“The young lads went overboard but this is what young lads do on occasion. They have suffered far too much.”

This was a comment written by Billy Keane, in the comment section of The Irish Independent, in the wake of the Ballyragget scandal.

In case you need a bit of refreshing on the Ballyragget case, a scandal erupted in the small Kilkenny village after some photos of the intermediate hurling team celebrating a club victory went viral.

There were strippers involved, and claims that one of them, Fifi, was paid for performing a sex act on a player.

But of course, instead of being thoroughly investigated for their viral (literally thousands of people saw the pictures and videos) misconduct, the men (not boys, not “young lads”, but grown-ass men) were given nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

This culture of ‘boys will boys’ and ‘it’s just a bit of craic’ is a cover for a much deeper misogyny that has reared its ugly head in Ireland recently. We’ve had enough, it’s time for Ireland’s #TimesUp moment.

If the trial of four rugby players, including Paddy Jackson and Stuart Olding, has shown us anything it’s that ‘lad culture’ is strong in sport- and that sport will stop at nothing to protect its own.

Let me preface this by saying that I have absolutely nothing against rugby or the GAA. Sport is a fantastic way of bringing families, communities and entire countries together. It is a treasured social outlet for many men and women. Professional and dedicated sportspeople deserve our highest respect, but that does not mean that they are above the law, despite their acquittal of all charges clearly stating otherwise.

Male GAA and rugby stars command the same amount of notoriety and power, as film stars and Hollywood hotshots do in the United States. We’re a small nation, so to make it big, most of our actors and musicians head for the bright lights of the States or London. But one thing we refuse to export are sportspeople.

In rugby, our national team have taken on Goliaths like England, France and the All Blacks, and we’ve won. This is an immense source of Irish pride, and it’s hard not to feel something when our team is given the Six Nations or places in the World Cup.

Those men (and women, the ladies team deserve far more recognition than they get) are representing us, they are Ireland on the pitch.

So, what happens when one of our stars is accused of rape? The “lads only club” kicks in.

Lad culture and rugby are synonymous. Don’t believe me? Ross O’Carroll-Kelly created an entire series about it.

According to a report published by the National Union of Students in the UK, Lad Culture in universities is damaging and sexist. Lad Culture can be defined as a version of masculinity that promotes pack mentality, excessive drinking, multiple sexual partners and overtly homophobic, sexist and aggressive language in the form of “banter”.

While the study focuses on Lad Culture in universities, it does note the connection between sports and ‘laddisms’.

“‘Lad Culture’ was thought to be particularly influential in the social side of university life,” states the report.

“Extracurricular activities and sports in particular were singled out as key sites, and it was reported that sexism in such environments could spill over into sexual harassment and humiliation.”

This ‘banter’, while explicitly sexual and violent is usually dismissed as “just a bit of craic”. Speaking out about it or challenging offensive sexual speak leaves us to open to being called “dry”, “hysterical”, or even worse, “one of those man-hating feminists”.

Women, and men, uncomfortable with these laddisms are left to suffer in silence- or even become compliant and join in on the ‘banter’.

The ‘banter’ flying about the Whatsapp group the morning after the aforementioned alleged rape further proves this.

The morning after the acts took place, one of the rugby players posted a selfie of himself with three female party-goers, captioned “Love Belfast sluts.”

Charming.

A friend replied, “Boys, did you lads spit roast lasses? Legends!! … why are we all such legends?” to which the man responded: “I know. It’s ridiculous.”

The conversation continued on a similar vein, with one message asking if the women were “Brassers”- Belfast slang for prostitutes.

“Two days after the alleged rape, at 11.28am,” writes The Irish Independent. “Mr McIlroy sent a message to a friend stating: ‘Pumped a bird with Jacko on Monday. Roasted her. Then another on Tuesday night.’”

To be honest, they sound more like they were describing a chicken dinner, than actual sex.

Image result for me too

Rape jokes and other such lad culture tripe serve to dehumanise women, completely disregarding any kind of consent. She is no longer a woman, sister, daughter, friend. She is a “bird” waiting to be “pumped” and “roasted”.

The fact that that defence lawyer called these texts a "titillating sideshow", only proves the power of misogynistic power of "banter" over a woman's right to speak her truth.

This is not just ‘banter’ between team mates, it’s symptomatic of a wider disregard for consent. In the words of Stuart Olding, “I didn't force myself on her. I presume she wanted it to happen. She didn't have to stay, she could have left.”

