2016 was the year that every beauty junkie became obsessed with mystical creature-themed makeup, and independent online makeup brands like Unicorn Lashes and Storybook Cosmetics led the way when it came to creating whimsical, fairytale products.

Unicorn Lashes, which brought us the amazing unicorn horn brushes, just teased their followers with a set of insanely cool mermaid tail brushes.

The brushes have intricate, brightly coloured handles shaped like mermaid tails, and are giving us aches of Ariel-esque nostalgia.

The Little Mermaid themed brushes have since been removed from the brand's social media without a trace, much to the dismay of their followers.

However, many are speculating that the original image was not the finalised design of the sea goddess set, leading it to be pulled from the online platforms.

The brand then posted a series of beautiful images of fish, titled "inspiration," so here's to hoping the mermaid tail brushes are still in the works.

The prototype picture showed off four different brushes, two seemingly for foundation, one with a sponge applicator and one for buffing and bronzing.

The brushes are set to come in a shell shaped case, and will be limited edition.

"Aesthetics will definitely be more important than function," said Unicorn Lashes creator Mel Blue.

We can't wait to make these mermaid tail brushes part of our world.

You don’t need to protest to us – we know the temptation to stick a cotton bud in your ear, only too well!

It’s so important that you resist, however, because you could be doing way more harm than good.

The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery has released new guidelines on how to manage earwax, and cotton buds (or Q-tips) are apparently NOT the way to go.

Divorce oops whoops sarah jessica parker my bad

Apparently, our bodies are intricately wired to naturally break down earwax, via chewing and the growth of new cells along the ear canal.

While sticking a cotton bud in your ear can scratch the canal and potentially damage your eardrum, it can also shove that wax further back into your ear and interrupt the natural breakdown process.

The organisation’s chair, Seth Schwartz, explained: “Patients often think that they are preventing earwax from building up by cleaning out their ears with cotton swabs, paper clips, ear candles, or any number of unimaginable things that people put in their ears.”

“The problem is that this effort to eliminate earwax is only creating further issues, because the earwax is just getting pushed down and impacted further into the ear canal,” he added.

So, if you experience a particularly nasty build-up, what should you do? Resist the temptation to reach for the cotton buds, and go and see your doctor.

We're going to be honest here, when it comes to the world of haircare, there are certain things we prioritise (our roots) and certain things we don't (our hairbrushes).

But it looks like all that's about to change if the latest news from the beauty industry is anything to go by.

According to emerging reports, for a cool $200 you can get your hands on a smart hairbrush which will teach you how to care for and maintain your hair more efficiently.

That's right, ladies – you're about to get schooled.

By connecting to an app on your smartphone, the Kérastase Hair Coach brush will assess the damage and breakage experienced by your hair while also keeping track of its progress.

With the aid of an accelerometer, gyroscope and inbuilt microphone, your brush will be able to give you feedback on the manner in which you tend to your tresses.

And by collecting the information the Hair Coach brush will then be able to provide you with the methods needed to improve your haircare routine.

Developed by Withings in collaboration with L'Oreal's research and Innovation Technology Incubator, this brush will – depending on how you look after your barnet –  be your best friend or biggest enemy.

It’s congratulations for Jonathan Rhys Meyers today as he and his fiancée Mara Lane who have welcomed their first child.

The pair are said to have welcomed the newborn back in December according to E! news.

According to reports, Mara gave birth to a baby boy in their home and have named the little guy, Wolf.

While celebrity baby names usually leave us wincing, we have to admit we think Wolf is pretty badass.

Rumours that the couple were expecting a child began circulating back in September but the pair never confirmed the news until December when Mara took to Instagram to show off her bump.

“#IncomingPackage best present,” read her caption.

A BBC sketch called Real Housewives of ISIS is causing quite a lot of controversy online.

The two minute sketch was created by BBC2 show Revolting, and pokes fun at jihadist brides.

