father’s day

Former Geordie Shore reality star Gary Beadle celebrated Father's Day in an extra special way this year, announcing he is about to become a dad for a second time.

The 31-year-old shared an adorable image of his son Chester sporting a babygro which said, "I am going to be a big brother."

Gaz sounded thrilled to bits with the news, showing off a cachet of photographs and scans. His model girlfriend, Emma McVey, also shared her joy with her social media followers.

Shemazing mums have collaborated with FujiFilm to capture the magic of Father's Day, and answer the question of why it's so important.

We asked our readers why the day isn't just a 'Hallmark Holiday', and the results were both hilarious and heart-warming.

Some lovely moments have been shared between their children and Dad, judging by the positive reaction. 93 percent of Irish mums agree that the day should be celebrated.

Over half of mums surveyed admitted to playing down the role that a father plays during the child-rearing years, from infancy to teenage times.

However, 100 percent of mums had nothing but pure love when asked how it feels to witness a special moment between a dad and their children, unsurprisingly.

We asked Shemazing mums for examples of some of these priceless snapshots, and the answers made us believe in Father's Day even more.

According to our mums, their #BestDadMoments include; "The times he allowed our girls to give him a full makeover", "The times it rained and he took over pitch-side so I didn't get wet" and "The day he taught our little ones to ride their bikes".

"The nights he got our children to sleep when I simply couldn't", was another classic example, and "The times he let me be 'good cop' when disciplining our children".

"The life experience stories he shares with our children to teach and empower", "the promises he makes to our children to always be there for them no matter what"and  "The way he makes our children feel when they share their latest achievement", were more sweet gems.

Another memory was, "The belief he instils in our children that they can do and be anything they desire", which all parents can relate to.

"The pure love I witnessed when he held our child for the first time," is possibly the most special moment in a father's life.

Last but not least,"The dad-dance moves he performs for our children for fun or to get them out of a funk". Hilarious, but necessary sometimes. Father's Day is just around the corner, Sunday, June 16.

It's time to get your last minute gifts in order. Our mums showed a strong preference for personalised gifts using photos to capture their #BestDadMoments.

According to Shemazing mums, the top five most popular gifts this Father's Day are; A personalised photo gift, a new gadget or tech gift, aftershave, golf balls or sporting accessories, and a selection of craft beer.

Laura Erskine, Head of Community for MummyPages.ie, spoke about the Father's Day findings;

"Sometimes us mums can get a little jealous when we see that dad is the one that they screech excitedly for when he gets home from work, and we’ve been the one cooking, cleaning, tending to homework and cut knees.

"Not to mention the joyous laughter that only dad can elicit when he wrestles them on the bed or blows raspberries on their tummy, and we’re the one reminding them to brush teeth before bed," she added.

“But for all of these #BestDadMoments, there are also those moments where dad takes matters into his own hands and allows us mums to have some peace and quiet.

"Very often, we as mums don’t let dad to be an active parent as much as we should," Laura continued.

"We need to let dad be dad –  unsupervised, with no prior instructions – just figuring it out as we do everyday.

This Father’s Day, "I would urge mums to let dads to be dads, so that both the joyous moments and the more mundane ones, can be more equally shared by both parents.”

“For those considering a special gift this Father’s Day, there is nothing that beats a personalised photo gift depicting one of the #BestDadMoments saved on your camera roll," Laura says.

Creating a personalised photo gift and doesn't have to cost a fortune. FujiFilm have a quality range of photo gifts, including mugs, photo blocks for office desks or a photo book of special moments starting from just €9.99.

For any mums juggling a hectic family life and need a last-minute gift, definitely try the FujiFilm Imagine app, which allows you to order your personalised photo gift from your smartphone and collect it from your nearest store or delivered nationwide.

Father's Day is always a magical time for the dads out there, why not make it a day to remember?

With Father’s Day just around the corner (Sunday, June 17th…), it’s time to get your thinking cap on so that main man in your life doesn’t end up opening ANOTHER pair of socks.

Taxi drivers, chefs and carriers-of-all things heavy, we would be lost without the dads in our lives, and they absolutely deserve to be treated to something nice.

And we’re not the only ones who think this!

According to MummyPages, mums will, on average, spend €68 on their Father’s Day gift – that’s €24 more than last year.

