In recent years coconut oil has been hailed as a one-stop wonder pot for pretty much everything.

Moisturise your skin, conditioner your hair, whiten your teeth – is there anything this stuff can't do?

Many of us have also taken to using it while cooking as a 'healthier' alternative to some of the other cooking oils on the market.

However, a new health advisory published in the US suggests that there are no significant studies to support the claim that it is better for us.

According to The American Heart Association (AHA), coconut oil is made up of 82 per cent saturated fat, which is known to increase bad cholesterol levels.

Lead author of the advisory and professor at the Harvard School of Public Health, Frank Sacks say the media is to blame for shaping “public perception about saturated fats.”

He adds, “One of the real problems in transmitting health information is that generally people who are writing about it don’t look into what’s come before.”

“The media also don’t pay much attention to new studies that support or extend current dietary recommendations.”

“The overall effect has misled the public on the science of dietary fats.”

Maintaining a high ratio of good to bad cholesterol is key when consuming saturated fats, and according to scientists, coconut oil simply doesn't fit the bill.

Frank continued, “I just don’t know who is pushing it, but it’s not scientists."

“It may be driven by manufacturers looking to profit, or some countries’ economic dependence on coconut oil.”

However, if you are looking for a healthier oil to use when cooking, Frank recommends canola oil which contains relatively low amounts of saturated fats (7 per cent).

A security operation is currently underway at the Champs-Elysees district in Paris.

Several news outlets have confirmed that Parisian police say a "major security operation" is unfolding in the area.

It is not yet known whether it is terrorist-related.

According to The Daily Mail, police have pinned a man down in the district.

Another report by AFP states that a car rammed into a police van before bursting into flames.

This is a breaking story. More to follow.

With three branches in Dublin – one currently hosting a smoothie bowl pop up – Cocu is one of our favourite places for a health food fix in town.

And we have asked founder of Cocu, Emilia Rowan, successful chef and entrepreneur, to share her food and drinks habits with us.

A post shared by CoCu (@cocu_kitchen) on

What is your typical breakfast?
I usually have eggs, smoked salmon and smashed avocado in Cocu.

What about lunch?
It is very boring, but I would mostly have a Cocu salad, or a wrap when I'm on the go.

I love sushi and ramen so I go to The Ramen Bar on South William Street when I meet my dad for lunch.

Another favourite is the "Al pastor tacos" in El Grito on Merchant's Arch – they do the most authentic tacos and it is always busy and affordable.

What do you usually have for dinner?
I love fish: it's quick and easy to prepare so perfect for dinner as I am usually home late.

It is different at the weekend, I would either be eating out or having people over to our flat. When eating out, I love a good pizza place, or a Bunsen!

Do you snack during the day?
I don't really snack, probably because I am working on my feet and on the move. I think if I was sitting at a desk all day I would probably snack to break up the day.

What would be your ideal food day?
Breakfast would be in Spain, a tostada with jamon iberico and tomato spread, a strong coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice.

Lunch would be moules frites and for dinner, I would share an Indian feast in Pickle Restaurant on Camden Street.

The one food you could have everyday for the rest of your life?
Eggs; I eat them every day, in lots of different ways.

What is your favourite dessert?
Vanilla ice cream with loads of hot chocolate sauce!

What is your favourite meal of the day?
Dinner, because there's time to enjoy it and I'm usually eating with either my boyfriend, family or friends. I love cooking dinner for anyone who is around.

Your favourite restaurant in Dublin/Ireland/the world?
Terra Madre on the quays: it is like you have stepped into an Italian family home. The food and welcome is the best, if I could eat there every day I would!

The world…Japan; I am dying to go to Japan and eat my way around.

The best brunch place in Dublin?
I'd have to say Cocu on Chatham Street! We do a healthy brunch there at the weekend and there is no booking needed.

I'm not a big fan of eating brunch around Dublin, I like to be more spontaneous at the weekends and most brunch places you have to book which doesn't really suit me.

Any “food pet peeves”?
Poorly filled sambos. I like mine to be packed with filling.

A post shared by CoCu (@cocu_kitchen) on

What food would you NEVER eat?
Not much, I will try anything once, and haven't come across much that I wouldn't eat again. I'm easy to please food wise.

What can we always find in your fridge?
Lemons and garlic. I would use both a lot in cooking, Lemons especially; if in doubt, add a squeeze of lemon or some zest.

You have friends over for dinner, what do you cook for them?
Anything and everything. I love cooking Middle Eastern things, as they're great for sharing.

My favourite cookbook at the moment is called Honey & Co (from a Middle Eastern restaurant in London). Last week, I cooked butterflied lamb with salad, hummus, pomegranate, pickled red onion and yoghurt. It was tasty and perfect for sharing.

Do you find it hard to eat a healthy diet in a daily basis?
Yes and no; I have pretty good habits generally. However if I am in any way hungover, the healthy diet gets derailed slightly. But there's no point not enjoying life, so I try not to beat myself up about it and annoyingly follow my dads advice of 'everything in moderation' – it is the best advice but I don't like telling him he's right!

What is your guilty pleasure?
Fried chicken from the chipper. A recent find and it is a serious guilty pleasure…

What is you go-to drink?
I love ice cold beers in a pub and if I need a pick me up, an espresso martini is my favourite.

Your favourite place for a drink in Dublin?
Slatterys in Rathmines. Great atmosphere and interesting people to chat to.

As a community attempts to come to terms with a tragedy which claimed the lives of dozens of people in a London tower block last week, media outlets, high-profile personalities and members of the public are asking questions of authorities in recent days.

