As children, queries were often made by well-meaning adults into the existence of a best friend.

When conversation over our newest toy began to stall, the grown-up in question would get stuck into the 'best friend' line of questioning, and hope we'd give them enough info to work with.

"And what's your best friend's name?" "And what do you play together?" "And would she say you're her best friend as well?"

Put in its simplest terms, a best friend helped us to define ourselves when we weren't quite sure what we were all about.

As kids, having a best friend was often paramount. Losing a best friend to a new school was traumatic. But realising your friendship was based on little more than synchronised class timetables was always especially devastating.

As teenagers many of us fell into the trap of assuming that those whose year groups and lifestyles coincided with ours automatically made them worthy contenders for the role of BFF.

And then we left school, started college, took the first step into our chosen careers, and ultimately realised that timing and circumstance have very little to do with the maintenance of a friendship.

While #SquadGoals back in the day might have meant you shared a locker and saw the inside of each other's homes on a regular basis, the term took on a much greater, more profound meaning as you branched out, and began embarking on your own path… by yourself.

Friendships were no longer based on a mutual dislike for a teacher or a mutual admiration for a singer, friendships ran so much deeper.

Friendships became healthy doses of tough love,  tearful 4am phone calls, heartfelt meeting of minds, and the acknowledgement that this person has seen you at your worst, and will still hold your hair back.

And realising that the people you once called friends were merely people to pass the time with until your real mates showed up can be jarring, but it's by no means unique.

Days, weeks or even months might pass before you and your friend would get a chance to properly catch up these days, and yet you know their support is unwavering, their belief resolute and their encouragement persistent.

While Taylor and the crew may have sullied the term, and social media may consider it as 'basic' a concept as Uggs and Pumpkin Spice Lattes, there's a lot to be said for truly believing the people you have surrounded yourself with as an adult –  and the friendships you have cultivated with them – are worthy of aspiration.

It's one of the hardest things to approach when you're working, and can be quite scary to do if you crumble at the thought of rejection – but sometimes, salary negotiations are absolutely essential.

Looking at various articles, discussion pages, and just general advice from colleagues, there are two major mistakes that people make when trying to ask for a raise.

Either, you'll wait and wait for your management to acknowledge your work (and they won't) or, you go into a discussion, totally unprepared and demand X amount of money, and come out with a less than great result.

To avoid these pitfalls, here are three steps to help you along the way before you go anywhere near a meeting room:

1. KNOW what you bring to the table

If you don't already, keep tabs on your wins and your responsibilities. Whether you keep note on Google Drive or in your ratty TY notebook, make sure you write down and record every major project, task and meeting you do well in.

Then, every few months, go back and see how much you have achieved. This way, you will know what you spend your time on, as well as being prepared for the 'what do you bring to the table?' question.

2. KNOW your market rate

There's no point going in and asking for 40 grand, if everyone else in your field is only earning 30.

Research how much your worth, by using Internet tools such as MyWage, or simply, by asking people in and around your industry.

However, don't forget that these will be ballpark numbers. So, consider as much information as you can, and be honest with yourself.

How long are you working there? How much do you put into the company (in the grand scheme of things)? How large is the company? Where are you based? These questions all need to be asked and considered.

business, computer, device

3. Plan, plan, plan

The worst thing you can do is go into a meeting with absolutely no information. Plan your proposal and what you're going to say. Plan an intro and an ending (for both good and bad outcomes).

Make sure you include your data sources and research, and have it all laid out on paper, so everything is clear to both you and your employer.

And be careful not to exaggerate or embellish. If you reach too far, your employer will know this and it could be what tarnishes your whole proposal.

businesswoman, company, computer

It's going to be a daunting conversation, but if you feel you need to go for it, then GO for it.

If you don't get the answer you were hoping for, ask for a review in three or six months time. And, remember to always follow your conversation up with an email.

Whether your salary increases or not, keep tabs on your work going forward and your progress, so you'll be prepared for salary negotiations the next time they come around.

Good luck!

Realistically if you are a woman who exists in society, you have probably had something mansplained to you at some point.

In case you didn't know there was a term for this sexist phenomenon, mansplaining is when a man speaks "condescendingly to a woman about a topic he believes her to be ignorant of, when in fact his own knowledge of the subject is materially incomplete," according to Urban Dictionary.

Image result for eye roll

The possibility that she may know more about the subject than he does is something that the mansplainer simply cannot compute.

The women of Twitter are currently sharing their horror stories with mansplaining, and some of the tales are making us pretty mad.

10. If there is one thing worse than mansplaining, it has to be catcalling.

9. Just because menstruation has the word men in it, doesn't make them experts.

8. You would not get away with that in Ireland, that's for sure.

7. This is just insulting.

6. Those of us with unique names relate…

5. Don't try to school an expert fellas…

4. Is nothing sacred?

3. Because pregnancy is definitely an area of expertise for men.

2. It even happens at work.

1.  Those who are not on the receiving end of sexism probably shouldn't try to explain it to those who are.

As frivolous as it sounds, fashion means everything to me.