The sketch is facing plenty of online criticism from fans who feel the sketch has gone too far with its depiction of Islamic women.

"'Real Housewives of ISIS' will make Hijabis feel more isolated n targeted by Islamophobes. Thanks @BBC for adding to the negative stereotype,"(sic) said one.

However, others feel that the show does not make a mockery of Islam but of ISIS's "morally corrupt" values.

The recently revealed clip has garnered more than 33,000 Facebook comments, arguing as to whether or not the show is problematic.

The clip shows four British women, Afsana, Mel, Zaynab and Hadiya, who have travelled to Syria to join ISIS and become jihadi brides.

The sketch is delivered in the style of popular reality TV show The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

The sketch portrays the fact that Western women can be lured into joining ISIS by online forums and social media.

“It’s only three days to the beheading and I’ve got no idea what to wear," jokes one of the actors.

Another woman wears a suicide vest and asks: “What do you think? Ahmed surprised me with it yesterday.”

When another ISIS bride turns up wearing the same explosive device she says: “What a complete b****. She knew I had that jacket.”

Some viewers are praising the sketch for drawing attention to the fact that women can be recruited by SIS online, and see no issue in the jokes made.

"I like it. It’s making fun of ISIS which is a good thing. The whole point of satire is to bring people down to a level. If you can mock something, you’re not scared of it. ISIS want to be feared. Don’t give them that. And yes I’m Muslim, and a leftist. This does not offend me and even if it did, I just wouldn’t watch it," said one commentator.

If you fancy clearing out your room – NOW is the perfect time to do it.

Just as the Christmas lights are coming down, grab some fairy lights from your mammy or granny, because drowning your bedroom in those little sparkling things is totally in.

Just like a Pinterest pinboard, you can tack fairy lights to your headboard, ceiling, bedframe or doorframe:

It's safe to say the Little Mix girls have had to deal with their fair share of, err… romance issues.

From Perrie Edwards' very public split with Zayn Malik to Jesy Nelson's recent break-up with Jake Roche, it hasn't been an easy journey for them.

So, no wonder they made an album basically out of break-up songs. And now, Jesy has opened up on the UK radio show Z100, about just how hard a split is to go through.

"When you break up with someone, it's awful. Is it not one of the worst pains? It's horrendous and we all need a sad song that you sit and cry to.

"At the end of the day, though, you need something that makes you feel empowered … that makes you think, 'You know what I don't need you anymore. I'm going to go out with my girls and I'm going to get over you because I don't need you.' And that's exactly what Shout Out To My Ex does.

"I think you have to learn to have a thick skin. I think it comes with being in a girl band and being an artist. People want to know what you're doing and what you're up to, which is fine with us. We have each other luckily, so we experience everything together and we've always got each other's backs.

"I think being named role models kind of happened just naturally, we never really asked for it. Which is lovely, I love the fact that girls look up to us and we empower people and inspire them.

"But obviously, we're young girls and we're going to do silly things sometimes that can kind of put pressure on us, but we're just being ourselves."

In a very moving tribute to George Michael on The Late Late Show with James Corden, the British presenter shared his memories of the much-loved singer who tragically passed away on Christmas Day last year.

Recalling his meeting with the singer back in 2011, a clearly emotional James told his American audience that the Outside singer contacted him personally regarding the presenter's desire to do a sketch with him for Comic Relief.

"We chatted for an hour and we talked about music and I felt very privileged to be able to tell him how much his music meant to me," James said.

In the clip, which has racked up 80,000 views since yesterday, James reminded the public that if it wasn't for George Michael, it's unlikely the world would have been introduced to the wonder that is Carpool Karaoke.

Responding to James' tribute, one YouTube user wrote: "There needs to be a love button so I can hit it repeatedly!"

"Thank you for your tribute James. So true about George Michaels' music reaching out…so true!" added another.

We'll let James and George take it from here.