Using her Sunday World column to express her disbelief over the tragedy, 31-year-old Vogue Williams offered her own insights into the matter.

The radio and TV presenter, who has a degree in  Construction Design And Management as well as Quantitative Surveying, used her knowledge of the subject to question the scale of the tragedy.

"As someone who did two building-related degrees, I can't quite understand how a fire from a fridge in a flat on the fourth floor spread all over the building within 15 minutes," she wrote.

Acknowledging one particular constructional factor, she continued: "The external cladding used on the building was highly flammable and is a material banned in America – for reasons that seem very obvious now."

Like many people over the last week, Vogue was keen to point out the apparent inadequacies displayed by those in authority, writing: "There seems to have been failings on so many levels from the people who were in charge of this building."

"Families have been torn apart by this and it's incredibly upsetting to watch this unfold on the news," added Vogue who recently faced backlash over her stance on terrorists.

The latest reports out of London put the number of fatalities of the blaze at 79.

Pizza flavour ice-cream is now a thing and we don't know how we feel about.

In theory, two of the greatest foods on the planet should combine to make the perfect dish, but we can't help be a tad sceptical about this slightly odd flavour fusion.

The guys and gals at Philadelphia's Little Baby's Ice Cream have decided to push the limits of dessert as we know it by creating a pizza flavoured ice cream complete with tomato, oregano, basil, salt and garlic.

What's more, although the customers can enjoy the treat in a traditional waffle cone, the shop actually recommends serving it with a slice of your favourite pizza.

Because hey, if you're going to do it, you might as well do it right.

This isn't the first time the Philadelphia ice-cream shop has baffled customers with their odd choice of flavours. They're also known for their Cricket Cake, which is exactly what it sounds like.

Other stars of this flavour freak-show include Cucumber Dill, Pepper Lavender and its ‘flagship oddball flavour’, Earl Grey Sriracha.

Unfortunately, you'll have to make a trip to the States if you want to sample these wonderfully weird creations, but tasty or not, Little Baby's Ice Cream just got added to our foodie bucket list.

There are few among us who don't – on some level – know that we should be drinking more water.

And while we may chug a litre before, during and after a work-out or drink it by the bucket-load when we're hungover, not all of us are as judicious when it comes to staying hydrated on a day-to-day basis.

If you respond well to limits and like to know when you're hitting a target, then it might be worth considering your water intake in relation to your body weight.

Here's what you need to do:

Establish your weight in lbs and divide that figure in half. This figure is the number of ounces of water you need to consume per day.

And since we work in litres here, you should know that there are 33 ounces to every litre.

It's also important to note that this calculation is based on the body at rest which means when you're sitting at your desk or pottering around your house, but it's a good starting point, right?

A new study has found that a condition known as 'broken heart syndrome' (Takotsubo syndrome) could cause longer-lasting damage than was previously thought.

The syndrome, which can cause temporary heart failure, can be triggered by severe emotional distress such as the death of a loved one or the break-down of a relationship.

Until now, it was believed that the heart made a full recovery following the trauma, however, research from Aberdeen University has suggested that this may not be the case.

Researchers looked at 52 patients with Takotsubo syndrome, using ultrasound and cardiac MRI scans to examine how their hearts were functioning.

The results showed that the condition permanently affected the heart's pumping motion, essentially delaying the twisting and squeezing motions made by the muscle during a heartbeat.

Parts of the heart's muscle were also found to have been replaced by fine scars, which reduce its elasticity and prevent it from contracting properly.

According to the BBC, researchers said the findings may explain why people who suffer from Takotsbo syndrome have similar long-term survival rates to people who have had a heart attack.

Lead researcher, Dr Dana Dawson, said:  "We used to think that people who suffered from takotsubo cardiomyopathy would fully recover, without medical intervention.”

"Here we've shown that this disease has much longer lasting damaging effects on the hearts of those who suffer from it."

Between 3 per cent and 17 percent of people with the syndrome die within five years of diagnosis.

What's more, a massive 90 per cent of sufferers are women and stress is identified as a contributing factor in approximately 70 per cent of cases.

Unfortunately it looks like time can't always mend a broken heart.

We probably only get 3.5 days of pure sunshine in Ireland, so it's safe to say we all get a little excited when the temperature rises above 20C.

And since the whole weekend was filled with an enormous amount of glorious sun, most of us probably did a few things on the list here.

1. Checked the weather app on your phone

Because you never believe the weather woman on TV. Plus, you need to screenshot that sh*t for Instagram.

2. Announced your delight that the sun is out to everyone

'The weather's gorgeous, isn't it?' was uttered to your mam, neighbour, milkman, dog.

3. Made extravagant BBQ plans

Then you found out that the BBQ was broken or rusted… Trip to IKEA it is!

barbecue, beer, cutlery

4. Pulled out your holiday clothes

Because we might as well be in Costa Rica. Short shorts, crop tops, flowy dresses, sandals; all made an appearance.

5. 'Forgot' about applying sun screen

Because we're all stupid and never learn. Cue farmer's tan.

6. Tried to be ~*adventurous*~

Hiked up mountains, dived off cliffs… tried to let your inner Bear Grylls out.

7. Thought it was a good idea to go day drinking

Sure, what else would you be doing when the sun is out in Ireland?

8. Regretted your decision to go day drinking

Come 4 o'clock, you're already langers and don't know what to do with the rest of your day.

9. Decided to do it all over again the next day

The short shorts, the beer, the regret… the fun.