It's not just about buying the latest trends or keeping up with fashion designers; for me, it's about owning who you are and making that known to the world.

It showcases your personality, alludes to your nature and hints at your own idiosyncrasies. It's telling the world who you are without saying a word.

A post shared by Louise Cooney (@louisecooney_) on

Since I was young, I always had an eye for the latest trends. I would style my uniform up to stand apart from the other school kids. I cut and sewed my clothes so they would be more 'me'.

The fashion industry faces quite a bit of backlash sometimes. People think it's not important and not something to worry about. But, I worry about it.

Whether it's going to work, a press event, a party or a dinner, I curate outfits in my head for every occasion – sometimes weeks or months in advance.

If I'm not in a good mood, my clothing choices will reflect that. If I want to be a BOSS in work, I dress to make me feel empowered.

And people will call me shallow and materialistic as a result.

I began my career in fashion, working with various stylists in and around Ireland. And some of the first reactions I received when I told people were, 'You? Working in fashion?'

They didn't think it was a real job. They didn't understand what it meant to me to be working with top stylists in the country.

I worked on photoshoots, campaigns, fashion shows and TV shows. I styled regular men and women as well as models and TV presenters.

And the more I worked, the more I realised what an amazing career it is.

But as brilliant as it is, it's also hard and takes a lot of effort. You'll be up at the crack of dawn to head to a photoshoot. You'll be on your hands and knees all day, pinning, cutting and taping clothes to make them look perfect.

And while you may be tired and ready for bed, the minute the creative minds of the stylists, photographers, make-up artists and hair stylists come together, you get a rush of total achievement.

Some of my favourite fashionistas in Ireland, like Courtney Smith, Brendan Courtney, Darren Kennedy, Louise Cooney, Louise O'Reilly and Anouska Proette Brandon, worked their asses off to get where they are.

Whether they're stylists, bloggers or models, it's a tough industry and not something to be dismissed as whimsical or frivolous.

For me, fashion means creativity, it means diversity, it means change, it means hard work and it means owning who you are.

It will forever be an expression of each and every individual.

The wreckage of Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 116 has been located off the Mayo coast.

The helicopter was found 60 metres off Blackrock Island.

A remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) sent down into the water to establish the location of the wrecked craft.

The ROV was unable to confirm if the three still-missing crew members are with the wreckage, which went missing last Tuesday.

"This morning a Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle (ROV) from the Granuaile conducted operations on the sea bed and we located parts of Rescue 116," Superintendent Tony Healy told The Sunday World.

"We're actively assessing what we found…this is a hugely significant step in the ongoing process of the crew of rescue 116".

Search efforts are continuing to recover the missing crewmen, Captain Mark Duffy,Paul Ormsby and Ciarán Smith.

One crew member, Captain Dara Fitzpatrick, was discovered last week in critical condition, but later passed away in hospital.

Festival season is fast approaching, but the Irish festivals have been a little slow in announcing the line ups for summer 2017.

Electric Picnic is notorious for remaining tight lipped on the subject, but tomorrow is the day when all will be revealed.

Final-tier tickets for the three-day festival go on sale at 9am tomorrow, and the line-up will be announced later in the day.

Last year saw acts such as The 1975, who are playing Malahide Castle later this summer, LCD Soundsystem and Lana Del Rey take the main stage.

Fans are expecting a massive line-up from Ireland's biggest music festival, especially after the announcement of The Weeknd, Jack Garrett and Stormzy headlining at Longitude.

Family Weekend Camping, Standard Campervan/Caravan and Family Campervan/Caravan tickets are completely sold out for the gig, but weekend camping tickets and day tickets will be on sale tomorrow.

Set those alarms!

So, in the eyes of the law, we're full-on, card-carrying adults.

And while we longed for that day as children, the reality of the adult world is very, very different; full of responsibilities and commitments we'd rather our parents or, you know, 'real' adults would deal with on our behalf.

Considering this, it's no surprise that many of us get a secret thrill out of performing an adult task or duty without requiring help or, indeed, encouragement from another adult.

And here are just 13 'grown-up' things it's OK to feel smug about totally nailing… every once in a while.

1. Ringing the bank over a statement query instead of hiding under your duvet and praying for the end of the world.

And hanging up feeling informed, placated and mature.

2. Doing a 'big shop' so your meals for the week are sorted in plenty of time, and you don't have to rely on the goodness of co-workers to feed you.

Don't mind me…or my Tupperware, guys.

3. Tending to your laundry BEFORE you run out of clean clothes, and have to wear bikini bottoms under your work trousers.

Three pairs of knickers left and yet here I am loading this drum like a good thing.

