So, while we humans might like to think we're a sophisticated bunch with an extensive list of wants and desires, new research has shown that we're actually quite the opposite.

Sure, shiny new cars and expensive designer handbags might give us that temporary boost of happiness, however, when we look at the bigger picture, it's plenty of shut eye and an active sex life that brings us the most joy.

Developed by Oxford Economics and the National Centre for Social Research, the new happiness index has found sex and sleep have the biggest influence on a person's happiness and well-being.

For the study, 8,250 people were asked how satisfied they were with various aspects of their lives. Participants were then given a Living Well score based on their answers, averaging at around 62.2.

Interestingly, those who reported getting more sleep scored 15 points higher than those who struggled, while those with an active and fulfilling sex life scored seven points higher than those without.

What's more, researchers discovered that an increase in household income lifted scores by just two points.

Other factors which were deemed more important than money included living in a strong community, job security, and the health od close relatives.

So, it turns out our mothers were right all along – money really can't buy happiness.

Jacqueline Jossa was hit with a wave of backlash after viewers of the British Soap Awards believed she made a disrespectful comment.

Fans of the award show were stunned when the actress supposedly said: “Everything is always self-harm on that show,” or “They all self-harm on that show.”

The comment was made when three Hollyoaks actresses won an award for best storyline, which saw their three characters grapple with self-harm.

Many users said the Eastenders actress was a ‘sore loser’ and found her comment extremely unfair and disrespectful, however, Jacqueline has come forward and explained it was taken out of context.

The mum took to Instagram to explain herself, “Just to clear things up, Lacey asked me what the storyline was, as we couldn't hear. I answered with ‘I’m not actually sure. I think they all self-harmed on the show'.”

The actress went on to explain that she hasn’t watched Hollyoaks recently and was unsure of what exactly the storyline was: “I wasn’t discrediting, I was literally answering what the storyline was.”

“I know that self-harm isn’t a joke. I love any soap that tackles hard stories. It’s been taken out of context. Sorry for offence,” the soap star stated.

Jacqueline explained that her co-star Jake Wood's recent storyline also featured self-harm so she wasn’t disrespecting the topic.

Goodbye to the Branning sisters I will miss you Lauren Branning. Always.

It's been less than a month since Ariana Grande confirmed that she and ex-boyfriend Mac Miller had ended their relationship, and just three days since she and Pete Davison sparked rumours of a potential romance with sweet snaps of their Harry Potter-themed date night, but it looks like things are heating up quite quickly as the 24-year-old's new beau has already shown his dedication to the star with not one, but two tattoos.

In an Instagram posted yesterday, the Saturday Night Live star showed off his new ink that referenced his new girlfriend.

We had a good night.

The first, Ariana's signature bunny ears mask sits just below his left ear, while the second simply features the letters A and G tattooed onto his thumb.

Neither Ariana nor Peter shared the pictures on their own accounts, instead they were uploaded by Southern California tattoo artist London Reese.

The couple have not yet commented on the pictures, and it's not yet known if Ariana returned the sentiment.

It comes after both stars parted ways with their long-term partners, with Pete's ex, Cazzie Davis responding to his new romance in an Instagram posted on Friday.

"Been in Africa, what's I miss??," she wrote.

Whilst craft beer, tequila and mezcal are having a moment, gin continues to be the perpetual tipple of choice for post-work drinkers and weekend party-goers.

This summer, as we flock to enjoy the sun in our gardens and favourite rooftop bars, gin will dominate for another season. However, we wanted to find out how you can stay ahead of the curve when enjoying your favourite tipple in the weeks ahead. It’s hard work, but someone has to do it.

We spoke to Gareth Irvine, the founder of Copeland Spirits, a Co. Down based company that produces a range of flavoured gins celebrating fruits and herbs all grown right here in Ireland. He has shared his insight into the cool and the not-so-cool of gin for summer 2018.

1. Keep it country

Irvine says, “Provenance has always been a huge part of the gin trend with consumers connecting to a brand because it champions local grains or botanicals – this hasn’t changed but is has developed some. This summer rather than sampling premium craft gins from across the world, consumers are homing in on gins from their local communities.

