Yearly Archives: 2017

With a long line of medals to her name, US athlete Alysia Montaño is already inspiring enough.

But she's gained even more recognition this week after she took part in an 800m run… while five months pregnant.

Alysia finished seventh in her heat at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships, which we think is pretty great considering she's carrying a little human inside of her.

The athlete shared a photo on Instagram, where she's wearing a Wonder Women sports top (FTW).

She said: "About last night… 2017 USA Nationals with baby #2 at 5 months pregnant.

"I have some pretty awesome maternity photos from both pregnancies."

She then added the hashtags: "#Wonderwoman #ShesAllOFUS and #be yourjourney."

Alysia previously ran during her first pregnancy, and received backlash as people thought she was trying to shame other pregnant women who didn't exercise.

However, she told the Washington Post this weekend that she wasn't trying to shame pregnant women, she's simply just on her own journey.

“This isn’t to pressure women to run during pregnancy. That’s not the point at all.

“We’re just different and that’s the point.”

What a total QUEEN.

Don't get us wrong, most before and after fitness transformation photos are the result of months or years of hard work.

The images show the participants' commitment to the gym and dedication to honing their body in a certain way, and the motivation snaps completely saturate most fitness social media feeds.

However, one fitness guru has taken it upon herself to make us think twice about before and after shots with an interesting snap of her own.

The Fashion Fitness Foodie took to Instagram to share this snap with her 55,000 followers, to prove that before and after snaps are not always as they seem.

'What does this image honestly do for you? I took it over a week ago with the intention of posting a tensing vs 'pushing out' reality check,' she captioned the image.⠀ ⠀

'However shortly after I made it, I…suddenly realised how incredibly demotivating it could be for the body positivity movement,' she said, recognising how important it is to be body pos.

'You see although my intentions were good (and correct me if I’m wrong), I’m aware that my body shape is probably not very diverse.'

'So I question how inspiring it would be to self-depreciate or patronise you by showing you my 'love handles’ or ‘rolls’.'

'I think the body positivity movement is about being inclusive of ALL bodies but the majority of these kind of images/physique updates I see on social media are generally slim girls like myself,' she finished.

Her post sparked a massive debate in the comments section, with fitness fans contributing their thoughts about before and after shots and body positivity.

'No person today is immune to the feelings of inadequacy, comparison, and body shaming that is so pervasive in our culture,' said one.

'You can be too skinny, too fat, too tall, too short, too square, too broad, etc. the list goes on.'

'Body positivity is about loving where you naturally are – about being comfortable enough to show what you actually look like.'

Hear, hear!

The hacker collective Anonymous has claimed NASA is close to confirming alien life – and conspiracy theorists are going crazy.

In a video shared on YouTube last week, Anonymous cites passages of recent talks at NASA which seem to support the idea of extra terrestrial life.

The person posing as Anonymous in the 12-minute video said: "Mankind has already made contact with aliens, and not just little micro-organisms floating inside a massive alien ocean, but [instead] advanced alien civilisation.

"Professor Thomas Zurbuchen [of NASA] said our civilisation is on the verge of discovering evidence of alien life in the cosmos, taking into account all of the different activities and missions that are specifically searching for aliens.

"We are on the verge of discovering unprecedented evidence."

However, Professor Thomas tweeted last night to say these claims are false.

Taking to the social media site, he said: "Contrary to reports, there's no pending announcement from NASA regarding extraterrestrial life.

"Are we alone in the universe? While we do not know yet, we have missions moving forward that may help answer that fundamental question."

Many are claiming that the Anonymous video is just a bunch of old videos looped together.

Yahoo claims: "It’s likely just a looped clip of a previous video being reused for the umpteenth time."

A nuclear power plant in the Czech Republic has been accused of sexism after it emerged it staged a bikini competition as a means of recruiting new interns.

The plant published 10 images to Facebook showing high school graduates posing in swimsuits in the Temelin nuclear power plant's cooling tower.

The post, which has over 1,500 likes, asked followers to vote for the candidate they like the best.

The young woman with the most votes will be given the title of “Bouncer of Energy” and the opportunity to embark on a two week internship with the company.

According to The Independent, the nuclear power company claimed the competition was a continuation of previous cultural enrichment programs.

As expected, social media users were outraged by the post, with many taking to the comments to criticise the company for the way in which those chose their interns.

