Yearly Archives: 2018

Fans of The Crown have been spoiled with tons of new information about the upcoming season. The show may not be returning to our screens until 2019, but that doesn’t mean we’re not excited about it.

We can’t wait to see what happens in season three, which is set to feature some explosive storylines.

The show has been unveiling the new cast over the past few months, and we just can’t get enough of these announcements.

Today, Netflix revealed that Josh O'Connor and Marion Bailey are joining the cast of the Netflix original series.

Josh O'Connor will play Prince Charles. Speaking of his role as the future king of England, Josh said: “Seasons 3 and 4 will follow some of the most turbulent events in the Prince of Wales’s life and our national story and I’m excited to be bringing to life the man in the midst of it all.”

He added: “I’m very aware it’s a formidably talented family to be joining, but reliably informed I have the ears for the part and will fit right in."

Marion Bailey will take on the role of the Queen Mother, she gushed about her new role: “Wonderful to be joining The Crown. It’s a brilliant show and we have a tough act to follow but what a gift to be playing the fascinating and greatly loved Queen Mother. Thrilled to be on board and working with such a top notch team."

Earlier this year, Olivia Colman was confirmed as Queen Elizabeth. She will star alongside Tobias Menzie, who is set to play a middle-aged Prince Philip.

Helena Bonham Carter will star as Princess Margaret and Ben Daniels will star as her husband Anthony-Armstrong Jones.

Call The Midwife’s Erin Doherty will play Princess Anne.

We cannot wait for The Crown to return next year.

It has been a year since Beyoncé  last showed us photos of her adorable twins, Rumi and Sir.

And she has recently revealed more rare photos of her children on her website. They are just too adorable!

The family has been living it up while vacationing around Europe, sailing and spending some quality time together in between the singer’s world tour gigs.

In the picture, the pop star is holding both twins on her lap, rocking a retro, chic hippie look.

Her daughter Rumi is giggling and smiling while her son Rumi seems to be in a more serious mindset with his gaze fixed on the floor.

The family is shown in a few other pictures posted on the site, and they seem to be having some much-needed family fun time.

Another image shows Beyoncé’s husband, Jay-Z, holding Rumi’s hand and enjoying the gorgeous view of the ocean coast before them.

The parents were careful not to leave out their oldest daughter, Blue Ivy.

She is pictured sitting next to her mother in matching, pink dresses with radiant smiles.

The pair look strikingly similar in the photo! Maybe there will be a Blue Fierce?

Blue Ivy was also seen in a black and white bathing suit in the pool with a pair of sunglasses and a tropical juice. #winningatlife

We have no doubt she is every bit as fabulous and legendary as her mother.

Beyoncé  and Jay-Z have always been sparse with social media posts of their children; no doubt in a loving attempt to protect them from public scrutiny.

We were thrilled to see her little ones are happy and healthy and spending some time with their fabulous mama.

The singing duo is continuing the rest of the world tour in the U.S. and Beyoncé's last performance will be October 4th in Seattle, Washington.

So, who among you has been been advised to 'eat like a king at breakfast, a prince at lunch and a pauper at dinner'?

While it sounds like the kind of phrase our grandmothers might bandy about, there is a huge amount to be said for the logic behind it.

In fact, a recent study has confirmed that the key to a healthy weight is to follow that particular eating plan as closely as possible.

With data collected from 50,000 participants over the course of a seven-year study, researchers at Loma Lida University in California established that consuming a large breakfast leads to a decrease in an individual's Body Mass Index.

These findings were in contrast to those who opted to consume a large dinner.

"Breakfast eaters experienced a decreased BMI compared with breakfast skippers. Relative to subjects who ate their largest meal at dinner, those who consumed breakfast as the largest meal experienced a significant decrease in BMI," the study read.

Researchers are of the opinion that a hearty breakfast lowers the chance of snacking and increases the possibility that the individual will adhere to a sensible eating plan.

"Our results suggest that in relatively healthy adults, eating less frequently, no snacking, consuming breakfast, and eating the largest meal in the morning may be effective methods for preventing long-term weight gain," read the study.