Okay, let’s break this one down.

They’re rugby players, it’s literally their job to be as physically strong as possible. By his own admission, Olding had consumed “eight cans of Carlsberg beer, four pints of Guinness, two gins, five vodka and lemonades and three shots of tequila and sambuca.” Combine an athletics physical strength with that amount of alcohol and even what might not seem to be any force for them could literally crush a normal person.

Now to, “I presume she wanted it to happen.”

No. Just, no.

He “presumed” she wanted to have sex with him, because why wouldn't she? They’ve constantly been told that they’re brilliant since they were tackling a teddy in their cribs. In Ireland, the recognition that sports receive is the equivalent to a Hollywood A-lister. Why wouldn't any woman want you? It goes with the territory. Wrong.

Couple this egotism with the laddist ignoring consensual conversations, any regard for the woman’s wishes in this situation has been ignored.

As the old saying goes, “If you assume, you make an ‘ass’ of ‘u’ and ‘me’.”

And apparently, none of this was enough to actually convict any of them. All four have walked free.

It’s not funny, it’s not banter. It’s the last bastion of overt and accepted misogyny of our so-called “equal” society.

Like I said before, sport is not the only area where “lad culture” flourishes.

Sport doesn't have to be like this. In fact, the team bond and their visibility make them an excellent place for open conversation, debate and education. Just look at soccer's 'Give Respect, Get Respect' Campaign. Yeah, it didn't solve racism but at least it CALLED IT OUT.

Take a look at the Times Up movement in the States, it’s only once we start an open and inclusive conversation can this be fixed. Dragging the problem kicking and screaming into the spotlight instead of writing it off as just another grey area.

The days of hushing sexual assault and harassment under the carpet embroidered “boys will be boys” are over. Let’s take what happened in Belfast as a beginning, a beginning of a brighter, healthier, more inclusive era for Ireland’s sports teams.

It’s everyone’s responsibility to talk about consent, not just women. It starts with a simple replacing of “It’s just a bit of craic” with “Lads, cut it out.” It starts with saying "I believe her".

Just because they've walked away, doesn't mean that women are going to be silenced.  We owe it to her to speak up. We owe it to ourselves, our sisters, friends, co-workers to call time on this bullshit perception that men can get away with saying and doing whatever they want.

We owe it to our daughters, to be able to tell them that we're the reason that they can go out and feel safe.

We owe it to our sons, to teach them that real men respect women.

In the wake of the not guilty verdict given by the jury in the Belfast rape trial of Paddy Jackson and his teammate Stuart Olding, people have been taking to Twitter to express their support for the victim.

Blane McIlroy and Rory Harrison were also found not guilty of perverting the course of justice and withholding information.

Public opinion clearly shows an opposing view to the verdict, with the #IBelieveHer trending in Ireland minutes after the verdict was read:

The jury in the trial of the Belfast rugby rape trail has found all four men not guilt on all charges.

The complainant had alleged she was raped by Ulster and Ireland rugby player Paddy Jackson, and orally raped by his teammate Stuart Olding.

Blane McIlroy (26), from Royal Lodge Road denies exposure, while 25-year old Rory Harrison, from Manse Road was charged with perverting the course of justice and withholding information.

All four men denied the charges made against them throughout the nine-week trial.

The jury, which consisted of eight men and three women, reached their unanimous verdict after three hours and 40 minutes of deliberation.

So, unless you're just back from a tech-free yoga retreat, or somehow slept through the last 48 hours, you'll know there's one questions that's diving the internet – who bit Beyoncé?

Yesterday we reported that in an interview with GQ, Tiffany Haddish revealed that she has witnessed an unnamed actress bite the Lemonade singer on the face at a Jay-Z after party in Los Angeles last December.

As expected, the rumour mill has been in overdrive ever since, and the bookies have even started to take bets on the scandal.

Lena Dunham is the current favourite, FYI.

It's basically this generation's version of 'Who shot JR?', but now, thanks to the power of social media, we can all share our crazy theories, and perhaps even get to the bottom of this once and for all.

Here's some of our favourites:

1. C'mon Chrissy, just spill!

2. Stranger things have happened…

3. Highly unlikely tbh.

4. Becky with the good teeth.

5. Can you imagine?

6. Solid guess.

7. Please let this happen!

8. Don't even go there.

New plans being considered by the Department of Health could see charges for the morning-after-pill be abolished or significantly reduced, as part of the Government's new sexual health programme.

