Yearly Archives: 2018

We love Strictly for a lot of things – the glitz and glam, the fabulously choreographed dances, the brilliant judges…

And now we have another reason.

The BBC show has just announced that it is going to make a bigger effort to protect the environment.

Yaaasss!

While we all adore the lashings of glitter that Strictly heaps on us every year, they have now confirmed that the glitz being used on the contestants and their outfits for the upcoming series will be environmentally friendly.

This comes after the ban that has been put on plastic microbeads by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Defra have also explained that all liquid glitter used during the show is eco-friendly, and that no marine life will be under threat after it is flushed down the drain.

They stated that, ''all our liquid glitter used in the theme weeks is sourced from Burt’s Bees which is all biodegradable, and this series they will also be supplying us with biodegradable wipes.''

In addition to this, the make-up they use is also biodegradable, however the show is looking into whether all of the ingredients in it are biodegradable.

Fair play, Strictly.

Strictly Come Dancing is most definitely on a mission to become more eco-friendly, as it's attempting to get rid of single-use plastic too.

A spokesperson for the show has said how it should be at least 90 percent free of single-use plastic by next year, which is amazing tbh.

As for the confetti that we love seeing swirling around our shimmering dancers and celebs on the TV?

It's 50 percent biodegradable – plus last year, the paper that the scripts and running orders were printed on were replaced with iPads instead.

Strictly, if you weren't one of our favourite shows before, you certainly are now.

We all love a good takeaway, but we are also very aware that this isn't always the best option for our wallets or our waistlines (except on Treat Yo'self Thursdays, obvs).

With his book Fakeaway, Chef Adrian helps us enjoy our favourite takeaway dishes without the guilt.

Among our favourite options are some tasty chicken wings… If you never thought you could make chicken wings at home yourself, think again.

Try this delicious recipe and you'll see that the tasty treat can be made affordably and oh so healthily.

BUFFALO CHICKEN WINGS WITH A SMOKED GARLIC AND CHIVE DIP

"A classic wing from the United States. It is normally deep fried and coated in a vinegary, buttery, spicy sauce, but for a healthier version I bake these in the oven. This version has the addition of bourbon to the sauce, which adds an incredible musty flavour. Don’t worry, the alcohol burns off in the cooking."

Serves 4

For the wings

  • 24 chicken wings
  • 2 pinches of sea salt
  • 5 sprigs of fresh thyme
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 bottle (354 ml) of hot sauce (I prefer Frank’s)
  • 100ml white wine vinegar
  • 100ml bourbon
  • 100g butter
  • a handful of sesame seeds
  • 1 red chilli, sliced
  • 4 spring onions, sliced

For the garlic and chive dip

  • 4–5 chives
  • 2 cloves of smoked garlic
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise

1. First make the garlic and chive dip. Slice the chives thinly and finely chop or crush the garlic. Mix the chives and garlic into the mayonnaise in a small bowl and set aside until needed.

2. Preheat the oven to 200ºC/400ºF/gas mark 6.

3. Season the chicken wings with the salt and thyme leaves. Now sprinkle the wings with the oil. Give them a good mix with clean hands and place on a baking tray. Roast for 25 minutes.

4. While the wings are cooking, make the sauce. Place the whole bottle of hot sauce in a wide saucepan. Add the white wine vinegar, bourbon and butter and then allow to simmer until the sauce becomes sticky and reduces to a nice syrup consistency.

5. After 25 minutes remove the wings from the oven and dunk them into the sauce. Return them to the oven for another 5 minutes and then dunk them again to get them extra sticky. Place them into the oven for a further 5 minutes and then they are ready. Spoon them into a dish, place the dip on one side, sprinkle with the sesame seeds, chilli and spring onions and tuck in.

Calling all 00s teens!

One of the biggest boy bands of the decade have just revealed that they have a brand new album on the way.

Busted, of Year 3000 fame, are making a 2018 comeback with the launch of their new album.

The trio took to Twitter to post a recent snap of themselves lounging on some stairs (very boyband) with the caption:

'Did somebody say… new album?'

A post shared by Busted (@busted) on

The lads haven't given us a taster yet of what kind of sound their new album will provide, but they previously told This Morning that is will be similar to their signature sound.

'We just finished our fourth album, I just had the final master back on Friday, it's brilliant.'

'It's a return to form for Busted, we sat down and wrote it together and if you're a Busted fan you're going to love it because it's very much a Busted style album.'

Is it time to get our studded belts and kohl eyeliner back out?

It has been confirmed that Holly Willoughby will co-host the upcoming season of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here.

The This Morning presenter replaces Ant McPartlin who has stepped away from the spotlight due to personal issues.

A post shared by Holly Willoughby (@hollywilloughby) on

Speaking of her new role, Holly told The Mirror: “I couldn’t be more excited to have been asked to stand alongside Dec for the next jungle adventure.”

Holly has been friends with both Ant and Dec for many years, with the presenters making their break in the entertainment industry around the same time.

The presenter sent her well wishes to Ant who is currently dealing with alcohol and personal issues.

"I love Ant and want to send him my best wishes and support for a continued recovery. These are big shoes, not to fill, but just to keep warm for a little bit,” she said.

The host gushed about the reality show, admitting that she is a huge fan. “I feel like I’ve won a competition to go and hang out on my favourite show! When is it a good time to tell Dec I’m scared of everything that moves."

Holly’s co-host Declan Donnelly said: “I am hugely grateful to Holly for agreeing to accompany me to Australia this year. She was at the top of my list and I’m thrilled she said yes. It will be a different kind of series but we will try our best to ensure it is no less fun and eventful for our loyal viewers.”