And, no, that’s not €68 worth of socks!

In fact, socks, ties, shirts, wallets, cufflinks and any chore-related tools were MummyPages mums’ least popular gifts.

This year, it’s all about the personalised gift – like plastering that absolute cringe family photo all over your dad’s new favourite mug!

“I am so happy to see personalised gifts almost topping the list of gift purchase ideas this Father’s Day. I have no doubt that every parent will testify to the fact that they always cherish a personalised gift, whether it is handmade or one that captures a special family moment,” Laura Erskine, Head of Community for MummyPages.ie said.

“Gifts that are personalised take a little bit more planning of course, so now is the time to get creative with handprints and crafts or selecting your favourite Daddy pictures from your camera roll. You don’t have to spend a fortune to create a personalised photo gift and a good example of that is the quality range of photo gifts from FujiFilm.

“These include photo mugs for Dad’s tea or coffee, photo blocks for Dad’s office desk, or a photo book of your family’s special moments with Dad, all starting from as little as €9.99.”

Looking into the reflective glass front of the bookshop window as I adjust my jeans and pow – there's the emotional gut punch I keep experiencing.

Past my reflection and atop the display of novels in front of me is a placard proclaiming the words 'perfect for Dad!'

Wandering into Tesco for teabags and there it is again, a stand of Fathers Day cards – pow.

Every time I unlock my iPhone and check my calendar, there's that event dot marking June 17 – pow.

Scrolling through Twitter and there's a Father's Day gift guide for the adventure loving Dad, a filtered snap of a friend and her Dad on Facebook, and a Youtube video of Father's Day pranks – pow, pow, pow.

For most people, a rack of cheesy cards or an email reminder from Amazon about gift buying would pass by without a second thought, but for me, this will be my first Father’s Day without my Dad.

To be honest, I'm not ready fo the Sunday after next, or any Father's Day after that, but I also wasn't ready for my first birthday after my Dad died, or Easter, or my university graduation, and those days slid by without much to note other than an extra heavy ache in my chest.

Last Father's Day, I don't even think I bothered to go home to visit my family in Galway.

My Dad wasn't sick then, he was exactly as I want to remember him – and we were completely unaware of the cancer that was already eroding his bones and liver beyond repair.

I suppose technically he was already sick but we just had no idea yet. I probably rang him to wish him a good day, we would have exchanged pleasantries and he would have asked me all about Dublin – how is the rent search, how's work, any lads on the scene, I hope you're sticking to quitting smoking, etc.

I would have asked him how the sunflowers were this year, how my little brother's match was and how he was feeling about being another year older, his birthday having fallen on June 11.

I don't actually remember, as at the time it was just another day, I had no idea that on that day the following year he would no longer physically exist in this world. I completely took for granted that he would just always be there, tucked away in Galway, pottering around the garden, taking his motorbike out for a spin, watching Game of Thrones in the evenings with a strong cuppa.

Four months ago, I lost my Dad to cancer. He was diagnosed in September, declared terminal not long after and lost his battle with the viperous disease this Spring.

A short illness, in the grand scheme of things, but the injustice of his death is what makes the tears still gather when I consider what a vibrant, eclectic life he had, what a strong and salt-of-the-earth man he was, and how inexcusable it is that cancer was able to extinguish his life in just six months.

I won't be sending a card this year, or picking up the phone to his call, or making him breakfast in bed, my little sister's handmade, undoubtedly glitter-coated Father's Day gift perched on the side of the breakfast tray.

I'm not sure exactly how the day is going to go – it will be difficult, but what will I be doing with it?

I'm lucky enough to still have my amazing Mum, two dazzling if maddening little sisters and my thoughtful little brother. Casting a wider net, I have an array of kindly aunts and uncles, a clatter of cousins and a handful of best friends I can count on for absolutely anything.

No doubt, there will still be cascades of tears shed by everyone in my house on that day, but rather than wallow in the fresh and still stinging memory of my Dad's death, on June 17, I'll be celebrating the lives of those who are still here with me.

I'll actually make the pilgrimage down to Galway to spend time with my family, and call up my friends for the chats and text my aunties – I'll appreciate every second of their company before I ever get the opportunity to regret that I didn't.