4. Cleaning out your handbag and removing every random receipt, frayed Boots voucher and empty Fruit Pastilles wrapped you find.

Eating a fluff-covered Fruit Pastille does not take away from your adult endeavours in any way, shape or form.

5. Buying a packet of treats and getting them to last an entire week instead of eating them in one sitting.

I might not even eat one today at all because I'm the boss.

6. Knowing when your next electricity bill is due, and setting aside the cash in time.

Excuse me while I transfer funds from one account to another like an absolute pro.

7. Cleaning your home from top to bottom despite the fact you're not actually expecting any visitors.

I'm cleaning, and I'm loving it.

8, Replacing the toilet roll, emptying the kitchen bin or putting the J-cloths through the washing machine… of your own accord.

I am holding this house together and no one can take that from me.

9. Setting up a savings account, and actively refusing to remove money from it because this is your time to shine, damn it.

I will not dip in. I will not dip in. I will not dip in.

10. Opting for the second cheapest wine on the menu instead of the cheapest because you're not an animal.

I'm officially going up in the world, people.

11. Bumping into a friend of your parents, and managing to hold an impromptu conversation without feeling awkward.

Look at me asking about their husband's health. My mother would be so proud right now.

12. Cleaning out your makeup bag because you felt like it, and not because there's mould growing on your brushes.

I'll be a renowned MUA at this rate.

13. Checking items off a to-do list you wrote because this whole adulting thing will not get the better of you.

OK, so I may have checked that off even though I haven't done it yet, but I know it'll be a cinch.

Ed Sheeran and Rupert Grint probably get mistaken for one another all the time, especially after the insane Lego House doppelganger video.

Ed has been having a very exciting year thanks to the success of his new tune Shape Of You, and now Rupert is trying his hand at the lyrics.

Sticking to his acting roots, rather than singing the tune, Rupert is acting them out through a dramatic reading.

The results are as funny as you would think, especially when it comes to reading the multiple  "Oh, I" refrains in the chorus.

How Rupert held it together so well, we'll never know.

We thought we'd seen it all when the gin and tonic Easter egg came into our lives, but clearly we were mistaken.

Now, an off-licence in Northern Ireland has come up with a Buckfast Easter Egg, for those who aren't partial to a G&T.

The Bucky egg is the unique endeavour of D-Bee's offie, and it's quite an entrepreneurial feat.

D-Bee's Off Licence/Facebook

Inside the yellow box, you’ll find a chocolate egg, which unfortunately is not Bucky flavoured, and a miniature bottle of the tonic wine.

There is also an array of Buckfast emblazoned merchandise, including a lighter and a pen.

D-Bee's Off Licence/Facebook

There are plenty of Bucky fans that we can think of who'd love to get their hands on this egg.

You can order these Easter eggs from the off-licence, located in Lurgan, Armagh by giving them a ring or email.

Excuse us, we have a quick phone call to make….

While we may all be moaning about how long it's taking to build the new Luas lines, we can't deny that the Luas is an oh-so handy way of getting around the city.

However, if your Leap Card often pulls a Houdini and escapes from your clutches at the crucial tag-on moments, you may be partial to paying by card at the machine.

Since the dawn of the Luas era, there has been a minimum spend on card transactions, which has forced people to pay for a full line route when they only wanted to go a few short stops.

Now, the Luas is doing away with the rule and we're definitely happy about it.

"There is no longer any minimum limit for Credit or Debit Card transactions at Luas Ticket Machines," reads a statement on the Luas information page.

"You can now use Credit or Debit Cards for purchases from €0 to €150 at any Luas Ticket Machine."

There are always some weird beauty hacks doing the rounds online, but the latest one is completely bonkers.

Beauty blenders have become the makeup application tool of choice for MUAs and mere mortals alike, but some beauty bloggers are mixing it up with a very unexpected tool.

Eggs are a pretty versatile food, but now they are being incorporated into our beauty routines.

A post shared by NADI (@officialnadi) on

According to a few in the online makeup community, hard-boiled eggs are the newest way to apply your foundation, contour and even eye shadow.

The experiment (or should we say, eggs-periment) was first undertaken by MUA Nadi, of Pop Luxe.

In a YouTube video, the makeup fan applied a full face of makeup using the protein-filled snack, and it went surprisingly well.

"Oh my gosh, this is actually working really, really well," he said.

"This kind of feels like a really cold SiliSponge but it smells like sewage, like eggs, so that's a turnoff — but it's actually doing a pretty good job."

Another beauty blogger, Esther Gbudje, also attempted the look and had a similar experience.

"The egg did give me the flawless look I was going for, and it doesn't absorb any product at all," she told Allure

We're not convinced that boiled eggs are about to take over from beauty blenders, but this experiment was pretty unique.

We just hope that their faces didn't have that distinctive eggy scent after application…
