Yearly Archives: 2018

Book lovers, rejoice! In honour of International Women’s Day one of our favourite independent bookshops- Books Upstairs- is offering customers free coffee and cake (or tea and a biscuit.) All you have to do is buy one very special book.

Independent and Young Adult publishers, Little Island Books shared the joyous news on Twitter. They revealed that if you buy a copy of Siobhan Parkinson’s latest book Rocking The System at Books Upstairs you’ll be treated to a free hot drink and a tasty treat.

“The gorgeous people at @BooksUpstairs are offering free coffee and cake to anyone who buys a copy of Rocking the System on International Women's Day! How amazing is that?!,” the publishers tweeted.

Siobhan’s book features 20 illustrated essays on Irish women, historical and contemporary, who have defied cultural norms, achieved great things and in some way rocked the system.

Inspiring historical figures featured in the book include Constance Markievicz and Sonia O’Sullivan.

This year’s International Women’s Day is extra special as 2018 marks 100 years since women in Ireland and the United Kingdom won the right to vote.

We’ll have to pop into Books Upstairs to purchase a copy of this wonderful book (and for tea and cake)

What a great way to spend International Women’s Day!

If you are a massive fan of Cards Against Humanity, then you are in for an absolute TREAT.

The rumour mill has been working overtime, and apparently we'll be getting a Disney version of the game soon.

I cannot even imagine how weird that will get, but I'm here for it.

Disney Cards Against Humanity Soon To Be Released card spread 1

A post on the game's Facebook page, which was very quickly deleted, showed off some of the Disney themed cards – so really, we're just waiting at this stage.

The graphic cards are basically here to RUIN your childhood, and the magic that goes with it.

Some of the violent card options include ‘Jane and Tarzan’s wild jungle sex adventures’, ‘vaginal burns from Lumiere’ and, perhaps the worst of all, ‘Bambi’s dead mother’.

May she rest in peace.

The game already has a Harry Potter version, so Disney does seem like a natural 'next-step'.

Just when you think you seen it all, from glitter tits to unicorn lashes…

Ladies, we have discovered a beauty trend that is probably going to be VERY popular for festivals this summer.

Jewelled eyebrows are starting to appear on social media, and we kind of love them?

The artists responsible for these bejewelled brows are the glitter geniuses at The Gypsy Shrine (the people behind glitter tits, FYI).

So basically, we don't all want to run around festivals with our tits and bums covered in sparkles, so The Gypsy Shrine came up with a slightly more wearable alternative.

And so, bejewelled eyebrows were born!

Jewel Brows Trend

Jenna Meek, who is the creative director of The Gypsy Shrine spoke with the gorgeous folks at Cosmopolitan about her latest creation:

"With The Gypsy Shrine HQ spending our days designing new jewels and covering our bodies head to toe in our products, we thought, where else can we put our jewels? Our brows! With the brow trend on fleek these days, we thought we had to impress and go bold."

To get the look, the artists position Mix 'N' Match jewels and use eyelash glue to secure them. Simples.

Will you give this look a go?

Public service announcement:

Cadbury has been forced to shut down chocolate production at it's Birmingham site due to on-going water issues.

The confectionery company confirmed that last week's extreme weather caused a pipe to burst at the factor, and have temporarily closed as a result.

But don't panic just yet, water services are reportedly working around the clock to fix the problem and hope to get the site back up and running as soon as possible.

A representative also assured the public that the supply of chocolate will not immediately be impacted – thank God.

"While we have no water supply to our manufacturing site in Bournville, our supply of chocolate is not immediately impacted as we currently have sufficient stock available to manage through this hopefully short disruption," they said.

In the meantime, it's probably wise to stock up on as many Dairy Milks as you can get your hands on – you know, just to be on the safe side.

Like it or not, the sad reality is that, when it's come to business and boardroom, it's still very much a man's world.

It's no exaggeration to say that women are statistically less likely to reach the top of the corporate ladder, and while more and more women are making waves in the corporate industry, there remains a distinct lack of representation in top positions.

In an effort to change the way we shop for goods and services, a female-led research group has created an app that allows consumers to see the number of women in leadership at the world's top brands and businesses.

Founded by journalist Iris Kuo and marketing leader Camille Ricketts, LedBetter Index, Database and Application aims to improve to give the public a closer look at which companies promote gender equality in leadership, allowing women to affect change with their buying power.

After receiving a grant from the International Women's Media Foundation Howard G. Buffet Fund, the app was formally launched in June 2016.

Exposing the gender ratio at the top 230 companies worldwide, LedBetter gives each business a score out of 100.

With an average female representation of just 20.9 per cent, the index highlights the need for greater equality on corporate boards across the globe.

