Yearly Archives: 2018

If you planning a trip to Paris this summer, you are a very lucky person.

Truth is, Paris is a good idea any season of the year, but the summer is a particularly nice time to discover or rediscover the City of Light, as most people are on holidays and the streets are basically empty. Be careful though, some places actually close down for two to three weeks in August.

While travelling to Paris doesn't come cheap, there is so much you can do in the city for free, such as museums, walks or just people watching sitting on a beautiful Parisian bench.

When it comes to food, Paris is famous for its Michelin star restaurants but there are also plenty of ways to eat cheaply and still having an absolute feast. Here are our favourite picks under a tenner.

1. A pitta sandwich from L'As du Fallafel

Located in the hip district of Le Marais, this institution has been making the best fallafels since 1979.

L'As du Fallafel, 34 rue des Rosiers, 75004 Paris

2. A beef bourguignon in Bouillon Pigalle

This new restaurant offers delicious traditional French dishes (snails, patés, profiteroles…) served in a casual and friendly atmosphere. Try and go early (12pm for lunch, 7pm for dinner) as this place is very popular among Parisians at the moment.

Bouillon Pigalle, 22 boulevard de Clichy, 75018 Paris

3. A Margherita pizza in Pizzeria Popolare

This trendy eatery offers a wide variety of pizzas and other mouth-watering delicacies, including a traditional margherita for no more than 5 euros.

4. A Kurdish sandwich in Urfa Dürüm

In the busy rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis which boasts numerous cool bars and restaurant, Urfa Dürüm wouldn't necessarily look like the place to be but don't be fooled. This small eatery makes some incredible sandwiches and pizzas for a fraction of a tenner.

Urfa Dürüm, 56 rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis, 75010 Paris

5. A bo bun in Pho 19

This satisfying Vietnamese dish made of rice noodles, raw crunchy vegetables and spring rolls is so flavourful you might become addicted.

Pho 19, 102-104 Rue de Meaux, 75019 Paris

6. A loaded sandwich from Alain Miam Miam

You might have to wait a while as Alain takes his time to make each sandwich but it is all worth it. When you are finally served, cross the street and go each your sandwich in the Square du Temple, an adorable little park.

7. Fresh viennoiseries from Du pain et des idées

Croissants, pains au chocolat, escargots… It will be so hard to choose what to get you may as well get one of each.

8. A crêpe from Breizh Café

Whether you decide to go sweet or savoury, the traditional crêpes and galettes served in this café are as good as they would be in Brittany.

Kylie Jenner graced the cover of Forbed this week, for their issue on America's female billionaires.

Described as the youngest self-made billionaire in history, it's the cool $900 million she has made from her company Kylie Cosmetics that earned her the recognition of Forbes.

However, some fans simply can't live in a world where Kylie Jenner is not yet a billionaire.

A post shared by thefatjewish (@thefatjewish) on

Comedy page The Fat Jewish posted to their 10.5 million followers proclaiming that Kylie Jenner had to become a billionaire ASAP.

The page shared a GoFund Me aiming to raise a million dollars to donate to the youngest Kardashian-Jenner.

'Kylie Jenner was on the cover of Forbes Magazine today for having a net worth of 900 million dollars, which is heartbreaking,' reads the description.

A post shared by Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

'I don't want to live in a world where Kylie Jenner doesn't have a billion dollars.'

'WE MUST RAISE 100 MILLION DOLLARS TO HELP HER GET TO A BILLION, PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD, THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.'

The GoFund Me is obviously a parody, but it has already raised over €2,000.

People are none too impressed with the premise of the fundraiser, with some expressing that they wished the money raised could go to charity.

Thai boys that were rescued from a flooded cave could be out of hospital by next week, according to officials.

Twelve boys and their football coach were saved from a Tham Luna cave after it filled with water and trapped the football team for 17 days underground.

The Health Minister, Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, announced to reporters that the boys were expected to be discharged on Thursday, July 19.

"We need to prepare both the children and their families for the attention they will receive when they come out," he said.

The schoolboys are reportedly in good health and show no signs of stress, despite losing an average of 2kg (4.4lb) during the 17 days, said a senior health official.