“In the case of Ireland, all of our most-popular gins are produced using indigenous ingredients giving the unique flavour profile and artisan quality  gin-lovers have come to expect from an Irish gin. Each gin in the Copeland range is infused with fruits which are grown locally, creating flavour combinations that surprise and excite and a totally unique tasting experience.”

2. So fresh and so clean

Irvine reminds us that as the seasons change, drinking occasions change too.

He says, “The better weather sees us enjoying a few during the day or after work, maybe at a BBQ or in our favourite outdoor hotspot. We can find heavy or strong cocktails don’t refresh us in the sun and we’re more likely to crave light and refreshing serves.

“Allowing your gin to be the focus of your serve by pairing with a classic tonic water over ice is ideal in summer. Choosing light garnishes like mint or raspberries will add that flavour kick but still keep the palate fresh, perfect for pairing with typical picnic or BBQ foods.

“Alternatively, flavoured or infused gins are an ideal base for creating new summer serves but do your homework. Most flavoured gins are actually liqueurs and can be quite rich and sweet, with the gin flavour masked. However, there are flavoured gins that come in at 37.8% or so, such as our range. These are perfect for mixing and can withstand a pairing with other spirits and garnishes.

“My favourite summer serve is our take on the classic Tom Collins, the Copeland Collins. Simply pour a serving of our Rhuberry Gin into a highball glass, add a generous dash of freshly squeezed lemon juice and two tablespoons of caster sugar, stirring gently. Fill the glass with fresh ice, top up with soda water and garnish with a wedge of fresh lemon.”

3. You’ve been served!

“Wimbledon will be a key event this summer! The event has always had a strong association to fruity, fizzy drinks like Pimms but this year, gin will come to the forefront as part of the trend too. Pimms and gin work really well together and this combo is ideal for sharing pitchers and exploring new fruit garnishes.

“Simply take the classic Pimms No.1 cup and pour into a large jug, add your favourite gin along with oranges, cucumber and mint.”

4. Eco-warriors unite

We’re thinking first and drinking second. Irvine says, “Summer is a time when we appreciate the world around us that little bit more. What we’ve noticed in the last couple weeks is that cocktail menus are changing as bars find ways to appreciate produce and minimise food waste.

“Some garnishes produce a lot more waste that we realise – there’s lemon rind, egg yolk, orange peel and more that can end up in the bin. Rather than sweeping them into to the bin, some spear-heading bars have been making sure all waste is used in a trend called ‘closed-loop’ cocktails.

“Excess fruit might be used to create a natural syrup or saved for the pitcher style Pimms and Gin. We’re really conscious about our eco-footprint at Copeland, given we rely so much on the land to produce our infused gins so development is music to our ears.”

5. Just chilling!

Gin over ice is a yes, but gin in ice is a no. Irvine explains, “in summer the temptation to enjoy a slushed, ice-based drink can sometimes be unavoidable, and yes gin does feature on the frozen cocktail menu regularly. Our advice to gin-lovers entertaining at home is to chill your glass in the fridge before you use it. Fill your glass with totally frozen, good-quality ice all the way – it will melt more slowly as a result meaning your drink will stay cooler, fizzier and enjoyable for longer.

“Typically, Ireland’s talented bar-folk know how to serve up a great gin but if your glass could fit more ice, then absolutely ask so you can chill out exactly how you intended without having to sip over a melted mess.”

Copeland Spirits Rhuberry Flavoured Gin is available at Aldi across the country and is priced at €29.99. For serving suggestions visit copelandspirits.com

Always drink responsibly.

It's been 22 years since the cult series aired its final episode, but now Father Ted is back and better than ever!

The show's creator, Graham Linehan, announced yesterday that he is working on a Father Ted musical with the help of the series' co-writer Arthur Mathews and musician Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy.

He also revealed that the stage show, called Pope Ted – The Father Ted Musical, would follow Ted as he leaves Craggy Island to take up his new role as Pope.

He told the BBC yesterday: "It's like putting on an old pair of slippers. I didn't want to do anything like this until the right idea came along, and when Trump won and Corbyn won, I kind of thought: 'Maybe Ted has a chance.'"

"Obviously we're pulling some shenanigans to get him into that position but I think the shenanigans are entertaining enough that people won't mind."

Linehan kept tight lipped about who would take on the legendary leading role, and refused to confirm whether any old stars would be making an appearance.

However, he did say that the production would definitely be coming to Dublin.

