Monthly Archives: November 2015

by

With just seven short weeks to go until Christmas, you're no doubt already thinking about your presents list and eyeing up a few new party dresses.

But all that costs money, meaning a Christmas job is high on the list of priorities for many of us. If you're not keen to work in a crowded bar or department store this festive season, we may have just the thing.

As reported by SHEmazing! last month, Dublin's Christmas landscape will be brighter and busier than ever this year thanks to the I Believe Festival, which runs from November 26 to December 23.

As well as a huge Rockefeller-style Christmas tree, pride of place at the festival will be the I Believe Market at CHQ Dublin, offering shopping, dining and entertainment every day throughout the season.

As part of an extensive recruitment drive, there are over 100 full-time and part-time positions on offer, with an open recruitment day taking place TODAY, November 5 at the CHQ Building.

Walk-in interviews are accepted, and the recruitment day will run until 4pm.

Applicants should bring with them a current CV, working visa (if applicable) and any Manual Handling / HACCP certs.

For any more information, check out the Excel Recruitment website or contact them on Twitter.

There is surely no one who hasn't experience the horror of a cracked phone screen: you drop your beloved device on the ground, hear the gut-renching sound of shattered glass, subsequently picking the item up to confirm your very worst fears.

You have two options: grin and bear and attempt to operate it through smashed glass – or cough up the €100-odd required to fix it.

Neither, needless to say, are ideal.

However, now Japanese scientists say they've come up with an innovative, light-weight aluminium that could signal the end of broken phone screens.

The material is so strong it rivals some metals – including iron, copper and stainless steel – and it can also be used to create super slim smartphone covers.

Dr Atsunobu Masuno, from the Institute Of Industrial Science at the University Of Tokyo who led the research, told the Asahi Shinbun newspaper: "We will establish a way to mass-produce the new material shortly.

"We are looking to commercialise the technique within five years."

Previous attempts to use alumina in glass have been unsuccessful as it tends to crystallise when it touches the sides of a container.

We can never get enough of cute baby animals, so luckily for us Dublin Zoo have just welcomed a new and oh-so lovely arrival.

The zoo is now home to a new baby Rothschild giraffe, who was born on October 28.

Just look at him there, all gangly-legged and tiny:

Though adult giraffes can grow to a staggering 6m, this little fella currently measures up at just 1.5m… around the same height as us, really.

At one week old, the little one weights  45kg, but by adulthood that could increase to as much as 2000kg. He better start eating his veggies.

The new baby joins a herd of nine giraffes at the zoo, including another youngster who was born back in May.

"The calf was born in the giraffe house with the other female members of the herd present," team leader Helen Clarke-Bennett explained.

"The team watched the birth unfold on our closed circuit cameras.

The birth took over an hour and we noticed that the herd was very attentive each step of the way."

Giraffes are the tallest of all living mammals, with their long necks giving them the choiciest picks of leaves from the top of tall trees.

Like human fingerprints, each giraffe's coat has its own unique markings.

We call this meeting of the Babysitters Club to order!

It's been twenty years since Kristy, Stacy, Mary-Anne, Dawn and Claudia graced our screens, but last night the cast got together for an epic reunion.

The actresses attended a special screening to mark the 20th anniversary of the film, which was based on the hugely successful book series by Ann M Martin.

Director Melanie Mayron and cast members, including Rachael Leigh Cook, Larisa Oleynik, Schuyler Fisk and Marla Sokoloff gathered for a Q&A, some movie-watching… and a few adorable selfies.

"I've known these ladies for 20 years and I feel so lucky to share this special evening with them," wrote actress Marla Sokoloff, who played the girls' sworn enemy Cokie Mason.

Actress Rachel Leigh Cook, who went on to find fame with She's All That, was also there to celebrate the landmark evening.

Rachel played bookworm Mary-Anne in the Nineties film, and seemed delighted to reunite with her former cast members. "It's ON!" she wrote next to a selfie of the ladies before they headed on stage at The Alamo Theatre in Austin, Texas.

And of course the actresses had to pose for a Babysitters Club-style snap, too:

Is it bad we want to go and re-read all the books now?

'N SYNC, NSYNC, even N-Sync… Justin Timblerlake's former boyband has been given many different titles.

But officially the band was always known as *NSYNC, leaving us with one of pop music's greatest mysteries.

Why, exactly, is there an asterix in the name?

