We all do it. Remember that absolutely mortifying thing you did seven years ago in school that you can't seem to shake off?

The anxiety of saying "you're welcome" instead of "thank you" when someone holds the door open for you, the sheer sweat-worthy fear of falling down (or up) the stairs on your bus, you name it, and we've worried about it.

We've always assumed that our furry little friends simply don't have these worries, but now SCIENCE (gasp) has disproved this, and we're shook.

The Royal Society scientific journal has published a study which supports the result that doggos struggle to nod off if they have anything troubling them, meaning that we're not as different as we think.

All that time that you lay in your bed, pondering that terrible moment when you asked your friend how their grand-dad up the North is getting on in his nursing home, and they reply that they are, in fact, deceased, leaving you stewing in shame.

The time in work that you were wandering around with your knickers tucked into the back of your skirt, the time you threw up at the local disco after one Blue WKD, even the time you said "keep the change" to the lad in Spar, and it was only a five cent coin.

Doggies apparently sit up and ponder their embarrassments and worries too, maybe they get anxiety about the lack of 'good boy' praise which they received that day.

"Does my human still love me?" They think, as they rest their head on their paws, with a slow, violin concerto playing in the background.

"What if they actually don't like cleaning up my poop?"

"What if they send me to the pound and I get embroiled in the local gang war between the Pug Thugs and the Rottweiler Pilers?"

They stare glumly out of the rain-splattered window, tossing and turning following a negative experience at the dog walking park that day.

The study stated that dogs tend to fall asleep much faster following a negative day, presumably to escape from the terrible consequences of the day.

We still think of the horrendously awkward things we were doing in 2005, forever looking up at the blank ceiling searching for answers…

We've always suspected it, but now scientists have confirmed that dog owners are more likely to have better cardiovascular health.

The research was published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings and involved 1,769 people between 25 to 64-years-old, living in Brno in the Czech Republic.

Each participant had to provide information on their BMI, diet, physical activity levels, cholesterol, blood pressure, if they smoked or not and their fasting blood sugar levels.

42 percent of the candidates owned a pet of some sort, with 24 percent of people owning a dog and 17.9 percent owning another animal.

The American Heart Association heart score system test was used, looking at seven changeable risk factors of heart health.

Dog owners were more likely to exercise, have an ideal diet and blood glucose level than those who didn't, but they were more likely to smoke for some reason. They still scored better overall for cardiovascular health, however.

The study authors cautioned: "The higher smoking rates among dog ownership attenuates the association between dog ownership and cardiovascular health."

Existing evidence links dog ownership to better mental and physical health, so it makes total sense.

Study co-author Andrea Maugeri commented in a statement: "In general, people who owned any pet were more likely to report more physical activity, better diet and blood sugar at ideal level.

"The greatest benefits from having a pet were for those who owned a dog, independent of their age, sex and education level."

Research claims that getting a pooch could be a useful way to boost heart health, and an important way to tackle the prevalence of heart disease.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the US alone, causing one-in-four deaths each year according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Senior investigator Francisco Lopez-Jimenez stated that owning dogs has previously been linked to better mental health and feeling less lonely, both of which are assumed to decrease the risk of heart attacks.

One study published in the journal BMC Psychiatry, which examined 17 existing papers concluded having a pet could help the symptoms of mental illness.

Philippa Hobson, senior cardiac nurse for the British Heart Foundation, told Newsweek: "Whether you're a pet-owner or not, physical activity can benefit your heart in lots of different ways.

"Just spending 10 minutes a day walking around the block is good for your heart health," she added,

Who could ever deny that having a pup is good for us?

It's a deal breaker for many of us.

Imagine finding someone who is a ride and god craic and thinks the same about you…and then they meet your gorge dog/cat and don't like them.

Well, it was nice knowing ya!

It'll come as no surprise to hear that a significant amount of people would kick their bf/gf to the curb if they didn't like their pet.

According to a survey by Aldi, 2 out of 3 Irish people would end a relationship if their partner couldn’t accept their dog or cat.

And to that we say – fair.

There were other interesting findings in the survey too.

When it came to which animal was more popular, the figures showed that 72 percent of people surveyed had a dog, 19 percent had a cat and 9 percent had both a dog and a cat.

It also discovered that a whopping 96 percent of people regard their dog or cat as a member of their fam.

We so get that tbh.

Continuing the theme of having a close bond with their pet, a third of people let their dog or cat sleep on the bed each night.

It seems that people really adore their furry friends as 80 percent of people admitted to greeting their dog or cat first after a along day of school/work before any member of their family, partner or roommate.

So if you're not mad about bae's Border Collie then maybe keep your mouth shut because the pup is number one!

