Yearly Archives: 2017

Earlier this year we announced that we were on the hunt for Ireland’s most style-savvy fashionista.

We said that the crown was reserved for the blogger, social media star or famous face who is absolutely killing it on the fashion scene right now.

And you guys responded in your droves.

So, without further ado, here are the five finalists for our Style Icon of the Year Award!

Courtney Smith

As a stylist, creative director and all-round fashionista, Courtney Smith's appeal cannot be overestimated.

With fans and followers that number in their tens of thousands, Courtney's contribution to the world of fashion is one of the most impactful of the last decade.

Louise Cooney

Dividing her time between the worlds of fashion and travel, Louise Cooney has made a serious name for herself as a style icon.

With a background in Communications & Marketing, Louise has a knack for making style relatable and fashion fun.

Clementine MacNeice

One of the most sought after stylists in Ireland today, Clementine's route to the world of fashion was somewhat unconventional.

Having initially embarked upon an English and Drama degree in Trinity College, Clementine couldn't ignore her passion for fashion, and ultimately threw herself into various style-related jobs before establishing herself within the industry she loves.

Suzanne Jackson

Over the course of seven years, Suzanne has watched her blog, SoSueMe, go from strength to strength.

And with over a million followers worldwide, the beauty and lifestyle fashionista recently decided to branch into the world of design cementing her reputation as a bonafide style icon.

Vogue Williams

Having first come to public prominence for her role in reality TV show Fade Street, Vogue's career has gone from strength to strength over the last seven years.

And while currently best known for her role in media, Vogue's modelling background means her flair for fashion always shines through.

Kylie Jenner has become known for her substantial pout and the products she uses to enhance them, and the success of her Kylie Cosmetics empire has been undeniable.

The teen has now teamed up with big sister Kim to create the KKW by Kylie Cosmetics Collection, and makeup fans are already clamouring to get their hands on the covetable kit.

Kylie first took to Twitter to reveal a teaser trailer for the collection, showing her and Kim twinning with nude, glowy makeup looks.

The teen then followed up on Snapchat last night, revealing the collection in its entirety.

The collaboration takes the form of a four-piece lip collection comprising of delightful nudes and pinks, to 'create her signature look.'

The first of the four shades is called Kimberly, and looks like the perfect nude shade.

The second, called Kim, is more of a peachy-nude.

Kiki follows, with the teen swatching the pink-nude on her arm.

Lastly is Kimmie, which is a gorgeous rich nude shade.

Kylie also promises that the formula is a brand new creme consistency, which the teen proclaims to be 'authentic to Kim.'

Will Smith is the favourite to play the Genie in the live-action remake of Aladdin

The Men In Black actor is currently in early negotiations with Disney to play the iconic character, according to Deadline.

A post shared by cinema (@h9cinema) on

Disney are keen to keep the success of their remakes rolling, after Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson smashed box office records.

If the rumours are true, then Will Smith will be the first big name to join the cast.

Will Smith will certainly have some big shoes to fill, as the original Genie in the 1992 classic was voiced by the late Robin WIlliams.

Filming is set to take place from July 2017 to January 2018, and a release date has not yet been announced.

The film will be directed by Guy Ritchie

13 Reasons Why, Netflix’s latest series has been causing some controversy lately.

The series, produced by Selena Gomez, follows the story of 17-year-old Hannah Baker, a high-school student who ultimately takes her own life, and while many viewers have applauded the creators for tackling such an important and sensitive issue, others have suggested that the show 'glamorises' suicide.

A statement released by Netflix to ABC News read:

"We support the unflinching vision of the show's creators, who engaged the careful advice of medical professionals in the scriptwriting process."

"We wanted to do it in a way where it was honest, and we wanted to make something that can hopefully help people because suicide should never ever be an option."

Dan Reidenberg, executive director for Suicide Awareness Voices of Education responded to the statement saying, "There is a great concern that I have, that young people are going to over-identify with Hannah in the series, and we actually may see more suicides as a result.''

"There should be no reason, no justification whatsoever, why any kind of production – entertainment or news – would be so descriptive and so graphic."

Due to the graphic nature of some of the scenes, Twitter users have been warning people to stay away form the series if they have struggled with depression, self-harm or sexual abuse.