The team of divers and volunteers who successfully save the boys came from across the globe, including the United States, Japan, Finland, and Laos, reports the Metro.co.uk.

At a press conference, Governor Narongsak addressed the team's ordeal:

'The children are neither heroes nor villains. They’re simply kids having an accident.'

‘Now that they’re known to millions of people, I believe they would contribute to the betterment of society in the future."

The Metro.co.uk reports that a father of 13-year-old Duangpetch Promthep, Banphot Konkum, said the team didn't realise the rain had begun to fall when they entered the cave on June 23.

"After an hour when they wanted to leave, the water level was rising. They ran further inside the cave to escape from the water. The water flow was strong.’ In their search for a safe haven, the boys were reported to have used their hands to feel the walls for an opening to take them to a higher, safer spot."

"Searchers later found what they thought were the boys’ handprints, giving them confidence the boys were alive and that the searchers were on the right path," explained Mr Banphot.

"They, all 13 of them, saw a small passage or a crawl space, so they all dug the hole to get through to another spot, until they found Nen Nom Sao.’

'The teammates climbed higher, using their hands to feel the walls for a crawl space that would lead to safer, higher ground."

"Those handprints were among the first signs of where the boys were, what they had done to escape the floods, and what dangers rescuers would face in their mission to save the boys and their coach," the dad added.

The talented star dons an impressive wig, impeccable accent and prepares to clash with fellow Oscar alum Margo Robbie (a surprising cast choice for the role of Queen Elizabeth I) as she heads to battle as Mary, Queen of Scots.

The anticipated film was written by House of Cards' Beau Williamson and based on the biography by John Guy, it revolves around the rebellious and charismatic Mary who chose to fight for her native thrown instead of being Queen of France at just 16.

But when Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty, betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones – and change history.

Watch the trailer below:

Historical liberties were taken with this one, but this is going to be some showdown, helmed by two incredible actresses at the top of their game.

We can't wait.

My name is Aoife and I'm possibly addicted to Love Island.

Look, I started the summer as a total Love Island virgin, only tuning into episode one of Series Four because my younger sister was and I wanted to know what all the fuss was about.

While the first few weeks were quite boring, I did get caught up in the drama of Adam ''I'd be lying if I didn't say she was attractive'' Collard, Rosie's now-iconic ''walk'', Megan being Megan, Jack and Dani's romance/fauxmance (still not sure on that one) and of course, Dr Alex's attempted flirty banter that I'm sure we all cringed through together.

But when my sister and I properly ugly-cried during last night's show, you might think it's because we're just too invested in this reality TV bullsh*t.

Which I assure you, we are.

However, it was for a different reason that the episode was particularly heart-wrenching.

Samira Mighty, one of the OG's, finally had had enough so she packed her bags and left the villa, water bottle in hand, head held high.

Up until now, I wouldn't have said I was her No 1 fan even though I felt so sorry for the way her villa experience was going.

She was stuck in a ''friendship couple'' with Alex off the bat, she always seem to strike out when it came to any new boys coming in, plus her relationship with Frankie didn't seem genuine because he'd originally admitted that Megan was his first choice.

Like, FFS.

So, when she announced to the rest of the Islanders that she was quitting the show, I was properly shocked that the whole f*cking Island fell to absolute pieces.

The girls were inconsolable, the lads weren't much better and Sam herself couldn't get through a sentence without bawling. I dare you to watch the Alex and Samira chat on the roof and not to get all the feels.

Basically, in the most airtime Samira had gotten over the past five weeks, it quickly became glaringly obvious – that she was the beating heart of the villa.

So, eh, why didn't we see that?

I know the producers want to air scenes that have the most drama but scenes showing the development of actual friendships is what made the other years of Love Island fun and relatable. And there's been a serious lack of that this year.

I've seen more of Megan's arse and Georgia's rants about her loyalty than I have of, say, Laura and Sam having a laugh/chat/interaction.

Aw poor Samira, she waited so long to find someone. #LoveIsland

A post shared by Love Island (@loveisland) on

So as I was scrolling through Twitter last night, bleary-eyed with emotion, I was hit by another blow.

