The French government looks set to reassess its laws around sexual consent following two cases where men were acquitted of raping 11-year-old girls.

As it stands, the age of consent in France is 15, however prosecutors must still prove that the sexual act was non-consensual in order to charge the offender with rape.

According to reports, the country's Justice Minister, Nicole Belloubet, confirmed that officials were considering the introduction of a fixed age, below which “consent is presumed not to exist.”

“The question of the age below which the minor's consent is presumed not to exist is crucial, because there are obviously extremely shocking and unacceptable situations,” she said.

There are currently no laws in place that classify sex with someone below a certain age as rape, meaning that if there is no violence involved, many offenders may only be charged with sexual abuse of a minor.

According to The Irish Independent, Marlene Schiappa, a junior minister for gender equality, said that the cut-off could be between the ages of 13 and 15.

“Below a certain age, it is considered that there can be no debate on the sexual consent of a child, and that any child below a certain age would automatically be considered to be raped or sexually assaulted.”

The news come after two recent court cases highlighted the need for stricter laws in relation to the age of consent.

Two men, 29 and 30, who abused two 11-year-old girls in separate incidents, were both acquitted after it was deemed that their acts did not constitute rape under French law.

According to current legislation, a person can only be charged with rape of a minor if the sexual act is committed “by violence, coercion, threat or surprise.”

In Ireland the age of sexual consent is 17, with additional protection in place to protect children under 15.

Other European countries like Germany and Portugal have a lower age of consent at 14.

So, it's safe to say that 2017 has been a pretty terrible year to be a celebrity.

The latest report from property website Daft.ie shows that rents across the country have reached a record high of €1,200 per month.

Figures show that Dublin is the worst affected area with average rents now standing at €1,774, an increase of over 12 per cent on last year.

Further increases where seen in Cork (five per cent), Galway (nine per cent) and Limerick (10.9 per cent).

Author of the report, Ronan Lyons says the report clearly shows that the rent pressure zone system is not working.

“There isn't a single part of the country where rents are increasing less than 4% a year which is what the rent pressure zones are designed to do,” he said.

“It is not clear to me that the system of rent pressure zones is working, in fact it may be having the opposite effect.”

This thought was echoed by homelessness charity Focus Ireland who say that loopholes in the law allow landlords to raise the rent by more than the four per cent limit.

Mike Allen of Focus Ireland said: "The minister has to change that legislation, he has to get rid of that loophole and he has to make sure that families and other people in rented accommodation can rely on the tenancy treatment they have and not see it torn up at a moments notice."

The new rent figures come as the ESRI predict that house prices could rise by up to 20 per cent by 2020 if the rate of supply does not increase.

Arthur Collins has been found guilty of carrying out an acid attack in a London nightclub earlier this year.

According to witness reports, Collins, who was in a relationship with TOWIE star Ferne McCann, doused fellow revellers in the corrosive liquid in a Dalston nightspot.

Collins, who recently became a father when Ferne gave birth to his daughter Sunday on November 2, admitted he had thrown liquid on the night in question, but claimed he thought it was a date rape drug.

Collins maintains that he took the liquid off two men in the nightclub, who he claims were planning to put it in a female reveller's drink.

The 25-year-old maimed more than a dozen members of the public during the attack on April 17.

Hundreds of people took to the streets of Hollywood this weekend to show support for the victims of sexual misconduct.

Inspired by the hugely successful #MeToo Twitter campaign, men and women marched along Hollywood Boulevard and the Walk of Fame, in a effort to combat a “culture of sexual abuse” in the entertainment industry.

The demonstration follows a number of allegations made against prominent figures in Hollywood including Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and most recently, comedian Louis C.K.

According to Sky News, Tara McNamarra, a 21-year-old protester at the march said: “I've been sexually assaulted multiple times throughout my life.”

"It's affected me in every aspect of my life."

#MeToo is the brainchild of social activist, Tarana Burke, who created the hashtag in the wake of the Weinstein allegations.

It was later popularised on social media by actress, Alyssa Milano, who shared the message with her Twitter followers.

Ahead of Sunday march, Tarana wrote on Facebook: “For every Harvey Weinstein, there's a hundred more men in the neighbourhood who are doing the exact same thing.”

“What we're seeing, at least for now, is a unity of survivors, a community of survivors that have grown out of this #MeToo viral moment, that I'm just hoping and praying that we can sustain.”

Organisers say they hope the march will help to unite survivors of sexual assault and encourage more victim to tp talk about their experiences.

Teaming up with An Post, Tayto has promised that the virtual store will be up and running all year round so you can stock up on your favourite flavour in time for birthdays and 'Crispmas'.

Customers can order a special treat for themselves or a loved one for delivery anywhere around the country, while those who wish to send a package overseas can do so from their local post office.

Carol McCaghy, Senior Brand Manager for Tayto, said: “We are delighted to offer online sales within Ireland. We saw high demand for our merchandise and crisps at our pop up shops; this coupled with the growth of online shopping made it inevitable for us to enter this arena.

“Mr. Tayto is very excited to offer this service and we hope to expand our offerings and shipping areas in the future.”

Gilles Ferrandez, Commercial Director Parcels, An Post said “What a great present to receive in the mail this Christmas! We’ll make sure these precious Tayto gifts reach loved ones near and far safely.

Being the baby of the family has its ups and downs.

Sure, we loved being the centre of attention at family events and even got the odd sneaky fiver here and there, but let's face it – after years of hand-me-downs and fierce sibling rivalry, a few extra quid was the least we deserved.

And while our diplomatic mothers and fathers would never give a definitive answer when asked if we were their favourite child, deep down we knew where their loyalties lay – and now science is here to back us up.

According to new research published in the Journal of Adolescence, the youngest sibling is more likely to be the favourite in the family.

For the study, researchers asked 300 families, each with two teenagers, various question about parent-child relationships.

Mothers and fathers were asked how much warmth and conflict they had with their children, while teenagers were asked to give a brief description of their relationship with their parents.

Results showed that if both younger siblings and parents agree that they are the favourite, the parent-child bond is strengthened.

However, if this feeling was not mutual, the relationship would suffer.

What's more, the study showed that regardless of whether or not an older sibling thought they were the favourite, it has no effect on their relationship with their parents.

“It’s not that first-borns don’t ever think about their siblings and themselves in reference to them…it’s just not as active of a part of their daily life,” says Alex Jensen, assistant professor at the BYU School of Family Life.

“My guess is it’s probably rarer that parents will say to an older sibling, “Why can’t you be more like your younger sibling?” It’s more likely to happen the other way around.”

So basically, younger siblings are often deemed the favourite because we're stubborn little feckers who want to prove that we're better than our older brothers and sisters.

Makes sense really.

There's no doubt that Christmas starts earlier and earlier each year, and while that suits festive enthusiasts down to the ground, it can make it difficult for people who mourn their late loved ones all the more deeply at Christmas.

Tapping into this over the weekend, Twitter user, Rachael Prior, posted a message which ultimately initiated a heartfelt thread on the subject of love and loss.

"Nowhere and no time do I miss my dad more acutely than in the men’s department of M&S at Christmas," she wrote in a post which has been liked almost 12,000 times since Saturday.

Rachael's candour set in motion a discussion which gave the grieving a chance to remember their own loved ones by telling fellow followers how and when they remember their friends and family members.

It makes for emotional reading, but there's a lot to be said for the warmth born of the impromptu discussion.