It is not yet known where the musical will debut, but it is expected to be stage-ready sometime next year.

The best piece of fashion advice that Millie Mackintosh ever got was from her grandmother.

“My grandmothers used to say flaunt what you’ve got. When I was a teenager I had really bad acne and I didn't feel very good about it. She would give me a really short mini-skirt and would say to go out there and flaunt your legs cause that’s one of your best features," she tells SHEmazing.

"If you’re not feeling to good about one thing just forget about and focus on something that you do feel good about.

"She's such a glamorous lady, I posted this picture of her Instagram wearing this faux fur coat I did in one of my collections it got about 20,000 like. She’s always got these amazing retro sunglasses she really is fantastic."

The former Made in Chelsea star and fashion icon is as every bit stunning in the flesh as she is on her 1.3 million follower-strong Instagram. Dublin, she says, is one of her favourite cities.

“It feels quite familiar now, I don’t quite know my way around yet. I must have been about 10 times now. I always feel really happen when I land in Dublin. I always seem to end up in Roberta's for cocktails."

Always a pleasure staying with you @themarkerhotel! Will be back soon I hope

As well as sampling the chicest watering holes around capital, Millie adores Irish street style.

“I love Irish style I think you’ve got great designers. What I really appreciate about the Irish girl is that she really loves to dress up and loves to get a new outfit for every event. I feel like there’s a lot of thought that goes into the outfits and I love that because I love to dress up as well."

But how can us Irish girls get the Chelsea look? Don't worry it can be done, and Millie's got the inside scoop on how to dress like an Insta-star this summer.

“I’m really loving summer tailoring and summer suits. I wore a really fun yellow one which was High Street recently. You can dress them up or down or wear them as separates.

"Or you could wear the top and the trousers with a tank top for a sports lux look. You can also wear just a bra and heel when you’re all done up for a more sexy look."

Not a suits fan? The classic summer dress is always in style.

“A summer dress is a staple and will see you through lots of events. Go for one that you can wear with different shoes- like espadrilles during the day and maybe a red statement heel for the evening.

"You can throw a denim jacket over it or not jacket if it’s a nice evening. Something you can wear from office to evening."

Engaged to fellow MIC cast member Hugo Taylor, she's got a big style event coming up this summer- her wedding.

“I’m very excited. Last weekend I had my hen party which my best friend organised so that was a really good send off. It’s later this summer but there’s still bits that I’ve left to do but I’m really chill about it.

“I don’t want to be stressed out because I think you’ve got to enjoy it all and enjoy every moment."

One thing she's definitely not going to get stressed about is skincare. When it comes to summer beauty Millie is all about keeping it light and fresh.

“I like letting the skin breathe and I love wearing a tinted moisturiser and I’m really loving Lancôme Skin Feels Good. It’s got SPF and pollution protection which is really good for when you live in a city. It gives a nice coverage but it still looks like your skin. I’m all about that summery quite fresh make-up which looks quite subtle yet glowy and healthy.

“It’s about keeping your skin hydrated in the heat, you don’t want it to be too shiny but you don’t want it to be dried out from the sun either."

Known for her devotion to exercise and healthy eating- she was even featured on the cover of Women's Health. However she's no stranger to a cheeky treat, the new Magnum Praliné in particular.

“I love food. My family’s confectionery history is sweets and toffee, chocolate. I am into healthy eating and exercise but I do love a treat as well. I love Praline. The new Magnum Praliné flavour that I’m here to launch is a favourite of mine."

In love with the Amore collection from @virginiamacari

The face of Magnum's Pleasure Seeking series, Millie has managed to combine fashion with one of the yummiest ice-creams of the summer.

"I’m a big believer in pursuing your pleasure and style has always been that for me," she says. "The Magnum ethos of ‘a day without pleasure is a day lost’ really resonates with me.

"I am always pushing myself to embrace and enjoy everyday."

Men can be great, fab even – but sometimes we just get plain tired of some of their company.

It seems that even icons like Rihanna are not immune to masculine fatigue, as a source told MediaTakeOut News that the singer dumped her billionaire boyfriend Hassan Jameel for that very reason.

The source told the magazine that Riri is allegedly single again:

'Rihanna and him were together for a while," the source said.