Samira and Frankie – who I literally had no time for and thought they were a load of sh*te – had been voted into the Hideaway one night and IT.WAS.NEVER.SHOWN.

Like, why? Why did we see Josh and Kaz, Megan and Eyal, etc etc and not them?

They never got a fair shot for the public to get to know them as a couple and maybe have a chance to be kept in. People can't root for you if they don't know you.

My point is that I understand why the more ''boring couples'' i.e Ellie and Charlie are sidelined a bit, but the editing of the show has essentially robbed Samira, who we all know had a tough time pre-Frankie, of her time on Love Island.

It seems I'm not the only one to be raging at this shoddy editing because Twitter are unleashing their fury too.

One wrote, ''Samira leaving love island & England losing the world cup just proves trump coming here tomorrow is ruining the little good this country had left don’t @ me'' and ''Megan went into the hideaway twice and it was aired. Samira went in with the only guy she had a connection with, but no show. Disgusting bias from Love island bosses.''

Hear hear. Poor Sam suffered a grave injustice and I just can't even with it all.

We've all seem the memes about Megan and her alleged penchant for going under the aesthetician's needle.

Fans of the reality TV star's look have been clamouring to know exactly who she went to to and what she had done, and the Kiss Aesthetic Clinic, which have eight locations, have owned up.

The clinic took to Instagram today to tell their 109k followers that they were responsible for enhancing Megan's good looks.

'For those asking – yes Meg is our client and did come and see us before she entered the villa for her treatments,' reads the caption.

'She had the Kylie package and a small lip augmentation.'

The package is one of the most popular at the clinic, and is based off achieving a facial look inspired by Kylie Jenner.

The treatment involves using fillers in the cheeks, jaw and chin, and costs up to €925.00.

'The leading combination treatment amongst the A listers. Used to contour and elongate the face by highlighting the cheekbones, defining the jawline and chin,' says Kiss Aesthetics.

'The lift in the upper face can also result in significant softening in nose-mouth lines plus a reduction in the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. This package is worth its weight in gold.'

Another post on their page about the Kylie package reads: 'These treatments alone/combined help give the illusion of a slimmer, contoured, elongated face. They work by enhancing your facial structure and natural features.'

The clinic came under fire for revealing Megan as their client, with some commenters claiming that it was a breach of patient confidentiality.

However, the clinic responded to let their followers know that Megan has signed a contract with Kiss Aesthetics to promote their work.

The clinic has also treated stars like Chloe Ferry and Sophie Kasaei.

With the entire country obsessed with Megan's looks, Kiss Aesthetics will certainly be doing more business than usual after this reveal.

Hollywood history has just been made.

Sandra Oh is the first Asian actress to earn an Emmy nomination for Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

And we are chuffed for her, to say the least.

Oh is nominated for her role as agent Eve Polastri in BBC America’s spy drama, Killing Eve.

Nominations for the 70th annual Emmy Awards were announced on Thursday, July 12th.

Along with Oh, the lead actress category includes Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Claire Foy (The Crown), Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld), Keri Russell (The Americans), and Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black).

However, this is not Sandra's first Emmy nod. She has racked up a fab five Emmy nominations as Best Supporting Actress for her role as Cristina Yang in Grey’s Anatomy.

Sandra has spoken in the past about how important representation is on television.

She gave an interview to Elle magazine where she discussed how this is such a pivotal time in Hollywood right now.

A post shared by Sandra Oh (@iamsandraohinsta) on

''I realised how deep the internalization was. I’ve done a lot of work, I’ve worked consistently; and in that moment, 30 years into working this industry, it really rocked me.”

“That is how challenging it is: It’s not just, ‘I can’t get a audition,’ because that’s true, but it’s also internal. That’s still the dragon that I am trying to mount and ride,'' she added.

Social media was understandably excited for Sandra, with one user tweeting, ''Sandra Oh is a hero who created the legendary Cristina Yang. After Grey’s Anatomy she didn't’t receive any decent offers for four years. She’s never won an Emmy. No Asian actress has. She’s deserves it.''

Let's hope that Sandra takes home the gong at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards, which are taking place on September 17th.
