vip style awards

Unless you accidentally flung your phone into the sea yesterday, I'm sure you noticed that one of Ireland's biggest fashion nights of the year was taking place – both at Dublin's The Marker Hotel and across social media.

The VIP Style Awards encouraged those nominated for awards and their supporters to gather for a night of revelry and fashion scrutiny – and one blogger trend in particular was palpable after one glance around the room.

Ruffles, ruffles, everywhere – and all of them in black.

Of course, there were the outliers, like Doireann Garrihy who opted for a quirky but stylish llama-print pantsuit, Holly Carpenter, whose jewel-toned dress was reminiscent of Taylor Swift's 2016 Grammys look (although I must say Holly wore it better) and James Kavanagh who turned up in a contemporary Balenciaga laundry bag.

However, the most noticeable look was that of the flamenco dancer emoji in a mourning procession – and I honestly mean that in a good way.

From Just Jordan to Louise Cooney to Rosie Connolly, the red carpet was awash with the gentle sashay of black ruffles.

Louise Cooney opted for a black fulll-skirted dress with tiered ruffles on the skirt, topped with a lacy corset and Louise's signature blonde curly blow dry.

Lisa Jordan of Just Jordan – winner of the Best Dressed Award at the SHEmazing Awards, might I add – went for a spacially occupying  ball gown with a high-neck top and lengthy, voluminous train.

Rosie Connolly, who has recently taken some time from social media, went for a dramatically cut dress by blogger fave Umit Kutluk. The dress featured waterfall ruffles and an asymmetric shoulder, and was my personal favourite of the night.

Whether the all-black ensembles were a nod to the Me Too movement of the Oscars or simply a cosmic coincidence is yet to be seen, but now we have a hankering to incorporate a statement ruffle into our glam wardrobe.

Here are the pieces in our online carts for ticking this trend box with ease:

Strappy Ruffle Wrap Mini Dress €30.42, Shirred Ruffle Bandeau Top €17.28, V Neck Ruffle Dress €48.39

With a massive 41,000 followers on Facebook alone, it's no surprise that blogger Rosie Connolly was one of the first names that cropped up on the shortlist for VIP's Most Stylish Social Influencer Award this year.

SHEmazing! headed along to the launch of the Peter Mark/VIP 2016 Style Awards awards today at Dublin's Marker Hotel, and nabbed Rosie for a quick chat about her wardrobe, her favourite current trends, and of course her blog, Hearts Heels And Handbags.

Her stunning style – and who influences it
"Mostly it's people that pass me by in town and street style snaps from around the world who give me outfit inspiration," says Rosie.

"I don't really follow celebrities or catwalks – I like to take influence from things that are around me."

Her trend predictions for SS16
"I'm swearing by crochet tops and dresses as well as white knits.

"I love anything easy and versatile."

Her go-to jeans
"I'm going to be wearing lots of ripped denim this season. Ripped jeans are perfect for Ireland because you're still wearing trousers that will keep you warm, but the rips lighten it up a bit.

"It's easy to dress denim up or down too, so ripped jeans can bring you from work to the bar on Friday night."

Her beauty routine
Keeping her make-up in line with her fashion choices, Rosie lightened things up for spring at today's launch with some yellow eyeshadow from Inglot.

"Yellow eyeshadow is a great transitional colour and really brings your make-up into the new season," she explains.

And the most important thing – her outfit for The VIP Style Awards
The Dubliner is on the Most Stylish Social Influencer shortlist alongside some seriously fashionable names – Ciara O'Doherty, Suzanna Jackson, Anouska Proetta-Brandon, Chloe Boucher, Leanne Woodful and more – but she says she hasn't been getting too stressed about what to wear. For now, anyway.

"I haven't a clue yet!" she says sheepishly.

"I'm going to pick up some inspiration over the next few weeks and hopefully be able to pick up something really nice for the night.

"I have to get down to the hard work now – picking a dress!"

Whatever she chooses, she'll no doubt look fab on the night – and hopefully she'll be stepping up on stage to claim her award.

Pippa O'Connor-Ormond has been celebrating this week after she was named Most Stylish Woman 2015 at the Peter Mark VIP Style Awards on Friday night.