There was an air of discontent among the Irish public when it was announced on Tuesday that the new National Maternity Hospital would be given to religious order The Sisters Of Charity, according to The Irish Times.

The move was met with criticism from the public, who took over Twitter to express their opposition to the move.

Now, an online petition has started, in an attempt to draw attention to the issue.

The petition has gained 49,036 signatures in 24 hours, and is now just 64 pledges away from the goal of 50,000.

'The Sisters of Charity is one of 18 residential institutions that is highlighted by the Ryan report 2009 to have been responsible for child abuse,' reads the petition manifesto.

'They still owe €3 million to the redress scheme for its survivors. The Sisters of Charity, along with three other religious congregations, were responsible for the management of Magdalene Laundries.'

'In 2013 they stated they would not be making ANY contributions to the State redress scheme to the women who had been subject abuse in the Magdalene Laundries.'

'The Department of Health now want to give 'sole' ownership of the new €300 million State-funded National Maternity Hospital. Deny them 'sole' ownership.'

'Demand they formally apologise and pay redress.'

Minister for Health Simon Harris has stood by the decision, tweeting: 'When it comes to our maternity services, I take the views of those responsible for the delivery of infants & the clinical care of women.'

'It is correct that the land on which the new maternity hospital will be built is owned by the St. Vincent’s Healthcare Group and that the Sisters of Charity are a major shareholder in the St. Vincent’s Healthcare Group," reads a Department of Health statement.

'The identity and ethos of the current NMH will be retained.'

'The new company will have clinical and operational independence in the provision of maternity, gynaecology and neonatal services, without religious, ethnic or other distinction, as well as financial and budgetary independence.'

We've seen all the films and TV shows where they use a magical potion to make some unsuspecting lonely soul fall in love… and now it might actually become a reality.

We're kinda sceptical though, since the potions never really worked out in any of the movies we saw.

Neuroscientist, Dr Anders Sandberg, from the University of Oxford, told The Independent: “The thing that really creates a bond together is the dopamine system.

"Many of the symptoms are similar to taking a stimulant effect. You have a dopamine release in your frontal lobe, and this causes you to recognise that this is someone who you should be around, who you should feel close to.”

So basically, he thinks that a love potion could work if its combined with oxytocin, vasopressin and corticotropin-releasing hormone (CPH).

These compounds are essentially what make you miss your significant other when they're away from you.

We do think this could be a tad bit dodge, but it may be potentially used to strengthen pre-existing relationships.

Interesting…

Count Dublin lucky, because it has been chosen as one of three citites to host an inflatable Moe's Tavern.

Yep, The Simpsons are coming to Dublin next month to launch the inflatable pub, which is only open in London and LA.

However, it's no wonder it's coming to Dublin, since Inflatable Pubs Global, the company running the launch, is Irish-owned.

Owner of the company, Lisa McMahon said of Moe's Tavern: "Effectively it is like a blow up marquee, and made from the same material as a bouncy castle, but the interior will be an exact replica of the one in the Simpsons

"We are even hoping to be able to import and provide Duff beer like Homer drinks.

"We have done an inflatable Queen Vic for an EastEnders fan, and we can do The Rovers Return from Coronation Street or McCoys from Fair City, or even the ‘local’ from back home for emigrants.

"Next on the list is the Nags Head from only Fools and Horses!"

The location and details of the launch are still under wraps, but you can find out more info here.

Vogue Williams has called out a troll on Facebook after she sent her a rather nasty message.

The DJ has had her fair share of online abuse, and decided that enough was enough.

After receiving a message that read, "Wh*re! Ashamed that your Irish you big sl*t," Vogue decided to name and shame her by posting the message to her own Facebook page.

"You're very easy to find on Facebook Eimear Conway. What a lovely way to conduct yourself sending people you don't know messages like this!

"I think it's time to get off Facebook and get back to your studies! It's you're not your babes….," she wrote.

Vogue was praised in the comments section of the post, with one fan saying, "Well done Vogue! Silly girl needs to go back to school to learn how to punctuate correctly. You're an inspiration to young girls, not a wh*re!"

While another user wrote, "Absolute vile words from a grown woman. Keep doing what you're doing Vogue (sic)."

We doubt she'll ever troll anyone again after that!