Just nine companies managed to break the 40 per cent mark – a figure Iris describes as “disappointing”

Speaking to The Huffington Post, she said: “We were heartened to see there are companies out there that are close to approaching gender equality. It’s disappointing there aren’t more.”

While we still have a long way to go, LedBetter enables consumers to promote change and pave the way for the growth of women in business.

So, the snow is pretty much a distant memory, and we can all start getting excited about Summer.

The sun, the holidays, the cocktails… but most importantly – the CLOTHES.

No more heavy jumpers and rain jackets (well, almost), when the summer arrives we'll have a chance to wear dresses, sandals and all the good stuff.

However, as we all know, Summer in Ireland lasts approximately 6 days, so we can't justify spending a fortune on sun-friendly fashion.

Thankfully, we have Penneys, a genuine gift from God.

Anyway, they have given us a sneak preview of their High Summer 2018 collection, and it is FABULOUS.

Have a look, and let us know your thoughts:

So, whether you're living abroad or just know someone who is, you'll know how much we Irish love our home comforts.

From comforting cups of Barry's tea and buttery Tayto sandwiches, to Friday night pints and our self-deprecating banter, we there are some things that just can't be replicated when we're away from home.

And with St. Patrick's Day fast approaching, many Irish living abroad have been hit with a serious case of home sickness.

But not to worry – this year, The Paddy Box, a company that ships all our favourite treats to expats in Australia, Canada and USA, has added two special packages specially designed for those missing home during the festivities.

Jam-packed with Irish treats that represent these two national holidays and are sorely missed by those living away at the time of these occasions, both the 'Paddy's Day Box' and 'Easter Box' encapsulates our unique Irish culture and affection for local products.

From Paddy’s Day hats, Irish face paint, Irish flags, to Irish slang books and tea towels with Irish mammy quotes, the ‘Paddy’s Day Box’ has everything to allow Irish abroad feel like they are back at home on March 17th. The package also includes the Irish food essentials missed by everyone, such as Tayto crisps, Cadbury Dairy Milk, Barry’s Tea and Ballymaloe relish.

Chockfull of Irish chocolate, the 'Easter Box' includes two Cadbury medium Easter eggs, a Cadbury crème egg five pack, Cadbury mini egg pack, a Butlers Chocolate Bunny, Jacobs Elite Teacakes, Cadbury Purple Snacks 6 pack and more.

To celebrate the launch, The Paddy box conducted their own research on the likes, interests and cravings of Irish currently living abroad – and basically, we're all just one bug stereotype.

Unsurprisingly, Tayto Cheese and Onion crisps are the most missed food item of Irish living abroad, followed second by Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate, third by Barry's Tea, fourth by Ballymaloe Relish and fifth by McDonnell's Curry Sauce.

What's more, 85 per cent of respondents said they miss Ballymaloe Relish more than their in-laws.

When asked what they would do if they were flown to Ireland for one day only, 58 per cent said they would go to Penneys, 56 per cent said they would have a Tayto sandwich and a cup of Barry's Tea, 33 per cent would visit their grandparents, 74 per cent would spend time with their parents and 23 per cent would attend a GAA match.

Oh and the most missed dinner is ‘Mum’s Sunday Roast’ – obviously.

Through the website (www.thepaddybox.com) people can choose from a range of pre-packed, individually themed, 10 item boxes, or choose to make their own custom 10 item box, tailoring them specifically for someone they love. Boxes start from €49.95 and go up to €59.95. The Paddy Box team hand pack each gift box, input personal notes and ‘ship with Grá’ anywhere in the world.

That sweet, sweet Bank Holiday, lads.

Anyway, your beverage of choice this year will probably be hot cross bun flavoured gin… because its festive.

Yep, this new offering from Gin Tales at Not On The Highstreet might be just what you need for the Easter holidays.

The gin experts have created this delicious hot cross bun infusion of the juniper based drank, which matches perfectly with the usual tonic, ice and fruit.

Kim Kardashian is no stranger to weird and wacky beauty trends.

From non-surgical tummy tucks to vampire facials, the reality star has helped put many procedures on the map – but we're going to go out on a limb and say that this latest treatment is the most bizarre yet.

On Sunday, Kim shared a video with her Snapchat followers that showed her getting a 'firming and tightening' facial.

Now, on first thought this sounds like a luxury soothing spa treatment, but oh no, that could not be farther from the truth.

Complete with robotic-like headgear, that wouldn't look out of place in a futuristic science fiction film, the star documented the entire process from start to finish.

What started as a rejuvenating beauty treatment, ended with what looks like some sort of facial clamp and a lot of probing around the chin area.

We're not sure that we're entirely convinced by this one, but hey, if it's good enough for Kim…
