Yearly Archives: 2016

For those of you who have a major sweet tooth, take a look at this macaron/doughnut mash-up.

Isn't it beautiful?!

French pastry chef Francois Payard invented these beauties, and we think they are the work of a genius. Francois also invented Macaron Day (which is March 20) so that's why he came up with this creation to celebrate this year.

The dessert combines all the goodness of the macaron with it's equally delicious, but doughy cousin, the doughnut. Mmmm.

Unfortunately, the macaronuts are only available on Macaron Day in New York – which has made us (and our stomachs) very sad.

But we're hoping praying the recipe will travel around the globe in no time and macaronuts will be welcomed to Ireland very soon.

In the meantime, we're just happy to look at how gorgeous they are.

John Carney's newest offering Sing Street is already generating a huge Irish buzz ahead of its release this week, but it's been making waves on the other side of the pond too.

The film, set in 1980s Dublin and telling the story of an awkward teen (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) who starts his own band to impress a girl (Lucy Boynton), has been doing the international film festival circuit over the last few months – and it happened to catch the eye of one very famous rapper.

After seeing Sing Street over in the US, hip-hop legend Jay-Z was apparently so impressed that he personally made contact with Carney.

"John [Carney] got an email from Jay-Z to say he loved the movie," 16-year-old Walsh-Peelo told the Irish Independent this week.

And it seems Bey's husband wasn't the only musician who was impressed with the film, which features tunes from bands like Duran Duran, The Cure and Spandau Ballet.

"[At the premiere] Sting was sitting next to me… apparently he loved the movie," Walsh-Peelo added.

Sing Street doesn't get its official cinema release here until March 17, but it was the opening film for last month's Jameson Dublin Film Festival, and it received a massive standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah back in January.

"It’s kind of a memoir of my days in school, and a school band back in the Eighties in Dublin," says Carney.

Kylie debuted fab new hair the other day, and it was the first colour change in a while. But while she debuted it all dressed up in Florida, we wondered whether it would actually look good with casual wear – and it sooo does.

The reality star was out over the weekend on a shopping trip with friends, and she sported a super relaxed look.

Taking to the 90s trends, Kylie teamed her navy/purple-ish locks with a patterned bandana, baggy white jumper and leggings, along with Puma runners – and it gave us all the #StyleInspo goals.

We're especially loving the bandana because we're betting Kylie has unwashed, greasy hair under it (let's be honest, we've all had those days).

The 18-year-old recently signed a contract with Puma and shot a killer campaign, so no doubt we'll see her rocking the sports brand for months to come.

But as for her hair, she admitted the colouring is taking a toll so we'd stick to this one for a while.

If the words "Toxic Tuesday" simultaneously thrill you and make you feel a bit nauseous, then you'll want to read on.

DCU's beloved Old Bar will be no more as of this summer, but before it's gone forever, the college's Students' Union are planning one last hurrah on May 21.

These days the Old Bar is mainly used for club and society events, but in its heyday it was the sweaty, sticky-floored home of dirt-cheap pints, pool tables and DJs who mainly played The Fratellis' Chelsea Dagger on loop.

"For one night only, The Old Bar will be open to DCU alumni to say goodbye to their youth and drink cheap pints from plastic glasses with some old favourites on the stage/decks," the organisers say via Facebook, where the event has already attracted interest from over 1,000 people.

"Take the weekend off, grab a bag o’cans and treat it like it’s 2006… just don’t try hop the fence into Hampstead or go looking for an afterparty in Shanowen, you might actually get arrested this time."

According to Deirdre O'Sullivan from DCU's Office of Student Life, the Old Bar is a bit of a "shell" these days, which is why the SU are hoping to "bring back some of its former glory" on May 21.

A DCU grad herself, Deirdre got in touch with fellow alumni Louise Bruton and Alan Flanagan to help organise the one-night event, before the bar is demolished to make way for a new €14m four-floor Student Centre.

"We're still getting everything confirmed for May 21, but we're hoping to get some of the old bands and DJs that have played there before on board," says Deirdre.

If you're already counting down the days and have any ideas or suggestions of what you'd like to see on the night (More Dutch Gold? The entire back catalogue of Kaiser Chiefs?), you can email deirdre.osullivan@dcu.ie.

See you there!