"Eating breakfast and lunch 5 – 6 hours apart and making the overnight fast last 18 –19 h may be a useful practical strategy," researchers added.

The findings were published in the Journal of Nutrition.

Most of us have experienced grief at some point in our lives, and it is hard to overcome. However, the lovely O'Toole family are here to help anyone who needs support during tragic times.

It is amazing how many lives that they have already changed!

Unfortunately, the O'Toole's have experienced their own heartbreak, losing three beloved family members way at young ages.

But they have not let this terrible grief keep them down forever. Instead, they have decided to give back and help others who are experiencing a similar situation.

The family lost 7-year-old Declan to a brain tumour, 30-year-old Jacinta to a brain aneurysm, and 32-year-old Fintan, who was closest to Declan.

In their honour, they started a charity that aims to provide grief-stricken children with a support network as well as an outlet to celebrate their own personal achievements and triumphs.

The charity is called Jacinta’s smile and has already been able to help children and young adults everywhere.

Now, the family is starting a new initiative and joining with other organisations to make counselling services available all throughout Ireland.

They will be offering mentoring services as well, where young members who have been helped by the charity will become a ‘Big Brother/Sister’ to new members.

The Big Brother program is a great way for children who have trouble talking to adults, to open up to and learn from children their age that have been where they are.

And right now, the O’Toole family wants you to be able to partake in their adventure.

All you have to do is send in a postcard. Easy enough, right?

Mail an anonymous postcard with a message to a loved one that you’ve lost. It could be one sentence or 100, depending what you can fit on there.

(Yes, we are talking about old school mailing in the post. The process of describing your feelings and sending it off to somewhere far is a great way to help you heal).

The message can be a photo, a story, or whatever you like.

It is a great way to purge yourself of any held back emotions or feelings of missing out on that one last thing you could’ve said to someone.

On this postcard, you write or draw whatever you want. Imagine you had one more postcard that you could send to someone …what would you say?

Please send postcards to the following address:

#Wish You Were Here
Jacinta’s Smile Headquarters
Vita House
Abbey Street
Roscommon Town
Co. Roscommon

All the postcards will be uploaded to the Jacinta's Smile Facebook page

Netflix are introducing a cool new feature to user profiles and we are rather excited about it.

Their profile icons are getting a major makeover in honour of a very special anniversary.

In August 2013, Netflix launched profiles. Netflix became uniquely yours, personalised to you and your taste. You no longer had to see your roommate’s movie suggestions in your Top Picks or your little sister’s cartoons in your Continue Watching. Your profile features the best suggestions based on what you watch.

The profile icons you’ve used for the last five years are getting a fun makeover. They’re also introducing a bunch of new icons — including some of the most beloved characters from Netflix shows and movies. Get excited, things are about to get a lot more personal.

Cathy Conk, Director, Product Innovation said “We know the series and movies on Netflix are more than just things you watch to pass the time. The stories — and the characters in them —are also your heroes, frenemies, soulmates and everything in between. We’re thrilled to give you a way to show your fandom and make your connection with Netflix more unique.”

“Profiles are key to creating a highly personalized Netflix experience. By watching on your own profile, we can showcase suggestions for TV shows and movies we’re sure you won’t want to miss,” she added.

“We’re always working to make it easier for our members to connect with stories they’ll love and creating your profile is the first step. If you don’t have one yet, we highly suggest you make one — and personalize it with an icon like Luke Cage, Crazy Eyes, or another one of your favourite characters.”

The new profile icons will be rolling out on the website, mobile, and TV devices over the next few weeks.

An Irishman has sadly passed away in the Greek wildfires. He has been named as Brian O'Callaghan-Westropp.

Brian was on his honeymoon with wife Zoe Holohan when the fires broke out.

The pair tried to flee seaside resort Mati, but were separated in their efforts to escape.

Zoe was taken to hospital in Athens and is understood to be receiving treatment for burns to her head and hands. It is believed she will make a full recovery.

