the people who called me Fat, Ugly and treated me like trash because of my weight growing up….Catch me on Vogue with your WCW.'

However, Callie is only human, and the negativity forced her to respond to the hate.

'They were just so awful,' she begins in the video, 'that I couldn’t even get them out of my mind after I read them.'

'There was 900 comments, and pretty much all of them were vile, like violent, abusive comments.'

A post shared by Callie Thorpe (@calliethorpe) on

'It was just the worst thing I’ve ever read in the last five years that I’ve been blogging or doing anything on the internet. In the night I couldn’t sleep because of some of the stuff I read about myself.'

Callie has been a complete trailblazer in the realm of body positivity, and her open showcase of how shaming can effect a person was harrowing.

We can only commend her for being unashamedly herself, and maintaining her body positive stance.

A US judge who sentenced Stanford University swimmer Brock Turner to just six months in prison has been removed from office.

Santa Clara County Judge Aaron Persky faced huge condemnation after he handed the convicted sex attacker an outrageously lenient sentence, prompting supporters of the victim to launch a campaign to recall the judge.

Under normal sentencing, Turner would likely have received between two and 14 years in prison.

A special election saw Californians vote to unseat the judge after nearly 15 years of practice.

Persky is the first California judge to be recalled since 1932.

The 2016 trial sparked widespread backlash for its focus on the victim's drinking habits and sexual experience.

In a statement read in court before sentencing, she said: "You took away my worth, my privacy, my energy, my time, my intimacy, my confidence, my own voice, until today."

Speaking about the impact of the Judge Persky's removal, Michele Dauber, an outspoken women’s rights campus activist who launched the recall campaign said: "The broader message of this victory is that violence against women is now a voting issue."

"This is a historical moment in time. Women are standing up for their rights, and there is a national reckoning."

Netflix fans, prepare to get excited.

Orange is the New Black season 6 drops onto Netflix on July 27th.

The streaming service took to Twitter nto give OITNB viewers a look at what's to come.

Season five went down in real time, stretching the season over three days as the inmates gained control of Litchfield Prison after Poussey's death.

In a sneak preview, Netflix revealed that the new season is headed "to the Max."

In prison terms, this hints that the rioting inmates are being sent to a new maximum security prison.

The now iconic series has already been renewed for a seventh season, so we can expect plenty more from Piper, Alex and co.

As a big advocate of the 'treat yo'self' mantra, it's safe to say that when I was invited to stay in on of Dublin's swankiest hotels, I was more and than happy to pack my bags and head off for the night.

It's not always easy to find luxury in the heart of the a city, but The Address at Dublin 1 does just that. The newly built add-on to the North Star Hotel expertly combines classic hospitality with modern living, making it the perfect spot for a cheeky staycation this summer.

Conveniently located on Amiens Street, right across form Connolly station, the hotel acts as the perfect base to explore the city. So, whether you're visiting the capital for the first time, or just fancy being a tourist in your own town, you might as well do it in style.

The Room

I want to start by saying that as someone who has slummed it in some of the dingiest hostels Europe has to offer, I was taken aback when I realised there was an actual robe with my name on it (well, it didn't ACTUALLY have my name on it, but you know what I mean) neatly hung in the wardrobe upon my arrival.

The room was clean, modern and oh-so-sleek – without feeling too pretentious.

The high-tech design made operating the controls an absolute dream. The lighting, curtains and room temperature could be controlled from the various panels located a different points throughout the suite. There was even one right beside the bed meaning I didn't even have to lift my head off the pillow when I forgot the switch off the bathroom light – the DREAM!

There was also an espresso machine which made getting out of the gorgeous king size bed that little bit easier.

The Facilities

On site there is a fully equipped gym with Scandinavian saunas and two exclusive rooftop lounges which offer free refreshments 24 hours a day as well as unique views of the city's landscape.

The 24-hour concierge and in-room dining make light work of those late-night cravings and I'm not ashamed to admit the I had a pizza delivered directly to my door in a midnight moment of madness.

What's more, the staff go above and beyond to make your experience the best it can possibly be and are always on hand to answer any queries you may have.

The Food

McGettigans Cookhouse & Bar offers a mouth-watering lunch and dinner menu, as well as tasty cocktails amd premium wines to wash it all down.

I'm a sucker for old-fashioned cooking, so of course I went for the the roast breast of free range chicken served with creamy mash and tender stem broccoli – and oh boy, it did not disappoint.

Cooked to perfection and quickly served, the portion was big enough to satisfy my (rather large) appetite to the point where, to my dismay, I didn't even have room for dessert.

Overall, my experience at The Address was utterly flawless. Bar one or two minor hiccups involving the somewhat confusing layout and my atrocious sense of direction, the whole stay went off without a hitch, and I can confidently say I'll be making a return visit.