With a massive 41,000 followers on Facebook alone, it's no surprise that blogger Rosie Connolly was one of the first names that cropped up on the shortlist for VIP's Most Stylish Social Influencer Award this year.

SHEmazing! headed along to the launch of the Peter Mark/VIP 2016 Style Awards awards today at Dublin's Marker Hotel, and nabbed Rosie for a quick chat about her wardrobe, her favourite current trends, and of course her blog, Hearts Heels And Handbags.

Her stunning style – and who influences it
"Mostly it's people that pass me by in town and street style snaps from around the world who give me outfit inspiration," says Rosie.

"I don't really follow celebrities or catwalks – I like to take influence from things that are around me."

Her trend predictions for SS16
"I'm swearing by crochet tops and dresses as well as white knits.

"I love anything easy and versatile."

Her go-to jeans
"I'm going to be wearing lots of ripped denim this season. Ripped jeans are perfect for Ireland because you're still wearing trousers that will keep you warm, but the rips lighten it up a bit.

"It's easy to dress denim up or down too, so ripped jeans can bring you from work to the bar on Friday night."

Her beauty routine
Keeping her make-up in line with her fashion choices, Rosie lightened things up for spring at today's launch with some yellow eyeshadow from Inglot.

"Yellow eyeshadow is a great transitional colour and really brings your make-up into the new season," she explains.

And the most important thing – her outfit for The VIP Style Awards
The Dubliner is on the Most Stylish Social Influencer shortlist alongside some seriously fashionable names – Ciara O'Doherty, Suzanna Jackson, Anouska Proetta-Brandon, Chloe Boucher, Leanne Woodful and more – but she says she hasn't been getting too stressed about what to wear. For now, anyway.

"I haven't a clue yet!" she says sheepishly.

"I'm going to pick up some inspiration over the next few weeks and hopefully be able to pick up something really nice for the night.

"I have to get down to the hard work now – picking a dress!"

Whatever she chooses, she'll no doubt look fab on the night – and hopefully she'll be stepping up on stage to claim her award.

It's safe to say that we're all super excited about the Gilmore Girls revival – but get ready to be uber excited by this news.

A Gilmore Girls WEDDING looks to be on the cards, and we just can't wait.

On a recent Warner Bros Studios tour, one fan spotted something very interesting, very interesting indeed.

On a lamp there was a slip of paper that read "Gilmore Girls… Wedding". Yep, wedding!

Now, we all just can't wait to see who will be the lucky bride, because come on, it either has to be Lorelai or Rory.

Happy tears, sad tears, onion-chopping tears… getting a bit watery-eyed is a perfectly natural part of life, but it turns out that it's pretty darn artistic too.

Dutch artist Maurice Mikkers, who also happens to be a medical laboratory analyst, shed a few tears one day after stubbing his toe, and decided to check out the results under a microscope.

He was so chuffed with what he saw that he set out to create a full series of microscope-based photos of tears, from his own tears and those of willing volunteers.

He's dubbed the series The Imaginarium Of Tears, and it's very impressive.

Maurice says he didn't notice much difference between the microscopic look of say, the tears he cried while chopping onions and the tears a friend with an ill father had cried – but notes that each tear was still uniquely different because of the "oils, enzymes and antibodies" that formed it.

However another similar experiment last year did show up some interesting results. When examined in closer detail, it seems that our tears do vary somewhat depending on the reasons behind them.

Photographer Rose-Lynn Fisher studied the composition of 100 different tears for her exhibition The Topography of Tears and discovered that basal tears (the ones that our body produces to lubricate our eyes) are drastically different from the tears that happen when we are chopping onions.

Similarly, tears of laughter have a very different make-up than tears of sorrow. Again, this could be down to the molecular make-up of each tear, or could be due to other external factors.

"There are so many variables—there’s the chemistry, the viscosity, the setting, the evaporation rate and the settings of the microscope," Jospeh Stromberg of the Smithsonian’s Collage of Arts and Sciences told Lifebuzz of Fisher's work.

Fascinating – and pretty beautiful too.

A lesson in how to be a Celine Dion superfan, by Selena Gomez…

Celine Dion took to the stage at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas on Saturday night – for the final time until mid-May – and one other famous singer was there to cheer her on.

Selena headed along to the show at Caesar's Colosseum, and couldn't help but get caught up in the pre-show buzz, documenting the whole thing in full via Snapchat.