Speaking yesterday, Health Minister Simon Harris outlined plans for a comprehensive women's health programme which will aim to allow for greater access to condoms, emergency contraception, as well as a potential price decrease for the everyday contraceptive pill with a view to making it completely free in the future.

As it stands, the emergency contraceptive pill can cost anywhere between €15-€50, while the everyday contraceptive pill costs an average of €10 per month (not including the GP fee).

According to The Journal, a new three-year education programme will also be rolled out in schools across the country which will include enhanced resources and lesson plans around the subject of sexual health.

As well as that, the new programme will also include a 'safer sex' advertising campaign and sexual health promotion training for professionals in youth sector, those working with at-risk groups, and for parents.

Minister Simon Harris stressed that these changes will go ahead, regardless of the result of the upcoming referendum on the legalisation of abortion services.

“I want to make it clear that these initiatives can and will be implemented even if the proposed referendum is not passed,” he said.

It's understood the proposed initiatives will be funded in 2019, which, according to the Minister, will give him time to prepare the ground for the changes.

We've all been there – 12pm comes and you already feel like you've given all you can give for the day. Sure, you might perk up for 20 minutes or so after lunch, but really, it's all down hill from there.

Between your hourly tea break, scrolling through ASOS sales, and basically doing anything other than what you're supposed to be doing, there's not much time for anything else now is there?

Well, according to new survey, the average employee is productive for just under three hours a day (2h 53m to be precise).

Sound about right?

VocherCloud asked 1,989 full-time office workers about how they really spend their working days, and as you probably guessed, there's not a whole lot of work going on inside those cubicles.

When asked – “Do you consider yourself to be productive throughout the entire working day?” 79 per cent of respondents said 'no' (and the other 21 per cent were lying).

So, what are we doing instead?

Well, here are the top 10 responses from participants when asked what they actually do at work and how long they spend doing it:

1. Checking social media – 47 per cent/ 44 minutes

2. Reading news websites – 45 per cent/ 1 hour 5 minutes

3. Discussing out-of-work activities with colleagues – 38 per cent/ 40 minutes

4. Making hot drinks – 31 per cent/ 17 minutes

5. Smoking breaks – 28 per cent/ 23 minutes

6. Text/instant messaging – 27 per cent/ 14 minutes

7. Eating snacks – 25 per cent/ 8 minutes

8. Making food in office – 24 per cent/ 7 minutes

9. Making calls to partner/ friends- 24 per cent/ 18 minutes

10. Searching for new jobs – 19 per cent/ 26 minutes

You can't deny the facts – three-hour working days for all!

One Cork hairdresser is going the extra mile this Easter, collecting chocolate eggs to give to homeless families in need.

Joseph Byrne's Hair Salon on the Glasheen Road will be accepting donation until 12.00pm on Good Friday.

He told Patricia Messinger on C103’s Cork Today show that the people of Cork had really taken to the initiative.

"I can't believe what we've got so far," he said.

"People get so many and they don't know what to do with them. If there's an overflow of them we'll take them."

The response has been great so far with local supermarkets having donated €70 worth of Easter eggs, while another shop offered 30.

The eggs will be given to Edel House and Cork Penny Dinner, who will then distribute them to homeless families across Cork.

This isn't the first time Joseph has shown his charitable steak. A few times a years, he opens the salon so homeless people can avail of a wash, cut and blowdry free of charge.

Spice Girls fans unite!

We've been following their reunion every step of the way – from that adorable pic they posted to their possible performance at the royal wedding's reception (we still have our fingers crossed).

Now Variety reports that an animated movie about the supergroup is being shopped to potential producers!

A post shared by Mel B (@officialmelb) on

Their source says that each member of the iconic 90s girl group has signed off on their likenesses being used for a superhero film.

We can't imagine anything more fun than showing a Spice Girls superhero movie to our little siblings, nieces  – or, you know, just watching it on our own. Literally no judgement.

The film would have 'girl power' as its core message and, suitably, each of the Spice Girls would have their own 'girl power' that matches with their persona.

Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Mel B (Scary Spice), Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice), Mel C (Sporty Spice), and Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) would each voice their own character as well.

According to Variety, the Spice Girls' manager Simon Fuller has not commented on their possible reunion plans.

Fingers crossed!

Earlier this year, Kim Kardashian sent fans into a beauty -fuelled frenzy when she revealed that after 10 years of working together, she and makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic were collaborating on a very exciting makeup launch.