One wrote: “This is most disgusting and sexist thing I've recently seen. I suppose your science accomplishments are adequate to your recruiting methods.”

While another said: “Have you lost your minds???? Anyone and everyone involved in this TERRIBLE decision should be fired without references.”

A spokesperson for the company told The Independent that the company offered around 900 internships each year.

"Most of them are organised for the high schools and universities that are members of our partnership program," they said. "Some of the internships/excursions are however customarily offered for the winners of competitions either organised by CEZ or by the third parties."

"In this case the participants of the Czech beauty contest Maturantka Roku, translated as the Graduate of the Year were photographed in the environment of the Temelin power plant."

"The fans on the Facebook page of the Information Centre Temelin could cast a vote on the Facebook page and choose a girl that would receive a short internship according to her preferences – if she plans to study journalism, she would do the internship in the press office, if she plans to study economy, she might do it in the economy department."

"The voting was possible only for a brief period of time – around one day – and then we stopped it. We haven’t announced any winner and we apologised."

It was later announced on the company's Facebook page that all 10 finalists had been offered internships.

Playing a part in someone else's wedding is a huge honour and for the most part, bridesmaids will do their utmost in order to ensure the bride has the best experience possible.

There's no denying that there's a certain amount of responsibility that comes along with the role. Planning the hen do, going to fittings, putting on a brave face when you're forced to wear a dress that cuts you off in all the wrong places – it's pretty much a package deal.

However, some brides have been known to take their demands a little too far, leaving their wedding party feeling less like friends and more like professional wedding planners with money to burn.

One unfortunate bridesmaid, who called herself Hayley, recently shared her experience on Mamamia.com.

Hayley started off by saying that she was initially “overjoyed” when her friend Caroline asked her to be a part of her wedding, however, her "joy quickly turned to utter despair" when the bride began to obsess over every tiny insignificant detail – right down to the buttonholes for the groomsmen.

The bridezilla then asked her bridesmaid to complete a excel spreadsheet of cake-maker suggestion, including the pricing, the contact information, flavours and “prestige” level, which she wanted completed later that day.

"Hey Hayley, How's it going?" the first email goes. "I need some cake-maker suggestions by COB [close of business] today please, Jase and I really want to get a wriggle on with this and need the contact details, price brackets, flavours and an idea of how prestigious the vendor is – in a table would be great. Excel is probably best please. Thanks!"

The cheek.

On that particular day, Hayley had been quite busy with work so was unable to complete the list until the following morning. She sent her suggesting to Caroline, apologising for her delay, but the bride wasn't going to let that slide.

“On Saturday morning, I cancelled my breakfast plans, instead researching Tasmanian wedding-cake makers (she'd decided to have a picturesque destination wedding) that might be suitable. I sent it through to her and had a reply almost immediately. "Thanks for this, would've been really helpful to have it yesterday when specified, but I appreciate it.""

Meanwhile, the bride had insisted that Hayley and her six other bridesmaids go shopping on three consecutive weekends in order to find the perfect wedding gown and bridesmaid dresses.

Caroline's chosen bridesmaid dresses came in at $550 each (around €370) – pocket change when compared to the price of the bridal gown.

She selected a gorgeous designer dress priced at $10,500 (around €7,124), and despite that fact it was twice her budget, the bridesmaids encouraged the bride to “totally splurge” on her big day.

She took their advice and bought the dress, only to later ask that they “pitch in” for her “dream dress.”

How could someone even begin to justify this bizarre request? Well, the bride thought the dress would be a sentimental treasure all the bridesmaids would have a part in if they paid for it.

No, really.

"That night, my inbox pinged again with another of the group emails from Caroline that I'd started to dread," Hayley recalls. "The subject line was "Bridesmaid dress contribution" and it made me break out into a cold sweat. The latest bridal update was a long email outlining how she and Jase were hugely over their bridal budget now that she'd splurged on the dress. That it was 'totally fine if you can't' but she would really love if we could 'pitch in' around AU$150 (£89) each towards her 'dream dress'. That it'd mean so very much to her and would mean that as she walked down the aisle, she'd be wearing something we'd all had a part in."

Hayley went on to explain how she was shocked and outraged by the request, but three of the seven bridesmaids had already agreed to contribute.