First things first, she bought the obligatory overpriced merch:

Then she took a few group shots of herself and her pals:

There was the classic blurry stage photo with aaaalll the emojis:

And one of Selena getting weepy in the audience as she watched her idol:

So far, so normal.

Except, unlike other Celine fans, Selena actually got to hang out with the world-famous singer after her show. For which she ditched the t-shirt, sadly:

Amazing. It's been an emotional few months for Celine, whose husband of 22 years René Angélil lost his battle with cancer back in January.

The musical legend took a hiatus from her Las Vegas residency before returning for a bittersweet first show back at the end of February, which included a gorgeous video tribute to her late husband.

"I might not hear his voice yet, but I talk to him, I think of him all the time," she told the crowd.

"I feel and I know he hears me, one way or another."

No matter how many dignitaries, ambassadors, Prime Ministers and regular celebs you've met in your life, it seems all it takes is one glance from Ryan Reynolds to knock you for six.

As the daughter of US President Barack Obama, 14-year-old Sasha Obama hasn't exactly had an ordinary upbringing. But just like most teens her age (and adults, let's face it), she's a big fan of Mr. Reynolds.

And after coming face-to-face with the *disarmingly* hot actor during the Canada State Dinner at the White House last week, poor Sasha got a bit flustered.

Vancouver native Ryan attended the event with his wife Blake Lively, but found a few minutes to chat with the President's youngest daughter before sitting down to dinner.

This candid snap, which shows poor Sasha looking like she's about to melt with excitement as she chats with Ryan, has been doing the rounds on the internet all weekend.

There's just so much to love about it – Sasha's uber-starstruck face, Ryan's 'let's have a serious conversation, shall we?' expression and, of course, 17-year-old Malia Obama being the cheekiest big sister ever in the background.

She might be a bit blurred out, but there's no mistaking that massive smirk and thumbs up that Malia is throwing in her little sister's direction:

We bet the unmerciful slagging is STILL going on, four days later.

Yaaaas Kylie!

Kylie Jenner is the latest celebrity to be picked up by Puma, and her first official campaign shots landed last night.

Although the main focus of the €1m deal is to promote the "zero excuses" Puma Fierce runners, it's Kylie's leggings (oh, and those abs) that had us looking twice this morning.

Above is the first snap, posted by an "excited" Kylie in her role as Puma brand ambassador.

And here's the second, shared on the official Puma Instagram moments later:

Puma, who also signed Rihanna to create an athleisure wear range last year, first teased news of Kylie's campaign last month, much to the distress of her brother-in-law Kanye West.

After Kylie took to the catwalk for Yeezy Season II last year, Kanye obviously had her pegged as a loyal Adidas soldier, even confidently telling reporters that she'd "never" work with Puma despite the ongoing rumours. Oops.

Kanye later went on to explain that his sister-in-law had signed the lucrative deal in secret, adding that there was no bad blood… at least not anymore.

"She had already signed and I was mad for a little bit… but I'm really happy for her though."

Somehow we doubt that…

In the Internet-world that we live in today, writing notes can be really sweet. That's if you leave them for your partner of three years and at the end it says "P.S. please do the dishes."

But when a random stranger leaves a (lengthy) note "all around town," then it's safe to say a few people will get a bit freaked out.

Twitter user AhnethAhra, decided to show the world what was found several times around the local area:

The note read:

"OK Ladies, I get it.

You don't want a pleasant evening chat.

You don't want a gentleman to walk you to your car.

You don't want a friendly dude to help you carry your groceries… or hold open the door… or crush the life out of other men that would do you harm.

Fine – fear the good guys… I guess we'll have to just suffer through watching you get broken over and over by the scum you think you love.

But I want you to know – it's not easy and it hurts to see you fall.

Give the good guys a chance to help you be less afraid of the world."

He wanted to get his point across, fair enough. But another random stranger had a brilliantly epic comeback:

Random stranger no.2, we don't know who you are, but we love you.

One thing that most fans love to buy at concerts are t-shirts. So much so, they've even become a major trend in the fashion world.

But, one fan may have been left disappointed when she received a t-shirt from Justin's Purpose World Tour – and it had a very embarrassing typo:

Yep. The name of his OWN tour, Purpose, is spelt wrong. Instead, purose is typed on the back of the shirt. Ouch.

We doubt Justin actually knew about this, because we bet he'd have a major freaker.