The newlyweds married in Ireland last Thursday before jetting off to Greece on Saturday.

Their families issued a statement following the news of Brian’s passing:

"We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of our family member, Brian O'Callaghan-Westropp.

"The families would respectfully appreciate privacy at this time as we grieve and as Zoe makes her recovery.

"Funeral arrangement will be announced at a later stage,” they added.

The Greek wildfires have claimed the lives of over 80 people. The death toll is expected to rise.

Rescuers continue to search the area for survivors.

This is the worst fire crisis the country has seen in over a decade. The wildfires are a recurring issue during the hot, dry summer months in Attica.

It is believed the flames were fanned by high winds this week.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is said to be “providing consular assistance to a number of individuals in Greece.”

Anyone with concerns should contact the Irish Embassy in Athens 0030-210-723-2771 or  01-4082000.

We are all very aware that Ireland is in the grips of a homeless crisis right now.

Adults, teens and families are being forced to live on the streets, in hostels or in hotels for long periods of time. And it doesn't seem to be getting any better.

In fact, at the end of the month of June, 9,872 people were accessing emergency accommodation around the country; 912 were aged between 18 -24.

"Dean" is one of these young adults who has found themselves living in emergency accommodation.

He has been homeless since November 2017, and accessed Peter McVerry Trust's homeless service in December of that year.

The 21-year-old is currently residing in one of their services in Dublin. His name has been changed to protect his identity.

Dean is well aware of the stereotypical views people have on those who find themselves in emergency accommodation.

He wrote a rap titled Paint Me to challenge these stereotypical views, including the different routes to becoming homeless.

The rap highlights the pain of being homeless and the stigma which surrounds it, admitting that telling people he has to go back to his hostel is a "conversation killer".

Dean also shares how becoming being homeless is not something that you decide to do – that's not how it works.

"This ain't no choice of mine

And in no point in time

Did I decide that I

Did I decide that I

This ain't no price is right

And in no point in time

Did I decide that I

Did I decide that I

Wanted to be homeless."

It's incredibly eye-opening to listen to it, and we applaud Dean for sharing his experiences and thoughts.

The Peter McVerry Trust provides low-threshold entry services, primarily to younger people and vulnerable adults with complex needs, and offers pathways out of homelessness based on the principles of the Housing First model.

Scrolling by multiple #cleaneating hashtags is par for the course if you're a regular social media user.

And while the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle is to be commended, a recent study into the social effects of its pursuit makes for interesting reading.

According to the authors of the study, Suzanne M. Nevin and Lenny R. Vartanian, there exist potential negative social consequences of clean dieting.

Investigating the theory, the researchers explained that they asked participants to read about a specific individual before evaluating them.

"In Study 1, participants read a vignette describing a woman following a “clean” diet, a woman with anorexia, or a control target (minimal information about the individual)," the findings read.

"In Study 2, participants read a vignette describing a woman with orthorexia, a woman displaying identical orthorexic behaviors but without the orthorexia label, a woman with anorexia, or a control target. Participants then rated the target individual on a range of measures assessing stereotypes, emotions, and behavioral intentions toward the target."

Based on the participants' assessments, researchers quickly learned that the individual who professes to be a clean-eater was judged more negatively than someone whose dietary habits were not referred to.

The findings were similar in both studies leading researchers to conclude that a stigma surrounding clean-eating does indeed exist in today's society.

"Overall, these findings highlight the potential negative social consequences of clean dieting and orthorexia nervosa, and point to perceptions of control and blame as potential mechanisms underlying the stigma of these conditions," they conclude.

"The present research provided support for the suggestion that there may be adverse social ramifications for clean dieting behaviors, and found that this effect was particularly pronounced when the behaviors were described in a more extreme manner."

Elaborating the motivation behind the studies, the authors explain: "Developing a better understanding of the stigma toward various forms of disordered eating is an important step toward alleviating the social burden endured by individuals with those conditions."

The study has been published in the Journal of Eating Disorders.