While Gogglebox Ireland may be responsible for making stars of a number of Irish families this year, two of its cast members are responsible for creating a trend which viewers have latched onto with gusto in recent weeks.

So, as we all know, best friends, Angela and Eileen from Castleknock, are generally joined by a tiny guest each week, and it looks like the Irish public are only dying to host him themselves.

Michael Tea Higgins is as big a star as the Tully twins from Cavan and the ladies from The Liberties, and a Dublin craft shop is currently inundated with orders from people who want a miniature version of the Irish President to keep their tea warm.

Taking to Facebook to highlight the popularity of the tea cosy in the run-up to Christmas, Not Just Hats wrote: "Our President wasn't around for long today! He was sold out in record time! But don't worry we have a back up stock!"

Responding to public demand today, they added: "Thanks a million for all your requests! We are getting through them today and we will be in touch with you all in regards to your questions and orders."

We didn't know how much we wanted one until now.

As we wave goodbye to 2016, we also bid farewell to some of the best – and worst – beauty trends the year had to offer.

From Dutch braids to overdrawn lips, 2016 threw quite a few new beauty challenges our way and we were more than willing to try our hand at all of them.

Never ones to shy away from a new trend, we’ve been looking at the beauty forecast for the next 12 months and it looks like this might be our best year yet.

White hot

When it comes to hair colour this year, it doesn’t get much cooler than white blonde hair.

From Jennifer Lawrence to Taylor Swift, many have tried and few have failed – sorry Tay.

To ensure you still have a single hair left on your head by the end of the year, we recommend taking your time and building to your perfect colour.

Mirror makeup

While matte eyes were having a serious moment last year, 2017 is all about the wet-look lids.

From glitter to shimmer, our peepers will be getting reflective this year with brands like Bobbi Brown releasing its very own eye gloss.

We admit, we’re not sure about this but damn if we’ll be scared away from trying a trend.

Fringe factor

We’ve spent the last two years growing out a dodgey side fringe only to be heading back to the hairdressers for the snip.

We’re totally cool with it though thanks to megababes like Zendaya and Rihanna who’ve already been rocking the look.

Experts say to team your ‘bangs’ with a shorter do to make the most of the choppy style, but we say you do you because that’s when you’ll look your best!

Chrome chic

This beauty trend started appearing on our feeds at the end of last year and it’s not going anywhere fast.

Take your nude shellac to the next level by getting chromatic but make sure to post it on Insta because hello, #InstaFamous!

Everything 80s

We’re talking popping blusher, side ponies and neon lips, the 80s are making a comeback whether we like it or not.

This beauty revival will have you finally putting those daringly bright eyeshadows to good use with trendsetters like Kylie Jenner making way for major throwbacks to icons like Madonna and Cyndi Lauper.

Glossy girl

While this may not be entirely new, glossing is this year’s version of our favourite trend EVER; strobing.

Dewy, glowing skin will be our go-to base look again this year with one small change.

Swap out your powder highlight for a cream or liquid alternative which will have you bang on trend.

You'll be glossing girl.

Part ways

While we’re a big fan of the lazy-girl hair toss, one of this year’s top hair trends will have us taming our disobedient parting.

Yes, the deep side parting is making a comeback and seeing as we’ve been there done that already, we’ll be walking into this one all guns blazing.

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has said authorities have identified the person responsible for the terror attack on New Year’s Eve.

Images taken from a selfie video shot by the gunman have been previously been circulated by officials, however Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus has said they now have his fingerprints.

Terrorist group ISIS who claimed responsibility for the attack, branded the gunman “a heroic soldier”.

The name of the gunman has not yet been released, however, according to the Independent UK, it is believed the man was living with his family in Izmir, Turkey for three weeks prior to the attack.

The attack, which was carried out at the Reina nightclub in Instanbul, saw the death of 39 people – many of whom were tourists – while a further 70 people sustained injuries.

The Turkish Parliament have extended the country’s state of emergency to “at least” three months, RTÉ have reported.