Dressed in a stunning blush pink Alice and Olivia gown with a plunging neckline, Pippa looked every bit the style queen. However not everyone was happy with her look, and Pippa has revealed that she received a number negative comments about her weight after posting some pictures from the evening on her social media accounts.

"Ninety-nine per cent of the comments were great and so on but a few comments were,’Oh my God, way too thin’ or ‘eat a burger’”, the mum-of-one revealed to The Irish Sun.

The naturally slim model was taken aback by the needless comments, and says she feels skinny shaming someone is just as hurtful as fat shaming them. "I just thought to myself, ‘That’s the height of ignorance. You wouldn’t say to someone, ‘You’re a few stone overweight, so lay off the burgers’ To me, it’s as insulting."

Pippa added she has no time for people making assumptions about her weight or health. "Personally, because I’m flat chested, it makes me look even slimmer… You’ve no idea what someone does or doesn’t do. That could just be the way someone is and that’s the way I am," she said.

The hurtful comments came just days after actress Amy Huberman deleted a photo from her Instagram account after receiving backlash from commenters about her weight, something which Pippa says struck a chord with her. "I just thought when I saw the picture of Amy, we all need to just think before we speak. I just think it’s rude. It’s bad to other women," she explained.

During her VIP Style Awards acceptance speech, Pippa spoke about the recent death of her mum Louise, who would have celebrated her birthday the day after the ceremony.

Louise passed away unexpectedly last year, leaving behind a devastated Pippa, her brother Cian and sister Susannah.

"I could just imagine my Mum today- on what would have been her birthday," Pippa wrote on her website on Saturday. "She would have been thrilled for me. So it’s a bittersweet day today."

It’s without doubt the glitziest night in the world of Irish showbiz, and our favourite celebrities didn’t disappoint as they hit the red carpet for the VIP Style Awards.

Walking away with the big prize on the night, Most Stylish Woman, was model-turned-blogger Pippa O’Connor.

If her outfit on the night was anything to go by, she certainly was a worthy winner. The star dazzled in a stunning champagne-coloured halter-neck dress, attending the event with presenter pal Brian Dowling.

I don't have my Brian @brianormondtv but I have the next best person @bprdowling .. Having great fun tonight #vipstyleawards

Taking to Instagram to celebrate her win, Pippa shared a photo of herself with her shiny new award, with the caption: “Sooo thrilled, excited, shocked. Can’t believe I won!!! Thanks to everyone that voted!!!!”

Actor Rory Cowan took the award for Most Stylish Man, stylist Lisa Fitzpatrick won Look of the Year, while Rose of Tralee Maria Walsh won Most Stylish Newcomer.

All eyes were on the fabulous Jennifer Maguire, who was stepping out for the first time since welcoming her daughter, and her stunning look secured her win as the Most Stylish Woman on the Night.

The ceremony, which took place at the Marker Hotel in Dublin, certainly was a star-studded event, with the top names from the world of Irish showbiz and TV wowing on the red carpet.

Congratulations to all of the winners!

Irish designer, David O’Malley, has already made an impact here in Ireland thanks to his new stylish collection, but he is also known for promoting young Irish designers, both here and abroad.

David’s interest in fashion began at an early age but he really only began to develop his famous textile skills when he started studying at NCAD (National College of Art and Design).jeanbyrne

David’s stylish textile collection has become popular with big names, including RTE weather reporter, Jean Byrne. Jean wore one of his designs at the VIP style awards and has been a great supporter of his designs since the beginning.

“My pieces are now stocked in Design Centre and when she saw the collection we were both happy for me to make a one off piece for the VIP Style Awards consisting of leathers and metallic lime green. I was very happy to see the piece on her and I have gotten a huge response and extremely good feedback,” said David.

He will be spending his summer in Milan and Berlin to promote Irish design, saying: “it’s early days,” but is very excited about what impact these events will have on young Irish design.

O’Malley says the recent economy has it made more difficult for young designers to enter the industry but believes that Irish designers are starting to make a bigger impact.

“I have a feeling that Ireland will still take the world by storm – with the strength of Design Centre and fellow young designers working on design for Game of Thrones and Irish design waving a flag for international events I think Ireland is just about to make waves.”

Design Centre Powerscourt is currently holding an event to promote young Irish designers. Tickets are still on sale and if you would like to get involved you can get in contact with the Design Centre number: 01 – 6795863