"It was a good relationship, but now it's over. Of course Rihanna broke his heart. That's what she does: break men's hearts."

'Rihanna just got tired of him. She gets tired of men sometimes," the source claimed.

Rihanna and Jameel have kept their relationship very private throughout their courtship.

If the break up rumours are true, we wish both of them the best.

Doughnuts and burgers are both a delight to behold separately, so why not combine the two?

We're sure this must have been the logical thinking at Holy Smoke down in Cork, as the south-west eatery has created the ultimate frankenfood.

A post shared by Holy Smoke (@holysmokecork) on

The doughnut burger includes two juicy beef patties, double layers of cheese, and two layers of bacon, all sandwiched between two doughnut buns.

The new taste sensation is one of the most highly recommended foodie experiences in the rebel county, so next time we're down there we'll definitely have to give it a try.

The revolutionary combination is exactly the kind of thing that a hangover brunch needs.

The BBQ restaurant is getting a lot of attention for the doughnut burger, so we're certain the queues will be out the door for this cheat-day creation.

After all, the weekends are for indulging.

Well-wishers who were swept away by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's love story sent on a myriad of gifts to celebrate their wedding.

However, surprisingly enough, the royal newlyweds reportedly will not be enjoying these presents (also, you have to wonder how many blenders they got – €8 million worth?).

Nope, royal protocol holds that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex can't accept gifts for commercial purposes, or from well-meaning people who don't know them.

According to the Independent, gifting guidelines laid down for guests before the ceremony read:

"It should be noted that gifts cannot be brought to St George’s Chapel or the Reception that follows at Windsor Castle. Guests are advised to seek further guidance on delivery arrangements for any gifts to Kensington Palace."

Instead of gifts, the newlyweds' public wedding registry asked that people donate to charities.

The gesture is not only sweet, but also reflects just how devoted to charity work both Harry and Meghan are.

And as far as protocol for gift-giving from the public, another statement from the palace further explains how the process works:

"When gifts are accepted, the consent of the Member of the Royal Family should be contingent upon the enterprise undertaking not to exploit the gift for commercial purposes.

"Gifts offered by private individuals living in the UK not personally known to the Member of the Royal Family should be refused where there are concerns about the propriety or motives of the donor or the gift itself."

However, there are a few extra special gifts they won't have to return, namely a pair of adorable koalas called Meghan and Harry that will live at the Taronga Zoo!

Sure, the koalas will be happier there – though we do love the mental image of adorable marsupials hanging around Kensington Palace!

We've probably all been there in our lowest moment, thinking 'I can't wear that until I've lost five pounds,' or 'I can't go on that holiday, I'll look awful in a bikini compared to everyone else.'

These are horrible, harsh thoughts we all inflict on ourselves when we're feeling negative about our bodies, but a new Instagram is here to prove that every body slays in a bikini.

The Insta account Fat Girls Traveling is shaking up our thinking and reminding us that there is no reason our bodily perceptions should hold us back.

In a time where travel bloggers enthral us with their shots of perfect scenery, covetable Airbnb listings and long, tanned and most often thin limbs, this account showcases a less represented body type.

You know the exact type of travel accounts we're thinking of, tonnes of turquoise blue water, Triangle bikinis and laxative tea endorsements.

While both big and small women alike deserve to be proud of their bodies, this account focuses on travel bloggers with major curves.

'My goal with creating Fat Girls Traveling was to build a safe and inclusive community, as well as help take the stigma out of the word fat,' creator Annette Richmond said on her blog.

'Fat does not mean ugly. Fat does not mean lazy. Fat does not mean unhealthy.'

The grid is littered with gorgeous women of all different sizes sizzling on their summer holidays, with no hang ups about their figures.

The page has one goal – to empower women by showing them the beauty of other women like them.

And with a following steadily creeping upwards in the thousands, it's working.

The business mogul's line of products is constantly growing, with highlighter palettes, tan and brushes.

Her products are available online, in pharmacies and from Penneys stores, but for the first time, every single one of her makeup and beauty bits will be available from the one place.

Taking to Instagram, Sue announced:

'I’m SO excited to announce that we are opening our very first POP-UP SHOP Thursday June 7th at 9am in Liffey Valley S/C.'

'We will be setting up camp for the summer and we can’t wait to meet some of you beauty shopaholics.'