Well it turns out it wasn't a typo, or a Nineties attempt to be cool. Instead, it was a piece of advice from world-famous psychic and illusionist Uri Gellar.

Speaking to the Huffington Post recently, band member Joey Fatone recalled Uri telling the fivesome that he saw "something to do with suns or stars or something with astronomy" in their career.

And Uri himself backed up Joey's story, revealing he advised the boys to place an image of a star on their first album, released back in 1997.

"Of course I bent spoons for them and they were very impressed," he said of his first meeting with the *NSYNC boys.

"We sat down and I wrote, on a napkin, NSYNC, and I drew a star in the café. And I told them, if they place that star on their first CD, they’re going to shoot up to Number One.

"I think drawing and writing down their name and creating that star gave them that subliminal push to go for it."

And while that first album only ever made to #2 in the charts, it did reach platinum a whopping ten times over in the USA alone… so we reckon Uri was onto something.

Streaks, patches, unmatched foundation… When it comes to fake tan disasters us Irish ladies have experienced every single one, and we can spot them a mile off too.

So we could definitely empathise with Ariana Grande yesterday when the singer stepped out with a less-than-even golden glow.

Ariana was in London to launch her debut fragrance ARI for Boots, and while she still managed to look amazing, her tan left a lot to be desired.

Fans were quick to notice that Ariana's foundation was a fair few shades lighter than the rest of her body, and there were noticeably patchy areas on her chest and neck.

Second-day tan, for sure.

Whatever about her bronzed look, Ariana's hair was definitely on point – since earlier this week she's been rocking on ombre style with a mix of blonde and brown.

And the singer seemed to have a perfect day at the launch, despite not being able to interact much with her fans due to security constraints.

"What I was yelling was I'm sorry I can't hug / come out to u'. the security guys here wouldn't let me outside& I'm really upset. I'm sorry," she wrote on Twitter.

"I love u the most. but seeing you earlier today made me so happy," she added.

Last last week they made their first red carpet appearance together in two years, and it seems like this pair are starting as they mean to go on.

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel stepped out together once again last night, this time for the Country Music Awards in Nashville, Tennessee.

No doubt excited to have a night off from parenting their seven-month-old son Silas, the couple could barely hide their giddiness.

"Date Night!"

"Date Night!" Jessica captioned a photo of the pair making silly faces from their seats in the Bridgestone Arena.

Jessica looked elegant in a white lace Marchesa number, wearing her hair in a chignon and accessorising with Tiffany diamonds.

Justin meanwhile, kept things casual – and very country – with a blazer, dress shirt, dark jeans and suede boots.

As well as getting to enjoy the awards with his wife, the singer performed on stage with CMA nominee Chris Stapleton, joining him for a rendition of Tennessee Whiskey and Drink Away.

"We had these nominations and thought we were gonna get, maybe, a slot to perform," Chris said, explaining how Justin ended up on stage with him.

"So I called him [Justin] up and, and asked him if he'd be interested in doing it and he was like, 'Yeah man, I'm in. Just tell me when to show up.' So here we are, we're gonna do it!"

Finishing up rehearsals… Honored to share the stage with this BADASS. Wednesday night. Memphis x Nashville. @castapleton #CMAawards

Having not appeared together at an event since November 2013, Justin and Jessica gave fans a pleasant surprise last week when they both attended the Night Of Stars Gala in New York.

But even off the red carpet, the pair are clearly smitten. "Happy Bday to the sweetest, most GORGEOUS, goofiest, most BAD-ASS chick I know," Justin wrote on Instagram for Jessica's 33rd back in March,

"You make me smile 'til it hurts. I love you like crazy! –Your Huz."

Adorable.

The Nutty Professor is going to be a dad again.

Actor Eddie Murphy is expecting a child with his girlfriend Paige Butcher, his rep confirmed last night.

This will be Eddie and Paige's first child together, but fatherhood is by no means a new experience for the actor.

He already has eight other children between the ages of eight and 26, with four different women.

Eddie is dad to Eric, 26, with Paulette McNeely; Christian, 25, with Tamara Hood; and Bria, 25, Myles, 22, Shayne, 21, Zola, 15, and Bella, 13, with his ex-wife Nicole Mitchell.

Nicole and Eddie were married for 22 years before splitting in 2006. A year later, former Spice Girl Mel B gave birth to eight-year-old Angel Iris.

The actor denied that he was Angel's father at first, but after a long paternity battle and a DNA test it was finally revealed he was.