The teaser pic, posted on the official KKW Beauty Instagram account, showed a black and image photo of a selection of eyeshadows, titled KKW X MARIO.

And while the monotone effect masked the exact shades of the shadows, we knew from the moment we laid eyes on the sample of shimmers and mattes that we would instantly fall in love with the finished version.

To make the launch extra-special, the palette will be released on the 10-year anniversary of Kim and Mario's working relationship. Reminiscing on their friendship, Mario shared a snap of his work diary from 2008 along with a lengthy post.

A post shared by MAKEUP BY MARIO (@makeupbymario) on

It read: "This is my calendar from 2008 that I still have. 10 years ago, on April 5th, 2008 I met @kimkardashian on a cover shoot. I almost didn’t take the job because I had to work at Fox that afternoon where I did makeup for the anchors on the weekends for extra $. At this point I had been a makeup artist for 8 years in NYC, honing my craft, building my portfolio and paying my dues. Retail, weddings, editorial, TV, personal clients, assisting.

"I began working with some singers and actresses around this time & then I met Kim and began to work with her often. The idea of a reality star at the time was new. After all my years paying dues and assisting some of the big fashion and celeb makeup greats, I was being groomed to begin working with A list stars- actresses & recording artists.

"I had an agent who demanded that I stop working with Kim immediately. They said I would ruin my career and my career would end within a year or 2. That all of my hard work and struggles until then would be for nothing. Was I going to sit and worry about what the elitist industry would think of me and try to fit into their mould? I refused. I chose to stick with Kim because it felt right in my heart. She was hard working, loyal and sweet. She kept me insanely busy. She appreciated me and my artistry and I had too much respect for her. When I parted ways with my agency, one of the last things they said to me was “good luck, Mario because you will never get a Vogue cover working with her.” Swipe left to see how that turned out.

"Never let anyone dictate the trajectory of your life and career. The past decade with Kim has been incredible. We’ve grown together, set trends, inspired and impacted an industry along the way. Through all her milestones and achievements and through her rise to global superstardom she has taken me along the way and impacted my life greatly, helping me to achieve unparalleled success of my own as a celebrity makeup artist. I am so excited to finally announce that on April 5, 2018 – exactly 10 years to the day we met, our #KKWxMARIO collaboration with @kkwbeauty will launch! Turn on notifications for the very first reveal tomorrow! #KKWxMARIO"

As you can tell from the video, the eyeshadows are super pigmented and come in an array of stunning neutral tones as well as an electric blue.

You may have also spotted the lip glosses and lip sticks that complete the collection.

Skin problems can get us down on the best of days, and despite loving the skin we are in, sometimes our issues can make our skin feel out of control.

Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that can be characterised by red patches on the face, and can affect both men and women.

It tends to present itself as a rash usually on the face, and occurs predominantly in middle-aged, fair-skinned people, between the ages of 30 and 60.

The forehead, cheeks, chin and nose are the areas most commonly affected, and can be reddened with dilated blood vessels, red bumps and pus filled spots. Inflammation of the eyes or eyelids may be present.

According to Marie Therese Burke, National Trainer with Graham Anthony Distribution, there are four different stages of rosacea ( and we probs have them all, tbh):

1. Facial redness or vasomotor flushing
The first stage of rosacea is where a redness appears on the face’s skin, appearing similar to a sunburn. This is caused by flushing – when excess blood rapidly flows through the skin's blood vessels, which then need to enlarge in order to handle this flow. After a period of time facial skin can become very dry whilst the redness can become more noticeable.

2. Erythrosis or Couperose
In some cases there will be a second stage, where small permanent red vessels can appear progressively on the face. This is mainly found on the cheekbones and the nose. This is called “couperosis”

3. Papulopustular Rosacea
This is when bumps and pimple-like eruptions add to the redness. Some of the bumps at this stage can become infected with acne-causing bacteria. This stage is often what people are referring to when they say they have acne rosacea.

4. Rhinophyma
If the condition progresses, the nose will become swollen, appear redder and bumpy which changes its shape. This swelling is because there is formation of scar-like tissue and the sebaceous glands (which produce oil on the skin) get bigger. This fourth stage is usually only found where rosacea has been active for many years.

So what's a gal to do about it?

Marie Therese suggests using fragrance-free products that contain active ingredients. This will help to smooth, moisturise, protect and treat rosacea. Vitamin B and C are also very important; vitamin B protects skin from external irritants by fortifying the skin and vitamin C will strengthen the wall of delicate vessels.