Meet my new baby

Most comments referred to how cute and adorable the mongrel is, with one writing, ''hello Fig your beautiful! You're going to get lots of love from the whole Beckham Family.''

Another said, ''you look like your dad on this pic! Gorgeous pup x.''

Although Brooklyn didn't say what breed his new pet was, most of his followers seem to think that he's a cocker spaniel.

His mum Victoria couldn't resist poking fun at her eldest's new dog when she took to Instagram stories.

Uploading a picture of their two dogs, Olive and newbie Fig, she tagged Brooklyn and wrote that he, ''has a new lady in his life.''

Posh and Brooklyn have recently graced the front cover of British Vogue alongside the rest of the gang – 16-year-old Romeo, 13-year-old Cruz and seven-year-old Harper.

Speaking to the publication about her marriage and family life, she said, ''it's all about the family unit. We are much stronger the six of us, than we would be if we were individuals. We respect that family bond and that is key.”

And now it looks like Fig is part of that family unit – we think he is just the cutest dog ever!

Hundreds of people joined a dog owner for his whippet’s final walk in Cornwall yesterday after an invitation to do so went viral.

Before putting his pet of 18 years to sleep, Mark Woods used social media to encourage people to share Walnut’s last visit to Porth Beach by launching the “WalkWithWalnut” hashtag.

18,000 people have liked Mark’s Facebook post which explains his decision to have Walnut euthanized because of his deteriorating health.

Hours after his final trip to the beach, Walnut passed away.  His owner and friend has since taken to Facebook to thank those who supported him both physically in Cornwall and virtually from around the world.

“Walnut passed away this morning at 11.56am.  The family and our three whippets, Monty, Nelson and Charlie were also in the room,” wrote Mark.  “He went very quickly and in my arms.”

“Thank you to the hundreds of people that attended the walk this morning and to all those that had their own walks with their beloved pets at 9.30am all around the world.”

Those following the movement online have used Twitter to document the impact Walnut’s story has had on them.

“If #walkwithwalnut has done something, it’s restored my faith in the compassion of humanity, in a particularly dreary year,” wrote one person.

“Did our #walkwithwalnut in the mizzly rain, weeping for his family & others who know that pain.  Fly high sweetie,” said another.

Speaking of the retired show dog, Luke told Local News that Tea can’t go anywhere without attracting attention.

“We always thought that she was far too pretty to keep at home,” he said.

“Even our weekend walks draw a crowd.  She pretends she doesn’t need the attention, but she definitely loves it, just like any supermodel.”

Since accidentally achieving viral fame, Tea has been approached by advertising companies and has taken up animal acting.

With hair like that, it would have been wrong not to!

The Saturdays singer Rochelle Humes took to Twitter with an emergency yesterday asking her followers for help.

“Parents – help!!”

Rochelle was looking for advice after her three-year-old daughter’s pet fish died overnight. She went on to ask her fans for their thoughts on the best course of action.

“Alaia’s goldfish has just passed. Do I tell her in the morning the truth (in a nice way) or is the fish on holiday?”

Quick to offer their words of wisdom, Rochelle needed help in deciding when a child is too young to learn about death.

“She’s only three, confused when is too young?!”

But it seems like honesty was the best policy for most as Rochelle retweeted many messages advising to tell her little girl the truth.

Rochelle later revealed that she and husband Martin decided to tell Alaia what had happened.

“We’ve gone for honesty. Thanks guys.

“Sometimes it’s hard to know the right thing to do when you just want to protest your little one.”

*Some users may find these images distressing*

A warning has now been issued to pet owners in the Cork area, after a family dog was attacked seemingly for no reason while he lay in his own back-garden.

In a heart-wrenching post on an animal charity's Facebook page, images of the injured pet were afterwards posted – prompting an outraged response from hundreds of people.

Shared via ArcAnimal Rescue Cobh – it read: "Word of caution to any dog owners in Cobh – it's a fright to God when you can't even keep your own family dog out in the back garden without him being abused.

"Our family dog who wouldn't hurt a fly has been minding his own business in the back garden when some lowlife poured some sort something over him which has been described by the vet as a sort of chemical.

"The holes in his back are from someone poking him with an iron through the fence.

"So everyone please keep an eye on your dogs and if you see any suspicious activity around a house please report to the Gardai! We are absolutely devastated that someone would do this to our dog."

In response, Peta Ireland has also offered up a €2,000 reward for information that leads to the discovery of the perpetrators of the vicious attack.

"It's imperative that any community faced with a cruel and callous act such as this take measures to find the culprit and bring him or her to justice," Peta's Elisa Allen said.

"Animal abusers are a danger to everyone – they take their issues out on whoever is available to them, human or non-human – and must be caught before they act again."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.