Speaking in an interview back in 2010, Mel described her pregnancy with Angel as a "horrible time" due to the stress of her very public fight for paternity.

"I had paparazzi following me everywhere… I had people calling me a gold digger, saying that I got pregnant on purpose," she explained.

After a few years of no contact, Eddie started becoming a part of Angel's life shortly after her third birthday. Nowadays a source says that all of Eddie's kids are very close.

"Even though he has eight children by four different women, they all come together on holidays and for sporting events and hang out at his mansion as one big blended family," a source tells Mail Online.

"All of the children love each other dearly and the women, having all moved on with their own relationships, co-exist very well together."

Hopefully Baby Number 9 will be welcomed with open arms.

Officially for the rest of us, the collection goes on sale at 9am tomorrow in the College Green shop and on H&M's website. Undoubtedly, demand will continue until the items sell-out.

Elsewhere around the world, the queue to get into H&M's flagship outlet at Orchard Building in Singapore began on Monday, while on Fifth Avenue in New York, lines of shoppers are also well-established by now.

In Sydney, those first in the queue at the Pitt St Mall were being paid hundreds of dollars by eager fashionistas.

As one 19-year-old student there explained to the Daily Telegraph: “I’ve gotten $200 from someone who asked me to buy a dress for them.

“The dress costs $200 and she handed me another $200. People are really desperate for the clothes in the collection but not willing to line up overnight.”

We all get a bit moody at times, it's only human! But if your day feels like a rollercoaster of emotions, it's best not to worry about it.

As it turns out, those who swing on the pendulum of emotional intensity may be showing signs of a natural ability to adapt to change. Which is totally a good thing.

The University College London has created a theory that moodiness helps to reinforce our responses to various environmental factors.

If an experience makes us happy, we are going to seek more of it. And in contrast, if an experience is unpleasant, it will likely bring us down.

Being able to flip a switch when it comes to your reactions is beneficial in terms of survival, in both your social and work life.

"The ubiquity of moods and the extent of their impact on our lives tells us that, throughout the course of evolution, our moodiness must have conferred a significant competitive advantage," said lead expert Dr Eran Eldar.

Now, the study did admit that being moody all the time can lead to depression, but Dr Eldar added that “being moody at times may be a small price to pay for the ability to adapt quickly when facing momentous environmental changes.”

So you can now feel free to fume for five minutes if you can't find your favourite mug in the office – and then switch back to your lovely usual self.

We all get the urge to trim a piece of our hair off every now and then. Whether it's that annoying bit that will NEVER straighten or that piece of fringe that is totally overgrown, there's always something to snip.

So if you're brave enough to trim your own hair, follow these safe steps so you don't end up with a do' like Britney circa 2007:

1. Before you do ANYTHING, step back and take a few breaths. Don't trim your hair on impulse, because you'll more than likely make a mistake. Instead take a few minutes, evaluate the situation and if you're still up for it, proceed.

2. Don't even think about reaching for a regular scissors; or worse, a craft scissors. It's important to use a proper hair-cutting scissors because they have a more pointed tip and it will make it WAY easier for you.

3. Dry your hair first. Wet hair will normally fall longer than dry hair, so it's easy to cut it too short. Once you blow-dry your hair, you'll be able to see its fullness, growth patterns and cowslick. Brush your hair so it is as even as it can be.

4. Go SLOW. The most important thing to do is measure before you trim your hair. Look at your hair before you put it through your fingers and decide just how much you want to take off. Take the length off slowly, if you go too fast you'll probably end up taking way too much off.

5. If you have a fringe, cut it at an angle. Instead of cutting a straight line across, lightly chip away overgrown pieces so you get a soft edge.

The cast of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (which included a VERY streamlined Jennifer Lawrence), are jetting around the world to promote the new movie but you'll need to brace yourself for the latest clip.

The small trailer includes one of the most anticipated moment in the entire series – for Team Peeta, at least.

If you have read the book, you'll understand that the first strangely romantic "real or not real" line will be just as powerful in the movie as it was on the pages.

In the clip, Peeta, played by Josh Hutcherson, is looking very emotional as he relives the torturous times of being in President Snow's reigns.

But then when Katniss advises her star-crossed lover to rest up, he asks, "You're still trying to protect me. Real or not real?"

“Real,” she replies. “That’s what you and I do. We keep each other alive.”