We cannot wait to see Holly present the show alongside Declan Donnelly. There’s no doubt she’ll do a stellar job.

Got a massive college exam or work presentation coming up?

Or maybe you just want to stay sharp into your golden years.

Doing more than studying on your bed can apparently help keep your brain in tip top condition, according to science.

Researchers at Oxford and Coventry Universities studied 73 people who filled in questionnaires on how regularly they had sex over the space of a year, according to The Sun.

The participants, aged between 50 and 83, then endured a series of tests involving vocabulary and spacial awareness.

Those who had sex on the regular performed on a higher basis than those with a less-than-thriving sex life, researchers said.

However, sexual regularity made no difference to attention or memory, according to researchers.

So, if you have a healthy sex life, make sure you keep it going into your later years.

It was the wedding of the year.

An estimated 1.9 billion people tuned in to watch Prince Harry and Meghan Markle say I do, at the breathtaking St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle.

Meghan Markle stunned in a Clare Waight Keller Givenchy gown.

To our delight, the British designer's creation will be on display to the public from October 26 to January 6, 2019.

This special exhibition will form part of the Windsor Castle tour.

A Royal Wedding: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will also include Harry's attire from the special day in May 2018.

The Duke of Sussex's wedding outfit was the frockcoat uniform of the Household Cavalry (the 'Blues and Royals'), made by tailors at Dege & Skinner on Savile Row.

The uniform is still being worn by Harry, so for the exhibition an identical copy has been made.

We can only imagine how spectacular the pieces are, up close and personal. Trip to London anyone?

In a new venture for one of our favourite hgh street fashion brands, River Island has today announced that they are releasing a home interiors collection.

The collection is divided into a further three homeware collections with varying themes – focusing on the top three home interiors trends of the year.

The first is Baby Doll, which will add a subtle hint of grown-up Barbie Dream House to a space.

The line combines leopard print textures with streamlined metallic accents – creating a super playful vibe.

The collection infuses luxury touches with kitch prints, and will seriously spruce up a basic space in seconds.

The second collection is sumptuous to say the least.

Dubbed Electric Opulance, the collection is big and bold.

Along with bright zings of colour like teal, pink and mustard, it utilises Moroccan stylings to create detailed pieces.

We're a big fan of the Mongolian style fur cushions, as well as the beaded fuzzy pouffe.

The collection is super quirky, while maintaining an air of luxuriousness – who doesn't want to sink into bed surrounded by thick paisley throws and fluffy fur cushions?

The final collection is sleek and modern – and oh so Instagram,-worthy.

Called New Nordic, geometric angles teamed beautifully with precious stones and neutrals make for a too-cool-for-school look.

Touches of gold keep it looking regal while maintaining a minimalist vibe.

The collections all land in September, with prices for every budged, varying from €10.00 and €370.00, with some items like candles and room diffusers being available for as little as €6.00.

Our apartments are about to llok a heck of a lot cuter.

Unless you've been living under a leopard print rock somewhere, you may have noticed that the iconic animal print has made arguably it's biggest comeback for the autumnal season.

Eternally on top of the trend, Penneys introduced a slick leopard print co-ord –  and the influencers of Ireland took note.

For the past week, Instagram has been awash with the co-ord, with top online personalities like Louise Cooney, Dominique Nugent and Tara Steward rocking the set partially or in full.

A post shared by Louise Cooney (@louisecooney_) on

The co-ord features a cropped denim jacket with a slightly distressed hem, matched with a denim mini-skirt in the same print.

The easiest way to look completely on trend is to wear the set together, with a black or white t-shirt or crop underneath.

However, you could team the jacket with jeans and runners for a casual Friday work look, or add the skirt to a black turtle neck jumper, cosy tights and boots.

Jacket €21.00, skirt €15.00, both Penneys

The set landed in the past week, so make sure you get down to Penneys and snap one up before they're all gone.

Ireland has a long history of babies being sadly separated from their birth mothers.

For Colleen Anderson, this is exactly what happened.

When she was just three years old, Colleen was taken from her mother by the church and put on a plane headed for Chicago to meet her new family.

Now 52-years-old, Colleen is desperate to be reunited with the family she never knew.

She has set up a Go Fund Me campaign to raise $1,500 so that she can come back to Ireland to meet her family and stay here.

She was born August 4th, 1965, at Sean Ross Abbey in Roscrea to a 16-year-old victim of rape, Josephine O'Brien.

Josephine was dealt the same fate as many other girls in the 1950's who found themselves pregnant and unmarried.

Anderson said, ''the way she was treated was a source of shame her entire life."

Sister Hildegarde McNulty arranged for the 3-year-old Colleen to go to McNulty's niece, Margaret, in north suburban Niles.

Her adoptive mother suffered from mental illness, and Colleen ''left home as soon as I was able."

Colleen did locate her birth mother in 1998 and flew to Dublin, but the meeting didn't go well.

Her mother had gone on to have four other children and had, according to Colleen buried this piece of her past.

Josephine passed away in 2009 and her  husband, Aidan, told his children about their unknown stepsister in America.

Today, Colleen is close to her half brother, Myles, and will visit him in his home in Florida this month.

Colleen explains on her GoFundme page that she is looking to renew her Irish passport, her green card, buy a plane ticket, and raise spare funds for living expenses.

''I want to go home,'' she writes.

Hopefully, this might help her make that dream a reality.