Not Hayley though, she's sticking to her guns, saying she may "have to bail on this wedding – and friendship", and to be honest, we wouldn't blame her.

Cork's Sexual Violence Centre received a total of 1,436 calls last year, according to its annual report.

Figures published today also showed that the organisation received just over 1,000 texts through its messaging service.

Almost half of the adult victims of rape and sexual assault in Cork in 2016 were aged between 18 and 23 and 91 per cent of the people who contacted the centre were female.

What's more, the report also found that just over one third of the people who used the services last year were students.

According to the figures, one in four assaults took place in the victim's home, 23 per cent happened outdoors and 22 per cent in the offenders home.

Shockingly, less than half of their clients reported their rape/ sexual assault to the authorities.

The centre provides a number of free services to the victims of sexual violence including, short-term counselling, court accompaniment and preparation of victim impact reports.

A total of 1633 counselling sessions were offered in 2016.

Speaking about the figures, Sexual Violence Centre Cork director, Mary Crill said: “One in five women in Ireland experience sexual violence. We have a conviction rate of 5%. Only one in four victims report to the gardaí. Sexual violence is about power and control. It is about misogyny.”

“Recent times have seen conversations and campaigns about consent. Consent is not grey. There is consensual sex and there is sexual assault. There is nothing in-between.”

She also spoke of the need for more education around the subject of consent in third level education.

“My hope for the conversations around consent and the consent workshops in third level institutions is that victims of sexual violence, their families, their friends and peers will acknowledge sexual violence – victims will be believed, victim blaming and rape culture will enter into decline.”

She welcomed the establishment of the Garda Protective Services Unit in Cork, and progression of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Bill through the Dáil and the Seanad, however, she also said funding remains an on-going problem.

The centre can be contacted on 1800 496 496. For more information please visit www.sexualviolence.ie

If there's one thing Graham Norton is renowned for, it's his ability to get the best out of his guests.

And if his recent interview with Jamie Foxx is anything to go by, it still works an absolute charm.

While appearing alongside Dame Judy Dench, Kristen Wiig and Steve Carell, Jamie Fox was encouraged to share his memory of his first encounter with Kanye West.

In front of a rapt audience, Jamie went the whole nine yards… despite the fact the actor has had to share it countless times before.

And from admitting he initially hadn't a notion who Kanye was to perfectly imitating the rapper's voice, Jamie's story of his dud review of Slow Jamz was perfect 'Big Red Chair' fodder.

We'll let Jamie take it from here…

So, the weather outside might be unpredictable, but that doesn't mean our homes don't deserve a summer facelift.

From splashes of colour, to fresh scents, there are loads of simple ways you can update your home for the season ahead.

Here's just a few ideas to inspire your inner designer.

Botanical Prints

Tropical prints were all over the catwalk for SS17 and now it's time your home interiors got in on the fun.

From ceramic pineapples to palm tree cushions, this trend will inject a breath of fresh air into any living space.

So, even if it's bucketing down outside, simply shut the curtains and relax in your own tropical paradise.

Climbing Plants

According to Pinterest, climbing plants are a huge trend in home interiors this year.

Traditionally this look would have only featured on the exterior walls of a house, but these winding plants have found a way indoors and actually look super chic in a living room or kitchen.

It can be hard to train plants to grown in the right direction, but all your efforts will be worth it when all your friends are drooling over this statement feature.

Moroccan

Another trend that isn't going anywhere fast is the bright and beautiful patterns of Morocco.

Whether it's a statement cushion or a simple lantern, the vivid colours and strong textures will add a sense of exotic adventure to any room.

Denim Blue

Designers are shying away from the monochrome colour schemes and are instead opting for a much softer approach.

While they may not be the brightest choice, navy and deep-blue tones provide a fresh yet cosy atmosphere.

New View

Let's face it, most of us have never even considered the option of pointing our furniture at anything other than the television, but with longer days and shorter nights, it might be nice to enjoy a new view for the summer months.

Consider rearranging some of the chairs in your living room – not only will it shift the focus of the room, but it will also appear bigger and brighter as a result.

Shout out to Better Homes & Gardens for this genius idea.

Summer Scents

Fill your home with the scents of the outdoors for that ultimate summer feel.

Pack away the spiced cinnamon candle you've been lighting since last Christmas and replace it with something more seasonal.

Marine, fruity and cotton scents are all good choices for the summer months.
